The Soccerdome A

s the final sections of the London Soccer Dome arrive in Southend and the convoy of lorries up and down the A127 start to come to a halt, it’s fair to say Southend United is heading in the right direction. The London Soccerdome was built in Greenwich in 2005 and it originally operated as the David Beckham academy before the former England and Manchester United star and his management company decided to pull out of the operation just four years later. The London Soccerdome was one of two set up by Beckham, and on the closure of the London branch, Blues stepped in to make the dome part of the training complex, ahead of a future move to a new stadium, Fossetts Farm.

Bentley has totaled over 100 appearances in between the sticks for the Blues despite being only 21, with many tipping the Basildon-born stopper for international honours in the future. Payne penned a one-year-deal at the start of last season, and was more of a bit-part player during his first campaign as a professional. However, this season has seen the 19-year-old attacking midfield man turn himself into a favourite of the fans as well as being the Club’s top scorer so far this season with seven strikes to his name. Top scorer Jack Payne

Southend Chief Executive Steve Kavanagh believes the erection of the Soccerdome will mean exciting times on the horizon for the Sky Bet League Two promotion chasers.

Dome is Key The Blues currently sit firmly in the play-off places in the division and are hunting down the automatic promotion places. Kavanagh believes the dome is key for the development of the Club’s impressive youth system, with two youth graduates – Daniel Bentley and Jack Payne – playing crucial roles in the Club’s rise to the higher echelons of the league. These two are the latest off the Southend conveyor belt of talent, following in the footsteps of current Charlton Athletic striker Franck Moussa and Wolves defender Dominic Lorfa – whose father played for the Club as well. “Seeing the likes of Jack Payne score on Saturdays and Dan Bentley keeping clean sheets for their local Club has added feeling when the player has come through the Academy,” Kavanagh said proudly. “Our aim is to build on the excellent work Ricky Duncan (youth Manager) and his team have put in place”. Kavanagh continued: “It’s hard not to notice the Soccerdome’s arrival and many fans around the ground on match days have spoken to me about this. “Our Academy was one of the highest scoring CAT 3 Academies in the country and the biggest barrier to becoming CAT 2, which is our stated objective, is requiring an indoor facility. “This provides that answer and the Technical Board who oversee the management of the Academy are busy working on plans to ensure our timelines fit to enable us to apply for CAT 2 at the earliest opportunity, something which will add to our already excellent recruitment.” Parts of the dome have been ferried over to the Club’s Boots & Laces Training Ground, and is slowly getting pieced together.

Training in the Soccerdome

Fantastic addition Although it will take a little while to be erected towards the back of the Southend United Training Ground, it is believed the Dome will be a fantastic addition to the Club. With the facility, many believe players let go by Premier League sides could head to Essex due to the high class facility, which could also be utilised for commercial activities as well. Southend will be aiming for the Dome to be a key part of the intended Fossetts Farm Stadium, and are intent on attracting talent to the Club with the new facility on show. The reconstruction of the Dome is now subject to a forthcoming comprehensive Planning Application, as requested by the Borough Council, to include the Club’s revised plans for the West Stand at Fossetts Farm. Kavanagh concluded: “I really do think the Club is heading in the right direction. We’re doing well on the pitch so far and are well placed under Phil Brown’s stewardship. The Board have backed him well, and off the pitch things are starting to take shape as well.”

Oracle Hair & Beauty

Glowing for Gold! T

he clocks going forward officially signal the start of British Summer Time, but that doesn’t mean it actually will get warmer just yet. Nevertheless, we love getting our t-shirts and flip flops on at the merest mention of spring. Unless you’ve been fortunate enough to get away to a sun-kissed destination before 29 March, the chances are you’ll have the skin tone of Michelangelo’s statue of David - so a tan from a bottle, or airbrush, is a serious consideration for those of us who want to look bronzed and beautiful in readiness for the balmier days ahead. After all, a cheeky touch of ‘fake bake’ can rejuvenate tired-looking skin by helping it to appear softer, smoother and more polished, giving you an instant body confidence boost. And guys, I know you’re doing it too. The ladies in my salon often tell me how much they’ve noticed the Dove Summer Glow lotion going down…

Keep it Retro The beauty industry is still in love with the retro look and that means that the 70s and 90’s Californian beach babe look is set to stay with us. Of course, this is perfect for a place like Southend, which is the Essex version of Santa Monica.

looking fabulous, just as Gwyneth Paltrow’s subtle, almost creamy lighter tones.

Build it gradually At first, try a gradual tan, which is lighter on the skin and can be built up if you want to go darker. To keep the tones as natural as possible, don’t apply your tanning lotion more than twice a week. If you’re using a spray, go down your body in quick motions and build up your tan in fine layers. Doing this will help you develop a gradual tan, just as you would in the real sun over several days or weeks.

Glossy Summer Glossy and moisture-soaked skin is big this summer, so preparing your skins is every bit as important as applying the tan itself. So, cleanse and exfoliate thoroughly beforehand. Choose a thicker moisturiser – and one with SPF. Massage it gently into your skin and leave it to absorb. Then slip into your red swimsuit, grab a float and give it plenty of Pammy on those beaches!

A thick moisturiser will make your ‘tan’ last longer and fade more evenly, but make sure you go for a hue that suits your natural colouring. The cast of TOWIE can be a good indication of why this is important. The honeyed, golden tones of Farah Fawcett can your

Council News

Future projects J

ust a brief update following last month’s article concerning the proposed budget for 2015/16. Having listened to the many voices of residents about the proposed closure of four public toilets, the administration have decided to postpone this until a proper review has taken place on the condition, use and levels of anti-social behaviour at all of the council’s public lavatories. However, to be clear, if after the review we find that certain public toilets are experiencing the levels of abuse and anti-social behaviour that forced us to consider the closure in the first place, there will be no other option but to close those facilities. It would also be interesting to see if the organisations and businesses that have made their views heard would consider coming forward as sponsors to help renovate and maintain these conveniences. I am pleased to announce that following the Oracle question night at Café Masala, one particular idea put forward really struck home, and I have started to develop a project which is summarised below:

Make Southend Green, plant a tree in 2015/16 This campaign will include ensuring that new housing developments include tree planting in their plans, encourage private donations for planting trees with commemorative plaques attached, and a publicity drive to have tree planting legacies written into wills.

22

T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E

Southend-on-Sea roundabouts with planting sponsorships should also have more stringent conditions of maintenance to avoid neglect and we need to promote further adoption of roundabouts not already covered. Street “twinning” across the borough could also be introduced to offer spare plants and horticultural knowledge along with“Friends of”groups for parks and public spaces. Property owners and tenants across the borough who fail to keep their front gardens maintained and clear of rubbish/junk will incur penalties for non-clearance.

Urgent tree planting Future projects include urgent tree planting on Southend Cliffs to prevent any more landslides/erosion, and installing porous paving under street trees to promote their long term health. As these improvements take place we can create a photographic record of beautiful plantings in the town, both public and private, promoting the image of Southend-on-Sea as a green and clean town. I remain forward thinking and it is necessary to continue seeking ideas about savings/ revenues to deliver the funding gap imposed by the government. Therefore I would welcome from residents any thoughts, no matter how minor they might seem.“It only takes one to make a difference”. Please email me at cllrwoodley@southend.gov.uk Cllr Ron Woodley Leader of Southend-on-Sea Borough Council

Essex Police spreading the word Essex Police are engaging even further with people in Southend with the launch of a free community messaging service designed to give local residents up-to-date crime information, news and advice.

Police clamp down on unpaid fines

T

he police have been clamping down on unpaid fines across Southend recently, with a targeted operation designed to catch those who have been convicted of unpaid council tax and motoring offences. The project, codenamed Operation Society, was carried out by teams of Special constables, who executed a series of warrants across the area. The fines all related to outstanding court orders, with the strategic approach designed to clear a number of warrants in one weekend. Assistant Chief Officer of Specials (ACO) Derek Hopkins, who was overseeing the project in Southend, spoke of the importance of the Special constabulary in carrying out this type of work: “It is of benefit to Essex police because it is an additional resource to carry out a task that possibly wouldn’t have been done otherwise,” he explained. “It is also good for members of the public to see the additional resources on the street. It is also good for people in the community to see that those people who are not complying with the orders of the courts – that is to pay their fines – are being dealt with.”

Local officers are using the Essex Community Messaging (ECM) service to deliver timely information across email and text or voice messages, covering everything from crime appeals to updates on local issues. This tailored service allows you to select the information you want and how you want to receive it, giving you the latest updates on the subjects that affect you most, as well as details of how to report crime and feedback with information. Whether you live or work in Southend, you can select the location that you want to be kept updated on. ECM will also be used to publicise local community meetings, including the ongoing series of Street Meets, in which members of the public can have an informal chat with police or share any concerns or issues they may have. The meetings will continue to place at various points in the area, with details available on the Essex Police website. To sign up for ECM in Southend, visit www.essexcommunitymessaging.org. Oracle Gardening

How to create the ‘WOW’ factor in your garden design

C

olour: This is the simplest way to create big impact for a modest outlay. Paint a wall a bright zingy colour and add vibrant planting to create a backdrop to your garden that screams ‘look at me!’ Large coloured fibreglass (GRP) planters also make a bold statement. They can be bought ‘off the shelf’ in various finishes and colours or manufactured to your exact specifications. To enhance the impact of your planting, stick to a couple of colours and remember that it is not just flowers that add colour to a planting scheme – there are many deep, rich coloured foliage plants to choose from. We frequently use Perspex in our designs to add a year-round block of colour. Perspex panels are easy to install on timber posts and can be used in a variety of situations, such as a free standing feature amongst planting, to create an instant explosion of colour. Using opaque Perspex screens can help to divide a space, while a translucent coloured panel allows you to layer the garden, setting apart areas of planting and other features while still keeping them visible.

Scale Instant dynamics are created when you start playing with scale in a garden. Oversized furniture, giant leafy plants, sweeping pathways – all add a sense of drama to a design. Work with your

32

T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E

surroundings: if your garden has a large tree juxtapose it with something less imposing, such as an archway, to draw the eye gently across the space rather than focusing solely on the largest single mass.

Repetition Use repetition to emphasise a feature. A series of box balls installed at intervals through a planting scheme can create unity and balance. Used well this technique can lend weight to a design and is worth employing whenever possible as it will help to reinforce your choice of materials or plants.

Materials When we use two materials that have different properties in proximity to each other it creates an unexpected contrast that can be quite striking. Mix steel with grass, decking with paving or coloured glass chips with timber to give your design both elegance and punch.

recipe of the month For the frosting:

In the Kitchen with Judy Barden

25g/1oz dark chocolate plus 1 tbsp grated 25g/1oz soft butter 50g/2oz icing sugar 1 tbsp cocoa powder 1 tsp semi-skimmed milk 100g/4oz light cream cheese 100g/4oz quark

1. Heat the oven to 180c/fan 160/gas 4. Line a 12 hole muffin tin with decorative muffin cases. Tip the flour into a mixing bowl. Add the cocoa, baking powder, sugar and almonds, then make a well in the centre. Beat the eggs with the yoghurt and vanilla and pour into the dry mixture along with the butter and oil. Stir with a large metal spoon until combined. 2. Divide the mixture between the paper cased and bake for 15-20 mins until well risen and a skewer comes out clean. Remove and cool on a rack.

Lighter Chocolate Cupcakes

T

hese cupcakes have much less fat and sugar than regular chocolate cupcakes and the frosting is made with light cream cheese and quark. They still taste good and will keep for up to 3 days in the fridge. Enjoy!

3. To make the frosting, melt the chocolate in a bowl set over a pan of simmering water (do not let the bowl touch the water). Remove from the heat and leave to cool slightly. Meanwhile put the butter, icing sugar, cocoa and milk in a bowl and beat until smooth ( you can do this with an electric whisk or wooden spoon ). Beat in the cream cheese and quark and then add the cooled melted chocolate. Pipe or swirl the frosting over each cake and then scatter with a little grated chocolate.

Talking Newspaper Free weekly audio service for visually impaired people

T

he Southend-on-Sea Talking Newspaper is a free, weekly, audio, Southend area news service for Visually Impaired People (their VIPs).

Keep up with the News Their aim is to help those who cannot read a newspaper for themselves to keep up with everything going on around them, the good, the not so good, and hopefully, the interesting. Oh yes, and probably the irritating items as well because most people can usually find something in the news that they don’t agree with, but better to know about it even so. In addition, every six weeks, there is an extra magazine edition bringing feature articles from a wider range of publications. The recordings

are sent out on USB drives – memory sticks – or on CDs for those who prefer that option. Having said that they are so convinced that the USB format is generally easier and simpler to use for most people that they are prepared to provide a USB player for those who have not got one or have no access to a computer. They record on Thursday evenings and the USB drives or CDs are sent out in zipped plastic wallets, post free, to their listeners. The discs are posted out on Fridays so that they are normally received on Saturday mornings. The postal wallets have a reversible address card to enable them to be easily posted back to them. It is a free service and there is no postage to pay. All that is asked of their listeners is that they do make sure that wallets and USBs or CDs are returned to the Talking Newspaper as quickly as possible to keep their costs down.

Funded by our efforts The Talking Newspaper is a registered charity (# 280590) run entirely by volunteers who read and record articles from local newspapers, funded by their own efforts - but you can help if you wish. So, do you know someone who can no longer read a newspaper but who would like to keep up to date with whatever is going on in the town? If so please contact either the Secretary Eric on 01702 554536 or Chairman Ron on 01702 585788

Modern Foreign Languages 2

014 GCSE results in Modern Foreign Languages were the barometer by which we started to look to the future. We had our best ever results in 2014, at 81.8% A*- C, compared with a national pass rate of 69.7% with the predictions for this year’s grades being even higher still. We are understandably proud of our students. The new school year brought a fresh cohort of excellent students to the doors of the Modern Foreign Languages department, along with equally supportive parents, and that has meant that the department has gone from strength to strength and made teaching students, in all year groups, a real pleasure. There was also a change in delivery in all language lessons with students being taught solely in target language with a more interactive feel to the lessons. This has made a huge difference to the engagement

of the students and their ability to speak in target language. The level of enthusiasm and commitment shown by pupils at Shoeburyness High School towards their language learning is boundless. As a faculty of teachers, we are prouder than ever of their achievements and commitments to expanding their knowledge of language and the world around, including an ‘all year groups’ trip to Lille’s beautiful Christmas Market in December 2014.

First trip abroad For some students, this was their first trip abroad; for others it was their first trip without their parents, whilst for some more-seasoned travellers, it was a day out exploring a town that they had not visited before. For everyone, it was a great day out. All 110 students that went on the trip were excellently behaved and really did themselves, their families and the school proud – even the French Passport Control officers stopped me to tell me what a refreshing change it was to have such a well-behaved group of children through their building! It is not just in the classroom that this enthusiasm has been evident, either. The door to the MFL office is like a swing door, waving open and closed with a large number of students coming to share experiences of using languages at home, on holiday and teaching their parents! Older students come over to get help

with their exam work and to talk about their future plans, involving languages, with younger students coming in to try out their questioning skills in French and Spanish. ¡Hola! Bonjour! And a number of other greetings in wide range of languages can be heard in the corridors as the MFL staff walk by.

Language GCSE’s The department actively encourages students with language capabilities, other than French and Spanish, to take qualifications in their first or second language, where there is one available. In 2014, we had students sit language GCSEs including Guajarati and Polish and A levels in Russian and Arabic. All students were able to secure B or higher grades in their exams, showing the level of commitment that they have to their language studies and the ability that our students have in languages. Extra-curricular clubs have also been flourishing.Year 7 & 8 have been very enthusiastic in turning up for the Franspañol Cookery Club. The aim of the club is to introduce pupils to cookery from around the world, with the main focus on French and Spanish cooking. They have successfully made a range of foods from Patatas Bravas to Quatre Quarts aux Pommes. It opened their eyes to using another language in a very different way and to seeing how French and Spanish link in different ways to English. Year 9 have been studying foreign language films and are currently working through project work based on ‘Les Choristes’and‘Voces Inocentes’.This has engaged their understanding of the world, civil war, and social issues in other countries. They will be engaged in film making themselves before the end of the year.

Full steam ahead! Year 10 are full steam into their controlled assessments. Their engagement with this has been encouraging, with many of them coming in before

and after school to work independently on their written and spoken pieces to improve them. Their grades are looking good and we are very proud of their achievements, so far. Some students have already achieved As and A*s in their work which is excellent so early in the course. Year 11 have just finished their mocks. Again, over 80% of them scored A*- C. I fully expect this number to increase when the results come in in August. Our students really are Striving for Excellence. Mrs Michelle La Roche Head of Modern Foreign Languages

Shoeburyness Revision Academy is now open! Over the next 4 months we’ll be embarking on “The Big Push” towards the examinations with a massive range of after-school, weekend and holiday revision sessions in all subjects for A level and GCSE success. Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas DQG &KULV LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW his approach is a major

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
