ORAL HEALTH AMERICA
In 2008, Oral Health America helped to improve the public’s oral health in communities across the United States by: Increasing Access to Oral Health Care Assisted over 90,000 children in receiving oral disease prevention and oral health promotion services, many for the first time. Provided 66 treatment partner programs with funding, donated dental products and/or technical assistance.
Fostering Oral Health Education Secured over 110 million audience impressions for messages about the importance of self care, regular dental visits and healthy food choices in maintaining oral health during National Smile Month. Engaged with over 200,000 parents and children addressing the health risks of smokeless tobacco use at the Little League Baseball World Series. Communicated online and through a symposium at the New York Academy of Sciences with nearly 12,000 medical and dental professionals about the integration of oral and systemic disease diagnosis, treatment and management.
Advancing an Oral Health Advocacy Voice for the Public Promoted the integration of oral health in healthcare reform to increase access for 130 million Americans without dental insurance.

Oral Health America’s partnership has been critical to the success of the Santa Barbara County Oral Health Collaborative’s efforts to advance oral health services for underserved children and families. Oral Health America’s leadership role in improving oral health is a commendable example to us, and we greatly appreciate the partnership we are fortunate to hold with you.

EDUCATION According to a public opinion survey conducted by Oral Health America in 2008, most adults are unaware of the role that infectious bacteria can play in tooth decay. National Periodontal Disease Project (NPDP) In 2008, the National Periodontal Disease Project collaborated with dental educators, corporations, and advocates on a symposium at the New York Academy of Sciences intended to increase interaction between medical and dental care providers in managing and treating periodontal disease. The symposium reached nearly 12,000 individuals on-line and 170 participants in attendance.
Aetna originally got involved in the NPDP and in planning the symposium because of the company's interest in the integration of health services, including medical and dental care. We are interested in groups that are similarly aligned in looking at the connection between oral health and systemic health care issues. — Mary Lee Conicella, DMD, National Director of Clinical Operations, Aetna Dental, and Oral Health America Board Member
National Spit Tobacco Education Program (NSTEP) Through NSTEP, Oral Health America educated young people about the risks of smokeless tobacco use via in-school presentations, the sale of 20,000 pieces of educational material and outreach to 200,000 parents and children at the Little League Baseball World Series. Gruen Von Behrens has served as an NSTEP speaker for many years, and travels throughout the country to bring his experience with spit tobacco use and oral cancer to schools.
Gruen was a guest speaker at our high school, and I would like to thank him for the impact he has made on my 18-year-old son, You cannot possibly imagine how that assembly touched him. Upon returning home from school yesterday, my son came to me and told me of Gruen’s story and then said he will never chew again. —Sherry Sypulski, parent, Karns City, PA

National Smile Month The importance of brushing, good nutrition, and regular dental visits is the focus of National Smile Month, the largest independent international mouth health awareness campaign. Launched in the U.S. in 2008 by Oral Health America with the support of the International Dental Health Foundation, the program generated over 110 million audience impressions and approximately $98,000 in in-kind support from collaborative program partners who worked with Oral Health America to engage care providers and communities in promoting oral care messages across the country.
The target Women, Infants and Children (WIC) Program audience consisting of low-income families and about 125 individuals received free toothbrushes, toothpaste and educational materials for National Smile Month. The event was such a success that we will consider setting it up again.
—Renee Bragdon Community Education Specialist, Aroostook County Oral Health Education Program, Aroostook, Maine The partnership with Oral Health America to promote National Smile Month is making and will continue to make a difference for West Virginia’s children and youth most at risk.

ADVOCACY Oral Health America advocated for policies that create oral health equity for over 130 million Americans without dental insurance and those who are unable to obtain dental care. Campaign for Oral Health Parity Oral Health America’s new strategic plan calls on the organization to increase its advocacy-related efforts in 2009 and beyond. In 2008, the organization collaborated with Oral Health Kansas on the Oral Health America Grading Project to develop Keep Kansas Smiling: Oral Health in the Sunflower State, giving Kansas an overall “B” grade. The state ranked lowest (a "D-") in access to dental care. Oral Health America also hosted the on-line National Center for Fluoridation, which promotes community water fluoridation, and partnered with the Dental Health Foundation in surveying the 2008 presidential candidates on their views about oral healthcare. Oral Health America joined members of the Oral Health Action Partnership in supporting a letter to Congress from the American Dental Education Association about oral health and healthcare reform.
Oral Health America advocates for improved access, social and economic equity, workforce diversity, and effective community-based interventions. The organization has served for many years as a loyal partner to state and local health department dental programs as they struggle to meet the needs and demands of what would otherwise be a poorly served public. It has also been a strong advocate for increased federal funding of oral disease prevention and oral care services.
