Christmas entertaining made easy: The Holiday Inn Southend guide to throwing the ultimate festive party!

A

s every good parent, grandparent, auntie and uncle knows, this is the crucial time of year when Santa and his Little Helpers are putting the finishing touches to all the toys for little boys and girls around the world at Christmas. But why should the kids have all the fun? Christmas is for grown-ups too and just as receiving the perfect toy is important for children, having the best bash is important for adults. At the Holiday Inn Southend, Hayley O’Connell is the popular hotel’s expert party planner and here are her top tips for the ultimate Christmas party. “For me, the perfect party is one that lives on in the memory long after the last glass of wine has been sipped and the final mince pie nibbled. If you’re hosting your own event, the key is meticulous planning. Alternatively, you can come to somewhere like the Holiday Inn Southend,” says Hayley.“A party planner like me will help you to coordinate your event, meaning you’re still very much involved with the ideas side of things whilst the practical stuff is taken out of your hands, giving you that all-important time to relax and enjoy the whole process.”

a mixture of new and old friends, makes for a good atmosphere.”

Moderate expectations Rule number two is K.I.S.S – Keep It Simple, Stupid. “Christmas is a time when people moderate their expectations. They don’t necessarily want something too fancy, but that shouldn’t be an excuse for serving boring food. You have to balance tradition with a bit of panache. Our amazing chef, Micky is offering customers a choice between Roast Turkey and all the trimmings, a delicious Roulade of Salmon, Spinach and Hake or a beautiful Vegetable Wellington.” For any party, the music really matters. If your record collection isn’t exactly stellar, or wide-ranging, you can

The first place to start with is the guest list.“Try not to play it safe,” advises Hayley. “Mix the generations, careers and backgrounds. Different personalities and

risk inflicting your musical preferences on your guests. This is where a good DJ is worth their weight in gold. “After a great meal and a good chat round the dinner table, we find that guests really enjoy sliding their chairs back and hitting the dance floor. Our Fire & Ice festive-themed parties have those two essential elements for a great Christmas party - terrific food and cracking tunes.” Here in Britain, Christmas is synonymous with excess. It’s important to be realistic and expect your guests to drink heartily but there should always be a limit, warns Hayley: “The office party is a great excuse to let your hair down and have fun at the end of the year but it is always best to err on the side of caution. Getting blind drunk in front of the boss carries all sorts of perils?! What’s also really good about the Holiday Inn is that we have a secure, well lit car park, so if you do end up having one too many we can call a taxi to get you home safe and sound, allowing you to pick up your car the next day.” Boredom is an often over-looked factor when it comes to enjoying a little too much party spirit. If the conversation is hardly fizzing at the dinner table, guests can feel their moods flatten.“Know your guests and seat them accordingly is a great rule of thumb” says Hayley.“Try to give everyone the best seat for their particular personality but avoid putting couples or best friends together. It’s also worth getting people to move around after each course. For a company event this encourages greater relationship-building and creates a sense of togetherness with colleagues you wouldn’t normally talk to.”

Finally, knowing when to let go is also important. You may have taken the principal role in planning the party but now is your time to kick back, relax and enjoy yourself along with everyone else. At the Holiday Inn Southend you can join a Fire & Ice Party Night from as little as £24.95 per person or hire one of their wonderful function rooms for your own special event – that Hayley will help you make really special. With the food prepared by expert chefs, using locally-sourced ingredients, attentive staff to look after the assembled company and the DJ ready to get them winding their waists to the bassline, you’re assured of a night to remember at the Holiday Inn Southend this Christmas, for all the right reasons.

Save 10% There's a fantastic 10% off the Holiday Inn Southend's 'Fire & Ice' themed Christmas party nights if you book before October 31st. For more information call Hayley on 01702 209 086 / 01702 543 001, or send an email to Christmas@hisouthend.com

Care for the Elderly S

tatistics tell us that there will be a significant ageing in the population of the UK with over 28.5% of the population being over 60 by 2035, and while the population of Southend-on-Sea will increase by 6% in the period from 2012 to 2020 the number of residents over 65 will increase by 14% during that period with the number of people aged over 85 predicted to increase by 16%. These extra years of life will often involve poor health, dementia or disability putting greater pressure on social and health services. This is where AGE Concern comes in.

Caring for Over 40 years

to increase. This is evidenced by the increasing number of people that use the befriending service offered by AGE Concern Southend-on-Sea ("ACSOS"). This service seeks to provide comfort, friendship and practical help to residents in the borough of Southend-on-Sea who feel isolated or who need support in maintaining the lifestyle they wish to lead. In addition to providing company, weekly visits also enable the ACSOS volunteer to monitor the well-being of the person being visited. This is an invaluable service in that any signs of deterioration in the health of the person being visited can be reported to the appropriate authority at the earliest possible stage. Our ‘visitees’ have also told ACSOS volunteers that simply receiving a weekly visit makes them feel better and improves their mental well-being.

Age Concern has had a presence in the town for over 40 years (in those days we were Southend Old Peoples Welfare). We became known as AGE Concern in 1993. We are based at 134 Hamlet Court Road, Westcliff on Sea, Essex SS0 7LN. 01702 New - Driving service 345373 We are very pleased to welcome callers; Another very in-demand service we provide is many of those who visit us have a variety of issues that of our voluntary drivers for medical transport to be dealt with and our friendly and helpful staff (which includes GPs, Hospital, Chiropody and other are more than pleased to assist them. clinics), along with our NEW driving service which We provide a number of important services; includes shopping, veterinary, clubs and day probably the most important is our befriending centres or visiting loved ones in homes or service. The number of elderly people requiring hospital. transport and attending appointments or activities. ACSOS's volunteer drivers provide transport to and from the appointment or activity, and this service really helps to alleviate isolation and assists the social re-integration of our elderly residents. There is no set charge for this service; we just ask that the person being provided with the lift pays the volunteer driver a modest mileage charge.

Help and Advice ACSOS also provides general advice and information for our elderly residents. This can include assisting them to find a reputable tradesman, asking the DWP to provide benefit assessments, providing details of local clubs or simply advising them which agencies can help them resolve their problem. We also have a volunteer “handyman” who will help resolve small problems that the elderly may have, for example, putting up curtains, tuning televisions, changing smoke alarm batteries or light bulbs. Other services include the launch of our brand new ‘directory of local services for local people’ in January 2015 which will contain adverts from local tradesmen all of which have been interviewed by either the ACSOS Manager or Chairman. Alongside this, we will be producing a newsletter three times a year which will give details of our, and other local events, important information along with local news and fun articles. We hire wheelchairs and also have hearing aid batteries at the office for exchange, whether personally or by post. This is a fantastic Charity. Our vision is to be the ‘Go to agency for the elderly of Southend on Sea’ …. a big ambition for a small stand alone charity, but we feel strongly that by working with other local charities, we can enhance the life of our elderly residents, and the support that is provided.

Join our team To achieve our vision … we need YOU!! In order to meet the increase in demand that we are experiencing for our services we are growing our team of volunteers. ACSOS can only deliver its services with the help of its brilliant team of volunteers. Whether it be befriending, driving or working alongside the regular team in the office – our volunteers are a very special group of people who get as much out of volunteering, if not more, as the elderly people that we help. If you would like to find out more about becoming a volunteer, our services or if you know of an elderly resident of Southend on Sea who could benefit from our services, please call 01702 345373. I look forward to hearing from you.

Oracle Hair & Beauty

Want to look great this autumn? I’m your Fall guy… A h, autumn. Season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. The palette of rich, earthy colours, brilliant blue skies with little fluffy clouds and leaves blowing on the wind signal the end of summer and herald the oncoming winter.

Get me being all romantic and poetic! The changing seasons can make you feel a bit down and wistful but I’ve got some fabulous ideas to make sure you look and feel fabulous this autumn. Let’s start with your eyebrows. Full brows are more flattering, so tweeze out strays and then fill in your brows with a pencil one shade lighter than your natural brow colour. This creates a softer, more natural effect and avoids the dreaded Scouse Brow look. Treat yourself to a rotating cleansing brush and you’ll never look at a humble flannel in the same way again. The micro-massaging bristles help to loosen trapped makeup and dirt without the need for harsh scrubbing.

Khaki Nails Get autumnal colours nailed. Khaki on your nails? Trust me, olive green is surprisingly flattering for all skin tones and shows a bolder, more creative you. Plum colours are so last year, anyway.

preservatives, synthetics, and artificial oils.

If you feel like your hair needs some autumnal TLC (Tender Lovin’ Craigness), consider a bob. It’s a versatile cut that suits every face shape and you can wear it straight and sleek, or tousled and carefree. Either way is H.O.T. In America, they’re going shorter (stopping at the jawline) and razor-cutting layers all over for a softer, choppier finish. I also like the slightly longer, below-the-chin style - a la Jessica Alba.

Warm up tones One colour that’s synonymous with autumn is red. Release your inner ginger like Drew Barrymore and Scarlett Johansson have done recently and see how the colour warms up your own skin tones. One way to become a redhead is to try an at-home foam hair colour product, which is drip-free and spreads easily. My tip would be to go for copper if you’re fair, auburn for tanned skin, and mahogany for dark tones. Of course, the golden rule should be, if in doubt ask your regular hairdresser for help and advice. by Craig Smith

If you’ve not already discovered it, then prepare to be wowed by mineral makeup. This healthy new trend offers your skin healthy, natural ingredients like seaweed and soya bean extract which are free from

During a meeting with one of Boris’s Deputy Mayors, and after lecturing me for a considerable time on all the positives about Boris’s proposed airport, went off a bit disillusioned after I said that I would not be supporting the proposal, stating that: “even if the Airport Commission does not support Boris Island the mayor will continue to appeal the decision.” This is concerning for a number of reasons as apart from the considerable costs associated with trying to appeal the decision (which of course comes from taxes), they continue to ignore Southend, Essex, Medway and Kent County Councils. These local authorities are responsible for millions of people, yet we have one man that thinks he knows best and will continue with his dream irrespective of the thoughts of others.

No benifit to town It seems to me that everyone in the world, apart from the Mayor of London, recognises that the so-called ‘Boris Island’ is not a suitable place for an airport. There would be so many obstacles to overcome and it would not benefit Southendon-Sea one iota.

20

ORACLE-ON-SEA

What it would do however is lead to the closure of our airport and with it the opportunity of employment, local economic growth and regeneration.

I am personally pleased that the Airport Commission has now rejected this idea and I hope that the Government focuses on delivering sustainable growth at regional airports such as Southend.

Library Review I’m pleased to announce that Cllr Graham Longley has completed this review and his recommendations, which I fully endorse, are that in Shoeburyness the two libraries will be merged into one new site and the redevelopment and retention of Southchurch Library will be accelerated. Every library will regain their independence; have Wi-Fi, with the new Forum acting as a hub for all other libraries which will all have a minimum of a full time equivalent member of staff supported by trained volunteers. All libraries will also be able to raise additional income, have the flexibility and opportunity to adjust their opening times and use any available space to benefit the local community. recipe of the month

115g/4oz cold butter, cut into small cubes 4-5 tbsp cold water 1 free-range egg, lightly beaten

In the Kitchen with Judy Barden

Preheat the oven to 200C/400F/Gas 6.

1. For the filling, place the pieces of pepper, carrots and butternut squash into a deep-sided, lidded pan. Add enough boiling water to just cover the vegetables. Cover the pan with the lid and return to the boil. Boil for four minutes, or until the vegetables are tender, then drain well. Transfer the drained vegetables to a large bowl and add the remaining filling ingredients. Mix together until well combined, then set aside until completely cool. 2. For the pastry, in a bowl, mix together the flour, ground turmeric and salt in a bowl until well combined. Add the butter cubes and rub them into the flour using your fingertips until the mixture resembles breadcrumbs . Add the water, a tablespoon at a time, stirring the mixture with a spoon, until it comes together as a dough. (NB: You may not need to use all of the water.) Roll the dough into a ball, wrap in cling film and chill in the fridge for 20 minutes.

Tasty Cheese and Vegetable Pasties

S

treet Food has become so popular with stalls being set up all over London and is a much nicer way of eating fast food. This is the Caribbean equivalent to our Cornish Pasty and is really tasty and suitable for vegetarians. The pastry has turmeric in to give it a lovely yellow colour and you can fill them with whatever meat or vegetables you like. Enjoy!

For the filling: 1 yellow pepper, seeds removed, cut into 1cm/ ½ in pieces 150g/5½oz carrots, trimmed, cut into 1cm/ ½ in pieces 300g/10oz butternut squash, peeled, seeds removed, flesh cut into 1cm/½in pieces 5cm/2in piece fresh root ginger, peeled, grated 4 tbsp chopped fresh coriander leaves 4 spring onions, trimmed, finely chopped 200g/7oz canned sweetcorn kernels, drained and rinsed 100g/3½oz Double Gloucester cheese, grated 2-4 tsp salt

3. When the pastry has chilled, roll it out onto a lightly floured work surface to a 0.5cm/¼in thickness. Cut six to eight 7.5cm/3in discs from the pastry using a cookie cutter or upturned mug. Divide the filling mixture equally among the pastry discs, covering only one half of each disc and leaving a 1cm/½in border at the edge of each. Brush the edges of the pastry discs lightly with some of the beaten egg, then fold the free half of each disc over the filled half and press down the edges to seal using a fork. 4. Brush the tops of the patties with the remaining beaten egg. Line a baking tray with greaseproof paper and place the patties onto it. Bake the patties in the oven for 20-25 minutes, or until the pastry is goldenbrown.

Next month’s recipe: Quick Chinese Chilli Beef

Mobile Website Solutions

For the pastry: 225g/8oz plain flour, plus extra for dusting 1½ tsp ground turmeric pinch salt

Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions,by using the recommended detergent and taking safety precautions.

Pressure washing patio and decking tips

• Sweep away loose dirt and debris with a stiff broom and remove items in vicinity

Pressure Washing Essentials

P

ressure washing, also known as power washing, is a great way to effectively clean your outdoor surfaces.

• Keep lance about fifteen cm from ground • Set the nozzle to‘fan’, rather than‘jet’ • Blast away dirt in a gentle, sweeping motion • Rinse with a lower pressure setting • Make sure the sockets you use are protected by an RCD (Residual Current Device). Water and electricity can spell danger!

Pressure washers work by sucking up water from a hosepipe and spraying it at very high pressure onto surfaces, effectively blasting away the dirt.

What are the benefits?

• Pressure washing uses 80% less water than hosepipes • Pressure washing is also 10-50 times more powerful than a hosepipe

What else should I consider?

Types of pressure washer

Final thoughts Choose your washer carefully. If you use a pressure washer not designed for the work you are using it for, it will wear out and break. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas DQG &KULV LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW his approach is a major

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
