The Joy of Just for Fun
Remember when summers were super simple? Bike rides in the neighborhood, dripping popsicles, quick pool dips, hours at the beach and exploring until dusk. Before the craziness of fall schedules, give yourself permission to do some just for fun things. It might mean a long overdue get together with the girls, lazing on a float or in a hammock with a good, guilty read; grilling your favorite foods for a casual family meal; trying a
relaxing new activity; penciling in skip days on your calendar; or slowly devouring that double-scoop ice cream cone. Feel free to be a kid again!
A trending just for fun party theme is Palm Royale, a nostalgic nod to the Apple TV series where everyone glides around the pool in their 1969-esque ensembles. Bright hues, wild prints, lots of embellishments and over-the-top jewelry. We have been to several recently and don’t see the
concept leaving anytime soon. Taking a moment, or a much-needed break, isn’t being lazy — it’s taking care of you. The respite gives you a chance to reenergize, rejuvenate and reset. Indulge in the fun things and really live in the moments as, unlike in childhood, summer days are fleeting. This year, don’t just dip your toe into summer, take a deep dive.

Keepsake Sketches
Who wouldn’t want to be the subject of a flattering fashion illustration? Jaison Radcliff has been creating quite the buzz at events from glam galas, ladies’ luncheons and conferences to private parties and pop-ups with his on-the-spot drawings designed to delight. His attention to the details — statement earrings, embellishments and showy shoes — make the keepsakes even more personal.
His company, The Paper Bar Co. started with the encouragement of his partner, Andrew Browne, who took Jaison’s tossed-out sketches and turned them into holiday cards.
After friends wanted to know where to find them, the illustration business took off from an Etsy site and expanded into a line of products (notebooks, bags, mugs, pillows, pouches and cards) and live illustration sessions.
The team has recently expanded to include several carefully trained artists. Depending on the demand, he may bring one with him, but always under his watchful eye. The drawings can be customized with logos or messages, and a recent auction package even featured personalized items including a tote bag.
“What I love most is seeing the reactions and excitement of each guest. The ability to make someone smile is priceless,” Jaison says. thepaperbarcompany.com

A groundbreaking Broadway play, a dark comedy first seen as a PlayFest reading, the Shakespeare Fire and Reign Series, and an award-winning Broadway musical will highlight Orlando Shakes’ 2024-25 season.

Due to building renovations that will impact the Lowndes Shakespeare Center, Orlando Shakes’ season is shortened for 2024-25. For more information, visit orlandoshakes.org
“Next season will be one of the shortest since we moved into our Loch Haven Park home in 2001, and for very good reason, but it will not diminish the quality of work that Central Florida has come to expect of us,” says Jim Helsinger, who will be entering his 30th season as artistic director with Orlando Shakes.
Under the direction of Artistic Director Jorden Morris, Orlando Ballet’s 2024-25 season will feature Shakespeare’s classic story of

Inspired by Ashley’s Southern California roots, Ashley Snell Collection brings coastal cool loungewear mixed with bright tropical hues to her designs. She established the brand in 2019 when she moved to Orlando with her family. She is proud to offer inclusive (XXS – 4XL) sizing, empowering women of all body types. Her collection can be shopped at her store in Winter Park Village or online at ashleysnellcollection.com
BEAT THE HEAT TRY NEW MOVES
If you are a runner, walker, pickle baller or tennis enthusiast, summer is tough with the heat, humidity and afternoon rain showers, but it’s a great time to check out an indoor workout.
BODYBAR Pilates
Newly opened in SODO, this gleaming studio offers a variety of classes. It’s more than just Reformers. BODYBAR classes are rooted in Reformer Pilates techniques and are original, challenging, and anything but boring with an emphasis on community and connection. Local franchisee Kimberly Dias has plans to open more locations in Central Florida including Windermere, Lake Nona and Winter Park.
“I have been a Pilates instructor for about 10 years and before that I was a nurse. And growing up I was a competitive gymnast so working out was engrained in me. I went into nursing because I was interested in health and wellness. Then I found Pilates and it’s based on anatomy,
and it was very aligned with what I’ve always done,” she says.
As a nursing and business major, she was not sure how to combine those but this opportunity was the perfect fit. She was teaching classical Pilates out of her house, but she was looking for something that incorporated more strength training. She found BODYBAR Pilates and went to a class in Dallas and discovered it was exactly what she had been trying to do.
“We have classical classes and then others that are more athletic. I have done a lot of training, and the company also has continuing education through the franchise. They have their own extensive training program for instructors,” she explains. There are 16 instructors now at her studio.
The classes are currently limited to 13 at this location due to space constraints. “It’s hard for people to do private sessions — it’s expensive and availability is harder. I felt like this is more accessible and we have about 10 classes a day, from 6am until 8:30pm. We are big on community. I want to focus on our members and do events — hopefully they will meet new friends here,” she explains.
With the SODO location, Kimberly is seeing a lot of nurses joining, but she expects to have a diverse group of members moving forward. “Pilates can be intimidating, but everyone is welcome here. All we want to do is support you. We are excited about the community we are building already,” she adds. There are some special offers available as well. bodybarpilates.com/studios/orlando-sodo/
The Bar Method
Celebrating 13 years, The Bar Method Orlando-Winter Park, located in Winter Park Village, is where the Bar Babes, as they affectionately call themselves, get fit. Franchisee Karen Moreno did ballet growing up and was always into fitness.
An elementary school teacher who took time off to raise her children, she was itching to get back into something when she heard about a bar workout while on a trip.
“I came home and tried to find somewhere to do it, but there wasn’t anything here. I went online and ordered DVDs and started doing the workout. I thought it was an amazing concept and workout, so I kept researching and finally found information on owning a studio,” she says.

The lightbulb went off and she started reaching out to the corporate office. “It was a very small mom-and-pop operation back then. It was just the creator Burr Leonard, and her ex-husband, who were still business partners, in Northern California. I flew out to San Francisco to meet with them and got approved,” she explains.
In addition to being a very encouraging and welcoming community, The Bar Method is focused on safety and effectiveness. “All of our exercises and innovation are guided by physical therapists. They test and tweak everything. The movements are sustainable — meaning you can do them forever — we have clients in their 20s up to their 80s. That’s what I love about it,” Karen adds.
In each class, movements can be modified and adapted to address problem areas or injuries, and stretches are always integral to the workouts. There are several different class options from 45 minutes to an hour and with the variety it can be done every day. There is a new client special, and classes are also available online. barmethod.com/locations/orlando-winterpark/
Warrior ONE
A yoga, fitness and strength studio that recently relocated in Baldwin Park after a car crashed into the front of their Corrine Drive location, Warrior ONE, celebrating 11 years, is all about inclusivity and empowerment. Director Danielle Cosgrove embodies the business’s focus on an encouraging environment where anyone at any age or level can comfortably participate.
“We started in one little 800-squarefoot space on Corrine Drive, but we kept wanting to expand. We went into two storefronts and finally to four total store fronts there. Then we opened a space in Dunedin. But every time we expanded, we still needed more space. People were begging to come in. This space is all about yoga, but also a place for community — to
gather and make friends,” she explains. The larger room in the studio can fit 120 people for a class.
Warrior ONE is very organic with colorfully painted walls and vibrant murals — just about every inch is covered. “Every class that we do — some are more challenging and others more relaxing — we make sure that people feel like they can do it and whatever they can do is just perfect the way it is. If a teacher says to do something, they always give another option if someone can’t do that specific move. We want people to feel good wherever they are and just keep going and growing,” she says.
There are no levels in the classes and all ages are welcome, no matter limitations, strength or abilities. In addition to yoga, there are circuit training classes with spinning, rowing and weights. New student specials are also available.
“We want you to come and be welcomed, no matter your level. We will meet you where you are. Our instructors are here to guide you,” she adds. wearewarriorone.com/classesorlando

AN A DVENT H EALTH FOR WOMEN
SERIES
JENNIFER EVINS: Community Collaborator
Three years ago, Jennifer Evins arrived in town — not knowing anyone except those who had interviewed her — to take the helm of United Arts of Central Florida, the umbrella nonprofit that raises and distributes funds for arts, science and history organizations in our region. Not only did she step in post pandemic, but she was charged with leading a critical community entity that had been without a CEO for three years.
And she has just overseen a collaborative campaign that brought in more than $6.75 million from more than 3,600 donors during the threemonth effort. “Year round we raise between $13 and $14 million for the arts, but this campaign is about everyone raising money at the same time. The word collaboration is truly what makes it so special because all those groups are also raising money year-round. But coming together to do this really elevates the awareness of the arts. It’s hard, but it’s fun too,” Jennifer says.
To get to this point, she faced and conquered numerous challenges. “Because I came from a much smaller scale of a community, I spent the first 90 days just listening — meeting with people and learning about this region. Our organization was responsible for deploying all the federal resources to make sure the groups could stay alive. United Arts spent two years taking care of the whole art sector and no one was focused on United Arts. I had to spend the first year figuring out how to build back our own organization to meet the needs of a growing community,” she explains.
Once some of the immediate needs were met, she knew a strategic plan was
essential to growth and continued success. “We were running at 4 percent overhead which means we were starving ourselves. I spent time looking at what a new organizational structure and staffing would look like to meet the needs. We did not lose any arts nonprofits during that time — which was phenomenal. It speaks to the resiliency of the arts. Many of the organizations regrouped and did virtual and outdoor programming,” Jennifer adds.
Another part of the strategic plan was
A positive movement to come out of the pandemic was an increased interest in the arts.
People realized that they wanted to have more access to the arts — they had a heightened understanding of the benefits of the arts to their emotional wellbeing.
an assessment, so an arts ecology study was done by the DeVos Institute of Arts Management at the University of Maryland. “It looked at the entire ecosystem from individual artists to the organiza“
tions and what the state of the arts were coming out of the pandemic. That set a course for how we were going to respond and strengthen the sector, which was critical,” she shares.
A positive movement to come out of the pandemic was an increased interest in the arts. “People realized that they wanted to have more access to the arts — they had a heightened understanding of the benefits of the arts to their emotional wellbeing. There is research coming out of the World Health Organization and Johns Hopkins around the benefits of the arts that are finally scientifically proven. Doctors are even encouraging patients to engage in the arts to reduce diseases and address mental health. The University of Florida has the leading research around arts, health and medicine. We are coming to the realization that the arts have a much deeper impact on us providing joy and pleasure,” she explains.
Moving forward Jennifer is excited about two big initiatives. One is a partnership with the City of Orlando and DTO (Downtown Orlando) to bring in performing artists for lunch breaks, providing all types of workers access to the arts while providing income for the artists.
The second is a partnership with Visit Orlando to create a cultural tourism product to be known around the nation and the world. “We will be working to get the arts organizations ready — how to work with visitors, tour groups and conventions. It’s going to put Central Florida on the map and provide earned revenue for artists and arts organizations,” she adds.
During her tenure, United Arts of Central Florida has grown from supporting 32 organizations to more than 60. And diversity is a big part of that expansion with 89 cultural festivals now happening. “Our community reflects the globe and it’s one of the most diverse regions in the country. And leaders here want the arts to be part of solving some of our bigger issues and that’s a wonderful thing. The arts are part of the larger strategy for this community,” Jennifer shares.
ADVENTHEALTH FOR WOMEN:
Women’s Health Screenings for Your To-Do List
Most of our to-do lists are growing longer by the day, but taking care of yourself — and protecting your long-term health — should always be a priority.
1. Well-Woman Exam: A well-woman exam is a yearly checkup performed by either your primary care physician or your OB/GYN. If you’ve had a hysterectomy, it’s still recommended that you have a pelvic exam every three to five years.
2. Mammogram: A mammogram is a screening used to look for signs of breast cancer, like tumors. Mammograms are recommended annually starting at age 40.
3. Colorectal Screening: Typically, regular colorectal screenings should begin at age 45, but may be recommended sooner if you have risk factors such as a family history of colorectal cancer.
4. Blood Pressure: It’s recommended that you start checking your blood pressure regularly starting at age 18. Tracking your lipid panel is also important; this includes your total cholesterol, HDL, LDL and lipids.
If you need to schedule your screenings, our Women’s Health Navigators are here to help. This complimentary service can help you find a location or provider who fits your needs. Call 407-720-5191 or visit HerHealthNavigator.com.

Family Fun at Caribe Royale Orlando
by Kate Slentz
It was a weekend to remember at Caribe Royale Orlando, where the entire family enjoyed the upgraded accommodations and amenities at this AAA Four Diamond Resort located near Walt Disney World but feels worlds away with its tropical vibes and elevated service.
Caribe Royale recently emerged from an $140 million reimagination that included fully remodeled one-bedroom suites, expanded meeting spaces (240,000 total square feet), an inviting new lobby, the expansion of the AAA Four Diamond The Venetian Chop House restaurant, a new Rum Bar featuring Bacardi, the renovation and repositioning of The Market, the addition of a Starbucks, and a new dining option, Stadium Club — a next-level sports bar and entertainment venue featuring 360-degree game viewing and eight pro-level sports simulator suites.
Our family — Kate, Mike, Benji, Audrey, and Christi and Rob (Coco and Papa) — was invited to experience many of the upgrades at a weekend stay in celebration of Audrey’s 4th birthday. After a quick and easy check-in in the contemporary lobby, we made our way to our suite where
we were surprised with a Happy Birthday banner, balloons and special treats. The all-suite designs, with separate living area, are perfect for families with littles who have earlier bedtimes than their parents.
After unpacking, we headed down to Stadium Club for an immersive dinner experience surrounded by television screens showing a variety of sporting events and upbeat, family friendly “club” music. Stadium Club’s menu features chef-driven, elevated sports bar classics, and our favorites included the soft steamed pork belly bao buns, candied bacon, and the signature Stadium Club wings in the West Coast-Style, sweet heat and sesame with chili-garlic crunch. The birthday surprises continued as they presented Audrey with a birthday cake, baked in-house and available for purchase in The Market, which has graband-go options including salads, sand-
wiches, paninis and pizzas, freshly baked cakes and pastries, housemade confections, and Kelly’s Homemade Ice Cream.
The next day adults and children alike enjoyed the 75-foot water slide, waterfalls and pool, which is at the center of the resort, so it’s easy to access from any room.
We rested in our poolside cabana where attendants and servers made sure we had everything we needed such as towels, soft drinks and ice. Not wanting to stop the poolside fun, we opted to order lunch to our cabana from Calypso’s Pool Bar & Grille, blending Latin and Caribbean influences into savory dishes while also mixing up refreshing frozen cocktails and other adult beverages.
We found ourselves back at Stadium Club the second night to try the sports simulators, which provided plenty of entertainment, especially for the kids who
played baseball, golf, soccer, hockey, and even zombie dodgeball. The adults turned their attention to the TVs, which were broadcasting a live boxing match, while we sipped cocktails and craft beers from Stadium Club’s ample selection.
On our departure day, we enjoyed one more swim in the pool and breakfast at Tropicale — serving classic breakfast dishes as well as offering a full buffet. I highly recommend the Floridian Stuffed French
Toast, thick sliced challah bread stuffed with cream cheese, dusted with powdered sugar, seasonal berries, house-made fruit glaze, and choice of bacon or sausage.
Other highlights from our stay included convenient morning coffee from Starbucks — you can even order for pick-up through the Starbucks app. And be sure to check out the new sport court, featuring state-of-theart pickleball and padel tennis, or shoot some hoops on the basketball court. My kids also enjoyed the arcade, playground and kiddie splash pool, conveniently located near the main pool area in the middle of the resort.
There are a lot of resorts and hotels to choose from in Orlando but what we always look for in a stay is exceptional service and those special touches. Caribe Royale’s family-centric amenities and attentive staff make it a top choice for a return visit, hopefully soon. cariberoyale.com

FOOD HALL LOVERS REJOICE!
For several years, food halls have proven to be quite popular due to the variety of offerings within one setting. The latest to open, The Great Southern Box Food Hall & Bar, is part of the renaissance happening in the Packing District on Orange Blossom Trail. The renovation of the area is quite impressive and additions to the neighborhood are popping up regularly.
The 13,000-square-foot food hall, part of the Dr. Phillips Charities grand plan for the area that was home to the original citrus
warehouse, is focused on immigrant cuisine. Among the opening concepts are Braza Brazilian Steakhouse, Eighty Twenty, Kayos Jamaican Grill, Dancing Yeti Nepalese & Indian Kitchen, Kabab 2 Go, A Lo Cubano Kitchen, Rajdhani Express, and 28 Groves.
The hall is available for private events and there is a spacious outdoor area with a convenient parking garage. Plans for future programming include live music, trivia night, music bingo and Maker’s Markets. And a brewery is scheduled to open later this year. greatsouthernboxco.com

The Citrus Club Transforms into an Urban Oasis for Downtown Orlando
by Karen LeBlanc
The Citrus Club recently unveiled a new look that pays homage to its origins and 50-year legacy with a zest for natural light and materials. Located on the 18th floor of Citrus Center, the club has been a social mainstay in downtown Orlando since opening in 1971. Known for its cityscape views and influential clientele, the private Orlando social club initiated a multi-million-dollar interior overhaul, transforming its 26,000-square-foot space into an urban oasis.
The vision for our redesign was a contemporary nod to the city’s citrus heritage with natural materials and a welcoming, reinvigorated ambiance,” explains James Gelfand, Citrus Club Manager. San Diego-based interior design firm VIVE Collaborative created the reimagined decor.
“We wanted to create a bright and airy retreat embodying the vibrant spirit of coastal Florida,” explains Bethany Deac, Certified Interior Decorator at VIVE Collaborative.
Floor-to-ceiling windows drink in natural light, illuminating vibrant colors, botanical elements, wood tones, greenery and tropical textures. “The new design is focused around the idea of a living room and is intended to be a haven of comfort
and style, where you can unwind while soaking in the coastal feel,” Bethany says.
Soft furnishings in light, breezy fabrics complement the natural textures of rattan light fixtures and wicker design accents. “We wanted to evoke the feel of Florida outdoor living by creating playful and sophisticated spaces,” Bethany continues. The club’s private banquet and meeting rooms seamlessly extend this sophisticated refuge. “The prior club design had a corporate look and feel, existing in an era of flashier hospitality styling,” Bethany explains.
The refresh includes the debut of two innovative new culinary concepts: Tangerine, offering a formal dining experience, and The Grove, offering a casual dining experience. A more formal wine room seats 16 at a long dining table and showcases

glass wine lockers leased by members.
Executive Chef Chris McKenna joined the Citrus Club in July 2023, eager to foster its new vibe. “I was drawn to the club’s creative pursuits of new food concepts,” says Chris, who has worked with Invited Clubs, the parent company of Citrus Club, for 14 years in other cities.
Chef McKenna works with an 18-member cooking staff in an all-electric kitchen, creating dishes from locally grown and regionally sourced ingredients. The chef unleashes his culinary creativity in special events, including Dinner in the Dark, Vintner’s dinners, and monthly Chef’s Table dinners.
“The goal is to drive membership value with quality food and programming that fosters connections,” James says.

SUMMER SOIRÉES: HOT PARTIES COOLVIBES
&
by Jorge Rodriguez and Christi Ashby
The hottest theme of the season takes cues from the late ‘60s scene in chic Palm Beach recently illustrated by the campy Apple TV hit Palm Royale. Designer Audrey Morrone and marketing pro Kate Frost Wilson decided to turn up the heat with their version, featuring a cool pool with a live swan and mermaid, beautiful champagne bar with an attentive bartender, posh furnishings with lush florals, pop-up shops for entertainment, selfie-worthy vintage vignettes, appropriate props including an astronaut, topiary dog and Lilly Pulitzer Moke, and a dazzling display of nibbles and sweets.
The initial idea was formed when Kate invited PJ GarciaMarshall, who sources vintage items, to her house for some shopping. She thought it was so much fun looking through the treasures that she should host a brunch with girlfriends that included some shopping.
“That led to a conversation with another friend who said we should have clothes there. Then I talked to Audrey and said it should be at her house, because by that time Palm Royale had come out, and hers was perfect. Once Audrey gets involved, it’s just next level. I also knew that the Lily Pulitzer Moke was coming out, so I thought we
could tie that in. Audrey just kept adding and adding and making it more and more incredible,” Kate says.
“I watched the show and loved it. And then I rewatched it. I wanted to add elements like the painting of Norma represented by the pictures of Kate and me with the crowns. I wanted it to be overthe-top fun for everyone who was coming. And make it a great kick off to summer,” Audrey adds.
The ladies had their vision and the party came together fairly quickly. One thing seemed to lead to another with more suggestions. They started reaching out to the right people to get the props, like the astro-
naut. Another person recommended incorporating The Colony Palm Beach green throughout. And Audrey wallpapered a bar she already had.
“We had a backdrop done by Heidi Lifrage, who we had just worked with on Winter Park Fashion Week. And we added Lola, the swan. And then Audrey knew about a mermaid, so she was added as well. The beauty of us doing something together is no one puts the brakes on anything, much to our husbands’ chagrin. We just kept saying yes to everything. It was just more and more,” Kate explains.

“Most of the furnishings were things that I had, but I added the extra pink pillows. The rattan bench in the photo area I found on Facebook Marketplace, and I ordered the fabric and fringe and had our upholsterer make the cushion. I wanted guests to be able to sit down with the seahorse side table and the pink phone Kate brought. It just all came together,” Audrey says. She also brought a few things from her showroom, Bespoke Furniture.
The ladies feel a good concept or a theme makes the party. “I think it helps people know what to wear and what to expect. It also makes for great pictures and gets everyone involved. A Halloween party doesn’t have to be the only time you dress up. Guests get excited too, because they are thinking about what to wear. And they stay longer and meet new people,” Kate shares. “They are thinking about it a little bit longer. It’s not just about being at the event — it’s the preparation as well,” Audrey adds.
Because there were so many elements, they purposely kept some things simple. “There wasn’t a full bar because that would have been difficult with one bartender. The same with the food. Women just want to pick and nosh so having a variety of items and some sweet treats worked well. It’s
important to have a lot of different seating areas and photo opportunities, as well as some kind of activity. So instead of a DJ, we had the shopping opportunities. We also like to support other women’s businesses and bring people together who may not know each other,” Kate explains.

As a professional event planner, I understand the importance of creating memorable and enjoyable summer events. Here are eight tips to help you plan and execute successful summer entertaining:
1 Choose the Right Venue: Select a venue that complements the summer theme and can accommodate your guest count. Outdoor venues like gardens, rooftops or beaches are perfect for summer events, but make sure to have a backup plan in case of bad weather.
2 Embrace the Outdoors (But make arrangements for a Plan B!): Take advantage of outdoor spaces, weather permitting, by incorporating outdoor elements into your event. Set up seating areas, lounge areas, or even a picnic-style dining experience to create a relaxed and casual atmosphere. And, always, ALWAYS have a Plan B!
3 Refreshing Beverages: Offer a variety of refreshing and seasonal beverages to keep your guests cool and hydrated. Create a signature summer cocktail or provide a self-serve drink station with iced teas, lemonades and infused water options.
4 Light and Fresh Menu: Opt for light and fresh menu options that are suitable for warm weather. Include a variety of salads, grilled meats and vegetables, and refreshing fruit platters. Consider dietary restrictions and provide vegetarian or vegan options as well.
5 Creative Decor: Use vibrant and colorful decor to enhance the summer ambiance. Incorporate elements like colorful linens, tropical flowers, and beach-inspired centerpieces. Don’t forget to also provide shade and sunscreen options for your guests’ comfort.
6 Entertainment: Plan activities and entertainment that are suitable for outdoor settings. Consider hiring a live band, setting up lawn games, or organizing a DIY craft station. Provide options for both children and adults to ensure everyone has a great time.
7 Lighting and Ambiance: As the sun sets, create a magical atmosphere with creative lighting. Hang market lights, place lanterns or candles on tables, or use LED furniture to add a touch of elegance and warmth to the event.
8 Comfortable Seating: Ensure your guests are comfortable throughout the event by providing ample seating options. Incorporate cozy outdoor furniture, cushions and blankets to create a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.
Planning ahead, paying attention to details, and having contingency plans in case of any unforeseen circumstances will ensure that you will be well on your way to hosting a memorable and enjoyable summer event.

hutchinson island
A lengthy stretch of shoreline, almost 24 miles long, off the coast of Martin and St. Lucie Counties, Hutchinson Island is a water lover’s retreat with the Atlantic on one side and the Indian River on the other. With miles of sandy beaches away from the crowds, it is desirable for boaters and water sport enthusiasts to nature observers and of course, self-proclaimed beach bums.
For the second stop on our road trip, we were delighted to pull up to Hutchinson Shores Resort & Spa, an Opal Collection Resort. With 178 rooms, including suites, this Jensen Beach property is the epitome of casual luxury. The lobby’s sculptural installation of dancing blue marlins against the sand-hued furnishings and living wall speak to the locale in a nuanced style.
We arrived in the early afternoon and were able to check into our room. A little hungry, we headed for the Dune Beach Bar where we nibbled on Crispy Shrimp Tacos, with avocado salsa, chili lime slaw, sriracha aioli in warm flour tortillas, while sipping a refreshing glass of Sauvignon Blanc and listening to the lulling surf sounds.
After changing, we discovered there were two pools — a smaller one directly on the ocean and the other larger one surrounded by tropical landscaping. We experienced both. The guests ranged from couples of all ages to families, and even a group reunion celebrating a member’s 104th birthday.
Like other Opal resorts, the restaurant Drift Kitchen + Bar feels familiar, yet this one has a lighter, brighter décor befitting the seaside setting. The bar was lively that evening, but we opted for an outdoor table. For a starter we settled on the Skillet Focaccia (rosemary, roasted garlic, smoked sea salt, wild blueberry butter and parmesan fonduta) and it was an impressive serving. For mains, I chose the Crispy Skin Salmon with blood orange beurre blanc, smoked crusted Pork belly, roasted Brussels sprouts and a parmesan polenta cake. My sister decided on the Blue Crab Grouper with haricot verts, citrus beurre blanc, basil oil and roasted Yukon potatoes. Both were outstanding.
We stayed long past our last bite, entertained by the large party next to us celebrating and including us in several of the conversations about who was related and where everyone lived. I am sure a few family secrets might have been revealed.
Morning brought another photo-worthy scene, and an early walk was followed by breakfast under the morning sun. It was decadently delicious Crab Cake Benedict for me and a Create Your Own omelet for Wendy. After a last cruise through the resort, we hit the road, promising to revisit.
After quickly settling the bill, we got our keys at the ground floor front desk and received some helpful advice — the fun is on one. That’s where the restaurants and other amenities are located. We headed to our upgraded suite (I had only booked a regular room) that overlooked the pool and beyond to the beach, finding the balcony provided the perfect setting for people watching in the shade.
My very favorite amenity, complimentary morning coffee available at 6am, brought a big smile to my face. Dining was divine from an evening meal at Heaton’s outdoor patio with seafood-focused menu of coastal fare to breakfast at the all-day-dining spot, Cobalt’s, where we leisurely devoured custom omelets.

Their story: Ryan and Chloe met at flight school in Addison, Texas. “At the time, Ryan and I were both seeing other people and kept a professional relationship as he was still a student, and I was an instructor. We both, however, remember fondly a couple of flights in which I was his instructor and we totally hit it off,” Chloe says. After the two were single and Ryan became an instructor as well, they took their friendship to the next level.
The proposal: After two years of dating, Chloe was living and flying for an airline based out of Denver. Ryan was also flying for the same airline and had just moved to Denver. “He had suggested a hike to Saint Mary’s glacier in Idaho Springs, CO, and although I had a good idea of what he would ask me at the top of the hike, I had no idea about the party he had planned for when we got home, with friends and family who had flown in for the occasion. That whole day is one of my favorite memories,” she explains.
Ceremony and reception: The ceremony took place at Bella Cosa in Lake Wales, FL. “We loved that it had 11 apartments on the second level so we could have some of our guests stay with us all weekend. Although it turned out to be a rainy, windy, unseasonably cool day, our vendors helped us achieve our vision of an intimate backyard setting filled with Italian coastline vibes — blues and yellows, oranges and reds. We even got to incorporate our love of flying into the weekend with rides on my dad’s seaplane right from the venue’s backyard. Another favorite detail of mine was wearing my mom’s wedding dress, shortened, for my reception,” Chloe shares.
Personal thoughts: When I woke up on the big day, I felt anxious due to the weather. I had envisioned a warm, sunny, beautiful day and all the events taking place outside. We ended up getting the ceremony done outside just in the nick of time. And although we eventually had to give up on our outdoor checkered dance floor, the party, once moved inside, was so much fun; I wouldn’t change a single thing. Looking back, the weather not being perfect highlighted for me the fact that nothing mattered more than marrying Ryan and getting to share that with our closest people. Where they are now: Today, the newlyweds are loving married life and their jobs. Chloe flies the Boeing 737 at American Airlines, and Ryan flies the same plane at Southwest Airlines. “We live in Grapevine, TX, which is a nice central location for both of our jobs, and we enjoy being with friends and family who also live in the Dallas-Fort Worth area,” Chloes says.

Their story: “After both going to Winter Park High School and Florida State University and having the most mutual friends two ‘strangers’ could have, we finally connected on a friend’s boat on Lake Maitland in the summer of 2020. One boat ride getting to know each other, and the rest is history! We returned to that same boat three years later to take our engagement photos,” Olivia shares.
The proposal: Bryce proposed while they were celebrating his birthday at The Boca Raton hotel. “He had asked my parents months in advance but didn’t tell anyone (except his mom) he was going to do it that weekend. It was so special to have that moment to ourselves, and at the same time, so much fun getting to Facetime our family and friends,” Olivia says.
Ceremony and reception: The ceremony and reception were held at Harriett’s Orlando Ballet Centre. “We wanted a springy but modern wedding that fit the vibe of the ballet studios’ tall glass windows overlooking the lake. Thanks to my amazing planner, we were married surrounded by candles, white and blush flowers, and beautiful greenery,” she adds.
Personal thoughts: We were blissfully happy and excited to celebrate our love with more than 300 of our family and friends! We were married by Bryce’s uncle who incorporated both of our Jewish and Christian traditions into the ceremony. And then we went on to have the time of our lives at the reception, thanks to iRock and my parents who surprised us with a performance by Tenor David Soto Zanbrana with Opera Orlando.
Where they are now: Bryce is a Senior Project Manager in commercial construction for Brasfield & Gorrie in Winter Park and Olivia is a practicing attorney at Nelson Mullins in downtown Orlando. They are now living in Maitland, after buying their home during wedding planning.
The Wedding of
Abigail Goetz and Justin Merkel
Their story: “We met in early 2017 at Justin’s fraternity party while attending the University of North Florida. We had known of each other for quite some time, but it wasn’t until one of our friends introduced us that we finally had the nerve to talk to one another. While it took us a few months to make things official, we spoke daily and cannot deny the spark we felt on day one,” Abigail shares.
The proposal: Abigail was “randomly” selected for a photoshoot on Instagram, which Justin had planned along with a big engagement party with friends and family following. “With Justin in PT school, my brother and his wife about to give birth any day, and family members ‘being out of town,’ I wasn’t expecting it at all!” she admits.
Ceremony and reception: The couple tied the knot at historic Highland Manor in Apopka. “The day was perfect, thanks to my amazing vendors, the venue, our incredible (and fun) family and friends, as well as the weather! The vibe of the entire day was “Old Hollywood” with odes to Frank Sinatra — our signature drinks were an Espresso Martini (Fly Me to the Moon) and an Old Fashioned (My Way), and our first dance was ‘Strangers in the Night,’” Abigail says.
Personal thoughts: I was calmer than I expected. It helped that, from the weather to the band, everything was perfect… and most importantly, I got to marry my best friend!
Where they are now: The newlyweds live in Jacksonville where Abigail works in marketing at an engineering firm, Thims & Miller, and Justin is a Physical Therapist at Southeast Orthopedics.

Their story: The sorority sister and the fraternity brother found love during sophomore year of college. “Although we shared a backyard and many casual encounters, it wasn’t until mutual friends officially introduced us that we really became a part of each other’s lives. From date parties to late night conversations, we embraced the next three years of college side by side,” Lauren explains. After graduating Indiana University, they lived in Chicago for a year, before moving to Austin together for Matt’s work.
The proposal: Heading to Mexico for Labor Day weekend, Lauren had an inkling that Matt might be popping the question on vacation. So, it was really a surprise when a few days before the trip, he proposed at their local botanical gardens with a hidden photographer capturing the moment.
Ceremony and reception: Both the ceremony and reception were at The Alfond Inn. Lauren grew up in Winter Park so this was a dream venue for her and thankfully Matt was on board. “With a black and white theme, we stuck to a very modern yet classic feel with the decor,” Lauren explains. With orchids being her favorite flower, the bouquet, Chuppah and ballroom had plenty of them accompanied by white roses and hydrangeas.
Personal thoughts: The unexpected rain altered our ceremony plans a bit but despite the dreary weather, we both felt surprisingly calm and relaxed. Having lived in multiple states, we have friends and family that were traveling from all over, so we were looking forward to having everyone in the same room celebrating with us. The day went quickly, but we felt like we stayed present and were able to enjoy every moment.
Where they are now: They are currently living in Knoxville, Tennessee, for Matt’s job as a financial wholesaler. Lauren works for a construction and engineering firm based out of Winter Park. “We love to travel but hope to settle down somewhere and start our family soon,” she adds.

Their story: “We met on our first day of work at our first jobs out of college. There were 90 people in our consulting ‘start class’ but Emmet was the life of the room and hard to miss. He asked me out on a date, but I turned him down, hesitant to date a coworker. After seeing his thoughtful persistence, I decided to give him a chance. We began dating, fell in love, and never looked back,” Nina explains.
Ceremony and reception: The couple celebrated their marriage with three Pakistani-American wedding events. Their outdoor ceremony was an intimate event held at Nina’s childhood home, with only immediate families and wedding party present. That same evening, Nina’s parents hosted a colorful celebration at their home. The decor was vibrant, and the night was filled with Henna art and traditional dancing. “Our reception at Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress the following evening was our biggest affair. The ballroom was beautiful and elegant, with cascading white flowers. A string quartet performed our first dance, dinner was a delicious mix of Pakistani and American food, and our friends and family danced until the end of the night,” Nina shares.
Personal thoughts: Emmet: I was excited, overwhelmed, and so unbelievably happy. Nina looked absolutely stunning, so I struggled to take my eyes off her. Everything came together so perfectly that I found myself grinning from ear to ear nearly the entire day. It was just a blast getting to celebrate and dance with all our friends and family. Nina: I was unbelievably grateful and in awe the entire wedding week. Everything came together just as I hoped it would, and I married the love of my life surrounded by all my favorite people. There was truly no greater gift.
Where they are now: “We live in the beautiful Chelsea neighborhood in New York City. With all the excitement (and craziness) of the wedding behind us, we’re enjoying being present in the city we love. We both work at busy technology startups, but on the weekends, we always find time to explore new restaurants, coffee shops and bookstores. We’re building a little library in our home together!” Nina says.
