EXTENSIVE FRAMEWORK COMMISSIONS Opus has a strong track record in the delivery of frameworks and has worked on contracts with many healthcare clients across England and Wales. These have included; Countess of Chester Hospital, Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust, Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board and Hywel Dda Local Health Board. Through the repeated successful delivery of contracts we have established long-standing relationships with these clients and in some cases stretching over 25 years. Works undertaken have included; structural alterations, refurbishments, extensions as well as flagship new build schemes.

DESIGNED FOR LIFE: BUILDINGS FOR WALES Opus provides consultancy services on Welsh NHS capital works projects under the “Designed for Life: Building for Wales” framework in response to the Welsh Government’s healthcare strategy with the goal of providing a world class health service by 2015.

WELSHPOOL HOSPITAL, NEW RENAL UNIT Opus provided the engineering design for the new renal unit at Welshpool Hospital and used BIM to aid the design process. This significant project for Powys Teaching Health

Board presented many logistical and constructional challenges, in particular the co-ordination of different types of cladding systems and complex geometry. This new build two-storey extension providing a fourteen bed renal dialysis unit is suspended over car parking and contains the latest state of the art medical equipment. Another interesting feature is the building’s sedum roof, which helped the project exceed the BREEAM ‘Very Good’ targets set by the client.

PORT TALBOT HEALTHCARE CENTRE A state-of-the-art Health Centre, designed by Opus, providing a onestop shop for patients. With a nautical theme to reflect the maritime history of Port Talbot, the £10 million Health Centre has an eye-catching sail shaped roof. In addition to the civil and structural engineering design, Opus carried out flood risk assessments as part of the scheme development. The area is susceptible to flooding and improvements were made to the condition of the ground, using pre-boring techniques for the building’s foundations.

LLANDOUGH HOSPITAL MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES

Opus also designed an improvement to the main highway network’s junction with the hospital entrance as well as new infrastructure within the hospital, including access roads and car parks. Work was phased to allow the existing departments to be temporarily relocated during the construction period.

WREXHAM MAELOR HOSPITAL Since the construction of Wrexham Maelor, Opus has undertaken civil and structural engineering projects at the hospital for 30 years. Most recently, Opus provided the design for a new adult mental health facility comprising two new state-of-the-art new buildings as well as a multi-storey car park. A key requirement was the phased delivery of the scheme, with early completion of the car park works required to enable site clearance to take place. “We have had a long relationship with Opus. They have always provided a professional service and delivered solutions to time and budget.” Andrew Williams, Head of Estates Department North Wales NHS Trust

Structural and civil engineering design services were provided by Opus created this new building with three inter-linked wings.

CHILDREN’S HOSPITAL FOR WALES Through the “Designed for Life” framework Opus is undertaking extensive work on the £60m final phase of the Children’s Hospital for Wales. Opus is providing geotechnical, civil and structural design and will supervise these aspects during construction of the six storey building, which will provide an independent hospital for children. Of significant importance on this scheme is Opus’ input into the decant works to enable the relocation of the existing paediatric facilities to other areas of the hospital whilst the new building is being constructed. The basement service corridors running below the site will remain, as they provide vital services supplying other areas of the hospital. Construction is expected to be complete in three years time.

NOTTINGHAM UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS NHS TRUST Opus has provided CDM Co-ordinator services to this trust including work for the Trent Cardiac Centre and the Clinical Haematology Unit as well as Disability Discrimination Act improvements and demolition of redundant buildings. Opus ensured that risks, including keeping cleanliness levels high and dust production minimal, were identified early on to prevent disturbed spores affecting patients.

PRINCE PHILLIP HOSPITAL BREASTCARE UNIT

NEONATAL UNIT – CAERPHILLY, NEWPORT

Extension and refurbishment of the existing Breastcare unit by Opus created a centre of excellence and improved services. The existing service was fully maintained and decant facilities were being provided. The extensions included ward accommodation, a new lift and access stairs together with ancillary accommodation.

BASSETLAW HOSPITAL - DONCASTER ROYAL INFIRMARY For Doncaster and Bassetlaw NHS Trust, Opus is designing a new multiuse building at Bassetlaw Hospital. The new accommodation will bring several departments that are currently spread across the site together, to improve efficiency. Opus is providing structural and civil engineering design for the scheme. Challenges include the sloping nature of the site with the main services running through the space.

The existing neonatal unit at the Royal Gwent Hospital in Newport South Wales is currently being considered for refurbishment by Aneurin Bevan University Health Board, in order to provide for an improved environment. Opus is providing site investigation and structural engineering services for the proposed alterations. It all comes with the usual logistical problems of working within a busy, acute hospital environment, on a constrained site and with a restricted budget. The client’s brief is that the existing unit has to be relocated temporarily, on another ward within the Hospital, whilst the main refurbishment works ensue. Another key driver is that the adjacent Hospital departments have to remain functional during the whole of the construction process, with a great emphasis on infection control and privacy.

A review of the initial concept design was also undertaken by Opus, who provided several updates to reduce the cost, including a change in floor design, foundation options and retaining wall design.
