The Art Ministry – Caring through creativity

T

t is claimed that participation in creative arts and crafts activities can help keep you young. Leigh on Sea resident Margaret Armstrong is proof of that. She has attended The Art Ministry’s weekly art and craft session for visually impaired adults for over a year and she reckons it has made her feel younger – at £3.50 a session it’s better value than any beauty treatment!

The support of the local community is key to The Art Ministry’s longevity. It is managed on a voluntary basis by its trustees, with the help of 30 local residents. It employs 5 part-time session leaders, most of whom started as volunteers.

If a 13-mile walk is too much for you then donate your unwanted arts and crafts materials and declutter at the same time. The Art Ministry receives some funding from local groups such as the Lions, Rotary Club and ROSCA Trust. It is also supported by Children in Need and the Co-operative Membership Community Fund. Oracle Hair & Beauty

Blonde Ambition K

anye’s wife dyes her hair and the world goes krazy. Here’s how you can get your glow

on…

Whether she is a massive Draco Malfoy fan is uncertain but #hottrendalert, Kim Kardashian could have started 2015’s latest must-have look. She’s certainly no stranger to creating a sensation by shaking up her image but dyeing her hair platinum blonde has to be one of her most daring transitions yet. Well, apart from shooting champagne over her head and into a glass balanced on her capacious bum.

Be Patient! If you too are considering making the leap from dark to light then it’s worth doing properly and being patient. In the first instance, it could take around five hours to make sure your new colour looks sensational, but also natural. The process I and my team at Grateful Heads would follow is to bleach the mid-length and ends of your hair first, as this takes longer to develop. Then we’d bleach the roots. Being newer hair, this takes less time to lighten. Once that’s done, a quick trim followed by some serious styling will really create a ‘wow’ factor. However, once it’s done and you want to stay blonde, you have to commit to the programme, so to speak. Turning blonde requires maintenance. Bleaching can weaken your hair, so your aftercare regime is really important. Look for products that are specially formulated for blonde hair treatments. If you want to achieve true

16

ORACLE-ON-SEA

platinum blonde status it’s essential to eliminate brassy or yellow tones that come naturally after the initial treatment. Dark brown or jet black hair, like Kim’s, that has been radically lightened is the most prone to brassiness, so invest in high quality products to keep your colour looking Beverley Hills rather than Beverley Hillbilly.

Correct tone - essential You will also need to go book in at the salon every 4-6 weeks, in order to blend in your roots and maintain a constant tone throughout. It almost goes without saying that, if you are looking to lighten up, speak to your regular stylist, as they will help you to find the right tone for your skin tone.

Don’t ignore Eyebrows Also, bear in mind that complimenting your blonde locks by adjusting your beauty regime also pays dividends. In particular, don’t ignore your eyebrows - we all know the crude joke about matching collar and cuffs but having gone blonde, so many women ignore or forget their eyebrow colour.

Council News

Local Economics W

e are now, I hope, coming to end of the silly season in the election timetable. We go through it every election where some political parties make unsupported claims. However some of these claims can upset residents so contrary to what you may have heard: Council borrowing has not increased; in fact I have reduced planned levels of borrowing by £38 million and in 2 years’ time I plan for this to be £47 million.

Over the last two years there have been no fines issued for dog fouling. Looking at the economics, it has cost us, the taxpayer, £300,000 to issue no fines. Put simply there are better ways to spend your taxes. Textile re-cycling will still be collected from your homes.

Dementia care centre

No front line services have been cut; instead the positive element is that £3million will be invested into front line services. I am proposing for a 60 bed dedicated specialist residential dementia care home, extra care housing and a day care centre for up to 45 people living with extreme disabilities and learning difficulties. This will be on a specially designed adult care campus where quality care will be given by Southend-on-Sea trained staff. I can also promise that under my continued leadership of the Council there will be no development on Shoebury Common and certainly no mud Sea-Wall. The new waste contract not only retains local jobs

22

ORACLE-ON-SEA

but will give substantial year on year savings (not cuts) for an expanded and improved service. Considerable time has been spent negotiating this contract, and the new contractor is Veolia, one of the UK’s leading environmental services providers who have a first class track record. The decision to award the contract was approved by all councillors at full Council on Thursday 26th March.

New services Veolia has committed to further improving our current recycling rates, maintaining weekly collections, delivering a first-class service to our residents and businesses, as well as maintaining an attractive street scene across the borough. Please be assured that services will remain uninterrupted and the new contract includes the following services: 4Weekly waste and recycling collection services 4Operating and running the recycling centres 4Street and beach cleaning 4Gully cleaning and emptying 4Winter maintenance including gritting 4Cleaning of public toilets 4Graffiti removal 4Weed spraying and removal 4Building and operating a new waste transfer station 4Provision for commercial waste services Cllr Ron Woodley Leader of Southend-on-Sea Borough Council

Advertorial

Alleyn Court impresses inspectors A lleyn Court School is highly successful in meeting its aims.”

“The pupils’ personal development is excellent and their achievement both in academic work and activities are also excellent.” “They make an excellent start in the Early Years Foundation Stage and develop a love of learning which stays with them throughout their time at the school.” “They attain high standards and make excellent progress as they move through the school.” These are the resounding endorsements and judgements of the Independent Schools’ Inspectorate in a newly published inspection report following their four day visit to Southend independent school, Alleyn Court, earlier this term.

Many of the school’s key strengths are identified in the positive report. The inspectors reported that at Alleyn Court: u u u u u u

u u

The quality of pupils’achievements and learning is excellent The contribution of curricular and extracurricular provision is excellent The contribution of teaching is excellent The pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development is excellent The quality of governance is excellent The quality of leadership and management, including links with parents, carers and guardians is excellent Communication with parents is excellent The overall quality and standards of the early years provision are outstanding

The school achieved the top rating (excellent) for every aspect inspected except the contribution of arrangements for welfare, health and safety, which received the second best grade (good).

Team effort Headmaster, Gareth Davies declared his delight at the outcome and content of the report: “It is an incredible report and truly affirms the quality of education that we offer at the school. It is a great

reward for the tireless efforts of the staff and children who strive to make the school such a success; it has been a real team effort.”

Offering Excellence The school, which boasts 315 pupils aged two to 11, was found to be compliant with regulatory requirements and considered to have a strong family ethos, which is not surprising considering that it has been owned by one family for its entire 111 year history. Family spokesman William Wilcox, Chairman of the school, added “we pride ourselves on offering excellence and this report certainly reinforces this. It is a fitting conclusion to the family’s ownership of the school before it becomes a charitable trust in September. We are thrilled with the efforts of the Head, leadership team and all of the staff for achieving this outcome.”

Improvements met

Approved by the Secretary of State, the Independent Schools Inspectorate reports on compliance with the Education (Independent Schools Standards) (England) Regulations 2014. A team of inspectors observed lessons, conducted formal interviews with pupils and examined examples of pupils’ work. They also held discussions with parents, members of staff and the chair of the board of directors.

The school also received two recommendations for further improvement. They were advised to establish robust procedures for record keeping in personnel files and in the EYFS, they were required to include a greater range of resources both indoors and outdoors to encourage more children to write for a purpose in their play. Mr Davies commented that“the school has already made progress towards addressing these improvements and will continue to do so. It was rewarding that we had met all of the previous recommendations and did not have any significant academic based recommendations on this occasion; it reflects that we are getting a great deal right in the education that we already provide.” For more information on the school or to receive a prospectus, please contact the Admissions Secretary, Tracy Cain on admissions@alleyn-court.co.uk

recipe of the month

Ingredients Cont... 3 tomatoes 6 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp coriander seed 2 tbsp red wine vinegar handful tarragon leaves handful mint leaves plus sprigs to decorate 6 large Barnsley lamb chops

In the Kitchen with Judy Barden

Method Get a bowl of iced water at the ready and bring a large pan of salted water to the boil. Cook the asparagus in the water for 2-3 mins until then scoop into the iced water with a slotted spoon. Cook the peas for 2 mins, then place in the iced water. Cook the broad beans for another 2 mins, pop into the iced water, then remove them from their skins. Cut a cross in the bottom of each tomato, then blanch in boiling water for about 10 secs before placing in iced water. Peel, quarter and deseed the tomatoes and cut the flesh into small chunks. Heat the oil and coriander seeds gently in a small saucepan, then take off the heat and stir through all the veg and the vinegar. Season with salt and pepper, and stir through the tarragon and mint.

Warm Salad of Spring Vegetables with Griddled Lamb chops

T

he great thing about this salad is you can either make it up as per the recipe and serve warm or leave some in the fridge and use as you need. The most time consuming part is taking the skins off the broad beans but the tiny bright green jewels you are left with are worth it.

Heat a large griddle pan or barbecue. Season the lamb with salt and pepper, and cook for 4 mins on each side for medium, or 6 mins for well done. To serve, place a small pile of vegetables on each warmed plate and top with a chop and a sprig of mint to decorate. A bowl of hot buttered new potatoes is all you need.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas DQG &KULV LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW his approach is a major

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Running Technique Is yours causing you pain?

S

ince the London Olympics in 2012 participation in adult sport in the UK has seen a substantial increase. The accessibility of running has seen it become one of the key areas of growth. It is estimated that there are now over 2 million people in the UK who run at least once a week and this statistic is borne out by the droves of people we see running along Southend seafront particularly when the sun is shining.

What? Alongside this positive statistic however is a slightly more worrying one; it is estimated that between 50 - 65% of runners will pick up some form of injury. This means potentially between 1 and 1.3 million people being injured by running. 1 – 1.3 million. That’s an awful lot of people!

Why?

this is no one. As children running is just something that you naturally do. Running though is a movement skill, one that can be taught and refined. The vast majority of us just lace up our shoes, head out of the front door and run. A few of us may follow a programme set out on a website or in a magazine and find they have real success with this to start with and so slowly the volume of running increases. If we increase running volume we are increasing stress on our body, if we are inefficient we will be increasing the stress on our body even further. It is this stress that leads to the type of overuse injuries most often seen in runners. Therefore learning how to run more efficiently should be a priority to reduce the injury risk of running. by Alastair Bennetto BSc(Hons) MCSP HCPC

So why is the injury rate for runners so high? There are many theories and arguments that surround this issue; too much training, too little training, unsupportive shoes, shoes with too much support… I could go on. One issue that does not get mentioned as often is technique, are people running properly?

Oracle Gardening

How to create a ‘Garden Room’ T

he idea of the outdoor‘room’is very much á la mode in garden design. Bringing the inside out has become a growing trend as more and more people want to utilise their garden as an extension to their house interior. In order to get the look there are a few must haves:

Seating This should be generous and luxurious. Dress your seating area with outdoor cushions to make it as inviting as possible. Intergrated seating should be as deep as possible to allow the user to lounge around, or even lay down if desired. It is worth oversizing this area of the garden of you can spare the space.

Heating Adding a heat source will extend the usability of the garden past sunset and in cooler months.Gas heaters are convenient but have a high negative environmental impact. Infra red heaters are more efficient – they only heat objects (and you) rather than the air around them – so have less impact , although they still consume a fairly large amount of energy.I prefer a real fire every time and a brazier works a treat in an outdoor room setting, providing a focal point and speaking to the primeval instinct in us all!

Using shiny surfaces will add glamour and luxury.Mix up the textures and materials to energise the space and hold the users interest. Accessorise with decorative ornaments as you would an interior – vases, statues and lanterns all work well in a garden.

Screens Adding screening helps break up the space and can actually make the garden feel much bigger. It allows you to define areas and hide away unsightly utility areas. Screens become the ‘walls’ of your outdoor room, adding height and personality. They also increase privacy and make the enclosed space more intimate and personal. A pergola can be used to support a sail or canopy to make the space even more secluded.

Planting Scale is the game changer here. Use big leafy specimens such as Dicksonia Antarctica and under-plant with evergreen grass or leafy heuchareas to make a statement. Plant in pots to re-inforce the garden room theme and repeat formal patterns to give your design a structured feel.

0

Textures Be bold with your choice of materials. Break up decking with pebbles or stone. Use creeping plants, sedums or alpines on the less trodden areas of the space. Place contrasting textures adjacent to each other to add interest, for example smooth cobbles with riven paving.

Once I had led her safely to shore, the paramedics were able to give her the attention she needed. It was a good result.”

Praised Bravery On presenting PC Bridge with his commendation last month, Chief Constable Kavanagh praised his bravery. “These are the highest recognitions that I can give,” he said. “Leadership is not about what I might have on my shoulder or my cap – leadership is about what we carry inside us.

Ensuring Safety

A

n officer from the Essex police dog unit has been honoured for his actions in saving a vulnerable woman from the sea at Southend. PC Dave Bridge was presented with a commendation by Chief Constable Stephen Kavanagh, along with a certificate from the Royal Humane Society for his quick-thinking, bravery and professionalism when he waded into the sea to rescue the woman.

“The public need to hear about officers that wade into the sea in the middle of the night and these truly remarkable actions underline the extraordinary lengths that you go to every day to ensure the safety of the people of Essex.”

The officer was on routine patrol with police dog Diesel when he received a call at around 1am of a high-risk missing person in the Southend area.

A. It doesn͛tt matter how many hooks and deadbolts you have. It͛s It͛s all down to the snap security o off the Euro Cyliinder Cyl er.. Once the cylinder has been snapped the other secondary security devices are useless as the door can be opened in seconds. Q. My Euro Cylinder has a British ͚͚K Kitemark͛, will it be snap secure? A. The British Kitemark standard BS EN 303: 2005 does not cover snap resistance Cylinders with snap lines can be attacked again beyond the shear line which releases the cam and gives access. Only the snap secure locking cam of the ABS lock can provide a total block to the locking mechanism. Q. My Euro Cylinder has sacrificial sections to stop snapping attacks. A. Snap o off ff sections will slow down the attack, but only by a couple o off seconds. The Sold Secure Diamond and BSI TS007: 2012 3 star accreditations that ABS has mean that the Euro Cylinder is snap secure without the need for additional security handles or cylinder guards. 41, Alexandra Street, Southend-on-Sea, Essex ex,, SS1 1BW
