his month sees the launch of the new Oracleon-Sea (formally Leigh-on-Sea Oracle) which, due to popular demand and in celebration of 8 years successful trading, covers an additional 1200 homes. These additional areas include a further 600 homes in Leigh and 600 homes in the Southend Conservation Area. The good news for Oracle’s clients is that there will be no rate increase for this additional coverage. A reminder to all Thorpe Bay residents, the Oracle aims to highlight a ‘local issue’ each month which is open to anyone who feels they would like to bring to the public’s attention something they feel strongly about. Also, there are many features written by local people, which produces a local magazine written and supported by local people which in turn support local businesses. Look out for the Vouchers recently introduced where readers can redeem exclusive offers, see page 11. September’s competition has been kindly donated by the Cliffs Pavilion - a pair of tickets for the opening performance of CATS on Monday 7th October at 8pm.

East meets West Kip McGrath Education Centre Southend East Under New Ownership

F

ollowing Nicole's sucess in opening Kip McGrath Southend West in Hadleigh in January 2012, she bought her second Centre – Southend-East based in Hamstel Road, Southend-on-Sea. The second centre shares the same benefits of the Hadleigh Centre; runs on the latest Kip McGrath Interactive Software and has been newly refurbished to the highest standard, to make the learning experience the best it can be! Now children in the East of the Borough in Shoeburyness, Southchurch, Thorpe-Bay and Southchurch can benefit from a Kip McGrath Education.

All children receive a FREE, No-Obligation educational assessment prior to enrolment. This enables Nicole to pitch the level of tuition correctly and to identify the areas to be worked upon. All children have their own PERSONAL programme of study, allowing them to work at their own pace, learn those all important skills and to move ahead confidently. On average a student would work on six different topics in an 80 minute session. Our technology tracks attainment and progress, so children, tutors and their parents can see exactly how their child is working. All children are re-assessed after 14 sessions and progress reports given. My centres are bright, colourful and modern and staff are carefully chosen to work in Nicole's Centres. All tutors are fully qualified teachers with many years classroom teaching under their belt – unlike many of our competitors, we do not employ Instructors (non-qualified teachers) as we believe that expert tuition must be delivered by experienced professionals and

Local Issues

Foul Play D

og fouling is a major issue for many of our towns and cities in the UK. It is the most offensive type of litter which is consistently raised as a public concern and is the single biggest issue which dominates my and many of my colleagues mailbags. As the dog population sits at approximately 8 million and is only set to grow, so too is the problem with dog mess. According to figures published by the Dog Trust, for the first time in ten years a rise in dog fouling has been reported with 64% of people considering it to be the most offensive litter item, something needs to be done to tackle the problem.

Toxocariasis is an infection of the roundworm toxocara canis. The eggs of the parasite can be found in soil or sand contaminated with faeces and if swallowed, result in infection that lasts between six and 24 months. Symptoms include eye disorders, vague ache, dizziness, nausea, asthma and, in extremely rare cases, seizures/fits. Often the eggs are ingested when passed to the mouth by the hands, but this can also occur through contact with dogs or other inanimate objects including the wheels of toys and the soles of shoes. Infected soil samples are often found in play areas and as a result, Toxocariasis most commonly affects children between 18 months and five years.

Dangerous

No excuses

It is estimated that dogs produce approximately 1,000 tonnes of excrement in the UK each day. In a recent survey by Keep Britain Tidy of over 10,000 sites, dog fouling was present on 7% of these sites. Dog fouling is not only unpleasant it is dangerous. The biggest threat to public health from dog excrement is toxocariasis.

The law states specifically, that being unaware that the dog has fouled, or not having a suitable means of removing the faeces is not a reasonable excuse for failing to clean up after your dog.

SEPTEMBER 2013

It is the the responsibility of the dog owner or the person in charge of the dog to clear up any www.oraclepublications.co.uk T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E 9

dog foul left by their dog. Here in Southend, if you fail to clean up after your dog you can be issued with a Fixed Penalty Notice or face prosecution where you could be liable for a fine up to £5,000. Even though we have over 300 dog waste bins in the town and some with more severe sanctions, some dog owners still fail to clean up after their dogs. The highest level of dog fouling can be found in areas where people actually live.

Needless spending If someone fails to clean up after their dog, the council will clear dog fouling from public places that it has a legal responsibility for. Thousands of pounds are spent each year on ensuring public spaces are kept clean and this could all be so much easier if dog owners remembered the simple message to ‘Bag it, Bin it.’

If you are with someone you know and they allow their dog to foul you may feel safe telling them that they shouldn’t. However, if you do not know the person it is important not to confront them if you think that your personal safety might be at risk.

Sadly it’s becoming a recurring sight to see Unrealistic bags of dog mess hanging from tree branches, fences, gates, basically anywhere but in a bin. It’s a two step process and one which all dog Fines in the form of Fixed Penalty Notices owners need to be on board with. After all we where issued do act as a strong deterrent. To all know that the Dog Poo Fairy doesn’t exist issue a Fixed Penalty Notice a dog needs to be caught in the act. It would require an army of Many people find dog fouling offensive and enforcement officers to stand on every street want to do something about it. If you feel corner which is unrealistic. strongly that dog fouling should not be To enable fines to be given the council tolerated on our streets. requires intelligence from residents. This can be done anonymously by calling 01702 215 000. Dog are habitual creatures and it will be at certain times of the day when dog fouling occurs.

We can all play our part to stamp out the most common form of anti-social behaviour to ensure that Southend remains a clean, safe and pleasant environment to live and work in.

P

ainted furniture is undergoing something of a revival at the moment. I am being asked more and more frequently about this so I thought I’d share with you how easy it can be to transform a piece of unloved furniture into an enviable design piece. Whatever the item may be as long as it is wooden the same principals apply. Firstly, go over the item with some fine grade sandpaper to ‘key’ the surface. This gives the paint something to cling to and is an essential part of the process, don’t be tempted to just stick the paint on and hope for the best, it might look great to start with but it will easily scratch or worse, peel off.

Once the primer has completely dried you can apply your chosen topcoat. I would recommend using an Eggshell finish which is low sheen but will be really resiliant to knocks and scratches. The first coat gives you a good base and then a second coat gives you beautiful depth of colour and a perfect finish.

Attention to detail Whilst neutral colours work well on furniture, using deeper tones or bright colours can give a room a real pop of colour that can sometimes pull a scheme together and act as focal point. a great

Some include, of my favourites Little Green Paint Co’s Dark Lead, Farrow & Ball’s Railings, Arsenic and Green me, Blue. Trust colour should be embraced, we all need a little more Apply a primer Once you’ve removed any dust or dirt you can colour in our lives sometimes. apply a primer. This will help to ensure that By Samantha Gundy resin from any knots in the wood do not cause discolouration of the final colour. Farrow & Ball do a primer and undercoat in one that comes in a variety of shades to work with your top coat. These create the dilemma of which style is the most flattering - particularly for any man past the first flush of youth. Retailers say that, while knee-length shorts are the most popular, the trendiest look is half-length - the very style that fashion commentators say is most difficult for men to pull off.

How short is too short? I

t’s the dilemma dogging fashionforward chaps up and down the country, as the warm weather looks set to remain until September – just how short, is too short, for shorts? Even the Prime Minister, David Cameron, has been dragged into the debate. He was praised by some sections of the press for sporting a pair of knee-length khaki shorts, teamed with a denim short-sleeved shirt and suede loafers while on holiday in the Algarve. Unfortunately, ‘Call me Dave’ may have been responding to the fashionistas who criticised him in 2011 for wearing 1980s-style shorts, deeming them too short and somewhat boyish.

Increased popularity The conundrum for men of all walks of life, is created by the sheer variety of shorts on sale in the High Street, their growth of fashion-consciousness and the increasing acceptance of shorts in a wider number of social and professional situations.

Debenhams say sales of men's shorts that end more than 4in above the knee have risen this year by 156%. Meanwhile, clam-diggers have fallen out of fashion entirely - John Lewis has stopped selling them. This is a good thing as no self-respecting man should dress like a French toddler. Apparently, the more conservative knee-riders are proving most popular this summer.

Short suits Shorts that skim the knee look cleaner and therefore smarter so men can still look professional – especially in the workplace. This is an arena in which we are continually being judged, whether we like it or not, on our appearance and where the ‘Too short or not to short?’ debate is currently raging the hottest. Metrosexuals in London have re-ignited the furious debate about short suits, something that male fashion has toyed with since the late Eighties and early Nineties However, and most importantly of all, a man should consider the condition of his legs before stepping out anywhere in shorts. Dress according to the length and beefiness of your pins and if in doubt, lightweight, trousers can be just as cool as shorts on balmy days and nights. Just make sure they’re not your suit trousers, matched with your office brogues and sans socks. It’s not a look. Just ask Dave.

B

uilt in 1908 the Shelter at Thorpe Bay Corner was used by the passengers who rode the Tram System in the town.

Our Committee, local builders Tom and Bernard Davis and architect Tim Mathew are working many hours for the success of the Project.

It has been derelict for over 35 years. We aim to bring it back as a useful asset to our Community. We will renovate / rebuild where necessary and open the Shelter for community groups and individuals of all ages and abilities who want to use it for their activities. 50 organisations have registered to use it but we have room for a lot more!

We have formed a “Friends of the Tram Stop Shelter” to help us raise funds. The “Friends” receive a monthly newsletter to update our progress.

non-profit making

Be a “Friend”, Volunteer to help! Look out for Events to help us on our way:Tram Stop Golf Challenge - Thursday 3 October Garon Park - Cost £45 pp

We are a non profit making Charitable Incorporated Organisation and will manage the Shelter within the strict covenant that we all cherish in Thorpe Bay. The Covenant states that the shelter can only be“for use by the public”therefore it cannot be used for commercial purposes.

A Dog’s Life

Think you’ve got an untrainable dog?

P

eople frequently talk about their dog's behaviour as though it's something that they have to put up with; e.g. "Daisy jumps at visitors, it's so embarrassing, but that's just the way she is"… or tell me about modifications they've made to their lives; e.g. "Rex chews the house up when we leave, so we rarely go out, and if we do we get a house sitter” I've also met people who’ve been told by trainers, vets, or breeders that they have an untrainable dog, due to its breed, age, or some other inexplicable reason. It's a shame there are so many opinions floating around which will deter owners from seeking the help which will make a huge difference to their lives.

Don’t despair

Fortunately for me, those who get in touch have decided to seek a second opinion, and DO believe that there is something which can be done to improve their dog's behaviour. And they are right to do so!

For example, a dog thinks a postman is a danger, you prove that you can be trusted to decide what is safe and what isn't, and show your dog that you aren't scared of the postman, then your dog will not be scared of him either…

Earn their trust If you have tried to make changes like this that haven’t worked, then it is more than likely that you aren't yet doing enough in other areas to convince your dog that it can trust in your decision... Consistency is important, as is doing enough of the right things. Unfortunately, not all dog trainers know what the right things are yet! ANY behaviour problem can be improved with the right method. If you want to help someone who believes that their dog is untrainable, then please direct them to my website!

Ultimately there is always an underlying reason for a dog's behaviour. The severity of the behaviour will vary, but the reason is always there. Remove the reason and the dog will no longer need to do the behaviour.

Hard work and happiness at Thorpe Hall A

t Thorpe Hall School pupils are taught to understand themselves as much as they understand the world around them. “We all know that a happy child is a learning child,” said Mr Andrew Hampton, Headteacher, “and at Thorpe Hall we extend that into the classroom and teach pupils how to reflect on what motivates them to learn. Pupils explore their reactions to being frustrated or thwarted so that they can learn how to turn failure into success. At the same time they make the vital connection between hard work and satisfaction. ” The way children’s work is assessed is also focused on promoting emotional maturity and self-reliance. Whilst rewarding children for good work is vital in the earlier years of education, it is also important for pupils to understand that hard work is its own reward and leads to long term success.” continued Mr Hampton.“As children progress through the school they are encouraged to see each classroom activity and piece of homework 34

T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E

as a stepping stone to greater knowledge and understanding. We gradually wean pupils off the need to chase grades and focus instead on well-grounded learning. This is undoubtedly the best way to prepare young people for the next stage of their lives. When pupils leave Thorpe Hall they understand that, as well as good GCSEs, they need to have excellent life skills in order to succeed. These skills include being polite and charming, confident and self-assured and all these things are based on an awareness that emotional intelligence is as important as intellectual intelligence.” by Andrew Hampton Headteacher

recipe of the month

1. Slice the cauliflower in half. Carefully chop one half finely trying to keep as many little florets as possible and reserve the stalk. Roughly chop the other one with the reserved stalk and cook for 6-8 minutes in simmering water or 8-10 mins in a steamer until tender. Drain and then put in a processor with the cream and season with salt and white pepper. Put back in the pan and keep warm until you are ready to serve.

In the Kitchen with Judy Barden

2. Melt the butter in a pan and add the finely chopped florets, stirring for 5 minutes until they start becoming tinged with brown and turn golden. Add the lemon zest and half the parsley.

3. Bring a pan of water to the boil and cook the French beans until just tender.

4. Meanwhile heat the oil in a non stick frying pan over a medium heat. Season the fish fillets and then with the skin side up pinch the middle and make 3 small slits in the skin through the thick part of the fish. This will help it cook more evenly. Repeat with all the fillets. Crispy Skinned Sea Bass with Cauliflower Puree

I

think this must be one of the simplest dishes to make and can be used as a starter (without the beans) a supper or dinner party dish. I love recipes that have 5 ingredients as you know you will not spend too much time in the kitchen. Sea bass is readily available and has come down in price but still feels like a luxury. The cauliflower can also be used with lots of other dishes, fish as well as meat. The puree can be made in advance and gently reheated. Give it a go !

Serves 4 Ingredients 1 small cauliflower 25g/1oz butter Finely grated zest of ½ lemon Handful of chopped flat leaf parsley 50ml double cream 2 tbsp olive oil 4 large sea bass fillets 200g extra fine French beans

40

T H O R P E B AY O R A C L E

5. Add the fish to the pan skin side down and hold them down with a spatula so they do not balloon up. Cook for 3-4 minutes then turn the fillets over for 1 minute on the other side. 6. To serve place the cauliflower puree in a swirl on a warm plate with a small pile of green beans. Place the sea bass on top and then scatter with the golden cauliflower the reserved parsley and then cut the lemon into wedges and serve on the side.

Cloudy2Clear Windows – Service With A Smile! It’s been a crazy few months for Cloudy2Clear Windows. The company which specialises in repairing windows which are steamed up, broken or damaged by replacing the panes – not the frames has grown rapidly as homeowners take advantage of their services. Managing Director Chris Miller feels that it’s all about service. ‘Our product is simple. If your double glazing is misted up we can replace the glass at a fraction of the cost of a new window, in any type of frame, and with a new 5 year guarantee. But it’s not just about saving people money, although

that obviously helps. Many tradespeople have struggled since last year and I honestly feel that during the good times a minority perhaps didn’t focus on customer care as much as they should have done. We make sure we turn up when we say we will, do the job the customer requires and leave their house as clean as a whistle. I often get comments back from customers on how they really didn’t expect that sort of service which, in a way, is very sad for the service industry as a whole.’ Cloudy2Clear service the Southend, Leigh on Sea and Thorpe Bay areas DQG &KULV LV ÀQGLQJ WKDW his approach is a major

factor in his success.‘The truth is that it’s not just the personal satisfaction that I get from doing a good job but also it makes good business sense. I get a huge amount of business from friends and family of people I’ve done work for,

which just goes to show how much a little bit of effort is appreciated.’ So, if your windows are steamed up, broken or damaged give Chris a call for a free quotation on 0800 61 21 118 and he’ll be happy to help!

Oracle Gardening

Bulbs resented with a bulb or seed most amateur gardeners run a country mile in the mistaken belief that such a thing, so far removed from the finished product, is for expert hands only yet bulbs are the easiest plant to cultivate both inside and out. Essential in the dormant months, beacons of colour in the smallest of spots and cheaper than Aldi, bulbs are a must so here's some pointers to get you started.

P

possible to give them a head start but be sure temperatures have noticeably dropped or the bulbs may start to flower.

Planting styles are subjective but if you are planting bulbs beneath trees or in a lawn it's best to keep it looking natural. A good way to achieve this is to mix the bulbs and drop handfuls at waist height then plant them where they lay. In herbaceous beds I prefer to have punches of colour so will plant groups of Buying the same which also allows me to dig a trench Bulbs should be plump and firm - avoid any or area rather than plant individually thereby that are damaged or shrivelled. Most garden saving time. centres have a wide selection of bulbs and Aftercare bring the benefit of inspection before purchase but garden centres (as always) play it Think of bulbs as batteries and so if you wish a safe and will only provide common favourites repeat performance the following year then so look online to add some distinction. Both you will have to tolerate a month of straggly sarahraven.com and crocus.co.uk are both foliage in order for the plant to recharge. You good sites. can remove the flower stalks and thereafter trim any brown leaves to an inch from the Planting ground where they will sit unnoticed until next A good rule of thumb is to plant the bulb three years fireworks. Worth it no? And I haven't even times its depth and twice its breadth. As most mentioned Lillies, Agapanthus, Canna - or bulbs come from hot, usually Mediterranean Amaryllis or winter Hyacinths etc etc regions plant them in a sunny spot with good By Paul Sammon drainage. If the bulbs are going within a bed already cultivated then all you need to use is your trowel. If you are planting crocus in a lawn then gently cut out strips of turf, scrape off some of the topsoil (replacing it with a mixture of grit and well rotted manure) and roll the turf back over. Try to be sure all bulbs are pointing upwards although they will grow if laid on their side so don't fuss too much or you'll be on your knees all week. As to timing, spring www.greenprintgardens.co.uk flowering bulbs should be planted as soon as

s I walk around Thorpe Bay (mainly to and from the train station as a commuter) I always admire the mix of bushes we have in our grass verges and the wonderful gardens that face them. All are in bloom and we have a good show of colour and variety that friends from out of town that visit always comment on.

Whilst it is always a valid point of discussion that local services should be able to keep this issue in check, and that people should take rubbish home, the reality is different. The next time we cut the grass or tend the flower beds or even as we park the car just take a quick look at the grass verge at the front or side of your house and pick up any litter deposited. We live in a wonderfully green area and we can all help keep it that way.

Oracle Sport

Wednesday is always Roger Buxton’s day when over 50 people sit down for lunch in the clubhouse and enjoy a great meal and some entertaining cricket. Roger has been bringing a side to Southchurch Park for over 40 years and as a former player and Life Member has always been a great servant to the club. The match was played with great spirit and ended in an honourable draw. Thursday , Well what can I say! Seven months of planning and we get a phone call from David Masters benefit committee chairman on the Sunday before the game to say that David will not be able to bring his Essex XI to Southchurch Park. They had to train for the 20/20 finals day. Thanks Essex!

Cricket Week

The club recovered from this bombshell and were able to gather enough people to hold a very good six-a-side competition during the afternoon which was well supported. It is a testament to the character of the club that we managed to pick ourselves up off the ground and still have a fantastic day.

ast week Old Southendian & Southchurch Cricket Club held it’s annual cricket week at Southchurch park, with the highlight being the David Masters Benefit Cricket match on Thursday afternoon.

Friday finished the week in style with a Chairmans XI against a club side. This gave a lot of our younger players the chance to play against a some of the coaches that spend many hours with them each week. I know they enjoyed the game which was won by the club side comfortably. Unlucky Chairman!

L

Cricket week has been an annual tradition for the former Southchurch Cricket Club for over 50 years and was continued when the club merged with Old Southendian CC in 1984. It is a fantastic achievement for the club to still be holding this annual event.

Closely fought game On Monday we enjoyed a pleasant afternoon with Over 40’s from both OS&SCC and Southend EMT combining to play against the Over 40’s from Leigh on Sea CC and Westcliff on Sea CC.This was organised in memory of John Wade, who played and coached in both parks over many years who sadly passed away earlier this year. A trophy was presented to the winning team, which on this occasion was Leigh and Westcliff in a closely fought game. It is hoped this fixture will be continued over many years in John’s memory.

Family fun The week was finished off with a great curry courtesy of Rif and Baju and a gig by local band and Old Southendian members the Loud Accessories, which was supported by many members, friends and family. A great week despite the disappointment of Thursday. It was brilliant to see so many young players supporting cricket week and I really believe we have to keep these traditions going as long as we possibly can. Our club is in debt to a small band of people who make this week possible. Without them as in most clubs, traditions would come to an end. by Chris Bunce

O

Tuesday saw Paragon CC who folded in the early 90’s, play their annual fixture against the club. The Paragon team is organised by OS&SCC club stalwart Chris Sorrell, who was an integral part of the Paragon set up. It was unfortunate that half of Chris’s ageing squad picked this week to book a holiday, but as always he managed to organise a team. From what I understand, the club side full of very young athletic players just managed to beat their more senior opponents.

Open Evening at Shoeburyness High School Extended Schools Community Ambassadors

Debate Shoeburyness

D

ebate Shoeburyness VI was held earlier this year with 174 Primary School young people taking part in the morning session in our Wendy Owen Hall and 35 Secondary School young people taking part in the afternoon in round the table discussions. Debate Shoeburyness gives young people an annual opportunity of putting their local community concerns to a panel of invited guests which vary from year to year in accordance with the concerns raised in pre-debate workshops. This year the panel consisted of local councillors, department heads from the Borough, the Neighbourhood Policing Team and C2C. The quality of the presentations, the result of much hard work and research on the part of the young people participating; blew the panel away this year with young people and members of the panel agreeing to follow up on issues raised. 58

We had our strongest ever community minded Shoeburyness High School students taking part in Debate Shoeburyness VI this year which has led to the newest introduction to Extended Schools ‌.. The Extended Schools Community Ambassadors. We had some students who had a desire on their part to continue the good work that was achieved at Debate Shoeburyness and to keep working on the issues that were raised by the young people of Shoeburyness. They will focus on community matters throughout the year through campaigning and identifying community issues that are important to young people; linking with the Southend Youth Council plus meeting the decision makers and stakeholders in the community. Shoebury Park was discussed at length at Debate Shoeburyness VI both by Primary and Secondary School students alike. One of the

Ambassadors’ first actions was to meet with two representatives from Southend Borough Council to give theirs and their peers views on Shoebury Park. We were very proud of our Ambassadors and they obviously impressed our visitors too ….. “Thank you so much for inviting us to Shoeburyness High School, it was really interesting to hear everyone’s views on Shoebury Park and we were very impressed with the confidence, enthusiasm and professionalism shown by your Student Ambassadors” The Park has been allocated some funds and the Council and Ambassadors are keen to find out what the community would like that money spent on. The Council have set up an online Shoebury Park consultation which is open until the 30th September; the link to the survey is www.southend.gov.uk/shoeburypark - please take this opportunity to have your say in the future of Shoebury Park.
