Thames Sailing Barge Trust Exhibition in association with Southend Museums

Red Sails over the Estuary

I

t is difficult to find an historic postcard view of Southend beach without a Thames sailing barge appearing in it somewhere. This is not surprising since, between the late 1700s to the mid-1900s, more than 300 would have been owned in the vicinity, and numerous others from farther afield would have traded here.

Southend relied on the barges In the early days of the development of Southend and the surrounding area, farming was the principal occupation in the area, and before roads and railways were developed, movement of goods by sea was very important. The area was very productive for farming, and sailing barges provided transport for food and bedding for London horses and returned with manure for the fields.

Local tide mills at Rochford and Battlesbridge were important for milling the farm produce, and sailing barges were used to take the flour, hay and straw to market, returning with other cargoes.

Whilst farming would provide freights on a seasonal basis, local barge owners would be

able to carry other goods, and maintain the profitability of their craft. Some operators developed regular trips from Southend to London and other ports.

This was known as a “hoy” service and would carry any type of goods, and occasionally passengers as well, to a regular timetable.

Ideal for brick making The Thames sailing barge was ideally suited for trading to the area as its flatbottomed form allowed the barges to come as close as possible to the shore as the high tide would allow, and take to the ground as the tide receded. At low tide, cargoes could be loaded and unloaded over the side into a horse and cart.

There were not many wharfs in the area for loading and unloading, so being able to get as close as possible was a distinct advantage. The prospect of Southend pier being used for cargoes was an option early on, but objections to the tolls imposed led to 

use of local traders and the Gas Works.

Brickmaking developed in the area.

Local clay was found to be suitable for bricks, and brickfields were set up anywhere that clay was found. Workers moved into to the area, from Kent and Middlesex, and they moved around as different brickfields became worked out. The largest local brickfields were in Wakering.

Many smaller brickfields were worked from Wakering through to Stanford-le-Hope, and sailing barges were busy providing transport, being able to carry 40,000-50,000 bricks at a time. Brickmaking often used clinker residue from domestic grates, so a common return cargo to the brickfield was rubbish (otherwise known as ‘London mixture’). The clinker would be sorted from this, then and combustible material used for fuel, and the remains dumped. Where wharfs were available, these would be convenient for loading and unloading, but at Thorpe Bay, for example, the barges were loaded ‘over-side’ on the beach.

Sand from the Leigh was found to be of a suitable consistency to spread on the brick moulder’s table to prevent the newly moulded ‘green’ bricks sticking to it. Most of the brick companies used this sand, and a permit to load the sand into the barges had to be obtained from the owners of the foreshore, the Salvation Army, via the Port of London Authority.

Coal and coke were vital sources of fuel in the area, not only for industrial use – i.e. the Gas Works, and transport, but also for domestic use.

Sailing barges help develop Southend As Southend developed and expanded, building materials for houses, roads, sea walls and other infrastructure were required, and again trade by sailing barges was an efficient and economical means of supplying demand and getting goods to where they were required.

Barges were also used to supply other local communities with hoy services on a regular schedule, with local business men owning craft. Barges operated to and from Stanford-leHope, Pitsea, South Benfleet, Leigh, Shoebury, Wakering, Rochford, Burnham and Battlesbridge providing links with each other as well as to London, Maldon and other ports.

Red Sails over the Estuary The Thames Sailing Barge Trust in association with Southend Museum are holding an exhibition in the Priory Visitor Centre, Priory Park to tell the story of the iconic red sailed barges which were the cargo carriers of their day and their association with Southend. The exhibition tells how these vessels were built, operated and gives more detail on their links with Southend.

The exhibition will run from Wednesday 19th May to Sunday 15th August and be open from 11:00 – 16:00 on Wednesday to Sunday. Entrance is free and has been funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund as part of a project to restore the sailing barge Pudge, which is owned by the Thames Sailing Barge Trust, a registered charity.

RECIPE

Step one Heat the oil in a frying pan over a medium heat and fry the bacon for about 5 minutes until crispy, remove and drain on kitchen paper.

Warm Salmon with Asparagus, Bacon and a Tarragon Vinaigrette Serves 4 as a supper or lunch, 8 as a starter

Ingredients 1 tbsp olive oil rashers of smoked 4 back bacon cut into 2cm pieces salmon fillets with skin 4 (about 175g each) 00g small new 5 potatoes, washed and quartered 00g frozen peas or 3 petit pois 1 pkt of asparagus tips

his is an old recipe that I found in a magazine but keep coming back to when Spring comes around and I see English asparagus arrive in the shops. It is lovely as a lunch or supper with friends. Enjoy!

For vinaigrette rated zest and juice of G a lemon 5 tbsp extra virgin olive oil ½ tsp wholegrain 1 mustard 2 tsp honey tbsp chopped fresh 3 tarragon

Step two Cook the potatoes in boiling salted water for 15 minutes then add the peas for a further 5 minutes, check the potatoes are tender then add the asparagus tips for 2 minutes. Drain.

Step three Meanwhile, season the salmon and add to the pan, skin side down. Cook for 3-4 minutes or until the skin is crisp and golden. Turn the heat off, turn the salmon over and leave to cook in the residual heat until it is just opaque, cover with foil and set aside.

Step four Put all the ingredients for the vinaigrette in a screw top jar and give it a good shake, season with salt and pepper and a pinch of sugar if needed. (This will keep up to 3 days in the fridge).

Step five Spoon the potatoes, peas and asparagus onto plates and top with the bacon and fresh tarragon. Either place a whole salmon fillet on top or flake over the top.

Drizzle over the dressing.

any events have rocked stock markets over the past 25 years – the Dot-com bubble, global financial crisis, Brexit, and the Covid-19 pandemic, to name a few.

Despite this, holding cash would have left you in a far worse position in real terms than if you’d invested in the stock market. We’ve crunched the numbers to show the effect of investing £100 versus holding it as cash over a 25-year period. Read on to discover the results and what they mean for you.
