Afternoon Tea? W

hat could be more quintessentially British than the taking of tea? Popularised by the Victorians and Edwardians it is still to this day an occasion that epitomises, style and elegance. Eager to uphold this fine tradition, the Holiday Inn Southend has launched its own, thoroughly modern take on the classic Afternoon Tea. As can be expected of such a striking landmark, located near London Southend Airport, the hotel offers sandwiches, scones and cakes but with a 21st century twist, as Rohit Singh, Operations Manager explains:“Michael Walker our Executive Chef has forged an outstanding reputation at the 1935 Restaurant and Bar for his modern take on English food, so it was natural that we would want to offer an experience that also references the past, but is wholly up to date.” Rohit is also keen to point out that, much as the sheer pleasure of relaxing over delicious, fine finger sandwiches that have been sumptuously filled with locally-sourced ingredients, fresh scones that have just been taken out of the oven and are still warm to the touch, and a small fleet 6

of pretty, intricate and exquisite cakes and pastries, the quality of the drink itself will be second to none.

Bread and Butter “What made the whole concept of afternoon tea possible from as far back as 1840 - when Anna, 7th Duchess of Bedford grew tired of always feeling hungry at around 4 o’clock every day, so asked for a tray of tea, bread and butter and cake to be brought to her - was Britain’s relationship with India and its tea plantations.

Darjeeling is often called‘the champagne of teas’ due its quality and indulgent nature. All it takes is a single sip and I am transported back to the peace and tranquillity of the highlands where it is grown and the stunning views across to the Himalayas. It also has a wonderful, pale gold hue, matched by a delicate, floral aroma. There is also a subtle hint of muscatel grapes in the leaves, which all combines to make this a lively, refreshing tea that is perfect on its own or with a dash of fresh milk.”

Traditional English Rohit has selected the renowned producer Twinings to supply leaf Darjeeling, along with other blends and flavours from its ‘Ritual’ selection, including; Traditional English, Russian Caravan and Signature Earl Grey. Of course, to make your visit even more memorable and luxurious, you might like to savour a glass of every day in the 1935 Restaurant and Bar, which champagne whilst you dine. enjoys panoramic views over the airport. You can enjoy the Holiday Inn Afternoon Tea

Stunning Location

“It is a stunning location in which discerning customers can come and relax with friends or family, or simply enjoy some quiet time on their own and let the world go by, watching the planes and their passengers come and go,”says Rohit. “Our charming, attentive staff will make your visit truly special, in what is one of the most desirable places to indulge in a fine British tradition.” To make an Afternoon Tea reservation at the Holiday Inn Southend, please call 08450 921 935.

works included The French Lieutenant’s Woman, later made into an award-winning film starring Meryl Streep, was remembered with a plaque on his former Leigh home, after his death in 2005 at age 79. So, too, was 19th century mountaineer Edward Whimper, who lived for a time along Clifftown Parade in Southend, near the once wonderful, long since gone Bandstand, and who died in 1911.

Southend’s forgotten famous

H

There are a few more permanent reminders and tributes around our borough, to famous folk who came to visit or to entertain, but it seems to the writer of this Oracle article that many deserving cases and important opportunities to honour our own citizens have been missed or rejected. Too late, now, to make amends? Surely not.

EKCO employed thousands For a start, from my own list of deserving recipients, how about Eric Cole? Yes, the man who lived in Beedell Avenue, Westcliff, the daring, challenging, risk-taking man who founded the E.K. Cole empire, the famous EKCO that employed thousands in this town of ours through the years and decades.

ARDLY a week passes without seeing or hearing about Helen Mirren and her links to Southend, having been born in London, moved here in her early days, then educated at St Bernard’s, at the foot of the ladder of life that led her to the very heights. He died in 1966, at that age when most folk are Last month she was presented with a Bafta about to retire, having left a legacy of caring, Fellowship for her outstanding services to acting. Author John Fowles

But there’s nothing, no public plaque or display here in Southend, far as I know, to publicly record or honour her achievements as one of us. As a longtime Southendian of whom so many fellow Southendians are proud.

Too few blue plaques Sadly, shamefully, such lack of recognition is not unusual, hereabouts. This town of ours, which so many of us love and enjoy and defend against any criticism from outside, displays merely a few blue plaques in honour of the famed or the fearless Author the late John Fowles, who was educated at Alleyn Court Prep and whose M AY 2 0 1 4

daring, sharing and a reputation that reached across much of the world. Surely there should be a permanent reminder of him and of his roots and of the enormous and influential role he played in this town? Then there’s the role played in cricket by another late son of Southend, the great Trevor Bailey, who tragically died in a house fire in Westcliff three years ago (FEB 2011) aged 87. Barnacle Bailey, as he became nicknamed, first played cricket while at Alleyn Court School, to which he returned as a teacher after attending Cambridge University. He made his debut for Essex in 1946 and as a Test cricketer in 1949. His name and his incredible achievements were known across much of the world. Where, then, is any permanent reminder and tribute to so incredible a sporting star here in Southend?

Truly handsome devil It is, though, in and from the world of show business and entertainment that one finds so many famous names with links to Southend. Did you know that the late, truly great, actor Michael Wilding was born in Leigh in 1912? Ah, yes, Michael Charles Gauntlet Wilding, often written about as a truly handsome devil, had his roots here and, in 1933, got a job as a commercial artist in a London film studio on the way to eventual stardom. Actor Philip Latham

Sportsman Barnacle Bailey

And then there was Peggy Mount, born here, educated here, stepping out on the road to fame in a concert party at Westcliff’s Palace Theatre. She went on to roles in the West End , on TV and in films. She died in 2001, aged 86. This cast of contenders for posthumous honour is by no means yet complete. Do you remember actor Philip Latham? Of course you do. He was born in Westcliff back in February 1929 and found fame on stage, on television and in films. Also born in Westcliff, a decade ahead of Philip, was David Nixon, who went to Westcliff High. What a wonderful magician he became, a regular on television, sadly lost to us in 1978. Our readers – you kind folk – may well have your own thoughts and ideas about individuals of Southend who surely ought to be remembered by some permanent display in some prominent setting. This article has mentioned but a few. They are gone, but not forgotten. By Jim Worsdale

Oracle Hair & Beauty

Scrubs up nicely A

side from raising over £8 million for charity, the recent #nomakeupselfie phenomena also laid bare the issue of facial cleansing. There are generally two camps when it comes to your morning and evening routine: old-fashioned soap-and-water or scrubbing and patting your face with all manner of lotions, milks, foaming mousses, oils, wipes and in some cases, motorized brushes. It seems the older you get, the more time you devote to combatting the inevitable. However, a good quality facial scrub can feel really therapeutic, leaving your skin feeling taut and smooth.

Here’s my advice for achieving a healthy glow.

1. Remove your makeup before you wash your face.

Many cleansers can't take off concealer or foundation completely. Use an oil-based cream, an emollient wipe, or a cleansing oil to dissolve stubborn sunscreen and makeup. Follow with lukewarm water and a 5p-sized squirt of cleanser.

2. Always wash your face after a workout to prevent breakouts, and wash excessively oily skin morning and night. For very dry or sensitive skin, stick to cleansing in the evening only.

4. No matter what kind of skin you have, make

sure it doesn't contain fragrance, which can be irritating; parabens (potentially toxic preservatives); or harsh soap (it's drying).

5. Alcohol-based toners can strip away natural oils, so use the gentlest one available to calm your skin and balance pH levels. 6. Don’t spend a king’s ransom! You can find great quality and value on the High Street or online. Boots’ Super Facialist Vitamin C + Brighten Gentle Daily Micro Polish Wash is just £9.99, while Calendula Refining Facial Scrub from Cowshedonline.com is £22. Marks and Spencer sell Bliss Pore-Perfecting Facial Polish for £24.50 and that is also highly recommended. Now you’re ready for your own-close up. And….smile!

3. Exercise boosts your circulation. So try to do as much as you can and your skin will really benefit. As will the rest of your body. 16

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas DQG &KULV LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW his approach is a major

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Oracle Culture Club

Film review: Divergent L

atest from Neil Burger (The Illusionist, Limitless) is this big screen adaptation of the best-selling novel by Veronica Roth, who co-produced.

Divided into tribes Divergent gives us a vision of a dystopian future society in a walled-in, partially derelict Chicago. In order to maintain a stable society after The Big War – oooh! – the population is divided into tribes according to their ‘natural’ characteristics and shared moral values; Candour – for honesty, Abnegation – for selflessness, Dauntless – a warrior breed, membership of which consists of lots of running about, climbing high things, and jumping on and off trains. Amity, who don’t get a look in because they’re boring, and finally Erudite: these would be your Clever Clogs. One thing we do learn about, Americans in the future is that they can’t say Erudite – the word is mangled into something which sounds like ‘EarYouDate’. Still, moving on, the plot hangs on Beatrice (Shailene Woodley), born into an Abnegation family, who joins the Dauntless clan, a choice permitted but irreversible.

All are tested to ensure their mental characteristics are appropriate for their tribe of choice, but Beatrice’s tests are inconclusive – she is, gasp, Divergent – she doesn’t fit into any one tribe, and is therefore a threat to the stability of society. But I’m telling you the plot. The best thing about this average action flick aimed squarely at the Hunger Games market (this too is the first in a trilogy) is Kate Winslet in full-on platinum blond ice-queen mode, leading the witch hunt for the Divergents. (She can’t say erudite properly either. And she’s a Brit – tsk). She’s nasty.

Love interest The obligatory love story and sledgehammer morals; Be True To Yourself! , Stand Up For What You Believe! - are laced with the inevitable chastity message – “I don’t want to go too fast” whispers the Dauntless Beatrice (now shortened to Tris) to her manly if Bambi-eye, hunk, “4” (Theo James). Yes, he’s called 4. But these are laudable goals, if clumsily conveyed - there are worse messages to be putting out there for today’s Yoof. I just wish the Yanks could talk properly. Kate’s got no excuse. by Angela Dress

Oracle Security

Are your belongings SAFE in your home or business?

F

ollowing last month’s issue where we featured ‘Know your ‘ABC’ of Security’ this month’s Free Security Advice is about the next step: Getting yourself a good safe”…

A} 1. Locks (Covered Last Month) 2. Safe/Security Boxes

B} 3. Alarm

against identity theft. Although it might be obvious, it’s important to lock up your vehicle keys too. A high percent of vehicle theft across the UK is primarily due to people not deadlocking their doors and the subsequent theft of car keys left either hanging up by the door or on the sideboard just inside the door.

C} 5. Laminated Glass/Bandit Film

With a huge range of safes & security boxes on the market the BIG question is “which one is right for me”. Getting the right safe or security box is vital, especially if you’re dealing with ‘wriggly’ insurance companies.

2. If you’ve now installed your high security locks you’re probably feeling a little safer than before but burglars can be somewhat determined so they’ll probably now ‘have a go’ at breaking a window to gain entry.

Remember NOT ALL SAFES ARE ‘SAFE’ so get your advice from a specialist who knows all that there is to know & not from a ‘general store’

4. CCTV

6. Grilles, Bars & or Roller Shutters

Once they’re in they’ll generally not take long to grab any valuables that are lying around which is why having a good quality safe is paramount. Most people think safes are only for jewellery, deeds, wills & large amounts of money & whilst this is true, you really need to secure the stuff that you might ordinarily leave scattered around such as passports, driving licenses & credit cards to help protect

Oracle Cycling

Men Utd. Y

ou may recall from a recent article in this magazine entitled “The Joys of Cycling” that a group of ten middle aged men in Lycra from Thorpe Bay and Leigh will be riding their bikes from Land’s End to John O’Groats over two weeks in June this year. In adopting Prostate Cancer UK as the most appropriate charity to compliment their brave endeavours, the group is hoping to raise a substantial amount of money to help fight this particularly underfunded cancer.

One in Eight Men Prostate cancer has become the most common cancer in men and the statistics make alarming reading. 40,000 men in the UK each year are diagnosed with this disease and 10,000 will die, that’s more than one death an hour! One in eight men will get prostate cancer and there are currently a quarter of a million men living with or after the disease. Alarmingly, 2 out of 3 males don’t know what the prostate gland does or where it is located in their bodies. The lack of general understanding of this type of cancer and how it develops means that men are generally unaware of their vulnerability to this disease, however, in 36

T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E

researching this article, it is clear that within male circles, the majority will know somebody who has been affected or has died from by prostate cancer.

Raising Awareness There is currently a nationwide media campaign at work called Men Utd, led by the comedian Bill Bailey, which is trying to raise awareness of this cancer through TV and print exposure. All monies raised by our intrepid cyclists will assist in the continuation of this campaign and contribute to further research into finding a cure. If you would like to make a modest pledge, the charity website is as follows. www.justgiving.com/sorebumbones

recipe of the month 150ml dry white wine 1.5kg mussels, scrubbed, beards removed 150ml double cream 2 tbsp chopped fresh parsley

In the Kitchen with Judy Barden

For Spiced Chips: 2 large potatoes ( about 800g) 2 tsp garam masala 1 tsp sea salt flakes 2 tbsp olive oil

Method:

1. Preheat the oven to 220c/fan 200/gas 7. Cut the potatoes into long chips, squaring off the ends. In a large bowl, mix the garam masala, salt and olive oil. Add the chips and toss to coat. Arrange in a single layer on a baking sheet lined with baking parchment and bake for 25 minutes until golden. 2. Heat the butter and oil in a large pan and cook

the leeks until soft. Stir in the spices then pour in the stock and bring to the boil, reduce and simmer for 2 minutes.

3. In a separate pan combine the white wine and

his is more of a soup than a classic Moules dish and it is great teamed with spicy chips but you can of course just dunk in some fresh bread. To anyone who hasn’t cooked mussels before, if they are open or shells cracked or broken before they are cooked and don’t close when given a sharp tap on a worktop, discard them. Rinse them well in cold water and then follow the recipe. Enjoy!

mussels, cover and bring to the boil. Shake the pan and remove the mussels, (any that haven’t opened discard) strain the liquid through a fine sieve and then add the liquid and the mussels to the pan with the stock along with the cream and warm through, tossing well.

4. Divide the soup between 4 warm bowls and scatter with parsley. Serve with the chips on the side and mayonnaise if you wish.

Oracle Motoring

Step in to the future –Tesla Model S A

t Planet Leasing we were lucky enough to drive and experience pre-launch models of the car that Top Gear Magazine have called the “Most important vehicle that we have ever tested”.

What is the Tesla Model S?

The Tesla Model S is an electric prestige hatchback which competes with the Audi A7, BMW 5 & 7 Series and other similar vehicles but in many departments the Tesla wins. The Tesla Model S is the first electric car to be what we would consider a major competitor to petrol powered vehicles. Most electric cars currently have a standard range of approximately 100 miles where as this boasts of up to 310 miles on a single charge. Furthermore the best part about this car is that the performance is outstanding, the basic model does 0-60 mph in 5.4 seconds and a top speed of 125 mph; better still, the supercharger (top of the range model) can achieve 0-60 mph in just 4.2 seconds with a top speed of 130 mph. It has 416hp which is almost 70hp more than a 46

T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E

standard Porsche 911. Believe it or not but up against the Bugatti Veyron in a race of 50 mph – 70 mph the Model S Supercharge will win. Depending on what model you go for the charge time will vary, for example, the standard vehicle will charge up to 68 miles per hour which is very impressive, but go for the Supercharger and the charge per hour is up to a phenomenal 200 miles. We genuinely believe this could be the future of motoring, especially as there are plans for Tesla to bring out a family car and hatchback equivalent of this Model S.Watch this space! Getting fit for Summer Fun

L

onger days and brighter weather mean that, at last, summer is just around the corner. If you want to look good for your holiday, then NOW is the perfect time to do something about it. Becoming fitter and healthier needn’t involve the expense of going to a gym. Instead, take yourself out and about here in Southend.

Challenging terrain Try walking or running along the seafront – start on the flat from Thorpe Bay and head towards Sea-Life Adventure. If you are feeling brave then try a more challenging terrain, such as the undulating paths and steep steps throughout the beautiful Cliff Gardens. Finding somewhere visually appealing to do your exercise is ideal as it makes the whole process more enjoyable. A word of warning though, if you constantly run on concrete or the pavement; your joints will take a real beating - use grass or the beach to run on whenever possible.

Make use of the many parks in the local area - either take a brisk walk with the dog, kick a ball around with friends or even try your hand at tennis. Many parks have playground and exercise equipment (some even have rock walls to climb) so, there’s a fabulously diverse range of ways to make getting fit fun.

World class How about exercising in your garden? Most of us spent hours running around them as children and had a great time just doing that. At least you’ll entertain the neighbours! Or if you prefer the ‘life aquatic,’ then head over and make the most of the world class swimming pool facility at Garon Park. Most importantly, whatever activity you choose, enjoy yourself whilst doing it! Remember, I offer a free consultation to anyone who is looking to make positive changes to their health and fitness.

Our seafront now has miles of wonderful, new, safe lanes for those of us who enjoy cycling, so dig out yours from the dark recesses of the garage and go for a spin with the family. 50

The Day the FIFA World Cup™ came to Shoeburyness High School

nomination was a success and she has now become fully involved in the World Cup story which culminates in a trip to Brazil in the summer of 2014.

Only a small number of staff at the school Shoeburyness High School was alerted to were aware of what was going to happen the fact that, when it was to visit Great on 12th March 2014. Britain, the first stop would be our school for a special reason. This centred around We had agreed to keep the details secret to one of our staff – Rachael O’Brien. Rachael make them a surprise for Rachael. On the works in our Excel Pathway and specialises day, 1,400 students and 100 staff were in teaching numeracy and literacy through dressed in red or white tee-shirts and the theme of football. award for her hard work within the communities of Southend. Rachael’s work was not finished, nor was that of the World Cup, as both of them were then moved into our Singleton Centre. Here pictures could be taken with the World Cup as part of the celebration event being held for various invited guests. During this event Shoeburyness High School welcomed many dignitaries from Southend and Essex councils and made sure that they had a truly memorable visit. I would like to thank everybody who supported us in helping to make this a very special day for Rachael O’Brien. Huw Williams - Deputy Headteacher

Rachael’s account: Wednesday 12th March 2014 was a very memorable day, not only for me, but the whole community of Shoeburyness. The World Cup coming to our school was something I never would have imagined and I guess will never happen again. The day itself was amazing but went by in a bit of a blur for me. Following on from the reception I was then driven to Knightsbridge in London and I spent the evening with the Coca Cola organisers where they prepared me for the following day’s Media Tour. On Thursday it was an early start and I was picked up at my hotel at 6am and taken to my first media stop which was at the Daily Mail Headquarters where I spoke live on BBC Radio. This was then followed by several stops, including Heart Radio, where I was interviewed by Emma Bunton and Jamie Theakston and bumped into Liberal Democrat leader, Nick Clegg.

The Headteacher’s account: This event was a great day for the school and the community of Shoeburyness. I was absolutely delighted for Rachael and finding out the World Cup was coming to Shoeburyness High School was really amazing because we were the first in the U.K. to receive it. Thursday afternoon I spent time at the Mark Schofield - Headteacher Southbank at an event organised by M AY 2 0 1 4

StreetGames where I was able to invite 12 young people along who regularly attend my ‘Achievement Through Football’ (ATF) sessions. They had the opportunity to participate in several football activities including the ‘Daniel Sturridge Challenge’ which was a timed event where they had to beat a projection of Daniel in a race. The young participants were given many pieces of Coca Cola memorabilia to take away with them as well as having the opportunity to have their photos taken with the World Cup and footballers Christian Karembeu and Daniel Sturridge. The following day I attended a conference in Cambridge organised by StreetGames where I got to hear about all of the other projects being run across the country and shared my experience with the attendees. The highlight of my World Cup experience so far was being invited to the Brazilian Embassy to send the World Cup off to its next location, the Netherlands. During that evening I was overwhelmed by the photos of our students displayed all around the function room. Videos of them were being displayed everywhere and it was at this point I realised what a big occasion this was. I was introduced to the Head of Coca Cola UK, Jon Woods, and was able to share the past few days’ events with him.

My World Cup journey is not over yet; I am lucky enough to have been given 2 tickets for the World Cup final in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, in July. Not only do I get to see the game but I will have the opportunity to visit a community project in Brazil that supports young people like ‘Achievement Through Football’ do here. For others, the World Cup experience is over but for me I still have lots to look forward to and am honoured to have won this award. Rachael O’Brien
