Do you own a conservatory not fit for purpose? HMS Leigh The Bravest Pier in the World

Join us to celebrate the Centenary of the Royal British Legion 1921-2021 and WW2 Southend

outhend Pier is an icon with a past, a true survivor with an incredible history that makes it the perfect backdrop to bring all ages together even during a pandemic. It is also a fitting place to hold a major celebration of the centenary of the Royal British Legion in Southend-on-Sea, which we are delighted to announce is going to be taking place September 23rd-26th 2021. Many people have walked out to sea on Southend Pier, or taken the picturesque train journey but up until recently not so many would have known the crucial part it played in WW2, where it became the Guardian of the Thames.

Southend Pier was built to help people visit the town and for many years saw many thousands of holidaymakers arrive. However, it was to become essential to the war effort in September 1939 when it became the Naval Control Centre for the Thames Estuary and was renamed HMS Leigh, with surrounding areas becoming HMS Westcliff. It was a crucial mustering point for convoys and over the course of the war 3,367 convoys, comprising 84,297 vessels departed from HMS Leigh.

Huge success The original event was part of a Heritage Lottery funded project run by Blade Education aimed to connect children with those with lived experience of WW2 culminating in an event held on the 75th Anniversary of VE Day to bring all ages together August 2021

LOCAL ISSUES to celebrate this amazing piece of history, as well as bringing to life through veterans, researchers, actors and exhibitions the exhilaration and sadness that came with the declaration of peace. When this was unable to take place in person, it went online and the Make Do and Mend Festival was a huge success reaching over 140,000 people on social media. As this project has continued to grow during the pandemic, thanks to the generosity of our researchers and family historians it is now hopefully going to be able to turn into something even greater than was initially intended.

Explosives dropped The story of HMS Leigh is the story of the people and events around Southend Pier from 1939 to 1945. This was a time of everyday heroes and heroines who worked tirelessly to protect the community they were proud to be a part of and the families they loved. HMS Leigh was the departure point for thousands of convoys during WW2 and played a truly remarkable role in the defence of Britain.

If parents hadn’t had the strength to send the children away to greater safety, the death toll would have undoubtedly been far higher. During the pandemic most of us haven’t starved but at the date of writing this article nearly 600 people have died from Covid-19 and many people are still struggling with the effects of the virus.

This service will also be available online for anyone who wants to view the event from the foreshore or in the comfort of their own home. It will also be broadcast live on BBC Essex who are a media partner for this event. Thursday 23rd and Friday 24th – all schools in Southend are being invited to experience HMS Leigh with actors, films and displays.

Saturday 25th – The Shoeburyness Branch of the Royal Artillery Association are bringing WW2 artillery land guns to share with the general public. All visitors are invited to view the Memory Garden that celebrates those who died in WW2 as well as victims of Covid 19, as well as bring their own photographs and memories for us to share. Local Branches of charities such as The Royal British Legion, the Royal Naval Association, the Essex Society for Family History, the Royal National Lifeboat Institution and the Coastguard have stalls and marquees with volunteers to collect for the charity. There will be live performances, character actors and the RNLI will be doing displays as well as opening up the usually restricted land end station on both days.

Sunday 26th at 3pm honoured guests, residents and veterans will be invited to a special service, led by Revd David Wylie, RN at the end of the Pier. Standards will travel, hand to hand from volunteers and cadets down the Pier. In the Estuary, a flotilla of vessels will honour the Royal British Legion and Southend, past and present as an homage to D-Day – when there were so many vessels in the Estuary that sailors could walk from ship to shore. So far, the Endeavour, the Letitia and other small ships have confirmed they will be attending. Invitations are going out asap to all local yacht clubs and sailing groups in the borough.

he Hares About Town sculpture trail of 30 hares have been let loose round and about Southend on Seaand it’s the talk of the town! Southends’ residents and visitors have already flocked to the trail in droves with many taking selfies, posing with the sculptures and sharing on social media under the tag @HaresAboutTown @HavensHospices.

From running and cycling groups, to friends meeting up to walk the trail – everyone LOVES the colour that has been brought to the town. Spend it local! S

ummer is here, the kids are oﬀ school, and life is finally starting to feel a little bit more normal. It has been a turbulent year and a half, and all of us had to adapt rapidly – not least our local businesses.

Recently, whilst out and about in Southend, I spotted a sign by one cafe that got me thinking. It read something along the lines of: “If every adult in the UK spent £5 per week in their local shops and businesses, it would be worth £13.5 billion to the local economy over the course of a year”. After a bit of research, it turns out this was the findings of an independent study and, if correct, a small commitment from all of us could really make a big impact. A nationally recognised brand That’s because choosing to shop local has many benefits. These businesses are the backbone of our economy. Not only do they often provide a more personal service, they create local job opportunities and a more prosperous community too. I have been the Member of Parliament for Rochford and Southend East for more than 15 years now. During this period, I have visited hundreds, if not thousands, of local firms and seen the fantastic services they provide to our community. Just recently, I visited the headquarters of Rossi Ice Cream. This local firm and local employer has transformed into a nationally recognised brand since it was first established back in 1932. 24

From their factory on the Temple Farm Industrial Estate, they are not only providing local businesses and restaurants with delicious ice cream, but firms across the country as well. As we look to build back better from Covid-19, I wish them, and all our local businesses, every success. Critical to saving lives Finally, I am once again running the London Marathon. This year, I will be raising money for two charities: the Southend Samaritans and the Rose Paterson Trust. Both do remarkable work on suicide prevention, and raising awareness, which is critical to saving lives.

If you can then on a separate piece of paper write down the things that can help you change that situation. On the ones you feel that you cannot change write an ‘A’ against it. Once you have completed your list notice all of those that are marked with an ‘A’ are similar although they are painful you are powerless to change them!

Acknowledge & Accept So one by one, acknowledge and that they are painful and ‘Accept ‘you are powerless to change them and just allow that feeling to go now., Notice the shift of emotion as it flows away from you. If you become stuck with any of your painful experiences, I can help you!
