his month Oracle has produced a very special Christmas edition to help showcase a couple of events that happened last month. Early in November I was invited on a two-day press trip to Bern, Switzerland. Not a destination I would normally think of going to, however, I was extremely impressed with how much the city and the surrounding area had to offer. I have shared my experiences through a couple of travel articles that appear in this month and January’s edition.

New Bathroom? Leaking Tap? Boiler need attention?

For last month’s competition, I asked you, the resident, to submit a question, that if chosen, would win you and a guest an evening at the Café Masala to ask your question to the Leader of Southend Borough Council, Cllr Woodley. Forty participants enjoyed a‘Question Time’themed evening with a free meal. As this event was so successful and well received, Oracle will be holding further events like this in 2015. This month’s competiton is to win a pair of tickets to include dinner (excluding drinks) to see Georgina Jackson on the Tuesday, 6th January 2015 at Annie's Jazz evening. Annie’s Jazz, Swing and Latin Club brings London to you! Enjoy some of the finest artistes available every Tuesday in the relaxed, candlelit atmosphere of the dedicated function suite above O'neill's Public House in Southend High Street. For more information, see anniesjazz.vpweb.co.uk or send e-mails to anniesjazzsouthend@gmail.com To enter please send your contact details to: Oracle/Annie’s Jazz Competiton, 39 Alexandra Street, Southend-on-Sea, SS1 1BW or email: info@oraclepublications.co.uk closing date 30th December 2014. BERA : A Residents Update

D

The Association

ear Member/Resident,

The Burges Estate Residents Association would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. It has been some time since our last newsletter to members, but that does not mean that as a committee we have not been busy, and we are taking this opportunity through this article to give everyone a brief update.

Peter Croysdill, Chair of the North Thorpe Bay area and his committee, have been up and running for some time and are energised in dealing with their local issues. Many more residents have become members, especially now that they are aware of the organisation and have their own committee to contact with any problems.

Well over 1,000 residents have now taken up the option to either purchase their freehold without restrictive covenants or are purchasing out the restrictive covenants if they are freeholders. These are now going through the final few and if yours has not been completed then follow up with your solicitors.

As Peter is part of the main BERA committee, Ron Woodley is part of Peter’s committee, sharing the problems and issues that cover all the areas BERA is involved with. We are still looking for a Chair and a committee to cover the West Shoebury area and would welcome any volunteers. You won’t be alone as there are willing members to help organise and get the committee up and running.

The Committee, in conjunction with the Estate Freeholders, has now sent out reminders to householders who have not yet taken up the offer, and this opportunity will close at the end of November. These are in the minority and any householder who has not taken up the offer could be subject to the control of the new estate managers in the future.

All our members share a positive vision as to how our area should be maintained, improved and developed. The Council having been reminded of their civic responsibility to maintain an attractive street scene, including our parks and open spaces, have responded accordingly. We can all see the improvement as there has been a sudden and dramatic change of emphasis

by the Council. This should continue as the Council’s budgets now reflect their commitment to maintaining our street scene, parks and open spaces. BERA is determined to continue leading the way in protecting our recreational areas and open spaces. One certain aspect of this would, of course, be the previous Council’s proposal to build a sea defence on Shoebury Common. As an organisation we are against the previous administrations application and will work closely with the Council to produce a proposal that is acceptable to the majority of residents.

Policing Issues The latest information concerning crime in Southend is as follows: Theft down 14%, Burglary down 18%, Shoplifting down 9%, Vehicle crime down 8%, Robbery down 55% and Criminal Damage down 10%. However, violent crime is up by 23%, of which 85% are assaults and nearly half are through domestic abuse. As many members know we have a positive relationship with the police and are being kept informed of any local problems as they arise. We do have a supply of personal and panic alarms, as well as Select DNA kits, enabling residents to invisibly mark valuable property, which is then registered to your home address.

Planning Issues and Applications are constantly monitored to ensure that the integrity and uniqueness of the area is maintained and where necessary to support local residents if requested to do so.

Thanks to our members

The committee would like to thank every member that contributes with their annual BERA’s Web-Site has now attracted over renewal fee. 15,455 hits; see www.bera.co.uk for updates on such subjects as the tram stop shelter, This enables the committee to fund various which the committee is fully supporting. We activities, including planting new trees and hope to see this important building being repairing shrub boarders, which help to brought back into use and that the charity maintain our local street scene. Once again that has been set up is successful in its we are working with the shop owners in The Broadway for a Christmas Community attempt. Extravaganza, by planning to have lights on the lamp standards and the Tree in The Broadway. If you feel that you would be interested in joining the association then please contact us on the details listed below.

The Music Man Project: from Southend to The London Palladium

D

avid Stanley, a Leigh Town Councillor, musician, composer, and teacher, is a truly remarkable person. He has gained public recognition for changing our attitudes towards and understanding of people who have learning disabilities. Through the power of music, he has transformed people’s lives and made a great difference to their general well-being. The Music Man Project has succeeded in bringing local people with learning difficulties together, teaching them certain skills and equipping them with the confidence to go out on the stage and win the hearts of the audience each and every time they perform. It is absolutely remarkable what David has managed to achieve with his students in a relatively short space of time. He has discovered hidden talents that his students did not know they possessed.

Engaging all ages The Music Man Project engages people of all ages and various levels of disability. It also improves their communication skills and takes some pressure off their carers. Many students say that David’s Music School is the only place where their insecurities are DECEMBER 2014

addressed. This is thanks to a group of wonderful, dedicated volunteers who give up their free time to assist during music lessons and integrate with the disabled. Students with learning difficulties, their parents, and carers agree that music is especially important as it enhances their social lives and David’s music lessons are something that people can look forward to. David’s students enjoy his classes and performing, as they provide them with confidence in themselves while also engaging their parents.

Outstanding work This project been praised by many people across the country, including the Prime Minister who is hoping that the example in Southend will encourage similar such projects elsewhere in the United Kingdom. David’s work in Special Schools has been described as outstanding by OFSTED and the fact that The Music Man Project impacts on around 250 students every week proves that there is a huge need for such initiatives and we are indeed very lucky to have David in our Town.

Founded in 2001 Since David officially launched the Music Man Project in 2012, I do my very best to attend the various concerts which are being held. I am delighted to say that the Music Man Project Celebrity Calendar has just been launched. It features students pictured with well-known individuals and celebrities such as London Mayor Boris Johnson, Patti Boulaye, Baroness Tanni Grey-Thompson, Lord Rix, Southend United F.C., Buddy Greco, Brendan Foster, Ann Widdecombe, Tony Cottee, Charlie Webster, Juliet Sear, and Dame Vera Lynn. The Music Man Project has so far performed at the Cliffs Pavilion Theatre and various local events and Christmas Shows but they have just had the exciting news that Music Man Project students and schools will be performing at the London Palladium, on the 21st of June 2015. This is tremendous news for the Music Man Project and recognition of its power and worth. As the project As David himself said, “music does not continues on its journey, I have no doubt that discriminate against anyone”. after the London Palladium the next stop will be the Royal Albert Hall! Support the project The success of the Music Man Project is certainly due to David’s dedication, talent, and organisational skills. However, he would be first to acknowledge that the project is nothing without the tremendous talent of his students who have learning difficulties.

If you would like to learn more about the Music Man Project, please visit the website: www.themusicmanproject.co.uk You can also find The Music Man Project fan page on Facebook. Tickets for the “Music is Magic” show at the London Palladium will be available from January 2015, prices starting from £10. You can buy the Music Man Calendar from the Calendar Club at the Royals Shopping Centre or Victoria Circus Shopping Centre in Southend. The Calendar costs £10 and the revenue will go to support the activities of the Music Man Project. by David Amess, Member of Parliament for Southend West

Café Masala dares to be different A taste of India with a contemporary twist

A

s soon as you walk into its elegant, airy and modern dining room, you know that Café Masala is different. Although it has become a Thorpe Bay institution since it opened its doors eighteen years ago, this is not somewhere to soak up the night's excesses; Café Masala is a destination restaurant for those who appreciate great cooking. The menu is largely based on classic dishes from the Indian continent, using only the best and freshest ingredients. Unsurprising it has won a string of accolades; including back-to-back British Curry Awards in 2007 and 2008. Comfortingly familiar The main courses offer you a culinary tour of both the comfortingly familiar and completely unexpected. Take, for example, the wonderfully named Rowgoonius range of dishes. Originally from Sylhet in north eastern Bangladesh, the base sauce is prepared using methi paratha leaves, with a little capsicum and a mixture of spices to make it medium hot, then garnished with fried tomatoes and onions. It is a particular favourite with the restaurants most discerning diners, the waiters themselves. However, it is one particular dish for which Café Masala has become famous for - the Special Sizzler Juliet. As it is brought to the table, every diner in the restaurant turns round to see this piece of culinary theatre. Marinated pieces of lamb, chicken or king prawns are cooked in a traditional clay oven over charcoal, lavished with fresh mint and coriander, capsicums, onions and given an exciting kick, courtesy of flaming brandy. This is not just a main course, it is an event! DECEMBER 2014

During the balmy summer days and nights, not everyone wants some of the more traditional dishes, so a special seasonal menu has been introduced. Highlights include lightly spiced, succulent grilled lamb chops and Chicken Tikka Stir-Fried Noodles. Vegetarians are also well-catered for with a Vegetable Biriani fit for a Persian king (where this dish originated), Chilli Aubergine and over ten other delicious choices. With its modern, clean and contemporary décor, Café Masala could be called a ’boutique’ restaurant. Certainly its modest number of covers create an intimate feel; making it perfect for an evening dinner date with your partner, a weekend gathering of friends or business lunch with clients and colleagues.

Christmas Dinner - £29.95 Due to popular demand, the Cafe Masala will again be hiring two London Chefs to prepare a traditional English Christmas roast dinner with all the trimmings. Many guests re-booked immediately after last year’s success however there are still places available, so book your place now to avoid disappointment. Treat yourself to a three course traditional Christmas dinner for only £29.95 and avoid all the hassle of cooking and just sit back and allow the Cafe Masala to cook for you this Christmas. Cafe Masala is open 7-days a week and can be found at 187 The Broadway, Thorpe Bay, Southend-on-Sea, Essex, SS1 3EX. Call 01702 589 494 to make your booking.

Oracle Hair & Beauty

Jingle Belles… A

s anyone who knows me will tell you, I always get terribly excited when the postman pops a stiffie through my letterbox. After all, an invitation to a swanky Christmas party is the perfect excuse to dress up to the nines and try a new look.

Tip: Begin the curls at ear height, keeping the hair on top of your head flat. Once they're set, unwind the spirals and separate with your fingers. Run a brush through for extra body. To maintain the bouncy style, finish with a blast of hairspray.

The festive season is the perfect time to experiment with a new hairstyle; whether it’s super glamorous, edgy or classic. To give you some ideas for your Big Night Out, I’ve rummaged in my big sack of inspiration and found some terrific looks for you girls, regardless of you being naughty or nice.

Retro revival

Look Grand Elegant hair doesn't mean complicated hair. Simply slicking it back can create a polished, gorgeous style that rocks. Stars like Cara Delevingne and Emma Watson are experts on working this dramatic-buteasy style work on the grand occasion. Begin by working in a smoothing serum for sheen, and then part your hair with a comb. Next, pull the hair toward the nape of your neck. If it’s long enough, tie in a low ponytail. Twist into a chignon, and secure the free ends to your head with a simple metal clip.

Continuing my retro revival, I’m a big fan of braids. Try twisting dry hair around a one-inch curling iron as this boosts body and helps the braids stay put. Remember: Always braid your hair supertight, even if you want a loose look. Once you're done, soften it up with your fingers. Sleekify an old-skool ponytail by texturizing damp tresses with a spray and then blow-drying. Gather into a high pony and use a curling iron to shape your hair into a round shape, then gently tease. Give it a good spritz with hairspray and bingo, you are ready to partay! Happy Christmas everyone! by Craig Smith Sponsored by

To paraphrase Frankie Valli, big curls don’t cry. A little 70’s—and ridiculously easy to re-create: This is my take on glamorous, retro hair. Before blowing your hair dry, make a deep side-parting. Next, coil sections of hair around a half-inch curling iron, then pin down.

After being dealt with some difficult blows Cllr Woodley initially discussed with the residents how the Council is dealing with their concerns and why such actions were taken. He then began engaging in some constructive thinking by also taking some of the wonderful suggestions made by discerning residents such as looking at new ways of conserving energy, as well as identifying hotspots for traffic congestion.

Oracle Event

After the inquisition was over, Oracle thanked the residents for attending and for their loyal readership over the last 9 1/2 years. Also thanking its culinary hosts Café Masala and guest speaker Cllr Woodley who took time out of his busy schedule running the borough to attend and spend time with the local residents.

Readers enjoy a hot night out with the Oracle!

O

racle launched its first event on Wednesday 12th November, with ‘Oracle Question Night’ led by Southend Council Leader Cllr Ron Woodley as its first guest speaker held at Café Masala, Thorpe Bay.

Huge Success The night was a huge success and managed to enlighten, captivate and entertain all involved. After receiving such unanimous and overwhelming positive response, Oracle hopes to hold another event like this in the future, so keep your eyes on this space! For photos and information on the evening, please go to: www.oraclepublications.co.uk/event by Michaela Buckley

O

Leader of Southend Borough Council. Cllr Ron Woodley

15 lucky winners and their guests were chosen to attend and ask Cllr Woodley important questions about the town and how it is run, resulting in some nail-biting moments! The event began when the 40 attendees were treated to some of Café Masala’s delicious local curries, the food was not only enjoyed by everyone in the restaurant but also served as a great talking point as some of the readers were taking the plunge into new and exotic foods for their palates!

Hot topics! But it wasn’t just the curry that was hot! Council News

Developing Southend A

s a council we have recently announced Henry Boot Developments Limited as our preferred development partner for the Airport Business Park, Southend. I am delighted that we have been able to make this announcement as it marks an important milestone in the life of this project and a major step forward in creating new skilled employment opportunities in Southend-on-Sea and Rochford. We are looking forward to entering into a longterm partnership with Henry Boot Developments and to working with them on the exciting development which will secure the long term prosperity of the area.

Vibrant Businesses This opportunity to create a new vibrant business community with approximately 7500 jobs is being supported by Rochford District Council and we will be actively discussing the details of the planning application over the coming months. Once the OJEU standstill period has finished, (which is required by the Official Journal of the European Union procurement Procedure) a development agreement will be refined and completed by early 2015 covering all contractual matters. The Council can then work with Henry Boot Developments to submit a planning application in 2015 with a determined aim to starting work on site in 2016.

28

T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E

As always public and stakeholder consultation will be an important part of the planning application process.

Working in Partnership Henry Boot Developments are equally excited to be working in partnership with Southend-on-Sea Borough Council to bring forward this development opportunity and to realise the vision for this project. They have a long and successful track record in delivering joint venture projects with local authority partners across the UK and will contribute considerable expertise and will bring skills, experience and development finance to work alongside with the Council’s land and capital investments to deliver a long term sustainable business park bringing about real transformational change and economic prosperity to this part of south Essex. To realise the full extent of this golden opportunity for Southend-on-Sea it is vital to ensure that our education policies now reflect the skills required and give our young people every opportunity to fill these new jobs that will be created.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas DQG &KULV LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW his approach is a major

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

recipe of the month

For the crumb: 50g/2oz fresh white breadcrumbs 15g/ ½ oz butter, softened 15g/ ½ oz chopped parsley

In the Kitchen with Judy Barden

1. Put the gammon in a large pan, enough to hold it

snugly. Add the onion and orange halves, cinnamon, bay leaves and juniper berries. Pour in the cider and top up with water. Bring to the boil then cover and simmer gently, allowing 20 mins per 450g/1lb plus 20 mins extra. Skim off any scum that forms and top up with water if necessary.

Spiced Ham with Cumberland Sauce

C

hristmas is the one time of year that a lot of people cook a ham. A lovely large piece of gammon will serve lots of people and quite reasonably with lots of leftovers for ham sandwiches. For years the most popular finishes have been a sticky glaze or a crusting of crumbs held in position by the layer of exposed fat once the skin has been removed. I have combined both, a glaze and a crumb. A classic sauce is a fruity Cumberland made with port and redcurrant jelly along with oranges and lemons, lovely and sweet and tangy. Nothing but the best. Enjoy! Serves 12-16 2.7-3.6kg/6-8lb unsmoked boned gammon 1 onion & 1orange, halved and studded with 12 cloves 1 cinnamon stick, broken in half 4 bay leaves plus extra to garnish 6 juniper berries, coarsely bruised plus extra to garnish 500ml can sweet cider 2 oranges, quartered

For the Cumberland sauce:

2. To make the sauce, using a potato peeler pare the zest from half an orange and half a lemon. Cut off the white pith and then shred the zest into small strips. Put in a pan with cold water, bring to the boil, simmer for 5 mins then strain and set aside. Squeeze the juice from the oranges and lemons and put in a pan with the shallots, mustard and redcurrant jelly and simmer for 5 minutes. Sieve then add the port. Blend the corn flour with 2 tsp cold water and add to the sauce, bring to the boil to thicken, stirring constantly. Add the zest and leave to cool. Serve chilled, (it can be kept for up to 2 weeks in the fridge). 3. Cool the gammon slightly, remove the string and

then cut away the skin to leave an even layer of fat. Transfer to a roasting tin with 4 tbsp cooking liquid and the orange quarters. Preheat the oven to 220c/fan 200/gas 7.

4. Mix the honey, orange juice and zest and brush about a fifth over the ham and oranges. Bake for 15 mins then baste 2-3 more times until golden and starting to char. 5. Make the topping; spread the breadcrumbs on a baking sheet and put in the oven for a few minutes until golden brown ( keep checking them as they can burn quickly). Mix the warm crumbs with the butter and parsley, brush the ham with the last of the glaze and press on the crumbs. Serve decorated with the baked orange quarters, bay leaves, juniper berries and the Cumberland sauce.

Next month’s recipe: Herby Chicken Soup

Great shopping experience There are many interesting boutiques and cafes and because the houses are terraced they have an arcade in front of them, making for a great shopping experience even in the rain, as you are completely sheltered. Do try and make time for an afternoon tea at Jack’s Brasserie at the recently refurbished 5* Schweizerhof-Bern Hotel. When the food arrived, beautifully presented, it all looked all too good to be true and the taste experience was just as superb. This fabulous hotel with its 150 years of history has had many rich and famous guests cross its threshold such as Grace Kelly and Peter Ustinov. It also boasts a beautiful Spa offering a realm of relaxation extending over 500 square metres – pamper pool, sauna, hammam facilities as well as fitness and treatment rooms.

Fast track to Bern!

T

hose of you locally who have flown from London Southend Airport will agree that one of the great things about this airport is the convenience of having everything in close proximity. The good news is, the recently introduced new destination to Bern, Switzerland is also a great little airport with only a 20-minute check-in time! With 2 flights a day from London Southend with SkyWork Airlines it makes a very attractive Christmas shopping trip as flights only take 1 hr 40 mins and with the quick turn around at both airports, means more shopping/sightseeing time for you.

With the new easy and fast flights with SkyWork Airlines, why not try Bern as your new Christmas shopping destination? Next month, I will be enlightening you with skiing and other destination options within easy access from Bern. by Emma Wynne-Morgan

Bern, capital of Switzerland, is perfectly placed in the centre of the country and with the country’s very efficient railway service you can be in Zurich, Basel, Lucerne or Lausanne within an hour.

Oracle Gardening

How to prepare your garden for Winter

T

he BBQ has been packed away and the summerhouse has been locked up for another year. But wait! There’re still some final things you need to do before you shut your garden down for summer.

Autumn cleaning You’ve heard of spring cleaning, right? Well, autumn is the perfect time to spring clean your greenhouse. Clean out pots and seeders and clear away any dead plants. Now is a good time to properly clean the greenhouse in preparation for planting and sowing in the spring. Wash windows with a hot soapy solution and leave your greenhouse to air for a few days.

Service your equipment Tick another job off the to-do list and get your lawn-mower, hedge-cutter and any other electrical tools serviced before winter sets in.

Feed the birds Don’t forget your feathered friends over the winter period. Fat balls and water will be much appreciated by hungry birds looking for winter sustenance.

Composting Talking of leaves, rake up any fallen ones to create a leaf compost heap. Leaves make excellent composting material.

Wrap up warm Did you know you can buy fleeces especially for plants? They’re fairly cheap to pick up (about £5) and will protect your blooms from damaging frosts.

Lawn love Keep an eye on your lawn over the winter, especially if there are any heavy showers. You may need to assist drainage by aerating it. Feed your lawn with autumnal lawn feed. You shouldn’t feed it over the winter, as any growth your lawn achieves is unlikely to be sustainable due to the chilly conditions. Setting aside a couple of hours a week to prepare your garden for winter will be time well invested.

O

Net ponds Place netting over your pond and catch leaves before they catch you out. Fallen leaves will decompose in your pond, damaging filters and turning your water a murky black.

Shoeburyness roughs it! T

here is a long-standing tradition in Shoeburyness High School of our Post-16 students organising a charity week and the money they have raised has increased every year. Each day of charity week features a wide range of fund raising activities for the whole school to enjoy. From soaking Science teachers to shaving students heads or waxing their legs, the whole school rallies around the myriad of stalls set out by our students at break and lunch time, dig their hands in their pockets and contribute to really worthwhile causes. This year saw games stalls, cake and sweet stalls, a football tournament, raffles and the ever popular Talent Show, ‘Shoebury’s Got Talent’ which drew

crowds of over 300 every lunchtime! Pupils paid to cheer on their classmates performing songs, dance routines, musical instruments and stand-up comedy to rapturous applause. In the final on Friday lunchtime 1st, 2nd and 3rd place in the competition went to Reece Emery, Spencer Ali and Kayleigh Brown respectively. All students come from Year 7, which bodes well for the future musical productions in the school, if we have that much talent in the younger years. The last day of Charity week is also celebrated by a fancy dress competition with the whole of Years 12 and 13 taking part. The winner this year was Kyle Scuffins whose homemade Groot outfit from Guardians of the Galaxy was simply amazing! Collectively, the students have so far raised well in excess of £6000 for local charities; Southend YMCA, HARP – Southend’s Homeless Charity and BUST Southend, a local breast cancer charity.

Special mentions go to: Miss Young’s form group 129B for raising £515! – with a special thanks to Aaron Gold, Year 12, who shaved his head for charity, the boys from the form group who waxed their legs, Mr Matthews, from Booker Wholesalers for donating sweets from his company, and Alan Solly – Sancto’s owner, for donating 4 fabulous balloon stacks for the talent show final.

Shoebury Sleep Easy On the Friday before Charity Week 75 students and staff took part in the Sleep Easy challenge, sleeping (or not) rough in the school grounds for the evening, gaining sponsorship to do so. We were taken by the organisation’s ambition: “We want to instil an understanding of youth homelessness amongst our schools and its students in our community. Sleep Easy in Schools gives the students the opportunity to help make homelessness history in our town and provide them with the information to understand the risks and dangers that homeless young people suffer”. Syrie Cox, CEO Southend YMCA

The students threw themselves into the project, building some very elaborate cardboard accommodation. “The event décor and cardboard structures they made were a testament to the creativity and vision of the school’s students. I was particularly impressed with their diary room which was made with original artwork, fairy lights and ivy. Their hard work and dedication will leave a lasting legacy in Southend, with all the sponsorship going towards housing development for move-on accommodation. Tom Moulton, Sleep Easy Co-ordinator

Although the rain softened the cardboard somewhat, it never dampened our spirits, but it did put into perspective what some young people have to endure on a daily basis.

“Doing this with friends made it fun but imagining having to do this alone somewhere I don’t know, it would be terrifying.” Halima Surat, Year 13 student

“We may be doing this for just one night but it is very hard to imagine a homeless young person enduring longer colder nights or sleeping outside without any protection.” Efua Yamson, Year 13 student

Special thanks to Sam Palles-Clark, who raised £360 in sponsorship for the event and Abbie Davis for her photography and video editing skills – all of which can be seen on the Southend YMCA website. We are extremely proud of our Post-16 students for putting on such an amazing show this year and their Year Manager Miss Rose for co-ordinating their efforts. If you are in Year 11 and wish to join our Post-16 team here at Shoeburyness High School next September, then log onto the school website and apply online. We’ve over 40 courses to choose from and a host of extra-curricular activities to get involved in; as you can see!
