MADE FOR PLAY

With a hands-on, start-to-finish approach, Suzanne Nichols, NCIDQ, designed a brand new, custom vacation home in Reunion for a retired NBA basketball player and his family. The 10-bedroom, 14-bath home has a sleek, contemporary style with interiors that are modern yet transitional enough for the dwelling to be rented when the owners aren’t in town.

82

FAMILY FRIENDLY

For a Windermere family of six, a lakeside retreat that would accommodate all their needs plus those of the in-laws and extended family was top priority when choosing to build. They found a suitable lot with 285 feet of Lake Butler shoreline and began the process of creating a family friendly home with all the bells and whistles that also had to be very energy efficient.

Taking a dark, dated 4,000-sq.-ft. condo in The Residences, an ideally located building in Winter Park, and giving it a fresh, light makeover fell to designers Ted Maines and Julie Koran of Ted Maines Interiors. Fortunately, their clients expressed their needs clearly and then gave the duo carte blanche to complete the renovation.

Paint Colors

by Anne Rue

As 2016 comes to a close, the inevitable yearning for resolution and change begins to take root. Luckily, a new year doesn’t just call for refinement of our bodies and minds. After all, the majority of our time is spent at home. Certainly our homes deserve a bit of sprucing up too. When a client comes to me with a space that lacks inspiration, my go-to is a fresh coat of paint. A new color palette has the biggest impact at the lowest cost. Behr’s newly released limited edition trend colors caught my eye and there are several in particular that I simply adore. Here’s how you can live inspired in 2017.

Phil Kean has continued to build along the blocks between Orlando Avenue and Denning Drive and has recently opened a kitchen and bath showroom. And the newest designer to debut in the area is Suzanne Nichols Design Group’s 3,000-sq.-ft. fullservice design center near Pennsylvania Avenue. The design center will provide onestop shopping for furnishings and custom finishes and fabrics. Customers are also able to consult with knowledgeable design personnel and sales staff. “This new design center will offer the convenience of one location for selecting custom upholstery as well as furniture, finishes and fixtures,” says interior designer and owner Suzanne Nichols, NCIDQ. The gallery includes a showcase of kitchen countertops, shower door displays, a kids’ zone, artwork and unique home décor accessories. “This service is obviously in demand locally, since customers were stopping by even as we began our installation of the showroom,” she adds. “Being able to choose the foundations of good design— including colors, textures, contrasts, and unique customized style — should be available here to the public.” Suzanne Nichols Design Group has been in business since 1996 and she previously had a showroom and studio space in Lake Mary.

tOTALtRANSFORMATION Outdated Show Home Gets

MODERN MAKEOVER Photography by Shannon Lazic

ONCE THE ENVY OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD AND EXAMPLE OF THE FINEST DETAILS, THIS FORMER HOME BUILT AS AN EXTRAVAGANT SHOWCASE, WAS SHOWING MORE THAN JUST ITS AGE. IT WAS A CONFUSING COMBINATION OF STYLES THAT WAS NEITHER COHESIVE NOR VERY BRIGHT.

T

his house was originally built as a show house so it had a lot of different themes — Moroccan, Asian and Mediterranean with Corinthian columns, etc. — and there was a lot of wallpaper,” says Shannon Lazic, principal, Steele Street Studios, of the 10,000-sq.-ft. mansion that she and her partner,

Blair Kersenbrock, were tasked with updating for a young family. Charles Clayton Construction handled the structural details on the renovation.

42

INTERIOR APPEAL | ORANGEAPPEAL.COM

The designers had previously worked at Marc-Michaels Interior Design and started Steele Street Studios in 2013. They both studied interior design at Seminole State College where they met, but had each been in different fields before pursuing their passion. Shannon had a business degree from UCF and had worked in real estate, but when the recession hit she found she could not smother her creative urges so she went back to school. And Blair had worked as an agent/assistant for professional tennis players, eventually going to Australia to follow her would-be husband where they both played basketball professionally. Now with young children, they enjoy the life and workstyle they have created, and could totally relate to the couple they were helping to design a family-friendly home for. “They had specific ideas about what they wanted — they wanted the home to be really light and airy so we started there,” Shannon says. The duo immediately focused on the areas that would be used most, which included the main downstairs living space and kitchen. “The kitchen was terribly dated and dark. We changed the whole layout of the space. We took out the angled island and added two islands. There is also a hidden pantry now,” Blair says. Perhaps the biggest change was in the color scheme, which went from a deep green with dark wood details and heavy beams to a clean, neutral palette accented with a sparkling chandelier. Luckily the floors were in good shape and could be salvaged. The layout of the family room was reoriented as well with the stone fireplace replaced with a lighter, cleaner surround and lit, built-in shelving installed. The WINTER 2017

43

tRANSFORMATION massive entertainment center was no longer necessary thanks to the sleeker style of today’s televisions. The dark beams were removed and the furnishings, although very neutral, feature lots of texture and some subtle patterns. The formal dining room was updated by removing textured walls and stainedwood details. The designers retained the coffered ceiling which is now highlighted with one large chandelier instead of the grouping of wrought iron ones. Large columns were also removed to further open up the space. In the staircase area, a heavily textured soffit was removed along with the moldings. New molding details were added with grass cloth insets. At the top,

dark beams were painted white and a new chandelier was hung. One of the most dramatic transformations was in the master bath where wallpaper, tile and columns were removed along with the predominant colors of green, gold and brown. “The cabinets were existing and we just painted them. They were all solid wood and good quality. There was a built-in tub flanked by two large columns and a really large shower. We added lighting and mirror detailing. We also added the marble flooring,” Shannon explains. The other rooms in the home — five bedrooms, study, game room and theater — also received makeovers during the five-month process that only needed a wall taken down in the master bedroom. Some of the structural modifications also included squaring off many of the door

frames and removing the precast concrete columns throughout. All the furnishings were new and the small pops of color were accomplished through art pieces. “In the end the owners were really happy. The biggest challenge was making compromises with what was existing that we couldn’t change, and trying to make those elements fit in with the new picture we were trying to paint. There were some things we just had to forget were there, and make them look as good as they could. Otherwise it would have been too expensive to change them. At the end of the day no one else would necessarily notice, so it was just not worth the cost,” Shannon adds. “Our goal was to keep it timeless so that in a few years they weren’t going to be tired of anything.”

Bring to a simmer, cover and cook until a knife slips in and out of the potatoes easily and cleanly, about 25 minutes. Drain the potatoes and peel them. Put them through a potato ricer (or a food mill fitted with its finest disk) into a large saucepan. Turn the heat under the saucepan to medium and dry the potato flesh out a bit by turning it vigorously with a spatula for about 5 minutes. In the meantime, rinse a small saucepan, pour out the excess water, but do not wipe it dry. Add the milk and bring to a boil. Turn the heat under the potatoes to low and incorporate the well-chilled butter bit by bit, stirring it in energetically for a smooth, creamy finish. Transfer to a small bowl and place in refrigerator uncovered. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place sprouts on a baking sheet and roast in oven 45-50 minutes until they begin to slightly brown. 2016 Aurora Award Winning Homes Reveal 5 Popular Elements of Modern-Day Style by Karen LeBlanc

Today’s codified interior design elements are texture and pattern in neutral and monochrome color palettes that add depth and drama to a space. Arguably, these elements of style arise from our current fixation on unadorned features; simple, clear forms; and clean-lined décor filtered through our regional lens.

Classic colors of white, gray and blue in new and nuanced hues define interiors while purely Mediterranean facades are less ubiquitous as a Florida version of modern architecture of flat roofs and walls of glass gains popularity. Unpretentious yet luxurious, these Aurora award-winning living spaces embody the latest looks in interior design and architectural style with five popular elements.

The staircase entry steals the scene in the River House in DeBary, an Aurora award-winner for Best Renovated House from the team of Hardwick General Contracting, Inc., The Design Studio and interior designer John McClain. The 3,800-sq.-ft. Southern-traditional home pays homage to its horse farming days and is located on five acres on the St. John’s River. The home features a floating circular staircase with a railing design that mimics the flow of the river behind the house. “We kept the staircase completely open underneath so that the view of the river was uninterrupted as you enter. The treads for the stairs are made of 100-year-old barn wood reclaimed from a Tennessee barn that was torn down,” says John McClain, who describes the design theme as “I wanted a design concept that held true to the home’s surroundings while bringing in elegant, textural and sophisticated accents,” John adds.

casual, functional and unfussy to meet the needs of this busy family, so there is no hiding its usage,” explains Kim, referring to the popular seamless look in kitchen design where appliances seem to disappear behind custom panels. “The clients stressed the importance of obtaining rustic simplicity in an elegant form to create a well-balanced and ethereal space to live in. They also wanted a warm touch to the space to soften up the modern finishes throughout the home. To do so, we suggested the use of wood planking in a dark stain as well as a rough cement counter top on the island. This allowed a more natural and rugged feel that appropriately blended the tones and textures of the modern home,” Dylan explains. Using a warm tone color palette instead of the ubiquitous white and gray, the design team created a contemporary twist on modern style using unique and sleek finishes in simple, clean, elegant forms. The fridge and freezer, clad in custom panels, showcase the commercial-grade range and hood while the thick concrete countertop further instills the “durability” of the space and wood-planked wall grounds the space.

TRADE ECRETS “The dark-stained wall corresponds to the plane of the architecture taking the view to the outdoor living spaces. It is a structural feature and a bold design statement at the same time,” says Dylan, who notes that current kitchen trends are devoid of detail almost to a fault. “Frankly, I think the latest kitchens are all looking the same — perhaps too simple in style. Not everything has to be void of detail. There is a big difference between a white T-shirt and a white cable knit sweater. Both are important,” she adds. “Kitchen and bath design, much like

Area designers share details about some of their favorite rooms.

G R E AT R O OM The concept of the great room began in the 70’s and is still popular because it combines comfortable, easy seating for lounging and dining. In this particular room, the stained trusses, doors and windows on both sides and bleached oak floors add interest to this popular space.

DI N I N G R O OM A stunning design with a mixture of modern and transitional elements. One of the best features of this room is the climate-controlled glass wine room. The wine display has been incorporated into the corner of the kitchen then wraps into the hallway and dining room. It is a floor-to-ceiling glass cube that is a more contemporary approach to floating wine off the wall.

We used pieces from different styles and tied them together with color. To add the cherry on top, we used a selective piece of art to complement the chandelier.

MODERN MUSE BUILDER: Phil

Kean Design Group

INTERIORS: Rob

Turner, Phil Kean Interiors

PHOTOGRAPHY: UNEEK

For Danielle and Travis Payne, their first home together is a reflection of her art background and bright personality and his relaxed attitude and penchant for clean lines. Coming from a more traditional style background, Danielle adopted the contemporary style and worked with designer Rob Turner and his team at Phil Kean Design Group to carefully curate this modern beauty. The living room, perfect for entertaining, is set up salon style and Danielle uses the baby grand as a counter when hosting parties. Along the back wall, cabinets store the baby’s toys and other items out of sight. The “cherries” on the cocktail table were purchased at the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival and the sofa is covered in a crushed velvet that reminds Danielle of the ocean.

“WE WERE LOOKING FOR OUR FIRST HOME TOGETHER FOR A LONG TIME and with my upbringing and with my other home, I automatically wanted to go Mediterranean and Travis wanted to look at something contemporary,” Danielle explains. They were driving through a Winter Park neighborhood when they spotted this nearly complete Phil Kean home. “I was ready to bite off the contemporary style for the first time,” Danielle says. “All of my old furniture I put into storage or gave away and I started completely over with everything. Because everything in my old home WINTER 2017

and what Travis had from his home didn’t match. I mean I collect MacKenzie Childs furniture,” she says with a laugh. She reached out to the builder, Phil Kean, and asked if anyone could help with the interior design. “And they sent over Rob and his team — Alyssa and Kelly — and they were just amazing to work with,” she says. “They got my vibe right away.” She wanted to stay away from a cold, monochromatic aesthetic, but wanted her contemporary art collection to pop. Danielle has an art history degree and worked at Millenia Fine Art for years as well as Fay Gold Gallery in Atlanta. “Whimsical modernism is the coined concept for this young family’s retreat. Their art collection was our inspiration along with the Missoni/Mondrian-like way of handling the shapes and forms,” Rob Turner says. Danielle was very hands-on throughout the process and worked with Rob on selecting color schemes, furnishings and fabrics. “I told Rob and his crew that I really needed things that were different and unique. I fell in love with this teal [on Sparks of turquoise highlight the entry with Dale Chihuly acrylic on paper pieces and velvet-covered stools that can be used for additional seating.

the sofa] because Travis is a surfer and I thought the way the velvet crushed looked like the ocean,” she explains. The artwork throughout the room is from Danielle’s collection. In the entryway, Dale Chihuly acrylic on paper pieces hang above the table. “When I worked at Millenia, we represented a lot of Dale Chihuly, so I sent them some pictures of the furniture and we found some great pieces that matched,” she says. Meanwhile the Kevin Bacon portrait across the living room is actually by Travis. “He is color blind believe it or not,” Danielle

says. “He only sees things in certain colors, so he enjoys painting in black and white with one color.” That fact also made it very easy

for Danielle to bring in all the pops of color. “When we started working in the master bedroom, I just love [Piet] Mondrian, and Rob came up with the idea of doing a

fabric wall,” she explains. “And I suggested instead of doing it all one color that we piece it together like a Mondrian painting. I just love the way it turned out.” Also anchoring the master bedroom is an artwork the couple commissioned from Derek Gores, who recycles magazines, labels, data, and assorted found analog and digital materials to create works on canvas. “We went out to his studio [in Melbourne, FL] and met with him. He asked a lot of personal questions to incorporate into the piece. And of course, she had to be a blonde because I said there’s no way there’s going to be a brunette in my bedroom,” Danielle (a blonde) adds. The biggest challenge of the project was staying on schedule — some labor strikes delayed some of the furnishing deliveries and they were working against the clock as Danielle was expecting her first child during the process. With that in mind, they sectioned off the work, beginning with the living room, master bedroom and upstairs office. The whole process took about a year, from closing on the home to completing those rooms, and Danielle and Travis really love how functional it is, even with an 18-monthold now. “With the open floor plan it’s really, really easy to entertain,” she adds. As she works on tackling some of the other rooms, Danielle admits she’s definitely committed to the contemporary design style. “I thought contemporary was going to be hard but once you get going everything kind of works. I think that’s definitely our wheelhouse forever. I’ve enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would so it’s been fun,” she says.

It was Danielle’s idea to do the fabric-covered wall in a Mondrian pattern. The couple commissioned the piece from artist Derek Gores.

“There was definitely collaboration between the owners, the design team and myself. But the homeowners had a lot of the ideas on everything. For example, adding a mudroom off the garage with custom lockers for the kids that flows into a homework room with a long desk and four computer stations,” Adam says. It only took about 18 months to complete the project. “The entire house was built very specifically for entertaining and family living. We had about six months of pre-construction and design to fine tune everything in the home. Obviously with a custom home there can be changes during the process, but we took the time with the designers and homeowners to make sure every detail was thought out for the children, in-laws and cousins — the whole family,” he adds.

The three-bedroom, four-bath unit had the right bones but needed some paring down to reflect the tastes of the new owners. “It took nine months to take the whole place back down to the roots, start over and give it a totally different feel,” he adds. According to the designers, the interior was very heavy, with lots of built-ins and clutter. A private entrance from the

elevator was changed from an arched opening to double doors. The designated dining room was turned into the media room and the bathrooms were gutted. They were able to update the kitchen with fresh paint on the cabinets, new countertops and hardware, while the existing Wolf appliances were still usable. “It was truly a great project in our eyes because it was an opportunity for Julie and I to collaborate with clients who were totally open, giving us the opportunity to do what we thought was best for the space. They were very specific in telling us what the overall theme they were looking for which was a Parisian apartment,” he explains. “They were wonderful at telling us exactly what they needed specifically — what room they would be in to watch TV as a family, going into detail about where they would each sit and what else they might be doing. They did not give us design ideas which made them the perfect clients,” Julie says. The clients gave their input at the start and never wavered, letting the designers get to work. There were only a few sit-down meetings. “They approved the concept in the beginning and just let us run with it,” she adds. Much of the design started with the couple’s extensive art collection. “The artwork, which they already had, played a big role in the design. They let us choose what we liked from their collection and decide where to place it,” Ted says.

The dining room is more functional and houses the couple’s large book collection. David Weeks Studio Kopra Burst chandelier is over the Saarinen tulip table from Knoll and Anziano chairs in leather from Donghia.

Most of the furnishings were interesting and new. “We used a lot of things from our in-house lines but not from the modern lines we typically use. This was more transitional than some of our projects. We used Romo fabrics everywhere from drapery to upholstery,” he adds. The other jumping-off point for the design was the rugs, which the couple selected with the designers from Carpet Source in Winter Park. In almost every room the redone wood floors were layered with textural coverings that added another dimension. “We loved that they really let us go to town with the lighting. We did some very nice fixtures and I love the breakfast/dining room. It’s an all-purpose space instead of just a formal dining room. They had lots of books so it was our idea to add the shelves. They didn’t really need any serving furniture since it is adjacent to the kitchen,” Ted explains.

The stunning powder room features custom wallpaper by Trove, vanity with polished chrome piano legs from Chameleon Concepts and Rohl crystal faucet. In the master bedroom, the David Adjaye Washington Skeleton aluminum side chair in copper from Knoll makes a strong statement.

The master bath was completely redone with painted wood cabinetry and Terzani lighting. The son’s bedroom utilized the existing built-in that was painted and new furnishings include a USM rolling table and pedestal. Taupe-gray Ligne Roset day bed, Knoll womb chair, a Herman Miller piece (not shown) and custom bench with Romo fabric create a comfortable and cozy den.

The designers also loved how the bathrooms turned out. In the master, they took out the large handicapped accessible tub and added beautifully finished cabinetry that was highlighted by the sconces and ceiling fixture. In the powder bath, they went all out by installing custom wallpaper and vanity, making it a glamorous gem. “For Julie and I to work together on this was great because it definitely upped our game through the collaboration. I couldn’t have done it by myself,” Ted says. “Every time we see them they say they can’t believe this is their home,” Julie adds. WINTER 2017
