Outstanding efforts from Southend's Town Centre Team

Officers from Southend’s Town Centre Team have dedicated more than 6,000 hours to patrols and activity to deal with crime and anti-social behaviour over the last six months.

Expanding the team The team was expanded in July 2019 and have been working hard alongside their other Essex Police colleagues in Southend to keep the town a safe and welcoming place for residents, businesses and visitors. As well as dealing with prolific shoplifters and individuals who regularly commit anti-social behaviour, they also work closely with partner agencies to support vulnerable people who are sleeping rough on the streets or are at risk of exploitation by drugs gangs.

The Town Centre Team also works alongside specialist officers and staff from across the force to deter and deal with individuals who are involved in violent crime.

Operation Sceptre This day to day work under 'Operation Sceptre' includes gathering information to target offenders, extra patrols and using knife arches to detect weapons they might be hiding. Here’s a snapshot of the Town Centre Team’s work in December, which was a very busy time for the town centre in the run up to Christmas.

• 1,134 hours of patrols in the town centre. • Attended 72 incidents. • Issued two Community Protection Warnings for anti-social behaviour. February 2020

• Seized alcohol 15 times from individuals who were found breaching the public spaces protection order in place in the town centre. • Two knife arch operations to check for any hidden weapons – fortunately none were found. • High visibility patrols supported by Special Constables and partners including the British Transport Police. • Worked with Southend Borough Council and licensed premises including pubs, clubs and off-licences to ensure they were complying with the terms of their licenses.

“Can I afford to retire early?” This is one of the questions I am most commonly asked as a Financial Planner. Early retirement is generally seen as stopping work before the state pension age of 66 (rising to 67 later this decade). The key to early retirement is usually having healthy pension arrangements and some other savings to supplement these.

How much should you have put aside? The truth is there is no easy answer. Everyone’s requirements for how they spend their retirement will be different. Some can comfortably live on £12,000 a year, while others may require £30,000 to provide for various hobbies and exotic holidays. To add to the complexity, that income need often changes over time.

It’s difficult to quantify how many people are retiring early, but official statistics* suggest around 30% of people have stopped work before they hit the state pension age. So, taking early retirement is certainly an achievable goal with the correct planning. I often have Clients sitting opposite me who love the idea of early retirement (and could afford it too) but the decision to take the leap is overwhelming. One of my key questions to these Clients is ‘what are you retiring to?’ Having a clear vision of what you want to do in retirement is absolutely key, both for mindset and clear financial planning.

Of course, retiring early is not always a choice. Some are forced to stop work because of ill-health, redundancy or care demands. This is why it’s important to make a financial plan well ahead of time. In next month’s article I will provide my top financial tips for getting ready for retirement. Enjoy! (Serves 4)

Preheat oven to 200Â°C (180Â°C fan).

Looking after your body this Winter January and February are traditionally the harshest of the winter months, and the colder air outdoors can make your skin drier, while central heating at home and airconditioning in the office might also cause eczema. In those circumstances, the easiest thing to do is turn the thermostat down to between 16C-18C and, if you can, invest in a humidifier, which puts moisture back into the air. You might be surprised but one of the most important and commonly overlooked steps in the dry skin game is swapping to a seriously hydrating moisturizer. A cream rather than a lotion, especially one containing ceramides and hyaluronic acid, is ideal.

Change how you shower

Now, if you’re (still) committed to your New Year’s health kick, be mindful to avoid exposure to things that remove your skin’s natural oils. Hot water dries the skin. So, while the heat of a shower may feel AMAZING on a really nippy day, turn the temperature down a touch and don’t linger for longer than five minutes, as this only adds to surface dehydration. Also, ditch soap bars or harsh body washes in favour of something rich, creamy and gentle. Make sure that stepping out of the shower, you apply a good quality body moisturizer. Sweating also dries and irritates the skin. So, after a major workout in the gym, smashing your parkrun PB

or tough bike ride, change into something clean and dry as soon ASAP.

Tweak your diet Tweaking what you eat will also help. By this, I don’t mean extending Veganuary – but you can if you want – rather, adding the good fats contained in foods like walnuts, olive oil and avocados into your diet will definitely help. Similarly, coming out of Dry January with a vengeance won’t help matters either. Go steady on the booze and caffeine - found in regular tea, coffee and many ‘energy’ products. Water, and plenty of it, is key. Another rule of thumb to bear in mind, is that dry skin will stay dry without some light exfoliation. After all, once your skin is buffed and prepared, your choice of moisturiser can penetrate and begin to work its magic. An alcohol-free, antioxidant serum is great for year-round usage if you don’t want the faff of buying new winter moisturiser.

Continue your nightly routine Finally, don’t neglect your evening routine before bed. This will ensure healthy skin in the morning. In addition to putting on a little moisturizer or face serum, apply a gentle eye cream under your eyes and on the lids. Et voila, you won’t wake up looking like an Egyptian mummy!
