Will 2019 elections hold?

IX months to the 2019 general elections, there are more question marks over the elections. Will they hold? What happens if they do not hold? The charged political atmosphere is providing some rooms for some parties to threaten that others are working against holding the elections. It is one of the charges against the National Assembly, which is currently on recess. Those who want the National Assembly to reconvene immediately claim that its long recess threatens the elections, as the budget for the Independent National Electoral Commission is awaiting the approval of the National Assembly. But there are more to these issues that are heating up the polity as the elections draw near. “The National Assembly will not stop the elections. The National Assembly is doing its best to have the elections hold,” a source told The Oracle Today. “The allegations against the National Assembly are part of the politics of the day.” Defections dominate the politics, which seems to be centred at the National Assembly. After the losses to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and some other parties, the All Progressives Congress (APC), wants to take control of the National Assembly. “The interest in the National Assembly reconvening is unwholesome. There are plans to cause confusion when the sessions resume. We are aware of their plans,” said a source who did not want to be quoted. Without President Buhari Control of national politics has been diffused in the absence of President Muhammadu Buhari who commenced a 10-day medical leave, in London, on August 3. In his absence, Acting President Yemi Osinbajo fired Alhaji Lawal Daura, considered the President’s untouchable confidant. There has been no confirmation of when the President would resume.
