Leveraging Untapped Resources to Address Children’s Oral Health
CMS Notice This overview of “SmileConnect®: Leveraging Untapped Resources to Address Children’s Oral Health Nationally” describes an Altarum Institute project supported by Grant Number 1C1CMS331321 from the Department of Health and Human Services, Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services. The contents of this publication are solely the responsibility of the authors and do not necessarily represent the official views of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services or any of its agencies.
Altarum Institute Overview • A Michigan company since 1946 • Deep connections to the University of Michigan College of Engineering, Medical School and School of Public Health • Nonprofit, focused solely on health and healthcare, headquartered in Ann Arbor • Today, we balance “think-tank” work for the Federal government with direct interventions to improve health and healthcare
SmileConnectÂŽ Overview As many as 17 million children nationwide go without dental care each year. SmileConnect is hoping to reduce that number one connection as a time.

Connection Highlights Nearly 15,000 Children Impacted Nationwide The American Indian Health and Family Services Pow Wow “To me, dental school isn’t about spending long nights at school studying or working in the simlab, its is also about applying what I have learned to help serve others. Being able to volunteer at events such as the American Indian Health and Family Services Health fair is truly rewarding”.

Reaching Low-Income Households: Connecting Oral Health Services to Head Start Programs “Dr. Hares, has been a wonderful help to our program. She worked with me on scheduling our sites for her dental exam visits and she has been providing the dental exams to our children at all of our sites. I want to thank you (SmileConnect) for your assistance in connecting our agency with Dr. Hares”.
