The brainchild behind this is photographer Jo Curtis who took all the saucy snaps. The participants bravely showed their assets in locations around Southend and in poses that cheekily reflect their particular business. All the profits are going to Southend Hospital Charitable Foundation’s Bosom Pals Appeal. Risque Business calendar’s can be purchased for £7 at several locations around Southend or contact jo@jocurtisphotographer.co.uk to purchase your calenders. Please support this very worthwhile cause. A modern, alternative way to ease the cost of Christmas.

C

hristmas is coming and money’s looking tight.! Thanks to the banks, this recession touches all of us but we still want to celebrate and give gifts to loved ones. That little bit extra to tide you over Christmas time would come in handy, wouldn’t it?! Pay that credit-card off or splash out on a surprise gift for a spouse but keep the cost off the bank-statement. There’s a thousand reasons! Whatever your reasons for needing some extra help, these days there’s a professional, ‘small-bank’ alternative to High Street Banks also in the High Street. Pawnbrokers operate just like a bank (providing loans secured by a pledged item) and with the same business ethic covered by the NPA) National Pawnbrokers Association). Pawnbroking has come a very long way from its ‘Dickensian’ origins and subsequent

reputation. Simply put, it’s like borrowing money from yourself. After all, you own and continue to own, the goods you pledge as security. Unlike the common misconception, pawnbrokers are in the loan business, and therefore it’s not in their interest to gain title to your goods. The time and expense involved in disposing of the pledged items often removes any profit. Customers are given plenty of time and advance warning before any items are disposed of so there’s little danger of losing a much-loved piece. Aaron Lyons in Hamlet Court Road is one such modern jewellers. Pawnbroking is a natural extension of the services offered by this highly-qualified, local, family-run jewellery business. Aaron is not a pawnbroker. He is a qualified jeweller who offers a professional, loan service as an additional service offering to his customers. Having trained with C.J. Vinten in Leigh, Aaron went on to qualify at London Guildhall University.

Release the cash in your valuables Loan contracts at Aaron Lyons run over seven months instead of the usual six and the property pledged can be redeemed at any time during the contract period on payment of the original loan plus the monthly payment due. There are no early redemption penalties.

Aaron is happy to take offered items as loan security but will also ask whether the customer would prefer to sell them as this can often obtain a better price. Collateral can always be used again but if it’s unwanted then why not realise its value now? It’s entirely up to the customer. The process is simple, easy and friendly. There’s a separate room for loan transactions to protect your privacy and private consultations can be arranged at your own home for added reassurance, if preferred.

Modern, professional and ethical. So who uses a pawnbroker’s services? A greater variety than you may think. A young single mother of a seven year old came in last winter to Aaron Lyons Goldsmith, needing some cash, immediately, as her gas had been cut off and further funds were not due for a week. In a matter of minutes, Aaron had valued the pledged goods, drawn up the contract and handed the cash over to the anxious mother. Gas restored. Loan repaid. Goods redeemed a week later. Happiness and warmth all round!

Perhaps that promised cheque just hasn’t materialised – you know it’s coming but your business needs cash NOW! Aaron enjoys several small, local concerns as clients. One required a four-figure sum to overcome a blip in cash-flow. He tried many other avenues before he made the call to Aaron. A Rolex literally changed hands (albeit temporarily), the cash was released and a crisis averted. This particular customer has repeated this process several times now using the same collateral and has since become a jewellery customer to boot.

What is The Southend Fund? T

he Southend Fund was founded by Howard Briggs as his mayoral charity when he was Mayor of Southend in 2001-2002. In our town there are approximately 600 charitable, cultural and residents’ groups which are always in need of funds for the work that is needed within the community and very few of them have sufficient resources for the work that they wish to undertake. Howard wanted to establish an endowment fund to assist these groups in perpetuity regardless of the state of the national and local economies. Initially, during the year 2000/1 there were two priorities. The first was to find an organisation which could manage the Fund at minimal cost. The second was to raise sufficient money during the actual mayoral year to ensure that it would make a difference to the community from the very beginning.

that day to this, along with her team, has given 100% support to the Fund. She was able to inform Howard that an anonymous donor would add 50% to whatever was raised but the minimum needed to be £25,000. For this target to be reached would involve a lot of work, so Howard turned to one of his oldest friends, Peter Croysdill who had recently retired. They had both previously in the 1950’s been Boy Scouts and eventually Queens Scouts in the 2nd Thorpe Bay scout group at St. Augustine’s Church. After much discussion they agreed that the ideal committee size was two people with one missing from any meeting. Peter’s great talent lay in approaching people for assistance on an ad hoc basis and in the year to follow many people found themselves involved in supporting a project of which they had very little knowledge at all. To say Peter was pushy would have been an understatement but over the next year they were able to raise in excess of £130,000 which included the match funding.

He approached the Essex Community Foundation in Chelmsford (www.essexcommunityfoundation.org.uk) which had been founded about a year previously. The Chief Executive, Laura Warren, was very enthusiastic and from They had concerts at the Cliff’s Pavilion, fund NOVEMBER

raising dinners, sports events and held out a begging bowl in a number of directions. The mayoral charity in Southend has always carried a lot of prestige thanks to mayors of earlier generations and because of this the people of Southend were extremely generous. Over the next few years they established a traditional committee because the pressures of the two of them expanding the fund on their own would have been too great. They were fortunate that some later mayors supported them with their mayoral charities and we were able to enhance the Fund considerably and in this respect we have to thank Charles Latham, Daphne White and Gwen Horrigan who, along with their committees, put in a lot of hard work. However, it is important to remember that The Southend Fund has no formal links with Southend Council and acts totally independently. The committee continues to raise funds in any way it can and the Fund has lost some of its capital value during the past two years but prudent management by the Essex Community Foundation trustees has meant that we are still able to make donations on a par with previous years. Peter still chairs the Development Panel which raises funds and Howard chairs the Grants Panel which decides upon the awards.

Through his own experience as an MP Sir Teddy Taylor recognized the need and assists them in every way possible as patron. The Southend Fund is Southend’s own charity and for those who might be minded to consider a gift or a bequest to their town without actually giving it to the Council, we believe this is a channel which they could use in the certain knowledge that it will benefit this Borough for generations to come. If the reader goes to our website (www.thesouthendfund.org.uk ) he/she will find that the beneficiaries have come from across the social spectrum. The Fund has supported local charities, the arts, sports clubs, community and medical support organizations. It has donated almost £100,000 pounds in eight years and has also been able to support the work of the government’s Grassroots Grant Scheme which has meant the town’s charities and community groups benefitting by another £208,000. We have also received matching grants from government’s Grassroots Endowment Challenge which will mean that from April 2011 there will be far more in the Fund to enhance the social cohesion which already exists but needs improvement. Did Howard and Peter consider it worthwhile? Of course! It was and is probably their proudest achievement.

Modern, stylish and longlasting but never boring

Oracle Hair & Beauty

Belle of the Ball, not ugly sister. by Craig Smith

T

he festive season is just around the corner, which of course heralds the traditional 5pm stampede to the workplace loos as the ladies transform themselves Here Come the Girls-style from conservative co-workers into glamorous party minxes. Time is always short but if you follow my advice, you can give yourself a Cinderella-esque makeover in moments.

are, I beg you not to overdo the under-eye concealer. In the real world no one has completely shadow-free eyes. Anything with an overly pink base shows up very unflatteringly in photographs. To avoid the reverse panda effect, go for something yellow-based – or face being an unwitting ‘star’ of Facebook the morning after the night before.

The Five-Minute Party Makeover (FMPM) This begins with your morning beauty routine whether it's your hair or makeup. Prep them properly and you'll have the base you need to get to the party in style.

Next concentrate on creating either the kohl-eyed, or luscious-lipped look - the combination of dark, glossy lips with heavy, vampish eyes never, ever looks as gorgeous in real life as it does in a photo shoot, where the model is carefully lit. To avoid being mistaken for Morticia Adams, pick either, or.

The loose, modern ‘up-do’ is a hot hair look this party season. After you wash and dry your hair in the morning, wear it in a loose chignon or a ponytail for the day. After work, shake your hair free and give it a light mist of hairspray. Rub a little paste or wax onto your hands and finger-brush through evenly. Then, make a loose ponytail at the nape of your neck before randomly pinning loose curls up in the nape area until you get the look you want. Finally, add a decorative hairpin and a final spritz of hairspray and, va-va-voom, you’re done!

For the Smoky Eye, apply eyeliner on both top and bottom lashes (be sure to 'smudge it,' dark eyeliner will age you). Next add an eye shadow primer and a shimmery shadow on the lid. Don't apply any more mascara, unless your earlier application has rubbed completely off, otherwise you risk getting clumpy tarantula lashes (hello, Katie Price?!). Dab a glimmering blush to cheeks, powder your face lightly and finish off by applying a light lipstick or gloss.

For those of you with short hair, curl it in the morning then freshen the locks before the evening. If the boss has banned you from GHDing in the office, then you can add body by back combing and holding it in place with a bit of hairspray. It’s also nice to accessorize with a headband or flower. Making the transition from day to evening make-up is also pretty stress free. Apply tinted moisturizer (or foundation), mascara and lipstick (or gloss) first thing. After work, cover any blemishes by patting in a concealer (never rub) – and no matter how tired you

16

LEIGH-ON-SEA ORACLE

Looks to Avoid

For Deep Red Lips, start with a matte eyeshadow, in a colour that's as close to your skin tone as possible (such as beige). Apply a very light, sparkly blush on your cheeks. Line your lips and fill in with your favourite shade of red. Finish by powdering your face (including the lips - this will help the colour last). Don’t forget to pop the colour in your handbag, as the price you pay for having a perfect crimson kisser is the need to top it up throughout the night. The other payback of doing this is that you won’t be the traditional tipsy woman, with a wonky mouth and vermilion teeth.

NOVEMBER

2010

Just a few more things to bear in mind... Just because it’s the party season, don’t be fooled into thinking you can get away with wearing glitter on your face. If you have even the tiniest crow’s-feet, the glitter will migrate to them, highlighting the wrinkles you’ve worked so hard to hide and make you look like a drag queen.Trust me, I know several. Don’t wear too much perfume. An overpowering fragrance – no matter how pleasant or expensive – is cheap. Perk yourself up by cleaning your teeth before going out after a long day at the office (before doing the lipstick please!). Be careful about careless deodorant application as you rush to get changed; the same goes for moisturiser and any form of last-minute unwanted hair removal. Just leave it. Chances are no one will notice a bit of leg stubble; they will notice a whopping shaving cut. For all your hair and beauty issues write to beauty@oraclepublications.co.uk Sponsored by

h how to pick the right shampoo? Well, the guy's at hed in Leigh on Sea may just have the answer. They think they have had it for some time, but just haven't been able to tell us. Chemists in Canada have been working on what they hoped would be the world's leading Shampoo and Conditioner. The people at Moroccanoil have already taken the hairdressing industry by storm. Their flagship product Moroccanoil treatment quickly became the fastest selling product In North America. Indorsed by A list celebraties such as Lady Gaga, Mariah Carey, Salma Hayek, and Debra Messing Moroccanoil is now one of the fastest growing hair product ranges in the industry.

The hed team were blown away by the Moroccanoil range and the great results they were achieving, but the range lacked a Shampoo and Conditioner. The chemists have been developing a high performance cleansing system to fill the void. The New Moroccanoil Shampoo and Conditioner encapsulates their innovation where science meets nature. Over two years was spent on the development time to make sure they got it right.‌

Get Ready For Winter By Stuart Winder ADI

A

s the nights draw in and the mornings are freshening, thoughts turn to preparation for winter on the road, especially given the harshness of last year’s cold snap. First of all, I’d recommend getting a winter service carried out on your vehicle. Most chain or independent garages will offer them at a reasonable rate. At any reputable service centre you should be offered a general inspection of your engine bay, tyres and brakes, as well as benefiting from fresh anti-freeze in your radiator and the correct dilution of screen-wash for minus temperatures. In other countries at or near our own latitude, the use of spiked ice-tyres is compulsory in the winter months, along with permanent illumination of headlights and other restrictions. Yet we rely on buckets of dog-end-littered salt, injudiciously scattered around the town seemingly with little forethought.

matter of days each season in the UK each year. However, readers who find themselves in rural areas in the snow might do well to carry a set of snow chains in the car boot, and practice fitting them before the snow arrives. If you must make a journey in poor conditions preparation is essential should the worse happen and you find yourself waiting for roadside assistance when conditions deteriorate. A big metal box is just about the worst thing to be inside in minus temperatures, and if your heater should fail that’s exactly what your car will become. So, take outside clothing, some snack foods – don’t forget the hundreds of people stranded on the M11 overnight – and remember to take water, as you will dehydrate almost as quickly in extreme cold as extreme heat, but be less inclined to drink it. If this all seems a little excessive, do the sensible thing and stay inside, mount the sofa and watch something good on the telly with a nice big cup of tea and some cake.

recipe of the month Chilli Mussels Ingredients

In the Kitchen with Judy Barden

1kg mussels 4 tbsp olive oil 1 clove garlic, finely chopped ½ Spanish onion, finely chopped Grated zest of a small orange 6-8 thin slices of fresh ginger 1-2 fresh red chillies, finely sliced 75ml dry white wine ¼ - ½ tsp ground turmeric To garnish, fresh coriander, fresh basil and 2-4 red chillies

1. In a large flat heatproof casserole dish, saucepan or large sauté pan, heat the olive oil. Add the finely chopped onion and cook stirring constantly until the onion looks translucent. Add the garlic for a further minute. Add the orange zest, sliced ginger and chilli and cook for another 30 seconds.

2. Drain the mussels of any water and add to

Chilli Mussels

T

he wonderful aromas from coriander, turmeric and ginger and then the hit of chilli makes this a great mussel dish. I know lots of you will not have cooked mussels before but they are very easy and quick to do as long as you follow a few simple rules regarding cleaning them. Big chunks of crusty bread to mop up the juices is all you need. Enjoy ! Place the mussels in a large colander and rinse well under running water. Scrape each shell with a knife to remove any traces of mud, seaweed or barnacles. (Most of the mussels we buy are farmed and fairly clean but check them over). Discard any mussels with a cracked or broken shell and any that have shells that are open and do not close immediately when tapped. These are all unfit to eat. Rinse again under running water and pull out the little ‘beards’ that protrude from the shell. LEIGH-ON-SEA ORACLE

3.To Serve; Discard any mussels that haven’t opened. Add the fresh coriander and basil and whole chillies to the mussels. Pour into a heated serving bowl or warmed individual bowls and serve immediately with crust bread.

Managing Mould

accumulate in the air. It is not generally known but a family of four or five can produce approximately 17 litres of water vapour every day. That much water has to go somewhere! A lack of adequate ventilation is a contributory cause. Naturally during the summer months windows are left open, but during the winter and of course also for security reasons windows are locked shut. A Lack of ventilation allows background bacteria to settle and this, coupled with the increased moisture in the air, allows the ubiquitous black mould spores to germinate where bacteria has been allowed to settle. Mould can also be a health hazard as it produces spores which, once airborne, can create respiratory problems, cold like symptoms or other distressing allergic reactions.

By Malcom H Thornton

oes your home suffer from black mould and streaming windows? If it does then it could be suffering from condensation. Although condensation sounds like a trivial matter, it can cause a lot of damage to the home and its contents not to mention the effect it can have on your health. Approximately 70% of reported domestic damp is condensation damp and it is undoubtedly a contributing cause of some infestation by wood boring beetle and dry rot outbreaks.

Increased ventilation and a sustained background heating is paramount to avoid condensation damp and black mould developing. Introducing the Positive Pressure Unit. The science is simple. Air is attracted to the unit, either from a loft or ducted from outside. It is filtered against impurities and pollen and the continual input of fresh filtered air will replace the moisture laden and stale air. Fresh filtered air will not only allow your property to breathe but it will substantially eradicate the damaging effects of Condensation Damp and toxic black mould.

Condensation can occur at any height and on almost any cool surface. This distinguishes it from rising damp, which almost never occurs at heights of more than four feet over external ground levels and is confined to the walls in contact with the ground.
