LSA - Update At London Southend Airport, we’ve come a long way in a short time. Since taking it over in 2008, Stobart Group has invested over £160 million in the new-look, modern and efficient facilities you see today. We’re now London’s fastest growing airport, just named ‘Best Airport in London’ for the fifth year running, with a customer satisfaction score of 84%. Of course, this recent growth doesn’t mean that we are a new airport. In fact, the story began in 1914 when the airfield was first established and continued through the 1960s heyday when Southend was the UK’s third busiest airport with Sir Freddie Laker basing his famous Skytrain service here. But a lack of investment and support in the 1970s saw the airport decline into something of an aviation backwater. It is important that this does not happen again. The airport needs to continue to grow, to attract even more investment and to employ even more local people, offering them exciting and rewarding careers, whilst supporting our communities in other ways, through our sponsorship and charitable activities. Today, London Southend Airport makes a significant contribution to the local and regional economy, supporting employment for over 1000 people, with 84% of those directly employed by Stobart Aviation living in the SS postcode area. We know that number will grow as the airport develops and analysis carried out for us by Optimal Economics shows that our airport is capable of adding an additional 5,000 jobs over the next ten years. Signifticant Investment At the same time, we understand that our success relies first and foremost upon the support of the local community, and it is important that we work together and listen to one another in order to continue to deliver an airport that works for everyone, as far as it possibly can. For that reason, we report to, and consult with, residents and other stakeholders, via the Airport Consultative Committee, on a regular basis. In part as a result of that consultation, we have put a range of measures in place to ensure that noise levels and wider environmental impacts are responsibly managed. Air quality measured around the airport perimeter continues to be well below Government-set targets and the runway extension has allowed us to operate passenger aircraft which are much quieter and more fuel efficient than some of the older aircraft that previously used the airport for routine maintenance. More than 22% of our electricity comes from renewable sources, largely thanks to our onsite solar farm.

These are exciting times for London Southend Airport, and for the community around us. The project to extend the Terminal to ensure we have the capacity to continue providing marketleading levels of customer satisfaction as we grow is well underway and The Restaurant Group has taken over our catering operation and is introducing six new, High Street brands. We’ve started new Air Malta services to Malta, Cagliari and Catania, easyJet have added a 4th based aircraft and, of course, the year’s biggest news was the announcement from Ryanair that we will become their 14th UK base. They will base three aircraft with us from summer 2019 and will operate 60 flights per week to 13 destinations, creating 750 new jobs. We have always fully complied with the agreements made between us and our planning authorities that were put in place when the airport was granted planning permission to redevelop. This includes our obligations regarding night flights. There has been some recent debate around this subject, so it is important to clarify there is no night “curfew”. Instead, there is a ban on scheduling flights after 2330 and a permitted night quota of 120 movements per month during the night period. The airport has never scheduled services after 2330 and has always operated well within the overall night quota.

In doing so, we remain mindful of our obligations to, and our reliance on, our neighbours. The Demise of Southend The general demise of Southend – ‘Dire Street’ as I now call Southend High Street, can be traced back to neglect by Councils over the years. My Dad always said, ‘there is nothing that’s been done that can’t be undone’. With regard to our High Street, the situation is so ‘dire’ I feel it is a case of acting now before it’s too late! It’s very easy to blame Amazon, out of town shopping centres and suchlike. Why are some High Streets doing well, for example Rayleigh, Chelmsford and others struggle? The successful ones are doing something right.

What can be done?

Improve ambience Better events are needed that actually make sense to all businesses around the town including the hotel trade. Improve the layout and general look by creating green spaces, which in turn will create ambience, which in turn creates takings. Find a way to keep Marks & Spencers in the town. There are a thousand and one things that could be done to save the High Street; I don’t have the monopoly on good ideas but something radical needs to be done now!

What can be done is the question? Simple, put a team together who have a can do attitude and who have a vested interest in the town’s revival/success. For starters, do the easy quick wins now, accept that we are in the age of the motor car and encourage them. Make all side roads off the High St from Queens road to Royal Terrace ‘free’ parking for two hours. They do this in Leigh and it appears to be doing well. Open up sections of the High Street to cars, to improve the traffic flow and create extra ‘free’ parking, this would generate extra security. Take out all needless double yellow lines and add to the ‘free’ parking stock. After all, most of these yellow lines are just there to feed traffic wardens targets!

The Pier, the Beach, the Seafront in general, coupled with my own attractions, Sealife Adventure and Adventure Island should be recognised as major draws to the High Street and supported as such.

High profile policing is desperately needed! Budget constraints will be thrown up, but seeing the town in its present state, can we afford not to? It’s verging on anarchy at times and the baddies are not stupid, they have eyes.

We need to question the wisdom of withdrawing the visible police presence from our streets and remember that neighbourhood police officers keep people safe and deter criminals.

But this is a short-term fix which cannot solve the long-term problems, proving beyond doubt that more police officers are permanently required.

In August, the High Street pharmacy chain Superdrug caused a sensation when it announced that it would be offering anti-wrinkle and skin rejuvenation treatments at its store on London’s Strand. Ultimately, the retailer plans to make Botox and dermal fillers available in its stores throughout the UK. Apparently, they came up with the concept of its Skin Renew Service, after the enormous popularity of Love Island sparked huge demand for cosmetic procedures, with Southend’s own contestant Megan Barton-Hanson, comparing cosmetic surgery to ‘getting your hair done’. When I read that, naturally, my interest was piqued.

Cosmetic surgery safe? It got me thinking about these type of cosmetic procedures – are they safe and a good idea in general? I’ve done a little research and, while I’m no expert, I’ll share with you what I’ve discovered. First, what are dermal fillers? They’re small injections of gel, usually containing hylauronic acid, that fill in wrinkles and add volume to soft tissue around the faces, such as eyes, cheeks, mouth and jawline. Lip fillers are administered directly into the lip tissue. So, the headline here is that fillers smooth deepset lines. This treatment is popular with women approaching, or already in their 30’s and 40’s, as our bodies begin to stop producing collagen and elastin from around the age of 25. These then decline at a rate of approximately 2% per year.

One treatment will generally last between six to 18 months, depending on how your body reacts and which hyaluronic acid is used. Now, I can guess you have two further questions – I know I did. One, do they hurt and two, are there any side-effects? I would say that, like any procedure involving a needle, there is going to be some discomfort. However, an anaesthetic cream applied before the treatment should minimise this. In some cases, clinics use a pre-mixed local anaesthetic to further reduce any pain.

Some discomfort After a treatment, it is normal to experience swelling, redness and tenderness. Bruising around the area where you’ve had the filler applied can also occur. Whilst this may sound somewhat worrying, these reactions are generally mild to moderate and typically disappear shortly after injection and are, in most cases, resolved a few days after the injection into the skin. Now, there is a difference between Botox and dermal fillers. Botox stops the small muscles in your face from making the movements that cause wrinkles, whilst dermal fillers plump from below the wrinkle to smooth them out and promote the youthful look. Also, depending on what you decide to have done, what fillers you choose to use and who you entrust to administer them, affects the price. Coq au Chardonnay

A twist on the classic using white wine instead of red. With Autumn on the way it is time to think about casseroles and comfort food, which I love especially with buttery mashed potato. Ingredients: 6 chicken breasts on the bone, or a mixture of 6 chicken thighs and 3 breasts 2tbsp plain flour, seasoned 25g unsalted butter 2tbsp olive oil 225g smoked streaky bacon, finely diced 18 small shallots, peeled 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 225g small chestnut mushrooms 600ml Chardonnay 300ml fresh chicken stock 4 large sprigs thyme 2 bay leaves 2-3tbsp creme fraiche Cornflour to thicken, if needed 1-2tbsp finely chopped fresh parsley Method: Preheat the oven to 180C, gas 4. Lightly dust the chicken with seasoned flour, shaking off any excess. Heat the oil and butter in a large frying pan and when itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s really hot, fry the chicken pieces in 2-3

batches, ensuring they are browned on both sides. Place the chicken in the casserole dish. Brown the bacon in the same pan, then add to the casserole. Brown the shallots in the remaining oil, add the garlic, then tip into the casserole. Brown the chestnut mushrooms, but keep aside as these will be added to the casserole later. Pour off any oil that remains in the frying pan, return to the heat and add the Chardonnay and chicken stock. Bring to the boil, scraping up any bits from the bottom, then add to the chicken. Add the thyme and bay leaves to the casserole, put a lid on, place in the oven and cook for 45 minutes. Add the chestnut mushrooms and return to the oven for a further 15 minutes. At the end of this time, take the casserole out of the oven and transfer the chicken, shallots, bacon and mushrooms to a warmed serving dish. Discard the thyme and bay leaves. Place the casserole over a direct heat and whisk in the creme fraiche, season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Check the consistency and if it is too runny, mix 1 tbsp cornflour with a little cold water and whisk into the sauce, bring to the boil whisking until it thickens. Pour the sauce over the chicken and sprinkle with the chopped parsley. Serve with creamy mashed potatoes and vegetables of your choice.

Our excellent examination results Students at Shoeburyness High School have achieved their best ever results at GCSE which promises further records at A level in the future. During a period of major changes, including the eradication of coursework in favour of 100% examination courses and the new grading systems of 9-1 instead of A*-G, our students achieved outstanding results! We have an increased pass rate for A Level at 98% and over 99% pass rate in Vocational qualifications, with an average C 56

grade per entry for A level or equivalent. What is even more notable is studentsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; achievement at the very highest grades, 26% of our A level grades were A*- B, also during a time of major changes in Post-16 courses, with many of the results coming from brand new qualifications. There were brilliant successes in individual departments too. Art and Textiles both enjoyed an amazing 100% A*-C grade at A-level, and in vocational subjects, ICT achieved an outstanding 92% pass rate at Distinction*Merit, with Performing Arts posting an impressive 89% and Sport posting 83% in the same measure. Achievement in our facilitating subjects (those preferred by the Russell Group Universities) was also commendable, with English Literature, Maths, History and Geography all achieving a 100% pass rate!

Our university success We continue to send more and more successful applicants to university every year. This year, nearly half of our previous Year 13 students will be starting degrees in universities across the country, including the study of Fine Arts at Brighton, Medicine at Bristol and Biomedicine at the UEA. We give carefully focussed advice and coaching to students, guiding them through the UCAS application process, providing workshops in CV and reference writing and even funding their applications too.

Here at Shoeburyness High School our Year 12 and 13 students enjoy the best study facilities and largest exclusive areas in the school in which to work. Computer suites dedicated to Sixth Form students are available throughout the day, as are our excellent canteen facilities and fitness suite in our local leisure centre.

Our extensive choice We currently have 22 A levels and 12 Vocational level 3 courses to choose from in our Sixth Form programmes of study at Shoeburyness High School. We also lead the way in Sports Academies in both Basketball and Football, with professional coaching and national competitions. There really is something for everyone and, if you haven’t quite managed to achieve that grade 4 in English or Maths GCSE, we also offer the opportunity to study for these, alongside your other choices. We support our students with their courses by offering practical advice and techniques to enhance their learning and promote their independence. We also forge links with the workplatce and universities in order to provide students with clear steps to take towards their futures, whether in higher education or employment.
