Cory Taylor’s Connection to Easterseals
Commercial real estate attorney Cory Taylor has been an ardent supporter, donor, volunteer and advocate for Easterseals Florida since she started volunteering with the organization more than 16 years ago. But when an accident in 2020 left her paralyzed from the chest down, she leaned on her Easterseals family for resources and support and gained a deeper appreciation of the organization’s mission to provide critical services to children and adults with disabilities.
Iwas new to Orlando, and I was working at a firm where our partner was involved with Easterseals. He has three sons with disabilities, and he invited me to a happy hour one evening. I listened to him speak about one of his sons and the challenges he was facing, and I cried. I was so overcome with emotion and knew I had to get involved with this organization,” she explains.
She started by attending a fundraiser, then she joined the committee for the fundraiser, and eventually chaired the fundraiser. She then joined the local board for Easterseals and chaired it before joining the state board, which she also chaired. Her tenure as chair ended about two years ago, but she still serves the organization in whatever capacity that she can — committee member and sponsor for A Pair to Remember® Orlando, advisory board and state board member, and volunteer general counsel. “I do a lot of the contract and lease reviews for them, gratis,” she says. “Most of what I do these days is for Easterseals; since my injury I can’t really work.”
When Cory became disabled — she’s a quadriplegic with no use of her legs or hands — she turned to Easterseals for advice and support, navigating some of the challenges many Easterseals’ clients face.
“I’ve worn just about every hat with Easterseals, and the only exceptions were staff member and client. I’m still not a client but in some sense, I feel like a client because I went to them almost immediately when I got injured and continue to ask for advice and emotional support. The staff and members of the board have become like family to me. Everyone is so committed to
the mission and to be a part of that is so special. But to then be someone who needs some of the services brings it to a whole new level of appreciation,” she shares.
She asked for assistance on how to get an accessible van, what features to look for in a wheelchair, and even what kind of hospital bed she needed in her home when she was first injured. “I have resources and means to get proper care, but a lot of families don’t have that, and I can’t imagine. And I know we have so many potential clients out there who are not being served,” she adds.
Cory was also fortunate to find a caregiver, Beth Nibert, who she trusts and considers family. “I have to put myself in vulnerable positions every day — not being able to use my arms and legs, I have to rely on others, including my caregiver Beth, to put on my makeup, dress me, make my food, etc. I see the campers at Camp Challenge or clients in the adult day care programs — the struggles they are going through — and I feel it now more than ever. Along with that vulnerability is a sense of independence that you get when are able to do things on your own. And that’s what Easterseals programs are trying to do, is help people feel more independent,” she explains.
CENTRAL FLORIDA EASTERSEALS PROGRAMS:
Day Break at the Elinor & T. William Miller, Jr. Center in Winter Park is an adult day health care program, serving those with disabilities and/or special needs such as Alzheimer’s or other dementia-related disorders as well as those with stroke recovery, Parkinson’s disease, multiple sclerosis, autism and other developmental disabilities
Located off State Road 46 in Sorrento, Camp Challenge offers 61 acres of recreation for children and adults with disabilities. Overnight camp allows campers to gain independence and make new friends while providing respite for caregivers and families.
Easterseals Floridas’ Behavioral Health: FIT (Family Intervention Training) and the PLAY Project are two behavioral health programs that teach families how to support the social, emotional and behavioral development of their child on the autism spectrum or other behavioral concerns.
Orange County STRIVE (Skills Training Results in Vocational Employment) in Hospitality Program is a 12-week training curriculum from the American Hotel & Lodging Educational Institute, to prepare individuals ages 15 and up with a disability to work in the hospitality industry.

JOINT GAME CHANGER
NanoNeedle arthroscopy allows Dr. Vonda Wright, sports surgeon and president of Hughston Orthopaedics Southeast in Lake Nona, to perform knee surgeries without incisions. This exciting advancement is the least invasive arthroscopic surgery currently available under local anesthesia, reduces need for post-operative narcotic pain control, and allows rapid recovery.
Dr. Wright developed this outpatient and in-office technique for knee surgery, meniscus debridement and repair, cartilage injuries, and arthritis diagnosis and care. She is progressing the technology for the treatment of shoulders and hips and is the first to perform this range of procedures using nanotechnology in the region.
Patients meeting the criteria for use of nanotechnology do not require formal incisions as the needle-sized, 1.9mm chip-on-tip scope is placed via “ports of entry” under local anesthesia while patients are awake, eliminating the need for general anesthesia and its sequelae. NanoNeedle technology also allows administration of Orthobiologic therapy, such as PRP (platelet-rich plasma) or FDA-approved fat matrix as a source of stem cells, growth factors, and biologic healing matrix.
“NanoScope technology has been a game changer for my patients as it allows them to be partners with me in their own medical care as they see their joints in real time, understand the treatment, and literally walk out of the procedure room with no incisions, require no post-operative narcotics, and often no physical therapy. Their rapid recovery enables less time away from work and play. I believe it is the next leap forward in minimizing patient risk and optimizing recovery in musculoskeletal surgery,” says Dr. Vonda Wright, MD, MS.
For more information on this innovation in treatment of musculoskeletal pain contact Dr. Wright at 407-965-4114.

AN A DVENT H EALTH FOR WOMEN SERIES
Jillyan McKinney: PROGRESS not PERFECTION
Jillyan McKinney was thriving — she was CEO of Littleton Adventist Hospital in Colorado and had recently been named one of Denver’s 40 Under 40 professionals; she was the mom of two young sons, 4 and almost 1, when her husband suffered a massive stroke and caused her to reassess her priorities and make some life changes, including a move to Florida with a new position as President and CEO of AdventHealth Medical Group South Region.
When I had that experience with my husband’s stroke, it really was a wake-up call in regard to my own mortality,” she says. She took an inventory of personal values and evaluated if what she was doing in everyday life affirmed those values. “It helped me realize the values that I was not living were around my health, my community and my impact,” she adds.
Jillyan and her husband both took charge of their health — he currently exercises every day and has his sleep apnea and blood pressure under control. Jillyan has lost 120 pounds and enjoys doing physical activities with her family again. “My goals around my health weren’t about weight, they were about things I could get to do again with my family without getting tired — playing soccer and riding bikes. When you’re not healthy, it’s hard to be present, so I’ve just found a difference in our ability to be present,” she explains.
In order to maintain her healthy lifestyle, Jillyan knew she needed to make some changes around her community and impact. While living in Colorado, she realized she craved being closer to family (her dad lives with them and helps with the boys) so
Jillyan bravely went to AdventHealth — she has worked within the company for 18 years — and asked for a role that would not only bring her closer to family but also broaden her career horizons.
She accepted the role of President and CEO of AdventHealth Medical Group
South Region and moved to Florida a little more than a year ago. “By moving closer to our family since that stroke, we’ve had an opportunity to spend more time with them. My husband’s family is in the Bahamas and my sister lives in Georgia. My dad still lives with us,” she adds. COVID played a role, but in Colorado their community was limited, so she’s enjoying reconnecting with family and friends.
“Part of managing of physical health has been really managing our emotional health, so you’re in the right headspace to be able to logically tackle your physical health. A lot of my weight was from stress eating. For me to maintain the physical part, I need to maintain my mental/emotional well-being and a huge factor for that is connection,” Jillyan explains.
As a busy CEO responsible for leading more than 3,500 employees, including 1,300 physicians and advanced practitioners at more than 200 medical office locations across 10 Florida counties, she’s also learning to lean into her support system and seek more help, making time for date nights, visiting friends, and even a 40th birthday celebration trip to Costa Rica with some family members.
“You’ve got to ask for help where you
need help; you’ve got to get tools where you need tools. And it doesn’t mean you’re less-than because you asked for that. It’s not all going to be perfectly balanced at the same time. You have to have some measure of grace for yourself that allows you to be imperfect and to acknowledge progress, so you actually get fueled to do the next step,” she says.
In 2023, her priorities remain the same as she continues to enjoy activities with her husband and sons, now 5 and 2, which may even include karate soon; expand physician partnerships and improve consumer experiences in her role as a medical group CEO; and reconnect and reprioritize her personal relationships and faith. “This is what my life looks like today — not perfect but progress,” she says.

WORK HARD, PLAY HARD, ROCK HARD AT HARD ROCK DAYTONA BEACH
by Kate SlentzOpen since 2018 in the former iconic Desert Inn (the same signature curve of the main tower remains), Hard Rock Daytona Beach continues to be a rockin’ destination for tourists and locals alike, with even new offerings in 2023 for adults and families. We recently visited for a family stay and
then I went back again for a girlfriends’ getaway and the property was the perfect low-key, chill destination for each outing.
During our family weekend, the kids couldn’t get enough of the guitar-shaped children’s pool, while my girlfriends and I enjoyed lounging in the poolside daybeds and beach-view cabanas during our “mom’s retreat.” But since my visits, Hard Rock Daytona is hard at work on some enhancements — adding a new infinityedge oversized hot tub and renovating the shallow guitar pool to a standard-depth pool — both scheduled to open in January.
The property also converted its Roxity Youth Club into a full arcade, offering high-volume entertainment for kids of all ages. While the kids are playing, the adults can relax with a spa treatment at the adjacent Rock Spa & Salon. And everyone can find something to enjoy at the all-day dining restaurant, Sessions, that begins indoors
and flows out to the alfresco bar and oceanside terrace.
And there’s always something new to discover at the property as memorabilia is added or rotated. On the weekends, guests can groove to the live DJ entertainment by the pool in the afternoons or enjoy an evening concert at the bandshell at the Wave Terrace. We recommend booking an oceanfront room to enjoy the music from your balcony! Sometimes the property hosts special ticketed events, but the majority of the live entertainment is free for hotel guests — a schedule of events can be found on the property’s website (HardRockHotelDaytonaBeach.com).
And for the best rates, be sure to join Unity by Hard Rock, a global loyalty program where you can earn and redeem rewards at participating Hard Rock Hotels, Cafes, Casinos, and more. Learn more or sign up at UnitybyHardRock.com

GO RED forwomen
Go Red for Women is the American Heart Association’s signature women’s initiative and is a comprehensive platform designed to increase women’s heart health awareness and serve as a catalyst for change to improve the lives of women globally.
It’s no longer just about wearing red; it’s no longer just about sharing heart health facts. It’s about ALL women making a commitment to stand together with Go Red and taking charge of their own heart health as well as the health of those they can’t bear to live without.
Cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women and claims more women’s lives than all forms of cancer combined. Women experience unique stages through their lives which affect both overall health and cardiovascular health. Unique risk factors specific to women are pregnancy and menopause.
Women, especially Black and Hispanic women, are disproportionally impacted by heart disease and stroke, and research shows heart attacks are on the rise in younger women. Yet younger generations of women are less likely to be aware of their greatest health threat, including
knowing the warning signs of heart attacks and strokes. That’s why it’s important for all women to take charge of their heart health and encourage others to do the same. Losing even one woman to cardiovascular disease is too many.
We want to inspire women with this call to action:
• Awareness is critical. All women need to know that cardiovascular disease is the No. 1 killer of women.
• “Know Your Numbers” — the key personal health numbers that help determine risk for heart disease: total cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar and body mass index.
• Know your family history and talk to your doctor about heart disease and stroke.
• Take charge of your health to lower your risk of cardiovascular disease with tools and resources from Go Red for Women on physical activity, healthy eating, controlling blood pressure and managing sleep and stress.

Circle of Red members are leaders in their communities and families. For many members, the fight against heart disease is personal.
As some of our greatest champions of the Go Red for Women movement, our Circle of Red members not only help save lives, but they are the heart of our mission.

Dear Friends & Heart Heroes,
Message from the CHAIR Kimberly Brown
I offer my sincerest thanks to each of you for joining me at this year’s Go Red for Women luncheon as we recognize and honor the incredible impact we have as a community to save lives, advance research, and elevate prevention efforts. As we embark on a new year, each of you have made a difference in the ways we fight cardiac illnesses. As the signature sponsor for 2023, AdventHealth is grateful for your support.
The 2023 Go Red for Women celebration marks the first time I have served as chair of the campaign. It has truly been an incredible honor! While I have been in healthcare and driven by serving others for over 18 years, a new passion was ignited for this work when my son Carter was born with congenital heart defects in 2015. The experience of multiple surgeries and eventually a pacemaker was challenging for my family. However, we found an uplifting partner in the American Heart Association; a partnership that meant Carter’s illness had a greater purpose of helping others in health crises. Our theme this year is “Be a Hero.” For Carter and others, having cardiovascular disease may be out of their control because of genetics or diabetes. For many others cardiac illnesses could have been prevented. We each play an important role in that prevention and can be heroes for our communities and one another.
The Go Red for Women movement raises awareness about the signs and symptoms of heart disease and stroke and how to control the associated risk factors. Thanks to the Go Red campaign, the Little Red Dress is now a symbol recognized around the country, and women are increasingly aware that heart disease and stroke are the #1 causes of death for women. The movement also raises funds for life-saving research and prevention right here in our community.

Kimberly Brown Executive Director, Organizational Culture, AdventHealthHEART MONTH — “BE THE BEAT”
According to the American Heart Association, about 90 percent of people who suffer out-of-hospital cardiac arrests die. If you are called on to give CPR in an emergency, you will most likely be trying to save the life of someone you love: a spouse, a parent or a friend.
February is American Heart Month, and the American Heart Association is shedding a light on the importance of knowing Hands-Only CPR. This year’s heart month urges people to “be the beat” it takes to keep someone alive by learning the two simple
steps it takes to save a life.
Step 1: If a teen or adult in your home suddenly collapses, call 911 immediately.
Step 2: Place one hand on top of the other as shown in the video and push hard and fast on the victim’s chest.

2023 WOMEN OF THE YEAR: Vibrant Visionaries
Casandra Matej, Shannon Fitzgerald and Dr. Laine Powell photographed by TAMARA KNIGHT; Kathy Ramsberger and Sibille Hart Pritchard photographed by NORMA MOLINA in the STEINMETZ HALL LOBBY at the DR. PHILLIPS CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
SHANNON FITZGERALD, executive director of Mennello Museum of American Art, is overseeing a $25 million capital campaign to expand the museum; CASANDRA MATEJ, president & CEO of Visit Orlando, leads the branding, marketing and selling of the Orlando destination on a global scale; DR. LAINE POWELL, founder and executive director of Tech Sassy Girlz, is growing the nonprofit dedicated to engaging underrepresented girls in STEM; SIBILLE HART PRITCHARD, accomplished businesswoman and I-Drive Business Improvement District chairperson, Florida International Affairs Foundation board member and Dr. Phillips Center executive board vice-chair, continues her legacy of community service; and KATHY RAMSBERGER, president and CEO of the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts, successfully executed capital and annual campaigns in private gifts exceeding $209 million, culminating with the opening of Steinmetz Hall..
Casandra Matej, Shannon Fitzgerald and Dr. Laine Powell Kathy Ramsberger and Sibille PritchardFor more than 20 years, she has served the public in art museums, creating and sustaining exhibitions and programs that challenge, enrich, educate, support creatives, and impart meaning. Advancing art and art history as fluid and relevant to contemporary society — from the past to the present — drives her ambition to reach more in our community, as she regularly witnesses the impact art has on people. Since coming to the Mennello Museum, owned and operated by the City of Orlando, in 2015, she set forth a path to advance the visibility and value of the museum, its collection, and programs to reach more people who live and visit Orlando and Central Florida.
In addition to strengthening the Museum’s outreach, programming, exhibits and collections, she is overseeing a $25 million capital campaign that will result in a 40,000-squarefoot museum facility, integrated around the current 12,000-square-foot museum building on Lake Formosa, designed to preserve and reimagine its green space, the intimacy of the Dr. Phillips Home, walking and bike paths, and sculpture garden.
Shannon Fitzgerald EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, MENNELLO MUSEUM OF AMERICAN ARTOf what accomplishments are you most proud, and as a vibrant visionary, what do you hope to accomplish in the next year or two?
I am proud to be part of a team helping to define what a world-class art museum is and can be in the 21st century. The museum has enriched the public through exhibitions, education, publications and events celebrating the diversity of American art for 23 years. We are now poised to embark on a mission-driven expansion that will advance our service to excellence in the community with a state-of-the-art facility and sculptural garden that beautifully merges architecture and nature to create an inclusive experience for all. I am fortunate to be part of a dynamic group of community leaders in a public-private partnership that believes in our goals of achieving a bright and maintainable future together.
What or who motivates you?
A visionary plan to make the museum more cohesive and increase public access motivates me. I am motivated to share with more people how the diversity of culture informs innovative art, impacts society and improves communities. Our vibrant plan has the potential to merge art, education, nature, respite and sustainability in a well-mapped way that contributes to the cultural and economic prosperity of our community.
Who or what inspires you?
My direct engagement with artists, writers and thinkers inspires me. Those whose work creates new meaning across cultures and time inspire me to want to share it and make it accessible and appreciated.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?
A mentor once told me to hold on to a big ‘new’ idea/project I was working on; he told me to put it in my back pocket, if only for the moment. That project and others I have ‘momentarily’ put in my back pocket have since been realized. I am grateful for that advice, as it has helped me refine my determination.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever given?
I am not sure, but I try to empower and support the many young artists and women I have worked with; to encourage voice, expand knowledge, and share opportunities as they work to distinguish themselves in the field.

“In art and dream may you proceed with abandon. In life may you proceed with balance and stealth.” – Patti Smith

Casandra Matej
PRESIDENT & CEO, VISIT ORLANDOOf what accomplishments are you most proud, and as a vibrant visionary, what do you hope to accomplish in the next year or two?
For the last two years, I set four key priorities: discovery, recovery, partnerships and DEI initiatives. Discovery was critical as someone new to the area, so that I could listen and identify new areas of opportunity, forge new connections, and personally experience the destination. Part of discovery is looking at new opportunities to drive toward our vision.
For recovery, working toward the full economic recovery of our destination is at the heart of everything we do at Visit Orlando. Diversity, Equity and Inclusion must be intentional and we are determined to continue to drive positive change. We have the platform to tell the diverse story of Orlando.
At the beginning of 2022, we introduced a three-year strategic plan to outline Visit Orlando’s new vision (to be the most visited, welcoming, and inclusive destination in the world) and mission (inspire, promote and grow global travel to Orlando for economic and community benefit), to elevate Orlando’s brand positioning and plan to welcome 80 million visitors by the end of 2024.
We created a first-of-its-kind partnership with Orlando Economic Partnership to launch one joint brand for our region, “Unbelievably Real,” elevating Orlando’s culinary community through the launch of the MICHELIN Guide; and re-establishing partnerships with organizations like Brand USA and VISIT FLORIDA.
Who or what inspires you?
So many inspire me! However, one that you cannot Google or that you would know is my grandmother, Albina. She inspired me and was an example of strong work ethic and had an overall grit to get things done.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?
Dress for the position you want, not the one you have. It may sound frivolous, but it goes beyond just selecting clothes in the morning. It’s a mindset that you as an individual take on to believe you can grow into a role, and it is about the personal brand story that you are telling others. If you dress the part, it helps others see you in that next role, and it helps you envision yourself in that role.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever given?
Walk through opportunity’s door! Sometimes people need a nudge to do some self-reflection. That’s part of being a leader. It isn’t telling people what to do, it is asking the questions to lead to success for all.
Favorite quote or mantra?
Better Together… greater success comes when working collaboratively. You cannot do it alone.
Any personal info you would like to add?
One of the most frequent questions I get asked as a female leader with a family (schoolaged children) is, how do you manage the work-life balance? I honestly don’t think there really is work-life balance. To me, it’s not balance, it is setting priorities. In a course of a day, you have 24 hours to set priorities against, so you need to be thoughtful about where you focus your time and be present no matter which priority you choose.
Casandra is the first female CEO in the non-profit organization’s 37-year history. She has been named one of the 50 Most Powerful People by Orlando magazine, a Game Changer by the Orlando Business Journal, listed among the 500 Most Influential Event Professionals list by BizBash, and recognized as one of the Top 25 Women in the Meetings Industry by Meetings & Conventions magazine.
With three decades of service in the travel industry, she is an active leader engaged in driving tourism on the national, state and local levels. Her current board involvement includes the U.S. Travel Association, VISIT FLORIDA, Orlando Economic Partnership, Central Florida Hotel & Lodging Association, Downtown Orlando Partnership, Florida Citrus Sports, and Air Team Orlando, which helps recruit and maintain air travel to the region. Prior to joining Visit Orlando, Casandra spent 10 years as president and CEO of Visit San Antonio.
Laine is vice president of human resources and training/project manager for AceApplications, LLC, a technology solutions and staffing provider that works with businesses, schools and government agencies, delivering custom software, mobile and web development, cloud applications, IT staffing, IT consulting, and technology sales.
She is also founder and executive director of Tech Sassy Girlz, a non-profit organization dedicated to changing the lives of underrepresented girls in middle and high school to engage in STEM-related topics and inspire their career interests. Tech Sassy Girlz develops the next generation of STEMsavvy, college-bound girls through college preparation, career readiness and mentoring. She created the organization to address the critical shortage of women and minorities being represented in high-tech STEM careers.
Laine is a strong advocate of education and hard work and recently completed a doctoral degree in instructional technology and distance education from Nova Southeastern University. Among her awards and accolades, she has been recognized by the Heart of Florida United Way as a 2022 Change Maker, one of Onyx Magazine’s 2022 Women on the Move, Orlando Business Journal’s 2021 Women Who Mean Business, and received the 2021 WTS International Rosa Parks Diversity Leadership award.
Dr. Laine Powell FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR, TECH SASSY GIRLZOf what accomplishments are you most proud, and as a vibrant visionary, what do you hope to accomplish in the next year or two?
We are thrilled to celebrate the 10th anniversary of our annual Tech Sassy Girlz Day Conference. Our goal a decade ago was to increase awareness of STEM career opportunities and services for middle and high school girls by increasing participation, retention and advancement of girls and women in STEM. Since that time, we have made exciting progress, but there is still work to do. We are excited about ensuring that the pipeline we’re creating fosters a path the girls can take, as they progress through our program. As the future generation, these girls are the leaders that are continuing to change the face of STEM and are doing amazing things.
What or who motivates you?
Women currently represent only 27% of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields in the United States. Black and Hispanic women combined only make up 5% of women in computing. These statistics are alarming and the reason why I founded Tech Sassy Girlz to introduce middle and high school girls to STEM. The girls in our program motivate me. Their curiosity and drive for learning are infectious!
Who or what inspires you?
My parents inspire me. They both immigrated from Haiti to the United States. Although my mother died when I was young, I learned that she migrated to the U.S. first. She put herself through school and became a nurse to provide a path for my dad and two older brothers to migrate to the U.S. years later. My parents came to this country with little to nothing and I’m inspired by their sacrifices, tenacity and grit in providing a better life for our family.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?
The best piece of advice I’ve received is, “Your voice matters and never stop using it to help others.” The first time one of my mentors said this to me, I stopped what I was doing immediately! It was at that moment that I recognized the importance of advocating for others, especially our youth. And on the toughest days, I’m reminded of Congresswoman Val Demings’ mantra, “Never tire.”
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever given?
Whatever it is that you want to do, like Nike, just do it, and pursue it relentlessly!

“There is no limit to what we as women can accomplish.” – First Lady Michelle Obama
Sibille Hart Pritchard ARTS & CULTURE ADVOCATE
Of what accomplishments are you most proud, and as a vibrant visionary, what do you hope to accomplish in the next year or two?
I am most proud of the completion of Steinmetz Hall [at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts] and Harriett’s Orlando Ballet Centre. My involvement with Harriett made it happen — she was such a wonderful person, always giving to the community. I just worked on the United Nations 77th Anniversary Ball where they honored Peter [her husband] posthumously with the Global Conservation Award. I have a long personal involvement with the UN.
One of the things I am very excited about — and it is UN related — is the first international film festival to be held in Bhutan, a historic, royal country. The king and queen were at the UN Ball and under their patronage, I will be chairing with a friend of mine. It will be in 2024 and we will start working on it immediately through a company we started call Hart & Harmony. That’s my future: working on things that are related to peace and harmony.
Locally, I am very excited about the opening of the jazz club, Judson’s, at the Dr. Phillips Center and bringing in more diversity programs. I am very happy to be vice-chair of the board.
What or who motivates you?
It’s hard to say something specific because I am more of a seat of the pants person and not really a planner. I am just motivated by life itself. I think of every day as a new opportunity — and not an opportunity for success but for happiness.
Who or what inspires you?
What really inspires me is good energy. That’s because I am Buddhist in philosophy. It’s all about balance and living in harmony, creating your own world and not being boxed in by expectations.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received?
When I was about 6 my father told me don’t ever let anyone put you in your place because your place is wherever you want it to be. I live by that.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever given?
Be yourself. Be authentic because that’s what’s important. It’s nice to be inspired by others but you don’t want to be them.
Favorite quote or mantra?
“We know what we are, but we know not what we may be.” – William Shakespeare

I have become an absolute devotee of Formula 1 racing. I am obsessive and drive people nuts talking about it. I got into it from the engineering point of view — I can tell you everything about how the cars are made, the aerodynamics, tire pressure for different speeds, etc.

Kathy Ramsberger PRESIDENT & CEO, DR. PHILLIPS CENTER for the PERFORMING ARTSOf what accomplishments are you most proud, and as a vibrant visionary, what do you hope to accomplish in the next year or two?
The most important and rewarding accomplishments has been building an amazing team to design, construct and operate the arts center. It continues to be a great journey with great people. Since 2014, we have successfully operated multiple theaters, the Frontyard Festival, and dynamic event spaces, sometimes all active at the same time, welcoming hundreds of thousands of guests, students, artists and professionals each year. It’s amazing to watch guests from every walk of life come together to experience something special.
Specific to this year, we opened our third theater, the incredible Steinmetz Hall, which fulfilled the original vision of the arts center as designed almost two decades ago in 2003. I am especially thankful to work for our remarkable, entrepreneurial board of directors. They have continually led and supported our project, vision and mission. It’s rewarding to work alongside them every day.
Looking ahead, we will complete our fourth theater, Judson’s, which is our 150-seat cabaret theater. We are also focused on completing the development of our 9-acre campus, curating and producing our own content, expanding our arts and wellness initiatives, and continuing to enhance our vision of Arts For Every Life® throughout the region.
What or who motivates you?
Happy and fulfilled guests, partners, artists, clients and team members. Personally, family and friends.
Who or what inspires you?
Our incredible board of directors and fantastic team. Personally, family.
What’s the best piece of advice you have ever received? Commit to excellence.

To Have and To Hold
While a bride’s gown is a one-day wear, her wedding day accessories — if thoughtfully procured — can be worn beyond, true treasures to last a lifetime. Local jewelers share some suggestions and special pieces custom made for brides.
This 18k yellow gold blue sapphire Mum ring was made for a bride to wear on her wedding day (and beyond). These blue sapphires were pulled from her grandmother’s ring that was given to her by her mother. She was very close with her grandmother and asked me if I could repurpose the stones into something new that could be her “something blue.” She loved my diamond Mum ring in our collection, so we made her this custom version.
– Lauren Sigman, Lauren Sigman CollectionI made these moonstone and pink sapphire Sarah Lily earrings for a bride. She wanted long earrings to wear with her wedding dress that wasn’t the typical pearl. I found these rainbow moonstones and wrapped them in 14k yellow gold. We added a little pop of color with the pink sapphire Sarah Lilies that added a bit of whimsy and complemented the pink flowers she was carrying down the aisle.
An irresistible blue sapphire to wear for your “something blue” on your wedding day.
Goldsmith and jewelry designer Almut Belote created this elegant ring that features a stunning blue sapphire. This ring is a rare treasure and is available in the Thornton Park studio where all of Almut’s jewelry is handcrafted.
Superbly elegant with its hidden hinge and snap closure, these white gold or platinum cuff bracelets can be customized with sapphires, diamonds or other precious gemstones.
The Kwiat “Starry Night” necklace is the perfect wedding day jewel. The unique setting makes the diamonds appear to float on the skin and it really packs the sparkle. Diamond studs are also a traditional wedding day staple. If the bride’s dress is more intricate, diamond studs are complementary without competing. Kwiat Diamonds are available exclusively at Be On Park in Winter Park.
The Oliva earrings ($299 SRP) feature a multifaceted halo drop style that allows movement between the layers of stones creating a fierce sparkle that can be admired from afar. They are the perfect finishing touch to a wedding gown. View the collection exclusively at The Wedding Ring Store by Bay Hill Jewelers in Winter Park.

The Glass Knife uses the freshest and highest quality ingredients, because they want to make sure each cake tastes as beautiful as it looks. Some of the delicious flavors include: Almond Cake/White Chocolate Mousse & Apricot Jam Filling; Vanilla Cake/Vanilla Mousse Filling; Red Velvet Cake/Cream Cheese Filling; Lemon Lavender Cake/Blueberry Buttercream Filling; Vanilla Cake/Strawberry Jam & Custard Filling; Chocolate Cake/Chocolate Mousse Filling; and Chocolate Cake/ Salted Caramel Buttercream Filling.
They also specialize in personalized service that starts with a tasting, however, before you arrive, they suggest that you bring an inspiration package that may include: stationery, fabric swatches, pictures of floral arrangements, attire, and centerpieces, and any other elements that reflect your style so they can share your design vision.
The tasting is approximately 45 minutes for two guests. During that time, you are introduced to your culinary team, taste three of the most popular flavor profiles, and start to collaborate on your bespoke creation. Champagne, coffee and/or tea service are also offered. Afterward you receive a sketch of your cake, and the process begins.
The team recommends ordering a minimum of four months and a maximum of 18 months in advance of your wedding date. Although, they may be able to accommodate requests of less than four months.
As part of their exceptional service, they insist on delivery (included within a 20-mile radius) to protect and perfectly set up your cake. In addition to cakes, Weddings By The Glass Knife also offers rehearsal dinner desserts, “sweet & savory” boxes for family and friends as they prepare for the big , and exquisite dessert tables.

Their story: We met at the start of our first year of business school while attending Duke’s Fuqua School of Business in Durham, NC. We quickly became friends, and it only took Pratik a few months to muster up the courage to ask me out. We hit it off quickly despite coming from very different backgrounds and cultures. After dating two years in business school and moving to Dallas for new jobs, we were coming up on our 3-year anniversary when we decided to take a road trip on the East Coast, hopping between friends’ weddings. We made a stop in Durham along the way and Pratik proposed at one of our favorite spots from our time in school, the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club. We couldn’t have been happier to get engaged at the place where it all began!
Ceremony and reception: Friday:
The celebrations started Friday at Signia by Hilton Bonnet Creek with a traditional Indian wedding event, the Baraat, a dancing procession consisting of the groom’s family and friends. Pratik entered on a horse as he came to meet my family and celebrate the start of the wedding. We then hosted a Hindu wedding ceremony under a traditional Mandap. The priest led us through several religious customs with our families. Later that evening,
we celebrated with a Sangeet (Musical Party). This night was filled with several dance performances and speeches from friends and family. Saturday: Our Christian ceremony took place at St. Luke’s Methodist Church, where I grew up attending with my family. Following the ceremony, we moved to the Four Seasons Resort Orlando for an outdoor cocktail hour filled with market lights, and a view of the sunset. Our approach to Saturday’s décor was glamorous Florida-chic, leaning into greenery, palm fronds, white florals, with pops of gold throughout the evening. The reception was brought to life with supper club tables, a custom designed stage for the band, a monogrammed dancefloor, and an array of floral. An after party followed on
the adjoining terrace featuring late-night snacks, a photobooth, and more.
Personal thoughts: We couldn’t have been more excited! Given our unique blending of cultures, there were so many elements of the wedding we were looking forward to, so we were just thrilled to see it all come to life. Once the weekend arrived, we were ready to get the party started and celebrate this monumental moment with family and friends!
Where they are now: We now live in Dallas, TX. I work as a Marketing Manager for Doritos at Frito-Lay and Pratik is at EYParthenon as a Director in the Strategy & Transactions service line.
The Wedding of Emma Hayes and Martin Smith
September 21,
Date: 2022 Coordination: Brian Joyce, Flourish Productions Photography: Joanna Moore Photography Officiant: Harry Rubi, Sensational Ceremonies Catering: Arthur’s Catering & Events Cake: It’s Tasty Too! Band: Tom Sartori Band/The Florida Wedding Band Floral and Décor: Richard Streitler, Flourish Productionsr Hair & Makeup: Kiss This MakeupTheir story: We met in March 2019 through a dating website. Neither of us was looking for a marriage but we knew that we were life partners and soulmates. In less than a year, brought about by a global pandemic, we decided to live under one roof and that sealed our fate. In the first weekend we could stay away overnight, Martin whisked me off to a beautiful English hotel and popped the question.
Ceremony and reception: We wanted a small, intimate wedding with our closest family and friends, and with Martin’s love for theme parks chose a beautiful villa at Reunion Resort in Kissimmee. Planning and working with the team at Flourish Productions, we developed a super glamorous theme focusing on the use of draping, crystals, blossom trees and candles — transforming the internal architecture of the villa.
Personal thoughts: It was overwhelming, seeing the villa transformed into a magical, glamorous space, which only added to the romance and emotion on the day. Having just 26 witness our vows increased the intensity of our ceremony and despite both being highly emotional, the moment of saying ‘I do’ was by far the most powerful moment of our relationship.
Where they are now: We’ve just purchased a beautiful home in Staffordshire, England, which we’re about to spend a year redeveloping. In the meantime, life remains busy running our respective businesses and looking after our children. Travel is a big part of our life and we recently spent two weeks in Antigua. We have a second home in Spain, so no doubt with our housing project in full swing, we’ll get to spend lots of time enjoying the Spanish sunshine.

Their story: Travis and I met the old fashioned way… Match.com. We initially went out on just four dates, but I was often traveling for work and Travis was in the process of moving. Life got in the way and the potential of a relationship just wasn’t there. Two years later we reconnected through the magic of Facebook’s “Friend Recommendation” algorithm and the rest is history. Timing really is everything!
Ceremony and reception: We married at the First Congregational Church of Winter Park and held the reception just across the street at The Alfond Inn. It was important to me for the weeding to be timeless and classic with some fun touches here and there. We opted for a black and white look with a big band feel.
Personal thoughts: I felt somewhat stressed but relieved as the day carried on. I’m a Type A person who loves to host gatherings. That typically means I am executing the details myself but that’s almost impossible to do on your wedding day. I was initially concerned that some details would not come to fruition. I quickly realized that concern was an absolute waste of time with Michele Butler, Fairbanks Florist, and The Alfond Inn handling the day. They did not miss one single thing!
Where they are now: We live in St. Augustine, and plan to stay here until my stepdaughter graduates high school. At that point, we are considering a relocation to New York City. We are soaking in all the benefits of our suburban lifestyle while we can, but look forward to seeing where life takes us.
