ORACLE
WELCOME
The response for this year’s photographic competition has been overwhelming. The standard of the entries was exceptional and Keith Hoskins and I found choosing the winners for each category extremely difficult. See page 32 to view the winners and Keith’s critique on each one and visit our website to see the rest of the best – you won’t be disappointed! A big thank you to everyone who took part and remember to keep snapping for next year’s competition. This month is the 12th anniversary for Oracle and when I think back to its beginnings in a spare bedroom at our house in 2005, I realise how far it has come. A year ago, I launched its sister company, Oracle Creative Media Ltd as I felt there was a need for a local, transparent, web development company. This month I am also pleased to welcome, Francesca Wynne-Morgan who has now joined the family business to offer our clients her expertise in Marketing, Events and Social Media. Whether you’re an ancient groover or not, this month’s competition will interest you! Following their sellout 2016 tour, The Musical Box is back in the UK to perform The Black Show – internationally acclaimed for its historical re-enactment of early Genesis’ work – at the Cliffs Pavilion, Monday 16th October at 7pm. Visit: southendtheatres.org.uk for more details. To enter, please send in your name and contact details to: Oracle/Musical Box Competition, Oracle House, 11 Clarence Road, Southend SS1 1AN or email: info@oraclepublications.co.uk by the 29th September. To win more tickets for other shows, please follow us on social media. Good luck!

LOCAL ISSUES
Off the streets and into service First announced by the Conservative and Liberal Democrats coalition in 2010, the National Citizen Service (NCS) was launched with the aim of getting kids off the streets and preventing them from getting into gangs. Now, more than 275,000 young people have taken part in the scheme and that figure is rising fast. Expanding from its early focus on districts in London to areas such as Southend-on-Sea, NCS encourages teenagers away from unproductive and anti-social behaviour on the streets by teaching them life skills, then supports them in using those skills effectively to benefit their local communities. Not only that, but the experience, skills and motivation that the young people gain put them in a much stronger position when going to interviews and job opportunities and leaves them far better prepared for life in general.
Put your money where your mouth is “I chose to sign up for NCS because I believed it would be an excellent experience rather than spending most of my summer holidays at home. Also so I could have the chance to make a difference in the community.” – Cheyenne Spearman
The training takes place over one month. The first two weeks include a fun and exciting residential adventure week where participants get involved in indoor and outdoor activities and team building exercises. During the second week, practical, useful, workplace skills are taught within an actual University, along with some very valuable lessons on personal money management. After the two residential weeks, another two weeks is spent at a youth centre where participants choose a specific charity to help with their Social Action Plan. These projects often raise awareness for very important, worthwhile causes in much need of additional support.
September 2017 www.oraclepublications.co.uk
9
NCS really is a once in a lifetime opportunity which gives young people the skills to build on and use throughout their entire lifetime. NCS develops personal, social, presentation, teambuilding, and problem solving skills. It is badly needed in many communities to teach and build confidence in young people – especially those that might, for many reasons, not have had the most advantageous start in life – and help them to contribute to their communities and lead constructive, productive lives.
Put your mind to it Our experience of Faith’s nan suffering from mental health issues inspired us to focus 6K’s (our NCS group) Social Action Plan on Rochford Mental Health Unit as we want to combat the stigma that often surrounds mental health and raise awareness and support so that other people might feel able to speak up if they are suffering and find the help they need. We also feel that this is particularly important so that young people are able to confront their issues. As part of our social action project, we are creating and giving care packages which include novelty items to aid young people who suffer from mental health issues and to normalise and raise awareness among those who don’t. We hope that our project results in the breakdown of the stigma that surrounds mental health and that we raise enough funds and awareness to make a big difference in the local community. We are showing that there is nothing to be afraid of – mental health issues are universal, and if units like this were better supported then we could help those in our community far more effectively.”
Put a smile on your face “I decided to be a part of the NCS summer project because I wanted to make new friends and make a difference.” – Emma Orchard On a personal level, it is knowing that we have, and are continuing to make a positive difference in other people’s lives that we have found the most rewarding, and we wholeheartedly recommend NCS to anyone thinking of taking part – you can make a difference too! If you know of any young people who need to be pushed out of their comfort zones or would like more information on the National Citizen Service then please visit: www.ncsyes.co.uk by Faith Bater & Cheyenne Spearman NCS Graduates
www.ncsyes.co.uk
Put into action “I decided to take part in NCS because it offered something that I couldn’t get anywhere else, and that was the ability to grow and practice my skills that I would need in the future, skills that I couldn’t be taught at school.” – Faith Bater At the end of the NCS summer project there is a graduation ceremony to celebrate everyone’s achievements and present them with their certificates. These make a great addition to any CV for those wishing to impress potential future employers.

Barnet fare – food for your hair
It’s not all about shampoos, conditioners, serums and treatments – if you want a healthy and glossy head of hair, it’s the kit in your kitchen that really matters! The protein found in poultry, such as chicken and turkey, strengthens the hair and increases the presence of iron, which promotes hair growth. Salmon is a terrific source of Omega 3 fatty acids, which help to open the hair follicles and promote healthy hair growth. A lack of Omega 3 can lead to a dry scalp and dull looking hair.
Hair in a can Beloved of Popeye, spinach won’t just put hairs on your chest – it contains vitamins B, C and E as well as potassium, calcium, iron, magnesium and Omega 3, all of which are needed to keep your mop shipshape and Bristol fashion. The iron content in particular helps the red blood cells carry oxygen to your hair follicles – essential for healthy hair growth. The staple of students for decades, lentils have fallen off the superfood radar in recent years. However, they’re cheap and a good source of zinc and biotin, which help to maintain your hair’s health. Lentils are also packed with protein, which
strengthens your hair strands. Try adding lentils to salads and soups for a healthy addition to your diet. Sweet potatoes are a tasty alternative to traditional spuds and are brimful of beta-carotene, which the body converts into Vitamin A. And you can bet your sweet patootie that an extra hit of Vitamin A will help keep the dandruff at bay! Similarly, carrots help you to achieve a shiny well-conditioned look by maintaining the natural oils in your hair. If you’re feeling flush, oysters are another wonderful source of zinc. Zinc is an important antioxidant for the body and helps with hair growth as it helps keep the oil glands at the scalp at a healthy level.
A Delia do The humble egg is rich in biotin and Vitamin B which help keep your scalp and hair sunny-side up. Walnuts contain biotin and a host of other nutrients. The biotin helps strengthen hair, reduce hair loss and improves growth. Walnuts are also a good source of vitamin E. Vitamin E deficiency can lead to brittle hair which easily breaks off or snaps, so use your nut and crack some out for a healthy snack.

Fings ain’t wot they used to be! “It used to be fun – Dad an’ old Mum, paddling down Southend. But now it ain’t done. Never mind, chum – Paris is where we spend our outin’s.” Ah, Max Bygraves taking us back to the Fifties! Even in those dark days of austerity we were aspirational – things could only get better! And indeed they did, for the parents of the Baby Boomers, compared with how they were brought up before and during WW2. But it’s not how I remember it. Brown sauce sand wiches, sugar buppies, Camp coffee, welfare orange juice, daily spoonful of malt, freezing cold lino, outside lavs, ice inside of windows, coal fires (when you could afford it) that burnt your front and froze your back! That’s what I remember. The good old days, when we had nothing – which so many hark back on with affection. When we could leave our front doors unlocked and not worry about burglars – that’s because we had nothing worth burgling!
Time’s a changin’ Lionel Bart caught the spirit of the times with his lyrics but not the future affluence – universal education and medical care, haute cuisine on the dinner table, food aplenty and affordable, designer
clothes for the masses, 2, 3 or 4-car families and home ownership for most. All attainable for a generation that grasped the opportunity. But what of those Boomers, now in their 60s and 70s, surviving on a depleted pension, mortgaged and in debt to credit cards? Will they be as stoic as their parents? Will they suffer the cold days of winter, turning down the bars on the electric fire, terrified of the bill? Will they make do on bread and dripping, instead of prawn cocktail? I doubt it, unless forced to – they’re used to better fings! Central heating, double glazing, bathrooms, fitted kitchens, holidays abroad, cars, eating out – all the things that Baby Boomers worked for and have come to expect as their right! But there is a choice – they can access the cash locked in their homes with a suitable Equity Release Scheme, using their property to maintain the lifestyle they have become used to. And why not? We’re only here once! Equity Release Schemes don’t suit everybody and you need expert independent advice as to the best way forward, but if you need to raise money, for any reason, it’s worth finding out about. If you would like to discover more, feel free to call for a quick chat. by Ron Radway, Financial Consultant

Shrimpers score a hat-trick
SPORT
After missing out on the play-offs by a point last season, this summer’s transfer window has been more about keeping players than bringing them in for Southend United. The star man in midfield, Ryan Leonard, has generated interest from numerous championship clubs including Sheffield United and Milwall. However, manager Phil Brown has remained adamant that Ryan will stay and, with the window soon shutting, it looks like he will be keeping his word.
Moving forward Top scorer from last season, Simon Cox, and attacking left back Ben Coker have also been linked with moves away but both are now likely to stay. This has meant that Phil Brown has looked to add quality rather than quantity and has done so by bringing in a hat-trick of former Premier League players to the club.
Three points for a win Michael Turner has arrived from Norwich as a centre back with experience of playing regularly in the Premier League and Championship but, at 33 years old, injuries could be a problem and he already has one injury that has seen him miss the start of the season.
26
Stephen Hendrie, who was on loan with Southend last year, joined permanently from West Ham. He was brought in more as back up for Ben Coker but after the left back suffered a broken leg, Hendrie has become a firstchoice player. The biggest signing so far has been winger Michael Kightly. He has played regularly in the Premier League for Wolves, Stoke and most recently Burnley and, at 31, still has a couple of years left before retirement. If Michael can stay fit, his quality on the wing could make the difference. These three experienced signings, plus the youthful transfers of 26-year-old centre back Rob Kiernan and 19-year-old French striker Amadou Ba, strengthens an already impressive looking Southend side.
Reserves It has been a mixed start to the season though for the Shrimpers. On the opening day they defeated title favourites Blackburn Rovers at home 2–1, courtesy of goals from Ryan Leonard and new boy, Michael Kightly. However, this has been followed up by an early cup exit to lower division Newport and a 5–0 thumping defeat at Rotherham. Time will tell as to whether the quality can shine through and make a significant impact. by Andrew Strutt

Photographic Competition Winners 2017
SPOTLIGHT
The Oracle Photographic Competition 2017 is over and the standard of this year’s entries has been even more amazing than last year! Expert adjudicator, Keith Hoskins of Picture Perfect photographic studio, offers feedback on his chosen few … The Race is On! by Frances Beckerman Wildlife Winner ‘The race is on’ is just what I thought before seeing the title! Beautifully sharp and just the right amount of the image in focus. I’m liking the colours – all about summer this one. It shows us all what is under our noses every day. Always keep a camera to hand! Buddhist Frog by Gemma Rogers (age 11) Wildlife under 18s Well done, Gemma! Your photography gets better every year and this is very cute too. I particularly like your putting together of the textures of the frog on the stone statue. All nice and sharp. Did you take any other angles I wonder? Southend Conservation Area by Hilary Painter Architecture Commended
Wildlife & Wild Life by Mark Prior Wildlife Commended So well captured, and kind of the birds to be flying in a formation of three! Just a small bug bear of mine is that I do like to see the water horizon level.
32
‘Genteel’ is the word that came to mind when first seeing this image. Showing something of the conservation area in its surrounding environment.

Goldie Oldie by Lennie Warwick Architecture Winner Love this, an almost surreal look at a very well known landmark. Great use of late afternoon sun producing some lovely golden tones topped off by a sky that takes me back to summer picnics on the downs. The lesson to learn from this image is that the world around you isn’t just the bit you see when standing and looking straight in front of you!
Winter Café by Frances Beckerman Architecture Commended From old to new, this photo gives us a look at the changing face of Southend seafront. Composition is good with everything falling on the ‘thirds’ and the eye is always drawn back to the main subject. I’d like to see the shots of the other colours of the water too.
Autumn Sunlight on Hadleigh Downs by Terry O’Connor Landscape Commended One of the best renditions of this scene. Accomplished initial photography (including the cyclist, by the way) and great postproduction to lighten shadows and enhance the whole photo. Good Job! Cliffs by Kim Tobin Landscape Winner
The Past and the Present by Emily Rajah (age 15) Landscape under 18s
Wow! I just want to walk into the frame and sit down. So warm and welcoming with rich colours and lots to see, always bringing me back to ‘take a seat’. I’d love to have been there with a bride and groom to photograph too.
Another one where I knew what the photography was giving me as soon as I saw the photo. The framing? I love the Palace being on an angle and that the walkway is so dominant in the photo, a most overpowering presence and portent of things to come? Well done and thank you to everyone who took part in this year’s competition – the standard of all of the entries really was incredible! FOOD
Quick Beef Stroganoff
This is a bit of a cheat and if you haven’t had beef stroganoff for a few years (all the rage in the 70s/80s) then its time to give it another go. Once you have all your ingredients prepared it takes just 15 minutes to cook and you have a shortcut supper. It also works just as well with pork loin. Enjoy!
Method:
Ingredients (serves 4):
• 225g long-grain rice • 500g rump or sirloin steak, cut into thin strips • 1 tsp mixed peppercorns, crushed • 1 tbsp olive oil • 6 shallots, thinly sliced • 200g chestnut mushrooms, wiped and quartered • 1 tbsp wholegrain mustard • 100ml beef stock • 284ml carton of soured cream • 2 tsp paprika • Juice of half a lemon • Large handful of flat-leaf parsley, finely chopped
ORACLE estate planning
In association with Countrywide SE LLP 36
1. Cook the rice according to the instructions on the packet. Meanwhile, put the beef strips into a shallow dish, add the crushed peppercorns and toss to coat. Set aside. 2. Heat the olive oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat and cook the shallots for 3–4 minutes or until soft but not coloured. 3. Add the mushrooms and cook for a further 5 minutes. Increase the heat, add the beef strips and fry for 4–5 minutes or until the juices have evaporated and the meat is brown. Stir in the mustard and the stock, then bubble to deglaze the pan. 4. Stir in most of the soured cream and half of the paprika and gently heat until warmed through. Check the seasoning and add the lemon juice and a pinch of sugar if needed. 5. Spoon the beef stroganoff onto plates. Top with the remaining soured cream, sprinkle the remaining paprika and parsley over and serve with the rice. by Judy Barden

More power to you Many people with dementia will reach a point where they are no longer able to make decisions for themselves – this is known as lacking ‘mental capacity’. When this happens, someone else will need to make decisions on their behalf. A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal tool that gives another adult the legal authority to make certain decisions for you. The person who is given this authority is known as an ‘attorney’. They can manage your finances, or make decisions relating to your health and welfare. There are two types of LPAs:
Property and affairs LPA A property and affairs LPA covers decisions about your finances and property, including paying bills, collecting your income/benefits, or selling your house.
Health and welfare LPA A health and welfare LPA allows the attorney to make decisions on your behalf about your health and welfare, such as where you live and your day-today care, including your diet and what you wear. You can also give your attorney the power to accept or refuse life-sustaining treatment on your behalf.
Frequently asked questions I already have an Enduring Power of Attorney (EPA), do I need to make an LPA as well? EPAs only cover decisions about finances and property, so some people who have a valid EPA
might also want to make a health and welfare LPA to cover decisions about their care or treatment. If I complete the forms now, does it mean that I will no longer be able to make decisions for myself? No. The purpose of the form is to allow people to make decisions for you in the future if you can no longer make them yourself. It does not mean that from the moment you complete the forms your attorney takes over making decisions for you. However, once registered at the Office of the Public Guardian, your property and affairs LPA can help you manage your finances, even if you are still able to deal with these things yourself. What happens if I don’t make an LPA? If you don’t make an LPA and later become unable to make certain decisions for yourself, there may be a time when no one can legally make decisions for you. This can make things difficult, such as paying bills or care costs, or making decisions about your future care and a deputy may need to be appointed. The process of beoming a deputy is a lot more time-consuming and expensive than a LPA, and involves ongoing tasks, so it is usually easier for someone to be an attorney. SECAT – putting our heads together Last year we announced the formation of the Southend East Community Academy Trust (SECAT) – a multi-academy trust committed to delivering an outstanding education for its local community. Championing the ethos of: “Strong Partnerships, Strong Community, Strong Schools”, the founder members were:
• Shoeburyness High School • Thorpedene Primary School • Hinguar Community Primary School and Nursery • Bournes Green Infant School We have now been joined by:
• Bournes Green Junior School • Richmond Primary School We are delighted to welcome them into SECAT and look forward to our continued success together.
Joined-up thinking The addition of Bournes Green Junior School and Richmond Primary School means that nearly all the local schools are working collaboratively. This provides a huge wealth of experience, skills and resources to take our educational community forward. Dr Tim Coulson, the Regional Schools’ Commissioner said of the trust: “It had developed an effective structure and culture since it was established, building on the positive relationships developed when the schools were part of the Shoeburyness Educational Partnership”.
Group effort This year the schools have set up Curriculum Strategy Groups led by the Headteachers of the partner schools. English and Maths led by Miss Walsh, Early Years by Mrs Sheern, Assessment by Mrs Stevens and Teaching and Learning by Mrs Costello. These groups were praised in Dr Coulson’s
48

report saying it “resulted in a cross fertilisation of ideas, a consistency in theory and approach and the development of common procedures. SECAT have also established sub-groups for attendance, safeguarding and special educational needs.
Share the wealth As well as educational joint working, the schools in SECAT have shared expertise and resources from outside the classroom. Support with building work, ICT and office support have already taken place between the academies. Savings have been made on the contracts that we have entered into which has, in turn, allowed us to invest more into the education of our students.
A bright future together This is just the start. The SECAT schools are already looking at gaining the Primary Science Quality Mark, developing an extended AMA (Academically More
Able) programme and expanding arts and music provision. These are exciting times for this area and there is no doubt that the six schools, hundreds of staff and thousands of young people and their parents working together will bring even more success, building a brighter future for us all.
