Southend included in City Status Bid!
P
arliament was due to return in September, but as a result of the crisis in Afghanistan Parliament was recalled. Having been a Member of Parliament when the original decision was made following 9/11 to get involved in Afghanistan, the way the allied troops have left the country has not played well. I and my team in Westminster are dealing with the many queries which have been raised by this event. The priorities are very much saving the lives of innocent civilians and animals while at the same time protecting our country from terrorist attacks.
and Paralympic Games I think that with all the circumstances our athletes did extremely well. We can be proud of them. Yes, it was a pity about the European Football Championship, but we do have the opportunity next year in Qatar - I am also the Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Qatar - to fly the flag again and perhaps bring home the trophy.
l Whilst the weather this summer hasn’t exactly been brilliant, I am very pleased that many traders have been able to open up again and that the leisure activities which Southend has to offer are once again being enjoyed by many people. l I am delighted to say that the local authority has given its blessing for the City Status bid and that a committee has been formed to develop ideas as to how we should approach our final submission which needs to be in by Christmas. I would be delighted to hear from any individuals or organisations with ideas and suggestions about the bid for City Status. l As Chairman of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for the Olympic 16
l It has been particularly satisfying to be out and about meeting people once again, for instance at Southend Hospital, not to mention the reopening of the wonderful Chalkwell Fair.

l I do wish everyone perhaps attending a new school for the first time or going onto university or higher education all the best, just as I do anyone starting out in the world of work for the first time.
