Eva Krzewinski died January 16, 2024. She was known throughout the Central Florida community as a dedicated volunteer, tireless champion for the arts, supporter of women’s initiatives, longstanding philanthropist, networking queen and loyal friend.
A bright beacon of enthusiasm and positivity, she lit up every room she entered and never met a stranger.
Those were the beginning words of the obituary I was asked to compose. There was more to follow, of course, but it did not paint the true picture of those who knew her best. In a more personal post, I described her as the life of the party and the party of life. You knew immediately when she arrived at an event — her voice would bounce like airwaves as she greeted everyone in her path.
I first met Eva in the early 2000s at a women’s networking luncheon she founded. Bold and unforgettable, she sported short, spiky red hair and a personality to match. She had one goal — to bring women together and exchange skills and services. The introductions around the room took at least 30 minutes, but everyone got their turn to shine.
She later turned the networking event into a cause when she and her bestie Lanette Jarvis started Pearls for Women, helping one woman at a time, in 2008. I volunteered to create the logo featuring her chosen colors of purple and green with a strand of pearls. The group collected personal items for women in need and encouraged attendees to consider the plight of women who were domestic violence survivors, celebrate women’s achievements, and educate themselves about gender inequities.

But her passion was displayed each March — Women’s History Month — at the Orlando Museum of Art where she curated a women’s exhibit as part of the 1st Thursdays program she cofounded. The last one in 2022 was Art of the Diva and featured
Eva loved show biz. She and my sister purchased an NYC trip at the A Pair to Remember auction and Kate and I tagged along. We snagged tickets to Cabaret, featuring Michelle Williams and Alan Cumming, with cabaret-style seats right next to the stage. After the performance we waited forever at the stage door so Eva could meet Alan. We had front row seats at Live with Kelly & Michael and she auditioned to be a trivia dancer. At Tavern on the Green, she spotted Richard Marx — of course, she had to snap a photo. Everyone has an Eva, or Eva Diva, story that is part of a pretty colorful collage of her life. Typically, upbeat and cheerful, she genuinely loved to be around people. Her life, like most, was not picture perfect, but she wore a smile religiously and relished taking fun-loving selfies with friends. At the end of the day, I believe she only truly wanted one thing — to be loved.

From now through April 30, the Legacy of Excellence: Phenomenal Black Women in Central Florida exhibit will be on display at the Girl Scouts of Citrus Women’s History and Cultural Center. Presented by the African American Women’s History Month Project, Inc. and The Poinsette Foundation, the exhibit serves to acknowledge and celebrate the contributions, achievements and resilience of African American women who have made a significant impact in Central Florida.
“Girl Scouts of Citrus Council is extremely proud to feature Legacy of Excellence at our Women’s History and Cultural Center as the Center’s inaugural sponsored special exhibit,” says Maryann J. Berry, CEO, Girl Scouts of Citrus Council. The exhibit features more than 30 women from various professional fields who have shattered glass ceilings and laid the foundation for generations to come. The collection highlights their individual and collective achievements, educational backgrounds, and dedication to the Central Florida community.
With a mission to empower and amplify the voices of underestimated women and children of color, The Poinsette Foundation worked to present the exhibit in collaboration with the African American Women’s History Month Project Inc. (AAWHMP) to help promote inclusivity, combat stereotypes, and foster a more accurate and complete narrative of our shared past.
“Curating this exhibit was a natural way to align our organizations’ missions to celebrate the lives and legacies of African American women and empower underestimated women and girls of color,” shares Chenise Williams, founder and director of AAWHMP.
THE NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF WOMEN IN CONSTRUCTION (NAWIC) presents Women in Construction Week, March 3-9, which celebrates and promotes the role of women in the construction industry. The NAWIC spearheads this celebration each year from the national level to the local regional chapters through various student programs, job site tours, professional development, as well as education membership meetings and virtual events.
“Our local chapter is one of the largest in the country. We have several active committees including mentorship, and do a Block children’s event, a Lego building competition, and then we have the full week in March. Every region and chapter really focuses on what NAWIC puts out
each year and this year’s theme is the Keys to Your Future. We also have a construction career camp, and a weeklong free camp for high school aged females,” says Kristin Andreasen, immediate past president, NAWIC, and project manager, Charles Perry Partners, Inc.
Locally owned Comprehensive Energy Services celebrates Women in Construction Week as a key driving force in shaping the future of the industry. The CES SHE TEAM starts at the top with co-owner and founder Shelly Morgan, and is present within its upper management, project teams, service
managers and field personnel.

As a Pediatric Psychiatrist, Dr. Tina Gurnani is passionate about making sure each of her adolescent patients is heard and understood. She’s always been drawn to caring for children — maybe because she’s the eldest of three siblings — but discovered psychiatry during her clinical rounds in medical school, which solidified her career path. She is now providing life-changing and often lifesaving services through AdventHealth for Children’s pediatric mental health program.
When deciding on her path to pediatric psychiatry she says she felt she could make more of a difference in someone’s life from an earlier age. “In focusing on a younger age range, I thought I would naturally go into general pediatrics but the more experience I got in that during rotations, it just wasn’t really speaking to me. But the aspect that was speaking to me was behavior concerns and mood, child development, and mental health in general,” she adds.
Dr. Gurnani received her medical degree from Albany Medical College in Albany, NY. She went on to complete a residency in General Psychiatry at the University of Florida and in Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Mount Sinai-St. Luke’s Hospital, New York. She moved back to Gainesville with her husband and practiced for about six years before they relocated to Central Florida.
“At the time, AdventHealth was thinking about starting a pediatric mental health program and supporting youth and
families because it is such a complex system to navigate. You deal with so many factors… long wait times, insurance barriers, etc. I became a candidate for the position, and it just seemed like a perfect fit. It literally started with just me and my office manager — and it was us for a while — before we started getting more people on our team and now it’s grown — we have a nurse coordinator, medical assistant, receptionist, and three therapists,” she explains.
The program serves patients with autism and ADHD, depression and anxiety, breaking barriers to entry by providing immediate support if needed. “A lot of children end up in the ER because parents don’t know where to get care or even if they do know where to get care, the waitlist is so long — often 3-6 months to get into a psychiatrist — so our clinic was formed so that we can see patients within days,” Dr. Gurnani says.
“The reason we’re able to accept patients so quickly is because our model is a little bit unique. Our goal is to stabilize things
and see improvements — usually we’ll see patients for up to six months. Our nurse navigator is critical in finding resources for longer term care if needed, whether that be therapy, medicine management, or other resources like speech therapy or occupational therapy. We will make those referrals once their time with us draws near so parents have a place to go after completing treatment with us. It’s not a hi and bye situation — they are given a plan — but until they get in somewhere else in the community that’s going to be the right fit for them, they can continue seeing us for treatment,” she continues.
Dr. Gurnani’s day-to-day involves seeing new and follow-up patients, making sure they receive proper diagnoses, as it’s often not just one thing. She feels the pandemic had a silver lining in which mental health became a priority as resources and access to care became more available, although there are still challenges, especially in pediatric psychiatry.
And she practices what she preaches at home by taking time to talk with her son,
5, and daughter, 2. “Kids, even at a young age, are absorbing a lot about their environment and they may not say, but they’re internalizing it still. I try to keep aware of that as a parent — modeling how to treat each other because they’re picking up on that. I try to talk with them every day even if it’s just for a couple minutes. See what’s in their minds and at the end of the day, just always give them that safety and security,” she shares.

Up-close performances, gourmet nibbles and craft cocktails in an ultra-hip setting are what you can expect at the newly opened Judson’s Live at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. For more than 10 years The Alfond Inn, owned by Rollins College, warmly welcomed out-of-town guests and locals into community living rooms that quickly became favorite meeting spots — the art-filled public spaces much more expansive ratio-wise than the number of guest rooms would indicate. But growing popularity led to an expansion that recently opened with the addition of a spa, café, second pool deck, and sunny-hued guest rooms.
The original architect, Orlando-based Baker Barrios Architects, designed the new wing with interiors by Baskervill of Richmond, VA, and Sheedy DeLaRosa Interiors of Chicago.
The 13,500-square-foot spa on the second floor of the new wing includes seven treatment rooms, a steam room and sauna, a new fitness area, and luxurious locker rooms. The clean, minimalist design is warmed with natural accents, sculpturefilled walls and custom furnishings.
Spa Director Dayleann Vallejo feels it is different from anything in this market. “Our guests love the intimacy of the space. It’s beautiful with the artwork and really inviting, making everyone comfortable, but guests still sense that luxury element without being overwhelmed with too many people around. It’s a more serene experience,” she says.
Most of the treatments are traditional with an emphasis on elevated details. “For example, some of our signature facials, like the rejuvenating facial, are almost medical grade. That’s been one of our
favorites for anti-aging,” she adds.
The idea is for everyone to have a curated experience that encourages them to escape, relax and enjoy everything the spa has to offer. “In addition to treatments, the amenities are what everyone has enjoyed the most including the sauna, steam room, loungers, pool cabanas, and tropical feel of the outdoor pool area,” she continues.
Special events such as wellness seminars with experts and vendors are among the community happenings being planned. And the spa staff can put together group itineraries for birthday parties, corporate outings and other special occasions.
The new, light-filled lobby café serves coffee, crepes and light bites, transitioning to bar service for wine and dessert in the evenings. The long, open space features warm woods, mid-century modern furnishings,
communal tables and private seating areas.
“This is the central hub connecting all the spaces. Think of it as Grand Central Station. From the check-in experience to the lobby, this connects you to the spa and serves as an additional corridor to the new guest rooms. It’s a community space for
everyone to join together throughout the day. So, in the morning you can meet over coffee and in the evening enjoy a glass of wine. It’s designed to be a refined, yet comfortable and approachable, space,” says Interim General Manager Jason Cotton.
There are 42 wines currently on the menu, but that will change about every two weeks based on guest input. The Café utilizes the Coravin wine preservation system so everything is available by the glass. Pastry Chef Jason Acevedo oversees the dessert menu featuring exquisite selections as beautiful as they are delicious.
Internally, The Café is known as Jason’s playground, and he is happily playing away. One of his playful creations is the nostalgia invoking Cereal Bowl (spiced panna cotta, granola, dehydrated figs and crème anglaise). The popular offering will remain on the menu but may change based on seasonal flavors.
“I’m very fortunate to have the opportunity to be creative and do what I love. The desserts are all part of my journey as a pastry chef for more than 10 years — you learn from every place you work. Most of my ideas come from my experiences. What The Alfond was looking for is very much
my style — sophisticated and elegant with a lot of French techniques,” he says. The art in the hotel will be incorporated into the desserts — think of things like an edible paint palette. Eleven pieces of art have already been identified as sweet subjects.

It’s the one weekend where you know spring has arrived. People strolling through the art-filled tents greeting friends and pondering what to purchase. Whether for an hour or all three days, it’s a delightful way to spend time outside, unplugged and stress-free.
And it’s back for the 65th year. One of the nation’s oldest, largest and most prestigious outdoor art festivals, the Winter Park Sidewalk Art Festival, returns to Central Park, March 15-17, featuring dozens of artists from around the country representing painting, photography, digital art, watercolor, wood, printmaking, sculpture, glass, jewelry, clay, leather, fiber, mixed media, drawing and pastels, and metal.
Artists flock to this festival for the atmosphere and generous prizes — 64 awards totaling $76,500. The festival donates the winning work to the City of Winter Park, and all are on permanent display at the Winter Park Public Library. In addition to special prizes sponsored by the Edyth Bush Charitable Foundation and the Charles Hosmer Morse Museum of American Art, there are 10 Awards of Excellence of $2,000 each, 20 Awards of Distinction of $1,000 each, and 30 Awards of Merit of $500 each.
The Children’s Workshop and Leon Theodore Schools Exhibit inspire and showcase budding artists. The desire to embark on a cruise is more popular than ever — according to Cruise Lines International Association, 85% of travelers who have cruised plan to do so again. Post pandemic the demand is higher than ever, and cruise lines are responding with bigger — the largest is Royal Caribbean’s ICON of the Seas that debuted in January — and better — for example, the recently launched Celebrity Ascent.
with ship godmothers Captain Sandy Yawn (of Below Deck Mediterranean fame) and her sister Michelle Dunham (founder of a nonprofit school for autistic children), I experienced the latest in technology, design and eco-conscious operations.
Ascent is the newest of Celebrity’s Edge Series vessels featuring 32 distinctive restaurants, bars and lounges, including Le Voyage by Chef Daniel Boulud, multi-deck Sunset Bar designed by Nate Berkus, and open-air Rooftop Garden where two cantilevered floating pools offer stunning views six feet over the ship’s edge. It definitely took more than a few excursions to explore everything.
Spacious accommodations include spainspired AquaClass staterooms, Infinite Veranda staterooms with a balcony that can be enclosed or not with the push of a button, and The Retreat, a secluded area of the ship with a private restaurant, lounge and sundeck just for suite guests.

Art installations on boardI love cruises because they’re the best of both worlds: you get to experience many exotic destinations, taste fantastic culinary delicacies, enjoy breathtaking entertainment, and you are able to unpack once and relax in your sailing hotel.
You should average two outfits per day, as you’ll wear one during the day and one at night for dinner. I find that I like to re-wear at least two or three outfits at night to save space.
Here are some suggestions on how to pack and what to wear:
Evenings on board are either smart casual — tasteful dress including skirts, pants or jeans with stylish tops, knee-length or longer summer dresses, and coordinating pashminas. Men can wear linen pants and colorful matching crew or boatneck shirts. For evening chic, it’s a cocktail dress with heels and a dinner jacket for men.
During the day, cruisers sport moisturewicking shirts, shorts, pants, casual dresses and cotton outfits with comfortable walking shoes or sandals. Fabrics like silk and wool are not recommended.
Men & Women Day Wear: T-Shirts, tank tops, shorts, pants, long-sleeve shirt, underwear, swimsuits, swimsuit cover-up, light jacket, hat/cap, pajamas, athletic shorts, socks, sneakers, flip-flops (wet decks can be slippery) or sandals.
Evening Wear for Men: Dress shirt, pants, belt, shoes, blazer, tie, shoes and socks.
Evening Wear for Women: Evening gown or cocktail dress, dress pants and blouse, jewelry and accessories.
Over-the-Counter Medications: include something for motion sickness (activated charcoal can often help with an upset stomach) but ask your doctor or pharmacist for advice on what might be best for you.
Organization is key because staterooms tend to be very small.
Packing Cubes: Love them! You can label each cube, pack, place into your luggage, and then directly into the drawers without needing to unpack to find what you need.
Toiletries: Make sure to pack all of your cosmetics and toiletries in zip lock bags to avoid spillage.

SPRING MEANS THE WEATHER IS WARMER, GARDENS ARE LUSHER AND DAYS ARE LONGER. AND ENTERTAINING AT HOME IS MY FAVORITE PLACE TO BE WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY. HERE ARE SOME EASY WAYS TO ENJOY EVERYONE’S FAVORITE FLORIDA SEASON.
To me, setting a spring table is by far the easiest one to set. Everything is blooming and there are so many beautiful flowers to choose from. If floral arranging isn’t your favorite thing to do, pick one flower and just do lots of them. Tulips are very user friendly and can be arranged in minutes. You can even head to your local farmers’ market for centerpiece ideas. Fresh potted herbs placed down the table or bowls of bright colored vegetables or fruits are gorgeous mixed with glass votives. Scallop shapes are so in this season. Scalloped napkins and plates add an extra special detail to your table.
Selecting what’s in season is a great starting point. If you are at the farmers’ market, look for what’s fresh and try to work your menu around that. Spring vegetables, fresh herbs and edible flowers make everything look naturally beautiful and nothing says spring more than tasting something fresh and beautiful. Since the weather is usually cooperative during spring, grilling is an easy option and makes cleanup a breeze. A couple of simple appetizer ideas are whipped feta dip with crisp vegetables and smoked salmon. Both a snap to prepare ahead of time — and always delicious.
Thin sandwich bread
Lemon herb cream cheese
Smoked salmon
Cucumber slices
Fresh dill
Cut bread into circles using a biscuit cutter (optional). Spread lemon herb cream cheese on one side.
Top with smoked salmon, cucumber and dill.
I sprinkled Everything Bagel seasoning on mine because I love the crunchy topping.
8 oz softened cream cheese
1 clove minced garlic
Fresh herbs (parsley, green onions, chives)
Lemon juice and zest to taste
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
In a bowl, whip cream cheese until fluffy. Add remaining ingredients.
This recipe is delicious on sandwiches, scrambled eggs, roasted potatoes or vegetables.
Everyone loves a cocktail using fresh fruit juices for spring. There are several options so here are a couple of my favorites. One is a mocktail so all your guests can sip on something pretty and refreshing.
1/2 oz agave
1/2 oz fresh lime juice
4 oz pink grapefruit juice
4 oz sparkling water
Garnish with fresh thyme.
2 oz tequila
1 oz fresh lime juice
2 oz pink grapefruit juice
Splash of grenadine
Garnish with fresh lime or grapefruit slices.

How are they growing and what do you envision moving forward? My passion is helping nonprofits, so that’s where I’ll be moving forward in 2024. In this busy, buzzy world, how do you stay relevant and relatable? I love learning and growing and haven’t stopped educating myself in 25 years of owning a business. Social media became part of my work life as soon as it was born! Facebook grew my business in the early days, and now Instagram really is the driver, the shop window for every avenue I pursue.
Consistency is key; you don’t have to post often but you need to deliver in a timely fashion and pay attention to the current trends. I never really felt that I was relevant. I believe staying in fashion in business is a fool’s pursuit, popularity is seasonal. My goal was always to be the best in my field, an aspirational purchase and the luxury choice. Staying relatable comes down to being honest, I share everything, it’s just how I am made. I educate, show behind-the-scenes video footage at work, my process, how I am feeling, successes and failures. Sincerity and being humble will always make people feel welcome.
What’s the secret to connecting in a meaningful way? I am actually really interested in people. When I meet someone new my thoughts do not go to what they can do for me but who can I introduce them to. The word empathy gets shared often, but I truly believe that I have a greater sense of the emotions people are projecting, which helps me communicate. Even if I feel they don’t like me, it just makes me doubly nice! I sometimes get anxiety walking into a packed space, like a networking event. It takes a lot of energy to show up and promote yourself.
Networking is very important — you have to be seen if you want long-term success. When I am low energy or my self-esteem is not at full capacity, I take my camera or phone and take pictures, sharing all the other suppliers, writing something cool about them, focusing on their endeavors not mine. This practice has broadened my reach, helped me grow my database, my images and words are shared, and people recognize me for my work whilst I am promoting theirs.
What are the most effective and interesting ways to promote your endeavors? My creative projects have helped my business grow tremendously. Some have been published internationally, some have won awards, but all have helped my audience grow. I interviewed 50 people for 50 days and photographed them with a 50mm lens and shared their story online daily. The project 50/50/50 had worldwide acclaim. I also did a self-portrait project for a year. A weekly image and narrative that was great for my soul but also opened the doors to a whole variety of opportunities.
In 2021, I opened a luxury photography studio in downtown Orlando. This has helped me reach a whole new audience. My space is utilized by many, and I host events and use the shopfront to display my work and offers. Weekly emails to our growing database, live videos, Facebook groups and now my podcast are all great avenues for me to promote and grow my business. Last year I launched Bareface Brunch, a monthly meetup of women, to talk, share and donate to charity. Each month we donate a minimum of $25 per person — you come as you are, it’s all about showing up without showing off. We host in a variety of venues and businesses so that my hosts get to meet new people that may possibly become clients. Each host picks the charity for the month. It’s simple and inviting and we raise more than $1,000 every time we meet.
How are they growing and what do you envision moving forward? The podcast, SheNETworks, which is available to watch and listen to on all providers is my latest venture, and something I have wanted to do for a while. The technicalities were holding me back, so I hired a producer, and I am now on my second series. It has received a positive response and has helped me recognize my role as a mentor and educator. A book, or three, are in my future, and I am focusing my attention on working in the professional sector, branding, commercial photography, mentorship and social media management. The new website for SheNETworks is about to be released with all new business services and opportunities.
Anything else you feel is important? Make friends with professional people in your community and share them and their projects. It will enrich your life but will also grow your circle. Surrounding yourself with successful people is also contagious! Never stop your education, knowledge is power. Get involved with charitable endeavors — you never regret giving back and it opens many new doors for you and your business.
In this busy, buzzy world, how do you stay relevant and relatable? In this lively world, I lean into authenticity and storytelling to stay relevant and relatable. Embracing our inner data nerds, we’re not afraid to ask bold questions and break the rules to innovate. This curiosity and positivity, the continuous drive for improvement without repeating the past, keeps us connected and relevant.
What’s the secret to connecting in a meaningful way? It’s all about shared experiences and approachability. Authentic interactions, beyond emails, create genuine bonds. By being present and genuinely interested, we forge connections that go deeper than surface-level exchanges.
What are the most effective and interesting ways to promote your endeavors? It’s showcasing our expertise. Leveraging success stories, referrals, and testimonials, we demonstrate our abilities, engaging our audience with what we truly believe in. It’s about sharing our journey, not just selling a service.
How are they growing and what do you envision moving forward? Expanding through accessible courses, empowering clients to fly solo or partner with us, trusting our expertise. It’s about scaling our impact and making our knowledge available, fostering trust and enabling independence.
Anything else you feel is important? What’s essential is our continuous learning, which solidifies our path forward. It’s about the experimentation in our approach and the joy of sharing our growth with others, creating that spark in everything we undertake.
In this busy, buzzy world, how do you stay relevant and relatable? I listen, lean in, and allow myself and my offerings to evolve as needed. I am always engaging with my community, clients, newsletter subscribers, and listeners, and aligning my offers with what I can do to support their growth, evolution, and transformation. My secret sauce has always been my willingness to invest in my own growth and development. This has had a direct result on my ability to stay relevant for my clients, team members, community, and listeners. Because I am willing to do the work and most importantly share, I have value to add. This leads to greater retention and even more opportunities.
What’s the secret to connecting in a meaningful way? Genuinely listening and thinking about how you can help is most important. I love the saying “be interested versus interesting” — meaning seek to listen and appreciate who you are speaking with versus sharing only about yourself. My superpower is helping others shine BRIGHTER, so I love finding ways to amplify what people are doing and supporting them through their personal and professional journeys. I’m also a huge fan of vulnerability and being honest about the struggles and sacrifices, too. Additionally, following through with what you say you will do goes a very long way to building trust.
What are the most effective and interesting ways to promote your endeavors? I am a huge fan of building your brand, and have leaned into several channels, including speaking, social media, podcasting and writing. I have always been a huge fan of the impact of speaking and sharing your message. This has not only worked extremely well for me, but I’ve helped literally thousands of others to do this effectively as well. As far as interesting goes, podcasting has become one of my favorite ways to share. I have absolutely LOVED growing the She Believed She Could podcast over the last four years.
It’s been an honor to interview so many amazing guests and get connected with incredible people as a result. I also thoroughly enjoy being on podcasts and helping my clients to do the same. In many ways it’s another “virtual stage” that allows me to expand my reach by sharing advice with other people’s audiences. Additionally, in 2023 I published my first book, She Believed She Could, and it has been absolutely amazing to connect with readers around the world. To me, this was a legacy project and something I am extremely proud of. My heart is on every page, and I have absolutely loved witnessing the ripple effect of pouring myself into something that meant so much to me.
How are they growing and what do you envision moving forward? Social media has opened so many doors for me personally and professionally. Brand collaborations, new clients, books deals, speaking opportunities and affiliations have resulted by leaning into growing on social. My Instagram grew by 50,000 in my community last year alone, and I am VERY intentional about how I show up for them on that platform. I’ve leaned in more to LinkedIn over the last several months and I am seeing great results. My podcast continues to be a major priority as I have now monetized it through strategic brand collaborations and advertising opportunities. As the book has gained momentum, so have the speaking inquiries which I am absolutely loving, especially because I can literally zoom in around the globe to share my training and content. In addition to continuing to empower women in their professional careers, the She Believed She Could content has been embraced by sororities, panhellenic associations, and student organizations across the country. I’ve always loved empowering young women, and this is another way that I can support the next generation of leaders.
Anything else you feel is important? Set your goals and have fun! It has been a true joy to lean into new opportunities to share, connect, inspire, and motivate others. As a result, I have been able to create a very fulfilling business and career and do more of what I love. And because technology is constantly evolving, so are the ways you can connect with others. Find what feels right for you and commit to showing up. Your lived experiences and perspective are so important and valuable, and you never know who you’re inspiring as you chase and achieve your dreams. Keep showing up. Keep doing the work. And never underestimate the impact you can have on this world. You are amazing!

In this busy, buzzy world, how do you stay relevant and relatable? We believe in living authentically, both at work and in our personal lives. That means showing up as ourselves in every setting and creating space in our conversations to go beyond the superficial. A: (left): I believe in the power and connection of breaking bread with others. I want to get to know people on a personal level in addition to better understanding their business goals. J: (right): I agree. We learn a lot from being out in the community and meeting with people. That said, I am also very strategic and intentional about where I spend my time. Sometimes you have to say “no” or “not right now” in order to protect your energy for conversations and initiatives that are most aligned with your goals.
When it comes to teaching people how to stay relevant and relatable, DROP THE MIC Coaching helps others define their own priorities and passions. We want to empower people to be the best version of themselves, no matter where or how they want to show up.
What’s the secret to connecting in a meaningful way? J: We focus on planting good seeds with people. Don’t be connected with someone just because you want something from them. Instead of having an agenda that’s all about the things you need, focus on building a relationship without any expectation. Think about how you can support the other person just as much as you hope they would be inspired to support you.
A: The easiest starting point is to put away how you think you’re “supposed to act” and be yourself. Express your genuine interest in people, allow yourself to be excited about their journey, and embrace your desire to learn. You have more in common with people then you think.
For those who are nervous about networking, we recommend starting small with an activity or event that interests you. Networking doesn’t have to be all business meetings and professional development seminars. You can find a volunteer opportunity that aligns with your interest and connect with others participating. As you gain confidence in these conversations, broaden your horizons and explore new activities.
J: A simple practice I like to share with others is the 30-minute coffee meeting. Make a goal for yourself to ask someone to coffee once a month and schedule it for 30 minutes. This takes a lot of the pressure out of networking because it’s a short, casual, and cost-effective meeting.
What are the most effective and interesting ways to promote your endeavors? It’s all about word-ofmouth for us. Our network serves as our enthusiastic advocates and supporters, and we are constantly welcoming others into that space by spending time in the community. Remember, no one tells your story better than you. So, get out there and celebrate your wins (big and small), learn from others who can help you improve, and share your experience with others on their own journeys.
How are they growing and what do you envision moving forward? We are both founders and executive leaders in our own businesses, but we recognized that we have a passion and skill for helping empower others to become more confident communicators. We decided to offer DROP THE MIC Coaching as a new vertical integration within our existing businesses.
J: We envision a future where every organization — big or small — invests in their people to enable them to speak with impact, inspire with confidence, and master their message in any setting. A: We recognized a gap in the community and were eager to fill it. We added DROP THE MIC Coaching to the services our businesses already provide. In business development strategy in Jo’s case or public affairs in mine, the skills we teach at DROP THE MIC Coaching complement and enhance our client’s business goals.
Anything else you feel is important? Anyone can be an effective public speaker and communicator. But most importantly, we believe that becoming an exceptional public speaker is the key to unlocking your full potential.
