WHERE IT BEGAN.. • OHA hosted an Older Adult Symposium in 2013, gathering healthcare professionals to identify resources currently available to health professionals, caregivers and older adults about their oral health

• As a result of the Symposium, OHA convened an advisory panel and partnered with a geriatric dentist and community health educator to create an engaging oral health education curriculum for seniors…

TRENDS IN AGING NETWORK

TOOTH WISDOM®: GET SMART ABOUT YOUR MOUTH Workshop for independent, community-dwelling older adults delivered in settings where they naturally congregate: senior centers, libraries, places of worship. OHA trains oral health professionals to educate community-dwelling older adults to build self-efficacy in caring for their oral health • Working and communicating with older adults • Cultural Competency • Presentation skills and group facilitation Encourages older adult participants to recognize that prevention is critical at all ages • Demonstrates good oral hygiene practice • Participants take a pre/post assessment • Receive oral hygiene products and list of resources within their community & tip sheets GOAL: Become an evidenced-based oral health education curriculum disseminated to seniors nationally

TOOTH WISDOM®: GET SMART ABOUT YOUR MOUTH PILOT RESULTS 2014-2016 129 workshops for 2,700 older adults by 237 dental hygienists trained in-person by OHA in 5 pilot states: MI, IL, TN, OR, MN

94% of participants in 2016 (n=577) reported that the workshop has helped them feel more confident to manage their oral health.

2017 IMPLEMENTATION MODEL Changes needed: • Schedules of full-time hygienists did not align well with schedules of aging sites (workshops cancelled) • Volunteer model wasn’t allowing for an ideal amount of workshops • Aging partner carried a large part of the implementation

Aging

2017 CURRICULUM REVISIONS & ADDITIONS A Curriculum Advisory Council was assembled to inform changes to the curriculum and it’s materials, consisted of 4 hygienists who have conducted several workshops, and one representative from Colgate •

Edits to curriculum itself: added images, less text, larger text

Content order reverse: begin with oral health issues that may occur and end with prevention and homecare techniques

Edits to questionnaire questions

Use of different colored paper for each page of questionnaire packet to increase full completion

Inclusion of a feedback form to capture opinions of older adult participants (instead of focus groups from previous pilot years)

*All hygienists wishing to present the curriculum in 2017 were required to participate in an “update webinar” to become abreast of these changes.
