Rooftop Dining A

modern dining room with stunning, panoramic views provides the perfect setting in which to savour the skills of new Head Chef Michael Walker and his brigade at 1935 Rooftop Restaurant & Bar. Sitting atop the landmark Holiday Inn at London Southend Airport, is a mixture of discerning business travellers and local foodies, attracted by Walker’s modern take on British classics. The Oracle caught up with Micky to find out why the 1935 is one of the hottest tickets - or should that be plates? - in town.

As easy as MBC - Modern British Classics The new menu is composed of “lots of those much loved British Classics, but with a modern twist – so fresh and exciting, but homely and comforting at the same time,”explains the 52-year old who has worked at the prestigious 5-star Royal Garden Hotel, London and The Grand in Brighton,“I am also keen to use as many local, seasonal ingredients from suppliers here in Essex as possible.”

Roast Fig and Goats Cheese Tortellini in a creamy sauce,”says Micky, adding:“Of course people love our fish dishes – Home Smoked Haddock with Saffron Potato Salad, Crispy Quail Egg and Haddock Chowder, or the Beetroot Cured Salmon with Rye bread, fresh Beetroot Salad and Dill Dressing.” Amongst the mains, Micky’s roasted rump and slow-braised, pressed shoulder of lamb is proving to be as popular a duo as Ant and Dec. Served with Dauphinoise potato (layered white and sweet potatoes), seasonal vegetables and drizzled with a red wine jus, it is not surprising to see – and taste – why. It is delicious. Alongside a variety of steaks, Micky has introduced game to the menu, “Whilst it’s in season, we’ve got

Firm favourites with customers amongst the tempting starter selection are the “succulent Ham Hock Ballantine served with Red Onion Marmalade, Watercress Purée and Brioche is very popular, as is the

Venison Steak on the menu and it is proving to be really popular. I think with so much cookery on TV, people are more willing to try things a little outside their normal comfort zone. And after all, venison is the meat of kings. Ours is served 28-day aged and cooked to your liking before being served with home-made chips, Portobello mushrooms & grilled Roma tomato. It’s super healthy and the flavour is unbelievable! Henry VIII would certainly approve.” Being a seaside town, seafood is well represented Home smoked Haddock with Saffron Potato Salad, Crispy Quail and Egg & Haddock Chowder is a highlight of the starter menu. Amongst the main courses you will find a Hake Wellington – seasoned succulent fish is wrapped in Savoy Cabbage leaf that has been covered with Mushroom Duxelle then wrapped in light puff pastry and baked to perfection, before being served with curly kale, seafood cream and chorizo-infused oil. Pudding fans will love the Mango Charlotte. Set your taste buds for ‘Heaven on a spoon’ as they experience Sweet Mango Chutney and Raspberry Panna Cotta served with Strawberry and Cracked Black Pepper Compote. For those who prefer a ‘Yes, Yes, Yes’ setting, the divine Chocolate Truffle Torte finished with Winter Berry Compote really hits the spot… The customer comes first at 1935, as Micky explains: “Whether you’d prefer a simpler dish, have special dietary requirements or just fancy something that’s not on the menu, please just ask. As long as you give us prior warning we will do everything we can to accommodate you and ensure you have a great visit.”

Private Dining If you are planning a truly special event, whether business or pleasure, 1935 Rooftop Restaurant & Bar has a discreet and stylish private dining room. It comes complete with an exclusive terrace overlooking the airport – perfect for enjoying al fresco drinks and complimenting the ‘James Bond’ experience as you look over the location made famous in ‘Goldfinger’. Park your car overnight for FREE and take a taxi home Anyone visiting the 1935 Rooftop Restaurant & Bar can park for free whilst they dine. However, given that it is easy to go out for dinner with the very best of intentions but then enjoy a cheeky glass or two, the Holiday Inn offers free overnight parking, so you can fully enjoy your evening before taking a taxi home. All you need to do is pop into the hotel when you come back the following day to collect your vehicle and have your ticket validated. The 1935 Rooftop Restaurant & Bar - a reference to the year that airport opened as a municipal airport for the public - is also open daily for breakfast and lunch.

Mum’s the Word Make your mother’s day with The Royals

M

other’s Day, on Sunday 30th March, is the perfect excuse to spoil your mum rotten. And there’s no better place to pick up the perfect present, or treat her to a shopping spree and lunch, than The Royals Shopping Centre.

Over the years gemstones have come to represent particular months, making them ideal for commemorating important family events. At Sarah Beth Jewellers you’ll find an extensive range of earrings, necklace or ring made with your mother’s gemstone and the latest designs from Trollbeads, Citizen and Hot Diamonds.

The bright and bustling heart of Southend’s High Street, The Royals offers an exciting blend offamous-name stores and independent boutiques, making it the ideal destination for serious retail therapy whilst snugly protected from the elements by the spectacular glass-domed roof.

How often have you heard a busy, hard-pressed mum say there aren’t enough hours in the day? As Mothering Sunday is all about making time for someone special, a fine watch or clock from Tik Tok could be just what you’re looking for.

Unique Pieces

Designers at affordable prices

For mums of all ages, jewellery always makes a wonderful present to show you care. So a visit to Pandora to check out their exquisitely hand -finished jewellery is a must. Always hugely popular are Pandora’s signature bracelets, which give you the opportunity to create unique pieces, from their extensive selection of charms.

Of course, if you’re taking your mum out for the evening and you both have “nothing to wear”, you’ve found the perfect excuse to visit The Royals. TK-Maxx offers designer labels at affordable prices. With a huge range for every possible occasion - located over two floors - plus a unique selection of gift items, there’s plenty to pick for the mum who loves to party, garden or cook! If she loves the outdoors or is sporty - like Sochi superstar, Jenny Jones - then make a bee-line for Animal and X-Isle. Just a few steps away you can explore the fabulous fashions in Primark. For the style conscious mum (not forgetting a treat for you) then visit Miss Wish Boutique. It’s a fashionista’s paradise, stocking the latest fashions and ontrend looks, plus celebrity-inspired collections. Mother’s Day is also a great way to get mum’s preparations for summer well under way.

Debenhams is an ideal starting point for all her fashion and beauty needs. And while you’re there, don’t forget to pop in to see what travel deals and destinations the lovely Virgin Holidays girls have available. Dedicated followers of fashion are especially well served at Debenhams, with the hottest catwalk trends transferring to the High Street, you’ll find blooming florals and the brightest of brights on the expansive womenswear floor.

The ground floor is simply scent-sational – offering discerning shoppers fragrances from the likes of Thierry Mugler, Chanel and Christian Dior. Wayward sons can kiss and make-up with mum by visiting the cosmetics department and asking the superhelpful, glamorous assistants to put together a gift package from great brands; Clinique, Elizabeth Arden and Benefit.

Spa-vellous! For the lady who likes to be pampered, The Royals is spa-vellous! How about a gift voucher for Toni & Guy, or Supercuts, so she can treat herself to a new hairdo, or perhaps a massage, facial or pedicure at Lashious? After all that shopping, it’s essential to take time out and enjoy a spot of lunch. BB’s Coffee and Muffins, as the name suggests, specialises in premium coffee and freshly-baked muffins. It also serves a delicious range of hot wraps, sandwiches and toasties, plus refreshing cold drinks. For the perfect cappuccino and slice of cake before you hit the shops again, Utopia, will revitalise you.

Costa Coffee is ideally located as a place to stop and watch the world go by or meet up with friends and family to enjoy breakfast, light lunch or some nibbley-gorgeous snacks.

Panoramic Views Whether you want a sandwich, wrap or one of its signature submarines, Subway will make a healthy snack just the way you like it. Alternatively, take the escalator to Debenhams’ top floor and enjoy a hot meal and panoramic views of Southend’s famous seafront. Before you go, there’s just one more essential item to purchase before heading home to wrap your gifts – a card. The Card Factory stocks a huge selection of greetings cards - and gifts that are perfectly priced for pocket-money shoppers - plus wrapping paper, ribbon and more. The Royals has all the shops you need for your perfect shopping trip and the best Mother’s Day ever.

Oracle Hair & Beauty

Fabulous at 40 I

f you missed all the hullaballoo recently, you’ll be relieved to know that Kate Moss has still got ‘it’. How to look fabulous when you hit the big ‘four oh’ hit the headlines when the UK’s favourite supermodel turned 40. OK, not all of us possess the genes and cheekbones that have made La Moss one of the world’s most beautiful women but you can ease the passage of time and look sensational without spending a fortune.

Fishy business Cod Liver Oil is extremely beneficial for dry, ageing skin, as well as joints, hair, nails and digestive system. Take it daily.

Making up is not hard to do Use a primer, as it gives a lovely smooth base for makeup, hides uneven colour and blemishes. Foundation is a must for anyone over 35 who wants to hide uneven tone and bring lost light back to their face.

Fringe benefits

Here comes the Sun

Fringes are very youthful, not just because they’re fun and cool, but they also cover lines, wrinkles and pigmentation on your forehead. If you're worried about it looking harsh, get your stylist to cut into the line to soften it and flatter your face shape. As we get older, our hair becomes thinner and limper, so pick shampoos and conditioners that create the illusion of thicker, healthier hair.

Sunblock is still the most important and effective anti-ageing treatment. Make sure yours protects against UVA (primarily ageing) and UVB (primarily burning and cancer-causing) rays. Use one whenever you'll be spending extended periods outdoors, whatever the weather.

Stub it out

Not your daughter’s. Being 40 still means you can be naughty but remember, there are limits…

Smokers' skin ages faster. Nicotine causes blood vessels to narrow, which then impairs blood flow. As a result, your skin is deprived of oxygen and other nutrients that help it to stay young looking. The 4,000 chemicals in a single cigarette also damage collagen and elastin, the two main fibres that help skin retain elasticity. Even if you can't see the damage now, you will. Kate, sweetie, take note...

Oracle Cycling

Middle aged men in lycra I

n male circles, middle age normally represents gaining weight, losing fitness, refusing to change and being very grumpy. This condition is known as the Manopause. There will be a time when the very big numbers on the bathroom scales force men into making a decision… get fit or stay fat!

New shiny bikes were purchased and at weekends the group would canter around the leafy, flat lanes of Essex clad in extraordinary colours, scaring local wildlife…….However, the idea of cycling from Land’s End to John O’Groats initially seemed absurd when it was first casually discussed.

For a group of lifelong friends from Thorpe Bay and Leigh, all the wrong side of 50, this dilemma loomed large. Their glory days on the football and rugby pitches of Southend were distant memories, their hard won trophies gathering dust in attics and garages. When they swapped their shin pads for the sofa and their gum shields for Fruit ‘n Nut they were initiating the first stages of the dreaded manopause.

Impressive Challenge

Mindful of their enlarged girths, some tried marathon running which of course helped them lose weight but in many cases led to injuries too dreadful to describe in a family magazine. So the trainers were discarded and the biscuit tin was re-instated. Until the Eureka moment……which occurred while sitting outside the Angel Inn, when some of the group noticed a Middle Aged Man In Lycra thundering past the pub on a seriously slick looking bicycle. He looked fit, healthy and euphoric and this garishly attired athlete set off some curious minds. The friends would later conclude that cycling offered the option of getting fit and having a good time with your pals, just like the old days playing football!! Eureka indeed!!

28

T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E

Gradually, as logistics for such an epic ride were investigated and as the cycling bug bit even deeper, the group decided to take on the challenge of cycling from one end of the country to the other, over 2 weeks in June this year. All arrangements have now been completed, work leave has been arranged, permission from spouses has been granted and a charity partner has been decided upon. That just leaves the fitness bit to sort out….more to follow in the coming months, and very importantly information about the charity Prostate Cancer that we intend to support through sponsorhip.

Oracle Security

Do you know your Security ‘ABC’ ?

I

t’s really important to know your security ‘ABC’. Over the forthcoming months we’ll be giving you some FREE security tips to help make you feel safe, secure, protected & confident. Most of us don’t like spending money on things that don’t really give us something immediately ‘tangible’ in return. We ‘Brits’ consider security as a ‘grudge buy’ & leave it until something happenswhich of course means we become victims of ever increasing crime ‘statistics’. If you think you’ve done all you can to secure your property & belongings you might want to run through our ‘ABC Checklist’ to make sure you’re really ‘on the ball’. We’ve numbered them according to their importance but will cover one subject at a time over forthcoming issues so keep your eyes open.

A} B} C}

1. Locks 2. Safes/Security Boxes 3. Alarm 4. CCTV 5. Laminated Glass/Bandit Film 6. Grilles, Bars & or Roller Shutters

1. Locks: Your locks will be the first point of attack so it’s vitally important that you’ve got the very best. It might be surprising to know that around 80% of British homes have ‘Euro Cylinder’ locks installed that offer very poor security.

36

T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E

These cylinders aren’t very strong at all and are prone to attack by snapping, drilling and other methods and can result in a burglar getting in to your premises within 10 to 15 seconds! If that isn’t SCARY enough it should also be shocking to hear that Insurance Companies won’t pay out if you’re burgled and you have the wrong types of locks (Ouch)! That’s why it’s always best to check your insurance documentation or call them direct as they often specify a particular type of lock. New ‘TS007’ Security standards are on the way so make sure you’re covered. Another dreadful statistic is that a disturbing amount of people do not lock their doors properly, thinking that ‘pulling the door to’ is sufficient; in short… IT’S NOT! This casual approach has led to a marked increase in burglary across the country, especially in Essex, and is very easy to remedy if you simply deadlock your door. Don’t be a victim follow the ‘ABC’ system Next article : Part2: Safes/Security Boxes

Cylinders with snap lines can be attacked again beyond the shear line which releases the cam and gives access. Pour the batter into the prepared tin and bake for 30 minutes. Reduce the heat to 170c/fan 150/ gas 3 ½ and bake for a further 35-40 minutes until a skewer comes out almost clean. Don’t worry if a bit sticky. Remove from the oven and leave to cool in the tin then transfer to a serving plate.

It’s Back! Geneva Motor Show 2014 T

his year marks the 84th Geneva International Motor Show, which for the second year running we will be lucky enough to be visiting. From March 4th the show will host 65 press conferences over two days prior to the event being open to general public and for the third consecutive year will be announcing car of the year just before the press days begin. There will be 250 exhibitors presenting their latest offerings over 7 exhibition halls totalling 110,000 square meters, which last year attracted 690,000 visitors. In a survey carried out on 1,034 of last year’s visitors, most of them were ‘enthusiastic working males who love cars.’ The sections of this year’s motor show are as follows: Motor cars and chassis with 3, 4 or more wheels, electric and alternative powered cars. Special bodywork motor cars, design, engineering and refined cars. Accessories and parts for motor cars. Original equipment manufacturers. Workshop installations for repair and maintenance. SsangYong will be displaying a diesel/electric hybrid SUV concept XLV car. Vauxhall will debut

the Astra VXR Extreme – a lighter and faster version of the Astra VXR hot hatch. Geneva Motor Show will see the unveiling of the BMW 4 Series gran coupe – the five door version of the 2 door 4 series and a Skoda Octavia-sized Vision C five door coupe will also be displayed. Skoda will be informing visitors of the new Superb and Fabia designs. This event is massive and if you are fanatical about cars we would definitely recommend you paying a visit! Advertorial

From ICT to Computing T he Government is making changes to education which mean that, as from September 2014, Information and Communications Technology (ICT) will no longer exist! Out goes ICT and in comes Computing. Not only does the name change but so does much of the content. With the introduction of computer science, there will be much more about programming and a far greater emphasis on giving students knowledge and understanding about computation and digital technology. What is Computing? Whereas ICT is more or less about when and how to use computers, Computing teaches pupils about their design and how they are best employed. Studying Computing will develop pupils’ ability to think like computer scientists and help them to think through situations in a ‘computational’ way. They will be encouraged to deconstruct problems and then use abstraction, algorithms and patterns to help find solutions. 62

Computing can engage all students

Computing applies to virtually every aspect of life, so it can be explicitly tied to a whole variety of student interests. Many students are already extremely familiar with digital devices or are passionate about virtual design. The teaching of Computing will nurture these student interests and enhance their sense of engagement with the world around them.

Pedagogically, computer programming has the same relation to studying computing as playing an instrument does to studying music or painting does to studying art. In each case, even a small amount of hands-on experience adds immensely to life-long appreciation and understanding, even if the student does not continue programming, playing, or painting as an adult. Although becoming an expert programmer, a violinist or an artist demands much time and talent, we still want to expose every student to the joys of being creative, for example by having students design and write programs that

control digital devices or robots, create physics and biology simulations, or compose music. Students will want to learn to use whatever fundamental concepts there are that make these exciting things happen. “Computing enables students to be not just educated users of technology, but the innovators capable of designing new computers and programs”: Michael Gove, Secretary of State for Education. Exciting and Innovative Programme of Study At a glance here are some of the computing strands that Key Stage 3 students will study from September 2014: Learn the basics of computers and how they work Be introduced to the basic Python syntax and look at selection, loops, functions, lists and classes Undertake creative projects that involve selecting, using, and combining multiple applications Create, reuse, revise and repurpose digital information and content with attention to design, intellectual property and audience “The digital revolution is far more significant than the invention of writing or even of printing." Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!
