Offa robbery: In politics, all things are possible
T
HE police have made the bold point that when they want to work, they can work. An appendage to that point, however, is that the amplitude of attention that the police pay to crime depends on what the police want to achieve. That is rather dangerous. All the rigmarole about the Offa robbery and the alleged involvement of Senate President Bukola Saraki
The Oracle Today Comment in it, do not make sense, in the manner that the police are going about it. This is not a defence for Saraki, he is writing well, and has the resources to defend himself. ACCORDING to the police, the investigation in the Offa robbery, in which 33 have
died, nine of them police officers, are still on going. Why did the police have to inflame the public with information about an investigation it had not concluded? IF the investigations were concluded, would the next move not be to charge the suspects to court? Why the

Lagos community battles Total over underground water contamination From SOPURUCHI ONWUKA, Lagos
T
he residents of Akoka community in Yaba area of Lagos State are in mortal battle with officials and representatives of multinational oil marketing firm, Total Nigeria Plc, over underground water pollution which the residents claim is affecting their health. The dispute between the residents and the oil marketing company which has rapidly snowballed into a legal battle revolves around who takes responsibility for providing safe and potable water for the people following alleged contamination of underground water by the company’s service station in the vicinity. The Oracle Today gathered that the residents grew mad at the company when they suspected that petrol seepage from an underground tank in a nearby Total service station left water wells and boreholes contaminated with hydrocarbon liquids. It was not certain which of the different petroleum products--diesel, petrol or kerosene sold at the fuel retail station-caused the contamination but the residents accused the station manager of keeping rusty underground tanks from where, they allege, the contaminants seeped into subsurface water sources. A water well in one of the houses allegedly burst into flame while some of the residents tried drawing water, indicating that the contaminant might be chiefly premium motor spirit also called petrol. The matter is already a subject of investigation at the Department of Petroleum Resources (DPR), which is the technical regulator of activities in the petroleum
