Move Well, Live Well and Feel Good

H

ow many of us have had that moment when we just about squeeze into our favourite trousers or outfit and beat ourselves up for not doing something about it? Or, of continuously buying new clothes when actually what we are not happy with is our body shape?

To make changes to the way we feel or look often seems to be a huge step or commitment as it usually involves radical philosophies, quick fix ideas that don’t work, extreme measures or a diet. And that just only adds to the burden of everything you need to get done in your day.

Generally, we are eating ourselves fat because our attentions are elsewhere and we don’t put any effort into or focus on ourselves. Instead, we first make sure that those around us, our children, parents and partner are satisfied and happy. Our work duties or other commitments also take priority. We indulge ourselves with what seems like a quick treat, but these rarely relate to our true needs or delights or give us what we really find pleasurable. Our indulgences linger or come about from old habits.

Simply Stride is different. The program is based on a progressive walking technique and our Mindful Living ethos which enables a harmonious time-tested relationship to body, food and living. It enables you to feel more comfortable in your skin. And as you evolve and adapt, so does this life changing walking course.

We also have the compounded problem of there being two versions of ourselves: the one who wants to be slim and healthy and the other that wants something else like that chocolate biscuit and right now! Simply Stride enables us to make friends with both these versions of you and to be your own Master of willpower and pleasure!

6

ORACLE-ON-SEA

So what is Mindful Living? What is it? The ongoing practice, during your daily activities, of functional exercises to make your body stronger, fitter and you more confident, healthy and happy and making realistic choices about how you fuel and nourish your body. Why? Because it’s easy to do, feels great, is a real treat for your body and is life-changing! When? At any time... How? Support, tone and move your body well; eat good food and incorporate the Simply Stride

advices and techniques for long lasting improvements to health and well being.

Path to inspiration

The Simply Stride Technique, combined with Mindful Living gives you a balanced approach to life with simple intelligent strategies you can own for yourself. Simply, by nourishing and moving yourself well you will be enabled to pursue your true pleasures. The Simply Stride Technique and strategies are easy to use and simple to apply and are so efficient as you use them all the time, with no need to find specific time for the gym. It feels like an escape, a breath of fresh air as you have a way of life that gives you a lifelong commitment and strategy to health. So here are some Stride stories from real life people with great results: ‘ I started Simply Stride as an activity for ‘me time’ and because I wanted to achieve a feeling of well being. An added bonus is that I lost over a stone in weight too’ Mags Guppy, Leigh-on-Sea ‘I took up Simply Stride after a bereavement to focus on something positive. I use Stride as part of a weekly exercise routine. My posture has improved to an extent that I no longer suffer from lower backache and as a result I am walking faster and for longer distances. After feeling such positive results I encouraged my husband to join me and we now walk together and he often Strides around the city during his lunch break’ Liz & Bill Katesmark, Chalkwell

‘ I have been Striding for 9 months and have lost two stone, lowered my blood pressure, lost 12 inches in my overall body measurements. I am fitter and more able to do what I have to do in daily life but excitingly, it has enabled me to ride a bike, which I now do regularly, for the first time since I was a child’ Eileen Levensen, Thorpe Bay. Simply Stride is available in weekly group sessions, or a one to one basis known as ‘My Stride’. Stride can also be coached for a group, whether it is friends, colleagues or family, and we can tailor the sessions for the needs of your group. To find out more about Simply Stride to get you feeling good about yourself, take a look at our website www.simplystride.co.uk or please call us on 07967 705547. Feel good in the way you move, Simply Stride.

the road each day as the containers will largely travel by a designated railway system into London & the south which will avoid stock being shipped up north to retailers warehouses and then shipped back south when required. Hotels in the Thurrock area in particular are experiencing high occupancy, full with contractors in the weekdays and Premier Inn have announced a few new builds in the area because they see an opportunity. Paramount Studios have acquired a site near Gravesend in Kent, this will have a major impact on this area. Also the proposed lower Thames crossing is currently in negotiations about where it will be placed, if not directly into the Theme park. 27,000 jobs & the third biggest theme park in the world is a serious deal.

What impact will these developments have on the local area? The only council currently to account for the potential of new incoming residents to the area is Thurrock council with forecasts to allocate the building of some 17,000 properties but will this be enough? Previous forecasts have detailed that 28,000 extra properties will be needed.

House prices have risen well over the last 2 years and in my opinion the activity in the area will compound this and this could have an effect on properties further afield in our own area, rents could be driven higher by a possible shortage of property. When considering buy-to-let investment the property purchase should be approached with caution as it would need to be the right type of property in the right location. The postal address of a particular property may sound attractive, but quite often thousands of pounds can be saved by buying at the edge of that area; meaning that your tenant still gets a great property in a good area, close to everything they require. You save money in the process and get a good rental return. The new increase in economy, changes to properties and the local landscape will have an impact on Southend and the whole of Essex greatly, offering a lot of potential investment and job opportunities.

ell, that’s it then. As the glorious summer fades into memory there’s still every reason not to pack away your sunglasses alongside your swimwear and summer wardrobe. True, most of us associate cool shades with balmy, sunny days but even at this time of the year – and beyond - it’s still really important to have them to hand as autumn turns into winter. It’s an accepted fact that Ultra Violet (UV) rays can contribute to a range of eye diseases and contribute greatly to the ageing process. So, your sunglasses can play a significant part in your health, as well as your street cred. Teaming a sympathetic shade of lipstick with sunglasses can also work wonders for a tired and pale ‘winter complexion’, plus your trusty sunnies can hide a multitude of other sins to boot; especially as we gear up for the festive party season! My golden rules for looking cool are: 1) stick to matte textures - because shiny frames and a glossy pout are a total no-no. 2) soft tortoiseshell and neutral hues add slick sophistication. If it’s colour you’re after, then take note from Cheryl Cole and Beyonce and stick to rule number

of matching your hair, glasses and lips. Why? It's just not a look, Tiger! Neither is going gothic. Berry-coloured lips are great this time of year too, but don't pair them with seriously dark sunglasses. Unless your Rihanna. In which case, knock yourself out, girls! Choosing a frame that complements your face shape is also one of the most important considerations. Lucky you if you’ve got an oval face, as it really is anything goes with this type of fizzog. If you are round-faced, wide, rectangular frames are ideal and those with a heart-shaped face should go for ‘Cat’s Eye,’ or round frames. Oversized or wrap styles are ideal for longer faces. If you’ve got a square face, avoid anything sharp or geometric and for those with diamond features, I’d advise nothing wider than the top of your cheekbones. Eyewear spans styles and social situations from classic aviators to chunky square frames, funky sports to flamboyant designer brands; whether you’re on the piste, strolling along the esplanade or just rocking the film star look, the future’s bright, you gotta wear shades! Sponsored by

O

3) keep your shades on the darker side to balance out the brighter hues. 4) whilst a bit of colour is never a bad thing, stay clear

re you bored with your Lounge, Bedroom, Dining Room or any other living space in your home? Do you admire other peoples homes but struggle to finish your room to the same standard? This month I aim to help breathe new life into your home and kickstart your creativity. So where do we start? We stop noticing the things that surround us after a while so it’s important that you remove as much as possible from the room. Clear surfaces, shelves, window sills and take down pictures. Now you have a blank canvas you can really start to see the space with fresh eyes. Are you happy with the colours on the walls? Does it need freshening up with a lick of paint or a few drops of wallpaper? Ensure all curtains or blinds are hung properly and cables are tidied. Now, furniture, could it be repositioned? Your sofa does not need to be up against a wall, try moving it into the space. Sofas or chairs facing one another make the space more intimate and homely. Now add side tables with Lamps, Vases of beautiful faux flowers (saving on the cost of buying fresh ones week after week!). Think outside the box, refresh the layout for minimal cost and change the way the room looks and feels for the better. Once the layout is complete you can start reintroducing a few well chosen accessories.

20

ORACLE-ON-SEA

A few design tips to steal 1 Don’t make everything too symmetrical, group pictures in odd numbers and candles in different heights. 2 It is not necessary to make everything colour matched. We want to create an effortless stylish look rather than looking like you’ve tried too hard! Add a few complementary colours or tones of colour to create visual interest. 3 Texture and colour can be added with Glassware and faux flowers. Again you could try arranging a group of different height vases with stunning floral arrangements. 4 Freshen up your sofa’s and chairs by adding new cushions and maybe a throw. 5 Lighting is probably the most important factor in creating atmosphere. Use lamps and good quality candles wherever possible. Attention to detail is the key to turning something from everyday average to amazing. Give it a go and see if you can make your visitors envious of your design savvy style!

New proposals to restrict teenage driving.

T

here are current proposals to restrict teenagers from taking their driving test until they are 18. Under this scheme, teenagers would have to wait until they were 19 to hold a full licence that could be a whole year after they have taken their test. But is this really fair? If a 30 year old was to take their driving test, they would be just as inexperienced as a 19 year old and yet they wouldn’t have to wait a whole year before they could receive their full licence. They also wouldn’t be restricted from using hands free or driving at night within the first year of passing their test, even though they would not have any more driving experience than an 18 year old. The TRL believe that this will save accidents and casualties, but will it just delay the driving process? Young drivers will be unable to gain necessary road experience if they are not allowed to drive at night. Will this mean that there will be more accidents seen with 19 and 20 year olds instead of 17 and 18 year olds? In a report produced by the Transport Research Laboratory we have learnt that the introduction of a ‘graduated driver licensing scheme’ would result in annual savings of around 4,471 casualties and £224 million. Young drivers are involved in around 20% of all crashes where someone is killed or seriously injured, even though they equate to only around 5% of all the miles driven on Britain’s roads.

24

ORACLE-ON-SEA

The new scheme would introduce a ‘learner stage’ beginning at the age of 17, lasting 12 months. This would require log book records of at least 120 hours of supervised practise, with 20 hours of this being at night. After passing their test, new drivers would be required to carry a green ‘P’ plate on their car as well as a ban from carrying passengers under 30 or from driving between the hours of 10pm and 5am unless accompanied by an adult over 30. There would also be a years restriction on night driving and using a hands free mobile for all new drivers. Currently drivers in England, Scotland and Wales have to pass a theory test followed by a practical test in order to retain a full driving licence at the age of 17 (or 16 for some people holding a mobility benefit). This could be the introduction of a bleak future for young drivers, taking away the freedom of young people and causing them to walk alone at night as they are unable to drive, and unable to afford a taxi. Is that really safer? Sponsored by:

To the Top! Essex Hairdresser aims to be first person with cystic fibrosis to reach summit of Mount Kilimanjaro

T

wo hairdressers from Southend-on-Sea are currently in training for a 6-day trek to top of Mount Kilimanjaro in order to raise £8000 for the Southend Cystic Fibrosis Association. The charity is very close to the heart of Grateful Heads owner Craig Smith, as his work colleague and co-climber Joe Tonge suffers from the disease – and when (not if) they make the summit, 19-year old Joe from Westcliff-on-Sea will make history as the first ever person with cystic fibrosis to conquer Kilimanjaro. L to R - Craig Smith & Joe Tonge

Cystic Fibrosis (CF) is the UK's most common, life-threatening, inherited disease. It affects vital organs in the body, especially the lungs and pancreas, clogging them with thick, sticky mucus. The lungs become progressively more damaged by bacterial infections as a result. There is no cure for Cystic Fibrosis, and the life expectancy is around 30. Mount Kilimanjaro in Tanzania is the highest peak in Africa at a towering 5,895 meters (19,341 feet). Craig and Joe’s mammoth trek gets underway on 21 February 2014 and it will take them 6-days – 4 days to climb up and 2 days to descend – using the 37-mile (62 kms) Machame route, known amongst climbers as the ‘Whiskey Route’ due to the toughness of the climb. The pair are currently fundraising for their attempt. As well as sponsor forms and a weekly raffle with wonderful – often money cannot buy - prizes in their Alexandra Street salon. Joe says “It’s going to be a really tough challenge for us both but we are absolutely determined to do this, not only to raise as much money as we can for this really great charity that does a massive amount for people like me with CF, but also so I can raise awareness about this disease and prove that it won’t stop me living my life to the maximum.” To find out more pop in the salon, give the boys a call on 01702 340965 or visit their website: www.gratefulheads.co.uk

recipe of the month

2. Place the herbs, breadcrumbs, lemon zest and olive oil in a bowl and mix together well. Rub the herb mix into the opened up piece of pork so it is well coated. Then fold up the pork.

In the Kitchen with Judy Barden

3. Take a large piece of foil and use the pancetta two pieces end to end and then another two slightly overlapping until you have a rectangle large enough to wrap around the pork. Place the pork in the centre and then using the foil bring the pancetta up each side to totally enclose the meat. Now tightly enclose the whole thing with the foil making sure you twist the ends so the parcel is tight, like a big sausage. 4. Heat the oven to 200c/fan 180/gas 6. Now place a heavy based roasting tin on the hob over a high heat and add the vegetable oil. Put the foil parcel in the tin and turn every two minutes so that every part of the parcel has had contact with the heat. This will seal the outside and give it a little colour. Put in the oven and roast for 45-60 mins depending on thickness.

5. Remove the pork and check with a skewer inserted through the foil to the middle that the juices run clear. Leave to stand for 5 minutes. 6. Whilst the pork is resting place all the

Serves 6-8 1. Lay the pork on a board and with a sharp knife, make an incision in the meat halfway down, running parallel to the board. Cut almost all the way through so that you can open the meat like a book. ( the butcher will do this if you ask) Season the inside with salt and freshly ground black pepper 32

Oracle IT Support

Need for Speed? Part 2 S

peeding up your computer in three easy steps: Step 2

Assuming you carried out step 1 in October’s Oracle, here’s step 2. Internet Explorer is often given bad press. Yet overtime your internet browser collects many settings that you do not need or want. Users are often advised to download Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox. This is the equivalent of replacing your car, rather than working out why it won’t run properly! Internet Explorer is regularly updated and supported by Microsoft, so you just need to know how to handle it. So how do we speed it up? Simple. You need to remove all the temporary files and prevent all the unwanted settings, from hindering your surfing experience and you do not even need to open your browser! Click your Start> type the following into ‘search programs and files’ and press enter: inetcpl.cpl The internet properties window appears and this is where all the magic starts. Go to the ‘Advanced’ tab. A long list of settings is displayed. Scroll down until you get to ‘Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed’ and tick the box.

Once completed, you will see a Reset button at the bottom of the window. Don’t be afraid as this is a friendly reset and will not remove any data. Click it. The question ‘Are you sure?’ is always a spooky one. You will notice a tick box to ‘Delete personal settings’. I personally check this box, to do a full reset but you should only do this if you know all your passwords and book marks to websites you regularly visit, like online banking, otherwise you would have to obtain that information again. Upon clicking Reset, your PC will no longer be bogged down with add on files that it no longer requires and this helps the browser run more efficiently. Our next tip will help your PC start up much faster. If you have questions regarding this article, please feel free use our FREE online chat service at http://www.resinfo-tech.co.uk . by Ray Snow

Health & Beauty

Grow Older More Gracefully ‘Middle age is when your age starts to show around your middle’. Bob Hope

E

xercise and physical activity are among the healthiest things you can do for yourself, but some older adults are reluctant to get involved. Some are afraid that exercise will be too strenuous or that physical activity will harm them. Yet, scientific studies show that exercise is safe for people of all age groups, and that older adults hurt their health far more by not exercising.

Doing activities such as walking, swimming, or even raking up leaves or mowing grass will increase your heart rate and breathing for an extended period of time. Build up your endurance gradually, starting with as little as five minutes. Even those who are chair or bed-bound can do something. Your local GP will be able to advise you on a whole raft of ideas and exercises.

An inactive lifestyle can cause older people to lose ground in areas that are important for staying healthy and independent: strength, balance, flexibility, and endurance. Regular exercise can help older adults feel better and enjoy life more, even those who think they're too old or out of shape.

You might be in the autumn of your life but just like the season, it is still a great time of your life to get out there and adore Nature’s gym. Fill your lungs with that crisp air, appreciate the amazing colours of the countryside as you walk the dog, do a spot of gardening or even take up a new hobby. It is all good for mind and body.

Increasing strength and endurance makes it easier to climb stairs and carry shopping, improving your balance can help to prevent falls and developing flexibility keeps you mobile and may speed recovery from injuries. Strength exercises build muscle as well as increasing metabolism, which helps to keep your weight and blood sugar levels in check.

So no more excuses. Get out there and hold back the years and remember I offer a free consultation to anyone who is looking to make positive changes to their health and fitness, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch.

Every year, hospitals experience thousands of admissions due to broken hips caused by falls. Balance training will develop stronger leg muscles and reduce your risk of suffering a painful injury.

Clean and dry the chicken cubes using a kitchen towel. The marinade works best if the chicken is dried thoroughly of any moisture. Add half of the Salt, half of the Lemon juice and half of the Ginger Garlic Paste to the chicken. Mix well and refrigerate for an hour.

M

alai Chicken Tikka – tender and succulent pieces of chicken marinated in a fragrantly spiced and thick creamy base. Tandoori Chicken or Chicken Tikka are common place on many Indian restaurant menus, what’s different about the Malai dish is the cream cheese element that is added to the marinade. This gives the dish a wonderful creaminess and melt-in-your-mouth quality that is sure to tickle the taste buds.

Ingredients: 500grm Boneless Chicken (1.5inch) Cubes 2tbsp Greek Style Yoghurt 4tbsp Fresh Cream 2 Fresh Green Chillies 1½tbsp Ginger & Garlic Paste Salt to taste 1tbsp Lemon Juice 2 Egg Yolks 2tbsp Cream Cheese 4tbsp Fresh Chopped Coriander ½tbsp White pepper powder ¼ tbsp. Green Cardamom powder ½tbsp Garam Masala Powder 2tbsp Melted Butter

NOVEMBER 2013

Grind to a paste the green chillies with the chopped coriander using the remaining half of the Lemon Juice. Do not use water to grind. Then mix all the remaining ingredients to this paste. Now add this to the marinated chicken cubes, mixing thoroughly. Refrigerate for a further 4 hours or preferably overnight. Finally, thread the chicken cubes on skewers (if these are wooden, then remember to soak them first in water for 30 minutes before use, to prevent them burning under the grill). And place under a grill at 200°c for 10-12 minutes. Turn the skewers over once the chicken begins to change colour and brush with some melted butter. Keep an eye on it to prevent it from burning. It is ready once there is slight charring round the edges. This makes a wonderful appetiser and is a great party dish. It is best served hot with grilled vegetable and some mint & coriander chutney.
