The beloved ladies’ luncheon and designer shoe auction, hosted by The Mall at Millenia, will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2024. From humble beginnings — with 100 or so attendees at locations like the Verandah and Albin Polasek Museum & Sculpture Gardens — the fundraiser for Easterseals Florida has raised more than $2 million to provide exceptional services, education, outreach, and advocacy to children and adults with disabilities in our community.

New Nutcracker!
Jorden Morris
IF YOU ENJOY THE HOLIDAY CLASSIC PERFORMED BY ORLANDO BALLET, YOU ARE IN FOR A VERY SWEET TREAT THIS SEASON AS THE ENTIRE PRODUCTION — SETS, COSTUMES, CHOREOGRAPHY — HAS BEEN REIMAGINED BY ARTISTIC DIRECTOR JORDEN MORRIS. FOR THREE YEARS, PLANS AND WORK HAVE COME TOGETHER TO CREATE A BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE TO PAST SHOWS WITH SURPRISINGLY FRESH TWISTS INCLUDING A FLYING CLARA.
C C
onsidering Jorden’s background filled with prestigious ballet organizations and a stint with Cirque du Soleil, this world premiere promises to be a magical experience for kids of all ages. As part of the Ballet’s 50th anniversary season, this Broad-
way-caliber rendition will stay true to the story of a young girl’s love for her favorite Christmas gift and feature Tchaikovsky’s beloved score. But the sets (replacing the nearly 50-year-old ones) are bold and bright with gigantic props including a Ferris wheel that will move. Expect a few other animatronics as well. Although the costumes were still being fitted, we were invited to see the racks of beautifully detailed ensembles — in fact, so gorgeous, it is a shame they cannot be seen up close. The Russian outfits have been redone as a meld of Eastern European and Asian influences, representing an area instead of one country. Jorden felt it was important to drop some of the stereotypes, while still showcasing the world. And while you will think you see fur trimming on the sleeves and collars, it is actually rows and rows of tightly stitched brown tulle like tiny ruffles. Bright green sprite costumes were created for the beginning of the second act and the tiny rats will be dressed in intricately layered fabric pieces resembling fur with long black velveteen tails. The townspeople will be outfitted — a la Downton Abbey — from the 20th century instead of the 19th in a more streamlined elegance with no bustles. “I have done huge reproductions before, and I know what it entails. Basically, it sucks three years of your life that you never get back,” Jorden says with a knowing laugh. “The idea really

thelist came from the board and the organization. The Nutcracker we had been doing was very old. They bought the sets used from Hong Kong and they were already 20 years old. And the costumes were older as well — there wasn’t really a cohesiveness to it. With the company turning 50, and the 50th anniversary season, it was important to introduce a new Nutcracker. Artistically and financially, The Nutcracker is the anchor of the organization.” Jorden credits his team, Orlando Ballet’s Associate Artistic Director Lisa ThornVinzant, award-winning costume and set designer Robert Perdziola, and lighting designer Joseph Walls, with ensuring the dream vision came to life. “We’ve created something very special for Central Florida,” he adds. Don’t miss your chance to see Clara’s enchanting dreams come to life on stage as never before this December 8-24. Weekend matinees include family and sensory-friendly performances. ach year, the Sunday before Thanksgiving, AdventHealth Foundation’s Golden Gala ushers in the holiday season in stellar style. As the longest running gala in Orlando, Golden Gala is an evening filled with heartfelt healthcare messages, community camaraderie and dazzling performers. To successfully produce, it takes a machine with muscle and hustle led by the Golden Gala Circle of Friends formed more than 40 years ago to bring in the sparkle, shine and detailed touches. “For the fourth year in a row, AdventHealth’s Golden Gala will be reimagined as we move our signature event to the beautiful Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Our 42nd annual black-tie gala will 24

feature an unforgettable performance by Sting in the incomparable Steinmetz Hall. Founded by the Circle of Friends more than four decades ago, Golden Gala continues to support vital programs as well as various Centers of Excellence at AdventHealth. The impact of the Circle of Friends is unrivaled in our community, and I am forever humbled and grateful for their generosity, friendship and support,” says Jami Boles, Director of Special Events, AdventHealth Foundation Central Florida. It’s a legacy event that has featured past performers such as Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, Michael Bublé, Martina McBride, Jay Leno, Rascal Flatts, Josh Groban and John Legend. And this year for Golden Gala XLII on November 19, Sting will take center stage in Stein-
metz Hall. As one of the world’s most distinctive solo artists, Sting has received 11 GRAMMY Awards, two Brits, a Golden Globe, an Emmy, four Oscar nominations, a TONY nomination, Billboard Magazine’s Century Award, and MusiCares 2004 Person of the Year. In May 2023, Sting became a Fellow of the Ivors Academy — the highest honor reserved for those who have reshaped and redefined the art and craft of music creation. The Circle of Friends was started in 1981 by a group of ladies who volunteered their time, with the support of AdventHealth Foundation Central Florida (previously Florida Hospital), to plan the inaugural Golden Gala with Pat Boone. In the ensuing years, the Circle has continued to expand and evolve the event while remain-

for eight years and shares: “It always brings a spark depending on the beneficiary of that year’s gala. People have so many things — medical issues — and illnesses that have touched their lives. With Gala, we change the beneficiaries each year so that whatever a person’s passion might be about giving or helping, one of our galas will be touching that. When people come, they see where they fit to give back and what touches their heartstrings hearing how our amazing doctors and nurses at AdventHealth are treating patients and coming up with new ways — things that gala fundraising dollars have made possible.” “For me, Gala has always been the premier event in Orlando — and a premier fundraising event obviously. It’s at the top for philanthropic galas. I love being in the glamour of it all. Golden Gala is all about bringing you’re “A” game and feeling your best and giving our best for our community,” Erika Dunlap adds.
As for the evolution of the event — some was necessary during the pandemic — Erika continues: “We have seen a lot of transformation over the years and the exciting part is we keep getting better. I feel like every year has produced a new iteration of amazing artists, food and event details. The auction baskets are being transformed in the way we present them this year. That’s a signature part of Gala. From the planning to the takeaway, I think this year is going to be the best — totally over-the-top.” “I can’t tell you how thrilled I was when I heard who would be performing this year and that we would be taking over the Dr. Phillips Center. Imagine being in the pinnacle event venue in Orlando with Sting in Steinmetz Hall. I love that it just rolls off the tongue. I can’t imagine a different time and place for raising money for what we need most in our community,” Lee concludes.

EASY ENTERTAINING
HolidayHosting TESSA MCAULIFF, HUNT AND HOSTESS 1. Decide what type of party you would like to have… Is it brunch, cocktails and appetizers, or a sit-down dinner? The guest list can also determine your party. If you are hosting 20 people, then maybe a brunch or cocktail party may be easier than a sit-down dinner. Whichever you choose, there are ways to keep the holidays stress-free. For brunch, instead of waking up at 5am to prepare, opt to create a Lox and Bagel Board, go purchase donuts and sweets from your favorite bakery, and set up a coffee bar. If you’re hosting a cocktail party, make your favorites and order takeout for the rest. You can plate them on your platters and dress them up with fresh herbs and fruits like rosemary and cranberries. For a sit-down dinner, choose a dish that you can make ahead and just keep warm in the oven. I like to keep the sides to a minimum, usually two sides, a salad, and if you don’t have time to bake, buy a few desserts and set up a dessert bar. Ready-made cupcakes look festive topped with fresh berries or holiday candies.
2. Plan ahead. If you need to shop or order food, do so a couple of days in advance. Set your table, food station and bar/ drink station the night before so you can concentrate on the food the day of your party. Make sure you have plenty of items on-hand for any last-minute gatherings. Keep your pantry stocked with crackers, nuts, olives and cheeses. They will last the whole holiday season. Frozen appetizers, champagne, cocktail napkins, mixers for your bar are all things you can get now to be ready ahead of time. If you’re having lots of gatherings, use holiday garland with candles or lights as a centerpiece to last all season long.
3. Create self-serve stations. Many favorite gatherings are the ones where guests can help themselves. This is how I started creating grazing tables because I wanted to be with my guests and not stuck in the kitchen preparing food. I also love a bar cart setup. Just add some garland, lights and ribbon to dress your bar cart up for the holidays. Making a pitcher of holiday cocktails is easy and there’s no mixing and need for lots of extra liquor if you want to keep it simple. A Christmas sangria is light, and everyone loves it. (Recipe on next page). Another fun idea is making holiday ice cubes. You can fill a tray with white cranberry juice and add fresh cranberries, edible stars and rosemary to float in drinks. 38

5. Think of the host or hostess. If you’re not entertaining at home, chances are you will be going to lots of parties this holiday season. Keep hostess gifts like champagne, candles or festive cocktail napkins wrapped and ready to go in a closet. If you’re like me, I’m usually rushing out the door and don’t have time to stop somewhere, so having some gifts already tied with a beautiful ribbon and a tag will be one less thing you have to do. For more tips and hostess gifts, visit our shop Hunt and Hostess in Winter Park.

but also a complete experience. Secure your event date sooner rather than later. It’s better to have more time, than not enough, to plan your holiday party. The details can be accommodated as long as the date is reserved. However, many caterers are able to accommodate on short notice as well. The caterer is invested in your event from the moment you inquire about services! There is flexibility in a caterer’s budget to creatively accommodate the cost of your event. Building the cost of a party is dependent upon the vision and deciding upon wants vs. needs. Your caterer will go through this process with you.
LAURA LAWTON, BASH ORLANDO Confirm your caterer, venue and vendors right away. At the present time, most are booked or have a significant order minimum. Consider hiring an event planner. Not only will you be busier than you realize in the month of December, but you will want to enjoy the party yourself. Event planners have more leverage in making things happen during this busy season. They can also save you money through the valuable relationships they have cultivated over their careers. Give yourself the gift of an event planner. Don’t forget to have cash tips on hand — for your event staff, people making deliveries, and truly everyone that went out of their way for you.

WASTIN’ AWAY in
MARGARITAVILLE
While mourning our own son of a son of a sailor, most of us know Jimmy Buffet’s irreverent, laid-back spirit is still with us — and that’s a good thing. You know the restaurants and resorts, but his life on the water is celebrated through Margaritaville at Sea, a cruising good time where the blender is humming, guitars are strumming, and pirate tales are sure to be coming.
I
n true ‘changes in latitudes, changes in attitudes’ style, this is a party ship — Paradise has undergone multi-million-dollar upgrades and additions since launching in May 2022. It is an older, smaller vessel (658 rooms and 10 decks) that is well-suited for a quick (3-day, 2-night) escape from the Port of Palm Beach to Grand Bahama Island.
There are also options to add a resort package and extend your stay on the island. Shore excursion choices include secluded Crystal Beach (where you can swim with pigs), dolphin encounters, a shark experience, watersports, and relaxing resorts. On-board entertainment is front and center with DJs, bands, dueling pianos, and highenergy song and dance shows happening throughout the day and evening. Casual and comfortable is the rule of the day — and night — with attire that is tropical, and either dressing up or down is acceptable. And hospitality is free flowing with attentive bartenders, servers, deck staff and more. There are five different spots to sip a cocktail — The Hangout, Euphoria Lounge, License to Chill Bar, 12 Volt Pool Bar and Oasis Lounge. Two dining experiences, Fins Dining Room and Port of Indecision, are included in your fare and additional outlets such as JWB Prime Steakhouse, 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill, Frank & Lola’s Pizzeria, and Margaritaville Coffee Shop offer more choices. Among the Paradise’s newer highlights are:
PARADISE PICKLEBALL AT SEA — The ship’s forward deck includes a regulation pickleball court and outdoor lounge space.
KEYS ON THE WATER DUELING PIANO BAR — A lively nightly venue featuring two wickedly talented piano players who encourage audience participation.
STARS ON THE WATER PRODUCTION SHOWS — New shows include Caribbean Heat with energetic music, dance and acrobatics in a musical trip around the islands of the Caribbean, and Radio Margaritaville: LIVE! At Sea will tune into the rhythm of the islands, with live bands, amazing artists, collaborations, and musical storytelling that can only be found in Margaritaville.
CHEESEBURGER IN PARADISE BURGER BAR — At 5 o’Clock Somewhere Bar & Grill, guests can build their own fresh all-beef burger creations with tasty toppings while enjoying ocean views and signature cocktails. margaritavilleatsea.com

Design Behind the Tree by Lindsay Matteoni, MSTR Studio
WHILE SOME OF YOU WERE THINKING ABOUT HALLOWEEN COSTUMES, FALL DÉCOR AND THE END OF HURRICANE SEASON, my team and I were focused on the upcoming Festival of Trees presented by the Council of 101! And you might feel that’s too soon to consider Christmas, but you’re mistaken. Without the prep-time, tree design mockups, securing sponsorships (not always needed but helpful), and pulling together a reliable design team, the trees event might not be the success it is year after year. So, pour yourself a mug of hot cocoa, sit down and cozy up with your favorite blanket, it’s time to start thinking 58

HERE’S WHAT SOME LONG-TIME PARTNERS/PARTICIPANTS HAD TO SAY ABOUT A PAIR TO REMEMBER® ORLANDO:
Brenda Lounsberry and Franni Stevens
“We [The Mall at Millenia and Forbes Company] have been proud supporters of Easterseals Florida for more than 20 years. It’s been our honor to host A Pair to Remember. It gives an opportunity to connect with our community and share, through Easterseals, the wonderful skills, mission, and services that they provide so well.” – Brenda Lounsberry, Marketing Director, The Mall at Millenia
“The mission got me right away, helping a diverse population of individuals, of all ages, with varying developmental, cognitive and physical needs. I visited the Day Break program which really spoke to me because of my own family experiences caring for a grandmother. So, I joined the committee, then later became the chair, then a board member, followed by board chair, and eventually as an employee and member of the development team. This event was my baby, and I am very proud of what it has become, and every single person who has contributed to its success in any way.” – Melixa Carbonell, MA, LMHC, ADHD-CCSP, NCC, and Pair Co-Chair, 2005 – 2009
“By far, A Pair to Remember is one of my favorite events in Central Florida every year! Incredibly fun, super unique, very well done, and for such an amazing cause.” – Jay Edwards, Mission Model and Radio Host, K92.3
Paige Cooper and Melixa Carbonell
“Pair is such a fun way to give back, while learning about and supporting our special needs community. Easterseals meets a need that so many people and families can identify with… whether it’s childcare or senior care. But for Easterseals families, they can’t just get a sitter or tag in a neighbor or mom-friend. Easterseals families face some immense obstacles because of the needs of their loved ones. So, when a family can utilize Day Break or Camp Challenge, it’s truly life-changing. That’s what I hope people realize about Pair. When you attend, when you bid, when you give, you are making someone’s reality better, easing the weight on a mother or father, and giving a child or a senior a place to be accepted, cared for, and happy.” – Marcie Golgoski, Pair committee member, 2011-2015
“I first got involved with Easterseals more than 36 years ago as a result of participating in an event for Easterseals’ Camp Challenge. I wouldn’t have learned what I learned without attending that event. Therefore, my favorite part of A Pair to Remember is that the attendees get to learn more about Easterseals’ incredible programs, our clients and our staff, while also learning what their support means.” – Joe Kern, local, state and national Easterseals board member
“I’ve had the honor to be involved with the most generous and giving community of women who have wrapped themselves around Easterseals through A Pair to Remember for all 20 years of the event. Millions of dollars raised means thousands of services for people with disabilities and those who love them. Building independence, supporting caregivers, and enhancing quality of life is what Easterseals is all about. When my father had dementia and I was his caregiver, we became clients of Easterseals. I felt firsthand the power of the support from a program like Day Break Adult Day Health Care.” – Sue Ventura, President and CEO, Easterseals Florida, Inc. 106

Central Florida Easterseals Programs: Day Break at the Elinor & T. William Miller, Jr. Center in Winter Park is an adult day health care program, serving those with disabilities and/or special needs such as Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related disorders as well as those with stroke recovery, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, autism and other developmental disabilities. Located off State Road 46 in Sorrento, Camp Challenge offers 61 acres of recreation for children and adults with disabilities. Overnight camp allows campers to gain independence and make new friends while providing respite for caregivers and families “Orange Appeal has been a proud media partner of A Pair to Remember since 2010. Publisher Christi Ashby and I have personally enjoyed attending this event every year, and we always comment on how it is one of our favorites — and we go to a LOT of events. But I wanted to do more and joined the committee in 2019 and then volunteered to chair the event in 2023, which grossed a record-breaking $260,000 for Easterseals. I look forward to chairing this special 20th anniversary celebration in 2024 and raising even more money for Easterseals Florida while also continuing to elevate the event.” – Kate Slentz, Pair Chair and Associate Publisher/Editor, Orange Appeal
Easterseals Floridas’ Behavioral Health: FIT (The Families in Training ) and the PLAY (Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters) Project are two behavioral health programs that teach families how to support the social, emotional and behavioral development of their child on the autism spectrum or with other behavioral concerns. Orange County STRIVE (Skills Training Results in Vocational Employment) in Hospitality Program is a 12-week training curriculum from the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute, to prepare individuals ages 15 and up with a disability to work in the hospitality industry. The Disability Navigator Program helps families (with children up to age 22) find the services a child needs to achieve developmental milestones, stay healthy, and thrive in the community. Services range from screening to service referrals, case management, and education on disability topics for community partners and parents.
