ORACLE

WELCOME

Great news regarding the petition for free parking on Southend High Street’s side roads to help increase footfall, to support local traders. It looks like the new Council administration are listening and want to engage. Special thanks to Josie Hewitt, local resident, who has spent a considerable amount of her spare time gathering signatures for this worthwhile petition. Let’s hope this small step in the right direction, will be the beginning of our High Streets much needed rejuvenation. Read Josie’s article on page 16.

Leigh's new gem While the tranquility and rustic charm of Leighon-Sea remains, the last ten years have seen a vast transformation in the culinary delights, barista bars and boutiques in the area, breathing new life into the Broadway and with it a certain ‘lifestyle’. As independents have grown in creativity and confidence, residents and visitors have come to expect more choice and individuality, with a superior level of personal service to match. Continuing to raise the bar within this thriving community, is recent newcomer Piece Gallery, making its much anticipated arrival in May.

learned his craft, sketching tourists by day on the banks of Amsterdam and playing conga clubs by night.

Brushed concrete walls, clean lines and elegant lighting instantly bring an atmosphere of calm and reflection to this stunning space, mirroring that of a high end Mayfair gallery. It is clear that attention to detail and ensuring the customer, ‘an experience’, was not lost on collectors and entrepreneurs, Grant and Stacey Fernley, founders of the gallery. But what sets Piece apart from other galleries however, is the warm welcome that greets you at the door. Staff are informed and accommodating, but whether you are searching for inspiration, a new addition to your home or simply having a post brunch browse, the vibe is extremely relaxed and friendly.

If investing in young and emerging talents appeal, the fresh works of Ed Waites, a rising star, who at just 30 years old, captures the very essence and energy of thriving cities such as London, Paris and New York, with a signature style that sings from the canvas. Also on the rise, Emily Crook’s work spans generations with cartoon icons we know and love, generating pieces that cannot fail to bring a smile to your face. And if old school grafitti is more up your street, Graffiti king, Opake One, may be your artist of choice, with vibrant, old school originals.

An eclectic mix of art

Art from across the globe

The art is an eclectic mix of globally sourced, cutting edge contemporary art, with a nod to the more traditional masters. A bold and beautiful statement piece by Balian artist, Ngurah dominates the eye and draws you in, bringing a sense of theatre to the room. Also an accomplished musician, the artist

The vision behind Piece Gallery was to bring art from across the globe to seasoned and first time collectors, interior designers and those with a desire to bring expressive pieces into their home. The works of Piece speak to you regardless of your style or taste - of course there is space on the walls

for the serene seascapes of, ‘Old Nack’, by third generation, Essex born artist John Horswell, but there is clearly an exciting diversity of range and subject matter that is unique to the area. The perfect piece can create an instant colour palette or a focal point for your interior. A personal favourite, Newcastle based artist, Leigh Lambert brings ‘beauty to a concrete jungle’, emanating the nostalgia of youth with pops of colour on monochrome, while in stark contrast, Kimberley Harris captures the natural beauty of the Suffolk countryside with her atmospheric, ‘Evening Bliss’. Michael Keller’s ‘City Showers’, bring a grand elegance to a wall space, while Chung Shek’s, ‘New shoes’, dance through the gallery with exquisite precision.

piece, long after the flame has extinguished. So whether you are searching for a gift as special as your friend or family member, Piece will help with your selection and package it beautifully - all you have to do is surprise them!

Your perfect piece The team will happily assist with a commission, so any artist you are drawn to can create a piece just for you. Pop up evenings will feature existing and local artists and works are on rotation, so there is always a reason to stop by! What was once reserved for a trip to London or overseas can now be found on your very own doorstep, with an open invitation to browse or buy...... Come and see us and you might just find your piece for life.

City Showers by Michael Keller The additional allure of Piece, is not only the artwork for visual pleasue, but a unique collection of homeware accessories, from the striking minimalism of German brand Phillipi, to the mesmerizing colour of Venetian hand blown glass by Gardeco. While the inspired kind and friendly ‘visitors’, courtesy of Guido Deleu, observe a beautifully hand crafted ceramic apple, bringing another dimension to the space. The rich scents and spices of Tanzanian landscapes, alight the senses with stunning hand poured candles by Onno and Baobab, cased in artisan glass, with a unique aspect and providing a chic centre

LOCAL ISSUES

Results of your vote It is 10.50pm, Thursday May 2nd and I await a car to take me to the Count at Garon Park. All day, spent sitting outside the polling Station, listening to residents condemning the Conservative and Labour Parties and their role in the Brexit negotiations but these same residents also acknowledged the role of Independent Councillors in the Ward who have worked hard to create a better community and fight against the negative efforts of the Tory led Council. It seemed as if many of the residents were voting Independent and Lib Dem and if this is carried on across the Borough, it will mean the Tory Administration falls. I will not know until about 1.30 am and then, I will add my thoughts about just what went wrong for the Tory Councillors on the Council. It could be the £2.5 million wasted on the Cliffs Museum white elephant, the undervaluing of the Seaway Car park and the sale of it for £1. It could be the lack of professionalism of the Senior Directors who have failed with the Gateway and City Beach projects that cost millions. It could be the drive to create numerous flats rather than decent homes with gardens. The Count was very exciting and with a result of Conservative -7; Labour +2; Independent +3 and Lib Dem at +2 the result was good June 2019

for Southend. The Independents received a +11% share of the vote and with the Conservatives losing 12% it demonstrated just how dissatisfied the residents were with the Conservative Administration. Brexit has been given as the reason across the UK but in Southend, I believe it is the local policies that driven the residents to vote in a new Administration.

Many permutations

I will not know the results of the discussions currently taking place on the format of the new Administration as I write this article, as the permutations are many. It could be an Independent, labour, Lib Dem coalition giving 29 seats against the 20 Tory seats with 1 unaligned seat plus the Mayor. The Independent and Lib Dem gains were quite spectacular with Keith Evans (Blenheim) ousting the Deputy Leader of the Council James Courtney. The Lib Dem, Paul Collins did well to unseat Trevor Byford and in Leigh, Ashley Thompson had a resounding victory to unseat Bernard Arscott. In Shoebury, Simon Wakefield won with a majority of just 35 and Ian Shead won back the ward for the Independents with a close majority of 29 votes. Kimberley O’Connell was unlucky in St. Laurence to lose by just 39 votes. Ron Woodley and Paul Van Looy maintained excellent majorities with votes of 2,232 and 1,257 respectively.

and indeed will resolve the policing issues. More parking is obviously required and the cost of parking for residents reduced. Plans are in-place to revive the High Street and these plans will be forced through by the new Administration.

Residents views ignored

Hard working candidates supported

The results demonstrate that good hardworking candidates who know the Borough were supported by the residents and the days of a Conservative, arrogant and inefficient Administration are over. There will be an end to the expensive use of consultants when Senior Directors are paid very well to make decisions. The Chief Executive made decisions on the eve of polling day which the opposition did not wish to be made and this was a bad error of judgement on her part. Past decisions to demolish good housing in Herbert Grove were inexplicable and the removal of all social housing in the proposed Queensway development was an insult to our residents and opposition groups. Southend Council has been operating in a not fit-for-purpose manner for a long time and has no cost centre structure where Officer’s time spent on projects can be analysed. The inexplicable decisions made by Officers have been allowed to progress because the Conservative Administration allowed such to happen but as we enter a new era, I am certain that the wishes of the residents with respect to development (less flats and more houses with gardens) and a serious motivation to bring back more seafront entertainment. The revival of the Shakedown demonstrated it was needed and now calls are being made to bring back the Air-show. Parking across the Borough must be looked at and the Independents have plans to restore some sanity to the problem 10

I have always felt that our Conservative led Council actually, ignored the views of local residents and it has paid the price, not because of Brexit but because it failed to listen and forced through vanity projects (such as the Gateway’s atrocious junction by Victoria Station) and allowed our town to lose the values it once had. I compliment each person who made the effort to vote. It worked!

STOP PRESS NEWS

The result of the election for Leader of the Council and a possible working majority on the Council at Mayor Making today resulted in a boost for true democracy in the Borough. No one Party or Group had a majority and in-line with the voting across the Borough we have the Tories on 20 seats, Labour and Lib Dem on 19 seats, Independents on 11 seats and 1 non-aligned. Neither Labour or the Tories would agree to having an Independent Leader which would have seen a majority grouping. This will mean that no one Party can bring in projects without debate and agreement. The Independents were offered Cabinet seats but true to the Nolan principles could not work under any political leader.

Petition grabs SBC's attention! I am the local resident, who with your incredible assistance, gathered 2276 signatures for a petition to be submitted to the Council regarding helping our floundering Town centre by requesting action with parking charges as they are astronomic and keeping shoppers, visitors away and discouraging them for staying longer than an hour, get your hair cut, lunch, gift, dentist it costs an average ÂŁ1.90+ for an hour.

Why did I get involved? I attended meetings coordinated by a well-known businessman who is passionate about saving Southend in these changing times, and many short term and long term ideas were presented and parking charges was highlighted as a quick and effective win, sadly our Council seem to be slow with accepting new ideas and innovation for our failing High Street. Instead of moaning and berating our Council about the state of our High Street, I thought I would do something, so that is when the petition for 2 hrs free parking in car parks was launched, and WOW what a response from you all in assisting with the collection of signatures, the effort from all has been heart-warming and to hear that all want Southend to thrive again. Many other Towns have implemented a recovery plan and if you read government backed articles, making parking costs more attractive is the first step to rebuilding footfall. Our Council cry that they will lose income, but are not considering the lost long-term income with businesses closing or leaving the High Street. Reducing parking charges is the first

16

step, but much more initiative needs to be shown and welcomed by the Council to make our Town great again.

A 10 point proposal! The petition was presented to the Council on the 17th April, and then I was advised it could be a number of months before a response (there are 5 formal steps), but... wait for it... on the 17th of May, breaking news, Cllr Cox issued a 10 point proposal of actions to be taken, and this includes several parking charges adjustments in and around the Town - so it appears the council have listened to the people!! Refer to Echo dated the 17th May. So next steps - the Council have advised they are working on the dates for implementation and these will be officially passed by the cabinet in direct response to the two petitions, on the 25th June (the other petition was co-ordinated by Rossis Ice Cream parlour regarding seafront chargestotal 1700 signatures!) and then released so that comments can be made by the public. I have been advised by good authority that this will NOT be months but sooner rather than later! Please be assured I will be unwavering in following progress and I will keep the Oracle updated with progress. This is one small step and I hope the council follow other Towns examples with new directives to rebuild our High Street and support small and large businesses. Thanks again to you all.

Awkward... (questions to ask an Estate Agent)! If you are thinking about moving, you'll probably ask more than one firm of Estate Agents to value your home. Here are some clever questions you might want to ask before making your choice:

In terms of local sales and available property - where does your firm stand in comparison to other local agents? If they can answer 'first' or 'always in the top three', you might have more faith in their valuation figure and their track record. If they start talking about a 'much wider coverage' or produce a series of charts and graphs that have no relation to our area - it's time to put the kettle on!

Which firm do you consider to be your biggest competitor? If you haven't arranged for several agents to value your home - the answer to this question might give you a good indication of which firm to ask for a second opinion!

How did you arrive at the valuation price for my property? Ideally, the Estate Agent that you're talking to will be older than your oldest pair of shoes. If they can't make comparable references to similar properties that have recently sold and aren't knowledgeable about nearby Schools and services - they've probably just searched on a 'value my house.com' internet site!

Do you receive commission for recommending external firms? Some Estate Agents are heavily targeted to sell conveyancing leads, mortgages and insurance. Typically, such Agents might spend as much time talking about those services as they spend discussing the property.

Where are your branches and when are they open? The most reassuring and convenient answer is likely to

June 2019

be: 'our nearest office is in the local shopping parade, we have several other nearby branches and we're open 7 days a week'. That way you can call in to see your Agent whenever best suits you.

What type of Contract do you use? Some Agents may still use a 'Sole Selling Rights' Contract instead of a 'Sole Agency' Contract. This may mean that you have to pay the Agent even if you sell the property to a relative. It's certainly worth checking.

How much will you charge and are there any other costs? Their fee should be competitive - but should also be judged on a level playing field. If you're talking to a 'full service agent' who will guarantee 'no sale-no fee' but also offer professional photography, professional floorplans, enhanced internet listings, a local branch that's open 7 days a week and accompanied viewing appointments - they are likely to be more expensive than an 'internet only' agent. You can judge if those services could help you achieve more interest and a higher sale price for your property - and less hassle and worry for you. Some agents may try and charge for enhanced internet listings, large press adverts or accompanied viewings. It's also worth knowing if the amount they charge will fluctuate in line with the price they sell your home for. Some might ask to be paid a % of your original asking price or a fixed fee (irrespective of the price they achieve for your house). For a fairly young firm, Hunt Roche have always adopted a traditional approach to doing business. Their flagship Thorpe Bay branch at 170 The Broadway opened less than three years ago and it quickly became clear that good old fashioned customer service and hard work are just as important here as embracing new technology and marketing ideas. Hunt Roche offer a free valuation service carried out by a Director of the firm with over 25 years experience in the local property market.

Clinic of excellence

As seen in

VOGUE magazine

Thinking of having laser hair removal? Not all hair removal systems are equal! There are 2 methods for hair removal IPL and Diode Ice Lasers. Which is better, IPL or laser for hair removal? Why do some clinics have IPL rather than a laser? One of the main reasons for this is to save on costs. A single IPL machine can treat a number of skin conditions, including excess hair, pigmentation, capillaries and skin problems but does not treat any of these conditions as well as a dedicated machine for the job, like a Diode Laser for hair removal. Importantly IPL can only treat pale skin/dark hair and is extremely painful, IPL is also ineectual in treating coarse hair. Because we use advanced Lasers we can treat all skin tones, hair colours and hair textures with no pain which is very important when treating the face or bikini area. Our commitment to patient care is exemplary, while our specialist grid system treats every millimetre of the skin, giving the client the best possible results Recommended laser hair removal systems available in UK are Soprano ICE & Diode ICE Laser. CHC Aesthetics has both IPL and Diode Ice Laser, we never use IPL for hair removal as June 12 2019

the Diode Laser provides far superior results on all skin tones, hair colours and textures and is fast and pain free. Our advanced hair removal system treats all skin tones, hair colours and textures.

BEAUTY

Coping with hair loss and thinning during cancer treatment

Catriona Sheehan was my great friend, business partner and inspiration. She was funny, occasionally fierce, highly creative and intelligent, brave and loved life. Tragically, cancer took all that away from her, Catriona’s family and of course, us her friends and colleagues. Catriona’s passing is still very raw. However, she would not want us to wallow in self-pity, instead urging us to live life to the full and make whatever contribution we can to combatting this terrible, dreadful disease. Working in a salon makes you realise that getting your haircut or styled is a feelgood experience, but if you’re coping with hair loss caused by chemotherapy, well, that can be very challenging. Especially as many women regard their hair as their ‘crowning glory’.

Creating your new 'look' If you are about to undergo or have recently started treatment for cancer, it is possible that you may experience some hair loss. Understanding this beforehand can help you to prepare to create a new ‘look’ for yourself during the course of your therapy. You may decide that a wig is the best choice. If so, my advice would be to get one before you start your treatment. This way, you can match it to your current or natural colour and style. Alternatively, a hat, scarf or stylish turban will not only keep your head warm on chillier days but also protect your scalp from burning on hot, sunny days.

Of course, cutting your hair short is another option. You may find it easier to do this in stages, to lessen the effect a shock transformation, especially if you have long hair to begin with.

Taking care of your hair Although you may lose your hair during your treatment, it is important to look after it, during and after therapy. This means washing it regularly, using gentle, non-medicated products. Apply conditioner only to the ends of your hair, change your comb or brush to one with soft, wide-spaced teeth or prongs and wear something on your head at night. Avoid using heating products, such as a dryer or straighteners and styling products, such as colours, perms and relaxers. After cancer treatment, your hair will start to grow back and your stylist will be able to help you decide on what look will best suit you. They can also advise you about what shampoo and styling products will look after your hair and scalp during this time. It is also an exciting time, as you can plan what possible new tints or colours you are going to treat yourself to. In memory of Catriona, we are raising money for Cancer Research UK and if you need advice or support, visit their website www.cancerresearchuk.org by Craig Smith Director of Grateful Heads Hair Salon

FOOD

Homestyle Piri-Piri Chicken Anyone who has been to Portugal will immediately conjure up memories of sardines grilled over hot coals and fingers getting messy eating hot delicious piri-piri chicken. With the summer on its way this is a great dish to eat al fresco teamed with salad and hot potatoes or crusty bread to wipe the plate. It can also be put on the bbq and is very easy.

Method

1/2 tsp caster sugar

Heat the oven 190°C/170°C fan/ gas 5. Halve and deseed the pepper, brush with a little of the oil, put in a tin and roast until soft (about 25 minutes). Peel the skin if it comes off easily; leave on if it doesn’t. Chop roughly, then crush in a pestle and mortar. Remove the pepper. Deseed the chillies, chop finely and put in the mortar with the garlic, oregano and chilli flakes. Pound to a paste, then add the vinegar, lemon juice, sugar, salt, remaining oil and crushed pepper. Alternatively put the whole lot including the pepper in a food processor and whizz together. Put the chicken into a broad shallow dish and pour on most of the marinade. Turn to coat, cover with cling film and put in the fridge for 4 hours (or overnight ideally), turning a couple of times. Bring to room temperature before cooking. Heat the grill to high and arrange the chicken on the grill pan, skin-side up. Put the grill pan 10cm from the heat and grill for 12 minutes per side, reducing the heat to medium halfway through. Baste a few times with the juices or a little reserved marinade. Move the chicken another 10cm from the heat and grill for 5 minutes on each side. It should be cooked through (make sure there are no traces of pink), sizzling and golden. This can go on the BBQ but chicken on the bone takes a little bit of cooking as it can look cooked from the outside but raw in the middle so just take care and cook slowly. Serve immediately with a lettuce, cucumber and tomato salad and fried potatoes or crusty bread.

Do you own a conservatory not fit for purpose? There are literally many 1000’s of home owners throughout the UK who own a conservatory, it is without doubt that a high majority are totally inefficient during the summer and winter months. Is this you, do you own a conservatory that is really not fit for purpose? A high number of conservatories installed during the late 80’s, 90’s and early 2000’s will have a polycarbonate roof. A roof with no insulation value and virtually zero protection from direct sunlight. This gives you a room which is far too hot during summer and has a fridge effect in winter. You also have a roof which is difficult to keep clean as well as being a haven for insects. The frustrating thing for many owners is that the conservatories are in a satisfactory condition, all double glazed with many years of life to offer. More and more home owners are opting to have a more thermally efficient roof installed. High-Tech have various options available. The first and most popular is to create a thermally efficient sky room by removing the existing roof. A timber frame roof will be constructed to the same standards as if you had

a new extension built. Timber joists are then reinforced to accept a glass lantern or flat roof light. Treated timber boarding and warm roof insulation is fitted along with new external UPVC roof line and guttering products. It is then made permanently water tight with our lifetime guaranteed flat roof system. The glass roof light is installed. Followed by internal installation of a new conventional plaster board ceiling along with lighting etc. The ceiling is plastered ready for painting. Thus, giving you a beautiful sky room orangery, oozing natural light. Another option would be to install a tiled roof system manufactured by Leka systems. This will keep the new roof to the same dimension’s as the existing roof. Sky lights can be installed to create natural light, with a large range of tile colours available. Internally, the vaulted ceiling will

be plastered ready for painting and electrics installed. This creates a more conventional living space; the vaulted ceiling offers a feeling of more space and most importantly, a thermal efficient room to use all year round. High-Tech will always remove the existing roof and comply with building regulations. High-Tech will create a luxurious living space. The tiled roof conversion offers a more closed in style of room with a high vaulted ceiling. The orangery style sky room with the glass lantern or sky light will not only offer the WOW factor, it will also give all the natural light required. Bring your conservatory back to life, add value to your home and enjoy the comforts. High-Tech offer very completive funding options along with interest free credit. Terms & Conditions available on request. TAKE ADVANTAGE OF THE SPRING & EARLY SUMMER SALE AND SAVE 20% ON ALL GLASS LANTERNS AND SKY LIGHTS.

Expecting Excellence at Shoebury High‌ As a result of prolonged and sustained improvement in the performance of its students, Shoeburyness High School continues to be the school of choice for many parents within its community and beyond. For entry into Year 7 in September 2019, the waiting list is running at over 165 even though the intake has already increased to 327 students. The growth of our school, together with the continued popularity of our grammar stream, means we will have a fully selective pathway for the third year running in September 2019. During their first half term, students can enrol in our Academy+ groups, which cover everything from Chemistry Club to Music Tuition, Maths plus, Digital Art to Astronomy. STEM students have the opportunity to complete bronze and silver CREST awards in Years 8 and 9. It doesn’t end in Year 11…. Our sixth-form provision continues to grow, with a record number of applicants: 318, for September 2019, both from our own students and external applicants. We offer almost 40 courses, which include all of the ‘Facilitating Subject’ A-Levels (English Literature, Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, Geography, History, French and Spanish) which are held in the highest regard by the top universities. Thorough support is provided to those setting their sights on studying at a Russell Group university, with regular visits to universities and seminars in school from both universities and business. Our aim is to increase yet further our sixth-form provision, to ensure that we are the most successful provider in the area. This year, over 70% of our Year 13 cohort have applied for university.
