T

HE headline is not meant to reflect the tendentious posturing that there are no candidates for the 2019 general elections. If anything, it is to ask them to come out (as we say), show themselves, be visible, and let us know that they want to run Nigeria. IT is another way of asking them what they intend to do

THE ORACLE TODAY COMMENT

with Nigeria, away from the platitudinous lines about making it a better country. Things are so bad that we can be sold on that “better country” lingo, but we have seen a lot. We have also heard a lot. THERE is little time left for us

to interrogate, investigate and situate those who want to take charge if Nigeria in 2019. Who are the candidates? What is their idea of Nigeria? Have they tested these ideas elsewhere? CHAIRMAN of the Independent National Electoral Commission,

INEC, Professor Mahmood Yakubu disclosed at an induction retreat for Resident Electoral Commissioners in Uyo on 8 December 2017. The announcement did not increase the tempo of political activities in the open. POLITICIANS are still in their default mode they are talking to themselves. They are conspiring. They are deciding all by them-

selves who would be what, and who should not be what. Their reasons are ‘personal; to them, or at best ‘political’. THEIR interests would have little, if anything, to do with the larger interest of Nigerians, interests that seem ordinary, yet they are all the people have to cling to, Contd on page 24

PVC: More hurdles for voters in South East From BONIFACE OKORO, Umuahia, CHUKS EZE, Enugu

U

NLESS drastic steps are taken to ameliorate the situation, efforts by governments, groups and individuals in the South East to mobilise the people to participate en masse in the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration, CVR, exercise in the country may be in vain as the

people so mobilised are finding it difficult to register owing to poor operational logistics put in place by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the exercise. Recent figures released by INEC indicated that of the six geo-political zones, South East has the least number of registered voters at 8m, compared to North West’s 18m, South West’s 14m, North Central’s 11m,

South South’s 10m and North East’s 9m as of January this year. Miffed by these widely circulated figures, which practically reduced the South East to an inferior voting bloc in the country, political, traditional, cultural and religious leaders as well as individuals, convinced that the zone can muster more voters than already recorded, took steps to
