IGERIANS are at their hypocritical best in the tributes that they pay the dead. It has not been different for Dr. Alexander Ifeanyichukwu Ekwueme, who transited on Sunday 19 November 2017. Friends, families, and foes alike have suddenly discovered the good things about Dr. Ekwueme that should have made him a great Nigerian President. One commentator said he “was the best President that Nigeria

State governors regretted to announce “the glorious exit of a great leader and extraordinary statesman, His Excellency Dr. Ifeanichukwu Ekwueme, GCON.” As tears flow and obsequies climax for the burial of the late former Vice President of the Federal Republic, tributes have also poured in for this great leader and extraordinary statesmen from Oko, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State, who spent most of his adult and professional life building bridges of understanding across cultures, tribes, creeds and religions in pas-
sionate attempts to bring about a Nigeria that everyone would be proud to belong to. In his tribute, the Deputy Senate President, Senator Ike Ekweremadu described the late former Vice President of Nigeria, Dr. Alex Ekwueme as a good man, “who lives even in
death.” “Ide was a good man, a mentor and great inspiration to all of us. He still lives even in death. We love you, Ide,” Ekweremadu said in his condolence statement. According to Ekweremmadu, NiContd on page 2

Stay off social media – FG warns staff
S
TAFF members of the Nigeria Television Authority (NTA), have been warned of the consequences of patronising and participating in the discussion of sensitive national issues on social media. The Oracle Today learnt that a circular dated 15 January 2018, and sent to all NTA stations, schools and offices across the country, informed staff of the management’s decision on the matter. It warned of severe penalties for non-compliance. Dr. Steve Egbo, Executive Director, Administration & Training, on behalf of the Director General of NTA, warned that offenders would be punished in line with Civil Service rules, if they crossed the line. “The line the circular talks about is not clear,” one NTA staff member in Abuja said about the circular that was not specific about what would constitute an offence. “What comments would people make that would constitute an offence? Is the circular saying that we can no longer comment on national issues?” It is not clear how the management knew about the comments NTA workers were making on social media. It is also not stated how management intended to get information on those breaching the rules without invading the privacy of the individuals involved. In the same way, there are no specific mentions of conduct on the social media that would constitute an offence. Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, who supervises NTA, had on several occasions told Nigerians that security agencies were monitoring criticisms of the Buhari administration on social media. Last August, Senator Shehu Sani condemned a statement by the Nigerian Defense Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. John Enenche that the military was Contd on page 2
