He was a devoted family man and a very hard-working local MP, who worked tirelessly for his constituents and the town and will be greatly missed. Sir David’s last article in September showed his passion for Southend to win City status. It might be surprising to know that around 80% of British homes have locks installed that are not up to insurance standards. Not only is this shocking, it’s highly likely that your Insurance Company will not pay out if you are indeed burgled (Ouch)! Another dreadful statistic is that a disturbing amount of people do not lock their doors properly, thinking that `pulling the door to’ is sufficient; this mentality has led to a marked increase in burglary across the country and is very easy to remedy if you simply deadlock your door.

If you’ve now installed your high security locks you’re probably feeling a little safer than before, but burglars can be somewhat determined so they’ll probably now ‘have a go’ at breaking a window to gain entry. Once they’re in they’ll generally not take long to grab any valuables that are laying around, which is why having a good quality safe is paramount. Most people think safes are only for jewellery, deeds, wills & large amounts of money & whilst this is true, you really need to secure the stuff that you might ordinarily leave lying around such as passports, driving licenses & credit cards to help protect against identity theft. Although it might be obvious, it’s important to lock up your vehicle keys too. A high percent of vehicle theft across the UK is primarily due to people not deadlocking their doors and the subsequent theft of car keys left either hanging up by the door or on the sideboard just inside the door.

$o, we’re getting there and Mr & Mrs burglar was indeed frightened off either by the dog or the alarm siren but there’s no evidence to prove who tried to break in, how they did it and when they did it, which is where the close circuit television (CCTV) comes in.

CCTV gives you added security, peace of mind & allows you to see what’s going on 24/7, 365 days of the year, and depending on the system you choose, allows you to see what’s going on anywhere in the world whenever you like. You can even get your alarm system to call you on your mobile phone to let you know the alarm has gone off and you can also ‘listen in’ to what’s going on in your house.

Laminated glass might seem a bit of overkill’ but it depends on the level of security that you’re after. It’ll certainly stop a quick smash and grab as laminated glass is harder to break. Alternatively, using various grades of protective film can make your glass anti bandit, anti-blast and even bullet resistant so you should be okay even if you get caught in the middle of a bandit gun fight, AWESOME!

And finally to make your place safer than safe you should consider installing grilles, bars or roller shutters to further safeguard your windows and doors. You know the ones, they’re the sort that we all see when we’re abroad, the ones that make your place pretty impregnable. So, now you know your ABC’ and all that remains is NOT to do the typical ‘Brit’ thing; to sit back and wait for something to happen, but to take the ‘bull by the horns’ & to do something about it before it’s too late.

7000 homes on the green belt?

F

irst and foremost I would like to pay tribute to Sir David Amess and his tragic and senseless loss of life. I would like to say my sincere condolences to his family. He helped so many people and supported so many organisations. He will be missed by all the people he helped and whose lives he touched. May he rest in peace.

For those who don't know me already, my name is Azeem Raja and for the past two local elections, I have stood as the Conservative Candidate to be your local Thorpe Ward Councillor. Unfortunately, on both occasions, I was unsuccessful.

However I refuse to give up on THORPE. My family live in Thorpe Bay, my children went to school in Thorpe Bay and now my grandchildren go to school in Thorpe Bay, and so my heart is in Thorpe Bay. Many of you will know, Thorpe Bay was once the envy of not just Southend but of the country as a whole. Our November 2021

pavements were pristine, our road signs clean, our grass verges maintained and the area felt safe.

However, over the past decade of independent representation, we have seen Thorpe Ward deteriorate. Thorpe Bay is simply not what it used to be.Too often promises have been broken

spaces, yet planned to build a cycle lane down the middle of Thorpe Hall Avenue, and are proposing to build 7000 homes on our local green belt.

This cannot continue to go on like this.

This is why, I am standing to be your Councillor for the third time, to once again make Thorpe Ward the best ward in the town, not the forgotten one.

The Thorpe Bay branch will close Many of you have contacted me in relation to the closure of Barclay's bank. As such, I want to be clear on my position. The closure of Barclays Bank marks the end of an era for the residents of Thorpe Bay. Before, Thorpe Bay residents and businesses had the luxury of three local banks, today that number is zero. This closure alienates those with mobility issues, those who are not technically able and those who want to do more than simply deposit and withdraw money.

It is a blow to Thorpe Bay residents and in my view is a mistake on the part of Barclays. I have worked hard to prevent this closure, including making representations to the Area Manager of Barclays. I have also worked with our Member of Parliament James Duddridge, to make representations at the highest levels of both Government and Barclays bank.

However, it seems their mind is made up. The Thorpe Bay branch will close.

But, alternatives exist and we don't need to look far to find them. Many of you may have seen the excellent new banking hub in Rochford sponsored by the post office. Here all banking services from all major banks live under one roof. The good news is, that the consortium of banks could soon be looking to expand this as a service to new locations and I believe Thorpe Bay is the perfect place to have one of them.

Green Belt by Bournes Green Chase

Consulting on the New local Plan Southend Council currently controlled by a Coalition of Labour/ Independent/Lib Dem Councillors are currently consulting on the New Local Plan. This plan includes the designation of the green belt north of Bournes Green Chase to allow the building of 7,000 homes. This is something that the Southend Conservatives oppose, due to the negative impact it will have on the residents we represent due to the pressure it would place on our local schools, local roads, GPs and Utilities. Currently there are no plans in place to improve the infrastructure to allow for these many houses. The current administration are saying this is because the Government has set them a target of 23000 houses. This is not a target but a starting point so that the council can set their own target.

We believe that this should not be included in the local plan and should not even be consulted on. The Government allows for green belts to be excluded from any local housing targets. . The council should first build on all brownfield sites in Southend of which there are many. Funding should be made available to improve our infrastructure and preserve our beautiful green belt because it is precious and once it is built on it will be lost forever.

We have had numerous correspondence from residents concerned about these plans. The Conservatives of Castle Point have already pushed back plans on the proposed development on their green belt. As such we are encouraging all residents to complete the Consultation which can be done at the following link: https://localplan.southend.gov.uk/

SIR DAVID AMESS, 1952-2021 Sir David was one of the nicest and most charming people you could ever meet, and the tributes since his death demonstrate how many lives he touched over nearly four decades representing the people of Essex. He died doing the job he loved, serving the people of Southend he cared so much for.

Sir David was Mr Southend! Never missing a moment or opportunity to showcase and secure investment in our City.

To lose a much loved colleague and respected Member of Parliament in the most tragic of circumstances has been extremely tough for everyone in the Southend Conservative family and for those constituents he served in decades of extraordinary public service.

Our loss though, of course, is nothing compared to that of his family who have been robbed of a husband and a father. Our hearts go out to Julia and his family.

Sir David was also one of the leading campaigners on animal welfare. In fact, these campaigns along with his catholic faith Sir David always defended the sanctity of life.

For believing and advocating in the sanctity of life, it truly rubs salt in the wounds that Sir David’s life was so cruelly, tragically and senselessly taken away.

The only solace we can take at this time is that Sir David died doing what he loved best – representing his constituents.

I have been asked countless times of what I remember Sir David for. There are two things for me.

Firstly was his legendary lateness for everything. This is because whoever he met en route to an engagement he would stop and talk to.

And secondly is his kindness. From right across the political spectrum it is the stories of Sir David’s kindness which have become the most apparent.

To give an example, when I became leader of the Conservative Group he sent me a personal message congratulating me on my appointment.

When I lost my seat in 2014 he sent me a personal message commiserating me on my defeat. That was the mark of the man. Sir David was championing causes and leading crusades before they were on

the public conscience. He was a brexiteer before the word was even invented. Back at the start of the millennium he was raising awareness of fuel poverty.

Way before Grenfell he was alerting us to the dangers of fire safety in tower blocks and following Grenfell campaigning passionately to have sprinkler systems retrospectively fitted

Lastly, we can not forget Sir David’s passion for Southend becoming a City. I would agree to Southend never becoming a City if we could have Sir David back but it is a fitting tribute none the less and I can’t thank the Prime Minister and Her Majesty the Queen enough for bestowing City status on Southend. This ensures that his legacy in Southend will forever live on.

I’m sure he is probably looking down on us right now saying that my work in Southend is now complete. Rest in Peace Sir David, Southend is a poorer place without you.

Sir David was a strong advocate, not only on his legendary parliamentary stance of Southend becoming a City but on the diversity of the town and the welcome it offers new residents, regardless of where they are from.

The work Sir David did for this City transcends all political belief. Yes he may have held different views, but that is called democracy. Those views were nurtured through his political ideology and convictions of his faith, no more.

Disagreement was met with a hot drink and discussion, the meeting may not end in agreement, but he would remain courteous throughout and listen to your point of view.

Southend will not be divided We have heard many stories from families he has helped. The Syrian family separated as refugees from their loved ones, reunited. There was the help he fought for on behalf of a family whose child was facing unthinkable challenges. He was one of the greatest constituency members of parliament the House of Commons has ever seen.

Following the intense tragedy of his murder a number of faith and community groups, across the town, worked together to show that Southend will not be divided through hatred and terror. So we commissioned local artist Karl Sims to produce an amazing piece of Street Art. The piece untitled Hands Together, Southend Against Hatred will be installed on Southend Seafront, on City Beach.

The heart of this new City The location opposite the water fountains is symbolic, situated within the sight of many of Southends Iconic landmarks, The Kursaal, Southend Pier, Adventure Island and the sea.

The hoardings themselves serve as a reminder of the passion shown by Sir David for Southend to become a City.

It is not a permanent memorial, indeed once the hoardings are removed we hope to see a new development rising from the ground, a new monument to a new city.

On Friday 12th November, between 10am -12.30 we will unveil the installation and ask representatives from groups, organisations and agencies across Southend to sign it.

The artwork represents our tolerance and unity across the community, which is at the heart of this new City.

Don't forget the children!

W

hen Wordsworth (1802) created the expression “Child is Father of the Man”, he was hinting that our Characteristics as Children stays with us in adult life.

Currently when children are growing up exposed to a hugely competitive social/ occupational/digital world, Parents do not want any correctable difficulties or perceived shortcomings affecting their future. Sadly, this increasing emphasis on Children’s Mental health and behaviour is grossly unmatched by current service provision.

On a broader view, the problems tend to

occur in terms of emotion(s), behaviour (including aggression) and relationship difficulties.

Academic progression is a major issue; and is sometimes associated with Developmental delay.

Obviously, many of the problems are mixed and therefore difficult to classify. There is also a current epidemic of both eating disorders and self-harm, which is probably accentuated by the ready opportunity available to young people to emulate each other’s rule breaking behaviour.

A key feature of Childhood mental health

is the relative reluctance of children themselves to seek outside scrutiny, which means that the perception and expectation of Parent(s) is a strong determinant towards help-seeking. Because of the relative lack of well trained and sensible therapists/ Psychologists the primary point of call may be the school teachers or GP, who are usually helpful, but do not have the specialist expertise needed for severe over activity, serious self-harm or significant eating disorder. For the self-reliant Parent, creating the required time and space to interact with the offspring is more useful than ordinarily recognised.

Parents must maintain a good degree of involvment Because of the rapid expansion of services, well meaning but inadequately experienced people can be employed as helpers, but parents must maintain a good degree of involvement with the whole process at every stage.

Change(s) in behaviour, downhill academic performance, avoidance of social situation(s), dislike for their usually enjoyable pursuits, sleep and eating difficulties – all can be indicative of anxiety and depression and can occasionally lead to self-harm. A good listening empathic Parent(s), can be very encouraging in making the child understand their feelings and deal with their own sense of hopelessness and helplessness.

A strong focus on the Child’s strength and personal qualities can be a very valuable resource towards recovery.

When seeing a psychiatrist, parents must be able to give a good history of the presenting issues, and might have to rely on the Judgement of the physician as to use of medication for further help. Medication is not always effective, but can sometimes dramatically change the scenario.

t’s a tradition that started back in November 2003, when a group of Australian friends came up with the idea of growing moustaches and raising money for charity.

Now, from its origins in an Adelaide pub Movember is a global phenomenon, promoting awareness of men's mental health, suicide prevention, and testicular and prostate cancer. The lockdowns may have been introduced to help the NHS cope in the height of the pandemic but they almost certainly contributed to a raft of new problems, with mental health and cancer diagnosis just two but very important issues. So, the coming winter could provide another crisis, which challenges the mental and physical wellbeing of not only men, but also their wives, sisters, mothers and friends.

Do something fun and easy That’s why I’d like everyone of you to support Movember in your own way.

From growing a mo’ to committing to walking or running 60km throughout November, for the 60 guys we lose every hour to suicide throughout the world. Alternatively, share a mo-ment and do something fun and easy with friends and family, or simply mo your own way and set yourself a challenge, whether it’s an epic test of endurance or overcoming your greatest fear.

RECIPE

Quick baked Portobello mushrooms with goat’s cheese

L

arge field mushrooms are perfect for stuffing. Lots of supermarkets sell the large Portobello mushrooms which are perfect. This recipe has just 4 ingredients and is really tasty. I serve it with griddled sour dough and salad for a light supper but its also great as a starter if you are entertaining.

You can buy various goat’s cheese and look out for the logs that can be easily cut.

Serves 2 as main, 4 as a starter

14 large field or portobello mushrooms 2 tbsp olive oil ½ jar of ready roasted peppers (the mixed colours in oil are lovely) 120g log of goat’s cheese cut into 4 rounds 2 tbsp pesto Salad leaves and griddled sour dough to serve

Heat the oven to 200c/fan 180/gas 6. Put the mushrooms on a baking tray, drizzle with the oil and season with plenty of black pepper.

Bake for 10 minutes until just starting to soften.

Remove from the oven and divide the peppers between the mushrooms. Top with a round of goat’s cheese and return to the oven for another 10 minutes or until the cheese has melted and turned slightly golden.

Drizzle over the pesto and serve with dressed leaves on the side and warm bread.

I think we can all agree that the sooner we see the back of 2020 and this dreadful corona virus the better. That said, there are also some heart warming positives that we can take out of this situation. It has often been said that we can only really get to know one another and realise what is truly important in times of crisis.
