The response for this year’s photographic competition has been overwhelming. The standard of the entries was exceptional and Keith Hoskins and I found choosing the winners for each category extremely difficult. A big thank you to everyone who took part and remember to keep snapping for next year’s competition. This month is the 12th anniversary for Oracle and when I think back to its beginnings in a spare bedroom at our house in 2005, I realise how far it has come. A year ago, I launched its sister company, Oracle Creative Media Ltd as I felt there was a need for a local, transparent, web development company. This month I am also pleased to welcome, Francesca Wynne-Morgan who has now joined the family business to offer our clients her expertise in Marketing, Events and Social Media. Off the streets and into service First announced by the Conservative and Liberal Democrats coalition in 2010, the National Citizen Service (NCS) was launched with the aim of getting kids off the streets and preventing them from getting into gangs. Now, more than 275,000 young people have taken part in the scheme and that figure is rising fast. Expanding from its early focus on districts in London to areas such as Southend-on-Sea, NCS encourages teenagers away from unproductive and anti-social behaviour on the streets by teaching them life skills, then supports them in using those skills effectively to benefit their local communities. Not only that, but the experience, skills and motivation that the young people gain put them in a much stronger position when going to interviews and job opportunities and leaves them far better prepared for life in general.

The training takes place over one month. The first two weeks include a fun and exciting residential adventure week where participants get involved in indoor and outdoor activities and team building exercises. During the second week, practical, useful, workplace skills are taught within an actual University, along with some very valuable lessons on personal money management. After the two residential weeks, another two weeks is spent at a youth centre where participants choose a specific charity to help with their Social Action Plan. These projects often raise awareness for very important, worthwhile causes in much need of additional support.

NCS really is a once in a lifetime opportunity which gives young people the skills to build on and use throughout their entire lifetime. NCS develops personal, social, presentation, teambuilding, and problem solving skills. It is badly needed in many communities to teach and build confidence in young people – especially those that might, for many reasons, not have had the most advantageous start in life – and help them to contribute to their communities and lead constructive, productive lives.

Put your mind to it Our experience of Faith’s nan suffering from mental health issues inspired us to focus 6K’s (our NCS group) Social Action Plan on Rochford Mental Health Unit as we want to combat the stigma that often surrounds mental health and raise awareness and support so that other people might feel able to speak up if they are suffering and find the help they need. We also feel that this is particularly important so that young people are able to confront their issues. As part of our social action project, we are creating and giving care packages which include novelty items to aid young people who suffer from mental health issues and to normalise and raise awareness among those who don’t. We hope that our project results in the breakdown of the stigma that surrounds mental health and that we raise enough funds and awareness to make a big difference in the local community. We are showing that there is nothing to be afraid of – mental health issues are universal, and if units like this were better supported then we could help those in our community far more effectively.”

Beautifully sharp and just the right amount of the image in focus. I’m liking the colours – all about summer this one. It shows us all what is under our noses every day. Always keep a camera to hand! Buddhist Frog by Gemma Rogers (age 11) Wildlife under 18s Well done, Gemma! Your photography gets better every year and this is very cute too. Goldie Oldie by Lennie Warwick Architecture Winner Love this, an almost surreal look at a very well known landmark. Great use of late afternoon sun producing some lovely golden tones topped off by a sky that takes me back to summer picnics on the downs. The lesson to learn from this image is that the world around you isn’t just the bit you see when standing and looking straight in front of you!

Composition is good with everything falling on the ‘thirds’ and the eye is always drawn back to the main subject. I’d like to see the shots of the other colours of the water too.

Quick Beef Stroganoff

This is a bit of a cheat and if you haven’t had beef stroganoff for a few years (all the rage in the 70s/80s) then its time to give it another go. Once you have all your ingredients prepared it takes just 15 minutes to cook and you have a shortcut supper. It also works just as well with pork loin. Enjoy!

Method:

Ingredients (serves 4):

• 225g long-grain rice • 500g rump or sirloin steak, cut into thin strips • 1 tsp mixed peppercorns, crushed • 1 tbsp olive oil • 6 shallots, thinly sliced • 200g chestnut mushrooms, wiped and quartered • 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard • 100ml beef stock • 284ml carton of soured cream • 2 tsp paprika • Juice of half a lemon • Large handful of flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped

1. Cook the rice according to the instructions on the packet. Meanwhile, put the beef strips into a shallow dish, add the crushed peppercorns and toss to coat. Set aside. 2. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and cook the shallots for 3–4 minutes or until soft but not coloured. 3. Add the mushrooms and cook for a further 5 minutes. Increase the heat, add the beef strips and fry for 4–5 minutes or until the juices have evaporated and the meat is brown. Stir in the mustard and the stock, then bubble to deglaze the pan. 4. Stir in most of the soured cream and half of the paprika and gently heat until warmed through. Check the seasoning and add the lemon juice and a pinch of sugar if needed. 5. Spoon the beef stroganoff onto plates. Top with the remaining soured cream, sprinkle the remaining paprika and parsley over and serve with the rice. by Judy Barden

Shrimpers score a hat-trick

After missing out on the play-offs by a point last season, this summer’s transfer window has been more about keeping players than bringing them in for Southend United. The star man in midfield, Ryan Leonard, has generated interest from numerous championship clubs including Sheffield United and Milwall. However, manager Phil Brown has remained adamant that Ryan will stay and, with the window soon shutting, it looks like he will be keeping his word.

Moving forward Top scorer from last season, Simon Cox, and attacking left back Ben Coker have also been linked with moves away but both are now likely to stay. This has meant that Phil Brown has looked to add quality rather than quantity and has done so by bringing in a hat-trick of former Premier League players to the club.

Three points for a win Michael Turner has arrived from Norwich as a centre back with experience of playing regularly in the Premier League and Championship but, at 33 years old, injuries could be a problem and he already has one injury that has seen him miss the start of the season.

Stephen Hendrie, who was on loan with Southend last year, joined permanently from West Ham. He was brought in more as back up for Ben Coker but after the left back suffered a broken leg, Hendrie has become a firstchoice player. The biggest signing so far has been winger Michael Kightly. He has played regularly in the Premier League for Wolves, Stoke and most recently Burnley and, at 31, still has a couple of years left before retirement. If Michael can stay fit, his quality on the wing could make the difference. These three experienced signings, plus the youthful transfers of 26-year-old centre back Rob Kiernan and 19-year-old French striker Amadou Ba, strengthens an already impressive looking Southend side.

Reserves It has been a mixed start to the season though for the Shrimpers. On the opening day they defeated title favourites Blackburn Rovers at home 2–1, courtesy of goals from Ryan Leonard and new boy, Michael Kightly. However, this has been followed up by an early cup exit to lower division Newport and a 5–0 thumping defeat at Rotherham. Time will tell as to whether the quality can shine through and make a significant impact. by Andrew Strutt

They can manage your finances, or make decisions relating to your health and welfare. There are two types of LPAs:

Property and affairs LPA A property and affairs LPA covers decisions about your finances and property, including paying bills, collecting your income/benefits, or selling your house.

Health and welfare LPA A health and welfare LPA allows the attorney to make decisions on your behalf about your health and welfare, such as where you live and your day-today care, including your diet and what you wear. You can also give your attorney the power to accept or refuse life-sustaining treatment on your behalf.

Frequently asked questions I already have an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA), do I need to make an LPA as well? EPAs only cover decisions about finances and property, so some people who have a valid EPA

might also want to make a health and welfare LPA to cover decisions about their care or treatment. If I complete the forms now, does it mean that I will no longer be able to make decisions for myself? No. The purpose of the form is to allow people to make decisions for you in the future if you can no longer make them yourself. It does not mean that from the moment you complete the forms your attorney takes over making decisions for you. However, once registered at the Office of the Public Guardian, your property and affairs LPA can help you manage your finances, even if you are still able to deal with these things yourself. What happens if I don’t make an LPA? If you don’t make an LPA and later become unable to make certain decisions for yourself, there may be a time when no one can legally make decisions for you. This can make things difficult, such as paying bills or care costs, or making decisions about your future care and a deputy may need to be appointed. The process of beoming a deputy is a lot more time-consuming and expensive than a LPA, and involves ongoing tasks, so it is usually easier for someone to be an attorney.
