o, ‘flaming June’...? If, as you read this, it is not totally tropical outside, you may be wondering where this expression comes from. After all, the weather in this month is generally cooler and wetter than July or August.
In fact, Flaming June is the title of Sir Frederic Leighton’s 1895 painting of a woman in an orange dress sleeping. At the time it was hugely popular but quite how the picture became the misleading catchphrase for June weather remains a mystery.
We should wear sunscreen But what it should do is remind you to reach for the sunscreen. Even if the British summer is prone to false starts, scientific advice recommends that we should wear sunscreen of at least SPF30 all year round. Skin-ageing UV rays don’t wait for temperatures to hit ‘scorchio’ or for you to jet off on your summer holiday.

Even if you’re not going to spend long periods of time outdoors, SPF moisturisers are a great way to look after your skin. I’d suggest you buy a moisturiser that offers you a minimum protection of SPF30 and feels like your regular day cream.
L’Oreal’s Classic Day Cream is excellent. Especially as you can buy it on the High Street for around £13 and it helps to hydrate, firm and reduce the appearance of wrinkles. If you want something a little more luxurious, Lancaster Sun Perfect Illuminating Cream (£31 on Amazon) provides high protection and a ‘natural glow booster’. What this actually means is that it contains light-reflecting particles which give you a certain shimmer. So, if your other half looks like they’ve rubbed glitter on their face one morning, you’ll definitely know they’ve been in your side of the bathroom cabinet.
