The beauty of spring captured by Louis Comfort Tiffany in a brilliant design is just one of the many treasures found at The Morse Museum, which is celebrating its 75th anniversary. Contained inside the North Park Avenue building is the largest collection of works by Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848–1933) in the world. At the 1900 Exposition Universelle in Paris, he debuted a magnificent window depicting the four seasons. The Spring panel, its cluster of colorful tulips heralding the earth’s renewal, is just one part of his extraordinary representation of nature’s cycle. Tiffany later divided his Four Seasons window for installation at his Long Island estate, Laurelton Hall. The four main panels went into the living room while the border panels were placed in the garden entrance of the reception hall. Entirely composed of colored, plated and textured glass, with no painted embellishments at all, the leaded-glass panels represent the highest achievement in Tiffany glassmaking. As a work of art, the panels symbolize the epic structure of life, birth, aging, death and rebirth. Surviving today with all its brilliant elements, these panels remain central works in understanding the artist’s genius innovation and place in American design. Jed Johnson had started out doing design work for the art clients of his personal friend Andy Warhol. I had wanted to be an interior designer since I was 15. My mother was a designer

A little winter break led me to the sunny desert hot spot of Palm Springs for a week of marveling at timeless designs. Modernism Week began in Palm Springs in 2006 to celebrate mid-century modern design, architecture, art, fashion and culture. Its mission is to recognize and foster appreciation of mid-century architecture and design, as well as contemporary thinking in these fields, by encouraging education, preservation and sustainable modern living represented in the greater Palm Springs area.

The highlight of this year’s event was the Modernism Week 2017 Show House, Villa Golightly, a collaboration between Christopher Kennedy, a renowned California interior designer, and homeowner Kelly Golightly (Kelly Lee), blogger, Instagram influencer and unofficial ambassador of Palm Springs. Her 6,500-square-foot desert estate located in Andreas Hills, south of downtown, was completely transformed by Christopher Kennedy and his team of nearly 20 of the nation’s top interior designers — or tastemakers as they are called. Each created their own unique room in the villa representing their personal tastes and aesthetics while keeping

his was a brand new home for my clients and we were commissioned to not only maximize space, but also create a space that is functional. The inspiring styles were minimalistic and transitional,” she says. The couple’s previous home was more

“The biggest challenge on this Brownstone was the common area on the second floor because it was only 15 feet wide and is the heart of the house with the family room, dining room and kitchen,” she adds. To make it feel more open, Francia used a monotone color palette in the living room and dining room, creating a calm and tranquil space that

DESIGNdilemma flows nicely into the kitchen. “To achieve a perfect balance and harmony throughout the space, we added touches of color with the throw pillows and accessories,” she explains. And the custom shelving unit on the wall was made to be like a piece of art, showcasing the client’s prized possessions. Banquette seating was added in a nook off the narrow living room and dining room to give the clients another area to relax as well as offer additional storage underneath the cushions and behind the shelves. In the kitchen, Francia really focused on the materials, such as the Uttermost satin nickel finish pendant lights, featuring a mix of curved and straight lines, over the island. The tile backsplash was chosen to go with the granite counters, cabinets and wood flooring, complementing the colors in each. All in all the narrow width of the home was visually expanded with the smart use of interesting materials, reflective finishes, simple color palette, convenient storage and just-the-right-size furnishings.

Casa Tua in Miami has a charming logo. This hotel/club is a magical place situated in an old Spanish-style home concealed by a large ficus wall located a few blocks off of South Beach. The mood is very chic as it is full of insanely gorgeous people, yet it is casual and comfortable in the most elegant way. Michele Bonan designed the interiors to feel like a personal home including photographs of the beautiful owners and their family, books, open shelving, and comfortable furniture. Dinner plates, serving pieces and matchboxes feature the name Casa Tua in a charming font. There is an enchanting illustration of the house as well, which perfectly captures the spirit of this fashionable abode. A favorite house on my daily driving route is a perfect candidate for a whimsical house logo. The house is elegant, nicely proportioned to its lot, and is positioned just so to overlook the waters of Lake Virginia in Winter Park. A house logo would make a quintessential hostess gift should I ever be invited over for a party.

LOCAL RENOVATION SHOW SET TO DEBUT

If you love home improvement and design television shows, but get frustrated with repeated projects that include basements, shiplap, furnaces and other home features that are definitely not relatable to Central Florida, there is good news.
Ready, Set, Renovate!, a new 30-minute, HGTV-style home renovation show will not only feature a local host, it is also produced locally and will feature projects from all over Central Florida. Scheduled to debut on April 8 at noon, the show’s host and creator is former WKMG (Channel 6) meteorologist Elizabeth Hart. She left the station last March to develop Ready, Set, Renovate! full time with videographer Michael Loff. She became interested in home renovation during the housing market crisis when she purchased some investment properties. After making improvements to the properties, she rented them out. That’s when she fell in love with seeing how homes can fulfill their potential through renovation and become special places again for new homeowners. Elizabeth credits the courage to take on the enormity of a television show (the first season has 13 episodes and the filming schedule depends on the work completion) to her family roots of strong, determined women. “I always had an example in front of me of women who weren’t afraid to work hard and do something. It never really occurred to me not to do it,” she says. Her main reason for leaving the fulltime weather desk was to be able to spend 38

house AND home more time with her son. “I was in the hospital having my son when my husband passed away. It was emotionally traumatic and hard because I did not have family here. I was working at the station trying to juggle everything and was having a difficult time managing my parenting responsibilities. That started the wheel turning — I knew I needed to come up with something better,” she explains. So she started working weekends and supplementing her income with the renovated rental properties. “Every time I renovated a house I realized I loved picking out the tile, the cabinets. It was so fun. I ended up re-doing my own home in Windermere,” she says. That got her thinking that there should be a market for a program about Central Florida projects. The resurgence of mid-century home design has kept her legacy alive and new generations of fans gravitate to the sculptural lines and functionality of the pieces. Early in her career she took on a variety of projects with the Planning Unit, a division of Knoll that she founded in 1946. In the process, she designed a great deal of furniture that, while intended simply as “fill-ins� for commercial projects, have since become standalone icons of modern furniture design that suit workplaces and residences alike. With her natural eye for design and her famous refusal to compromise on perfection, Florence Knoll devised solutions to office problems that had never been recognized or addressed before. By 1950, more than a third of the 63 products offered in the Knoll Associates price list had been designed by Florence Knoll.

Her Lounge Collection, first introduced in 1954, poised on sleek metal frames (the lounge chair, settee and sofa), bears clear geometric profiles that celebrate the Bauhaus tenets of rational design, principles that Florence Knoll undoubtedly imbued from her mentor, Mies van der Rohe, during her studies at the Illinois Institute of Technology. The new Florence Knoll Relaxed Lounge Seating collection introduces softer, deeper cousins to the classics, and their generous cushioning meets the requirements of comfort and calm in the modern home. Further additions to the Florence Knoll line include a series of dining tables and the Mini Desk that will be available in a range of marbles. The Mini Desk will additionally be offered in glass. Although less widely recognized than her classic lounge collection, Florence Knoll’s early design for a wire-base stool has become an equally legendary example of sleek, Bauhaus-inspired American furniture since its introduction in 1948. In celebration of her 100th year, the design will be revived from the Knoll archive and reintroduced as the Florence Knoll Hairpin Stacking Table. First prototyped in the early 1940s, the Model 75 stacking stool became an instantly popular addition to what was then still a small catalog of furnishings

iNDUSTRY iCON from Knoll Associates. It remained in production until 1966. The Florence Knoll Hairpin Stacking Table will be made of a painted steel and laminate and can stack up to five tables. A flexible piece — it can go by the bed, in the library, next to the pool or in the nursery.

SAVORING THE SEASON:
The Appeal of Impromptu Gatherings As our days begin to afford us with an extra hour or two of sunshine, I am always surprised when friends and neighbors suddenly reappear when the sun shines a bit later. Beginning in early spring as I arrive home from work, I experience barbecue aromas that permeate neighborhoods; I witness poolside wine-sipping, neighbors chatting in their driveways, and very often, the last-minute invite to “come join us for dinner; we are grilling out.”
S
o in preparation for this upcoming beautiful season, I have decided to make an effort to prepare a few premade sauces that store very
well in the refrigerator, keep on hand some frozen jumbo shrimp, and on my kitchen counter the versatile avocado for what is the main ingredient in my favorite new snack — avocado toast. Now when those friends or neighbors come knocking, I will be a bit more prepared to assist in these summer pop-up dinners. Of course, impromptu potluck social gatherings are usually preceded by a bit

EnTERTAINING of wine drinking, so I will be stocking up on some lighter style varietals. Spring and summer say rosé, and I agree, however, there are some delicious white wines that play just as well with warmer weather. Gruner Veltliner, Pinot Gris and Semillon all offer amazing crispness with the perfect amount of acidity and lower alcohol that actually enhance the flavors of summer. I must admit that steamed shrimp is one of my favorite foods. They are also a quick and easy go-to appetizer. Remember, however, don’t purchase shrimp that are already cooked, as they are watery and have little flavor. Pick up a few pounds of fresh jumbo shrimp from the seafood case at your favorite market. Take them home, rinse them off and freeze in packs of 12 in containers. When the time arises to prepare, remove from the freezer and allow a steady stream of cold water to flow on them for about 15 minutes. Then gently poach in a combination of boiling water, white wine, bay leaves and Old Bay seasoning. Depending on the size, allow for a cooking time of no more than 3-5 minutes. Strain, allow to cool briefly, and serve immediately with the following alternative sauce to the traditional cocktail variety. Now enjoy your alfresco evenings or Sunday fun days even more after you’ve done a little seasonal prep!

Steak Sauce and Marinade I always have this delicious recipe on hand as the perfect marinade for chops and skirt steak or as a zesty topping on a grilled hamburger. YIELD: 2 CUPS 3 tablespoons blended oil
3 tablespoons apple juice
1 shallot, minced
1/4 cup balsamic syrup
2 teaspoons chopped garlic
1/2 cup Worcestershire sauce
3 tablespoons golden raisins, chopped
3 tablespoons ketchup
3 tablespoons dried prunes, chopped
1 tablespoon dry mustard
2 teaspoons sriracha
3 tablespoons soy sauce
1 teaspoon smoked paprika
2 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon celery salt In a medium saucepan, heat blended oil on medium temperature. Add shallot, garlic, raisins and prunes and sautĂŠ for 3 minutes. Add all remaining ingredients and simmer for 20 minutes, stirring often. Remove from heat and carefully blend in a mixer or food processor until smooth. Place in refrigerator uncovered until completely cool and then cover and store in refrigerator for up to one month.

SITTING AREA This sitting area is adjacent to the oversized gourmet kitchen and family room that were created during a complete interior remodel of a magical mid-century estate home. This unique property is almost completely surrounded by water, creating a private resort-like environment for its owners. The polished marble floor serves to reflect light that pours in from the two-story windows. We kept the wood ceiling as a nod to the home’s original organic architecture. hil Kean’s present-day interpretation of modernism is a Florida version, defined by a 40-foot span of glass that fronts the home, rectilinear planes and flat roof lines that create contemporary curb appeal. Located in a private, gated community known for its famous-name athletes and pro golfers, Phil
built Palm Court as a show home on tour during the 2017 NAHB International Builders’ Show (IBS) held in Orlando in January. The New American Home features the latest lifestyle trends and technologies, offering a first look at new building products before they hit the market. Phil Kean Design Group worked with participating vendors to custom create products that will become a part of vendors’ product lines, available to the consumer in the near future. Before the IBS, I met up with Phil Kean to tour his latest Lake Nona estate and experience its unique floor plan—a rectangular grouping of living zones around an interior putting green/courtyard with palm trees. “The home is great for living large or small because you can close or open sections,”’ explains Phil, principal of Phil Kean Design Group, AIA, ASID, AIBD. Immediately as we enter the home, we are outside again as the sliding glass walls by WinDoor open to reveal the entrance corridor furnished as a casual seating area that leads to the main living JEFF DAVIS
spaces—a music room, great room, dining room, wine bar and kitchen, all opening up to waterfront views and a vanishing-edge

pool. “We’ve designed the house to be podlike with a main house connected to three pods by enclosed courtyards and walkways,” he adds. One pod is a self-contained guest suite with a bedroom, bathroom, living room and laundry. The second pod is an exercise and spa space with a steam room and massage table. The third pod is a game room with a pool table and bar. Our tour begins at the entry corridor leading to custom-designed glass and wood double doors from Simpson Door Company that open to the music room, known as the grand salon, with a Bösendorfer piano and floor-to-ceiling, doublesided fireplace adorned with geometric concrete tiles from Walker Zanger’s Kaza Collection. “This beautiful fire feature offers a line of sight through to the entire sequence of the house,” notes Phil, referring to the custom-made, see-through, glass firebox with views to the great room and dining room. Throughout the home, 15 retractable screens by Phantom Screens open up the home to the outdoors from all angles, including a motorized wall screen spanning more than 40 feet in the great room and dining room. “We have the largest Phantom Screens ever made and one of the largest sliding walls of glass,” Phil says. “The décor is a nod to mid-century styling; you can imagine one of those fantastic Palm Springs resorts where Frank Sinatra was in the other room,” explains Phil, who had just returned from a trip to the desert resort city when he began designing the home. The Phil Kean design team locally sourced much of the home’s décor and art elements, working with Flying Horse Editions, a collaborative research studio for visual artists at the

University of Central Florida. “The colors are a bit more glamorous with a touch of glitter and bling. The house is designed around parties, art and relaxation,” he says. A wine bar with glass-walled wine storage fronts the great room and announces the kitchen. High-gloss lacquer cabinets seamlessly disguise appliances, cabinetry and the pantry. The Sub-Zero refrigerator and freezer with lacquer fronts blend with matching cabinets. The kitchen’s sheen is counterbalanced with a distressed walnut, live-edge breakfast bar that extends from a kitchen island with smoked-glass-front cabinets. Phil commissioned Alabama artist Robin Wade to create the live-edge feature with seating for four. Black-glass-front ovens and a range by Wolf with touch-to-operate surfaces and clever design details, such as hidden electrical outlets that pop up from the countertops, complete the look. JEFF DAVIS

sky terrace and a bar named “The 19th Hole.” The single-story flat roof serves as a platform for the sky terrace, accessible also by an outside staircase and an elevator. On the rooftop, an outdoor kitchen and multiple seating areas drink in bird’s-eye views of the community’s 18-hole championship golf course, designed by Tom Fazio. The master suite forms the right wing of the home opening to the pool, an adjacent sitting area and a fitness room. “The master suite should feel like a boutique hotel or resort hotel and I think the décor captures that feel with the velvet upholstered headboard that spans the wall and this fantastic view of the pool and waterfront,” Phil says. A white, stacked-stone, corner fireplace and gray and white color palette create a soft, serene retreat. Completing the spa-like experience is a European-styled wet room that places the shower and a freestanding tub in the same shared space, designed to deliver a rain shower experience with body washes and sprays. The master bath opens to a roomlength Brazilian wood bench and disperses natural light through a frosted glass wall. From the master suite, we cross through to the golf simulator room designed for training, practice, and après golf at the bar, one of six bars in the home. On the back wall, a large digital

screen recreates golf courses from around the world connected to a putting green. “It’s all high-definition, cutting-edge technology for the golfer and if you are going to buy in Lake Nona, this is a staple,” Phil says. Back at the front of the house, we arrive at the guest suite pod, a home within a home, and the glass hallway, a visible part of the exterior, that leads to a series of three additional guest rooms, completing the rectangular footprint. “One of the cool things about pod architecture is that you can use the space based on your needs. If you want a house to party, this is the place,” Phil says.

pull out from the coffee table so the family can sit around it to play games. And although all the fabrics in the room are light, Jenna says they are super durable. The room, again, mixes different woods and natural tones, such as the modern Bernhardt wingback chairs. Down the hall from the family room is the media/game/bar room, which was an awkwardly shaped room that Jenna and the team transformed into a comfortable, casual hangout place with different conversation areas. “One thing that I think is really genius that Jenna did is the console with the chairs behind there, so if someone wants to have a snack while watching television they don’t have to sit on the sectional,” Christina says. Back on the other side of the house, to the right of the formal living room, is a large rotunda that leads to other parts of the home. “They had this big rotunda with eight walls and I thought it would be cool to make a gallery, sort of a collective feel, where we used maps she had originally, we added ones, and she picked up some more on her travels during the process,” Jenna says. The master bedroom is just off the rotunda where the emphasis was on addressing the large windows that looked out to the lake and creating a serene sitting area that the homeowner would actually use. “The sheers really melded all that together and you can’t really tell where the windows start,” Christina adds. For privacy, blackout roller shades come down from a track that the designers built into the crown molding to keep the room looking clean. “The only true color in this room is the matching pieces of art on either side of the bed and the pillow that goes across the bed,” Christina says. Several changes were made to the master bathroom, including eliminating the built-in tub. “It actually had a faucet that spilled down from the ceiling so there was tile all around it because it was a wet area,” Jenna explains. “We changed the tub and made it more of a focal point when you enter the bathroom from the bedroom.” And 12” x 24” Travertine tiles were carried up the back wall. The home truly blends what the homeowners were looking for – a light, modern and organic space that was also casual, comfortable and conversational. “This is one of our favorite projects that we’ve ever done,” Christina says. “They had an interesting vision, they have great style, and they wanted something different.”

It’s the ultimate dream home in the land where dreams come true. And with a name like BippidiBobbidi-Boo, you know it is pure magic. Perfectly situated inside the gates of Golden Oak at Walt Disney World Resort, this fairytale castle is one of the new Four Seasons Private Residences Orlando. With serene views and access to the amenities of nearby Four Seasons Resort Orlando, it’s a fantastical all-year-round vacation retreat. THE 7,655-SQUARE-FOOT (FIVE BEDROOMS, SIX BATHS, TWO HALF-BATHS) RESIDENCE with guest cabana was built by Rial Jones, Jones-Clayton Construction, as a showcase for the newly developed section. It has already been sold to a family who was staying at the Four Seasons Orlando and fell under the spell of its enchantment. The interior designers, Jessica Lee and Molly Walker, Marc-Michaels Interior Design, were given a free reign as long as the carefree, yet luxurious, spirit was evident. “Rial came to us because we have worked together a lot in the past. He had a specific direction he wanted to go with — very resort-like. Based on the exterior architecture of the house we wanted it to have a classic feel throughout with some contemporary moments here and there. We presented everything, of course, but he kind of let us go with it. There were very few adjustments from our initial design.” Jessica says.

is also a guidebook for other details, including the roof and building materials. On the interior, we are free to go with any particular style we want. In most interior design presentations, we go with about 50 percent of what is presented and tweak the rest, but in this case, we liked just about everything in the original presentation,” Rial says. They all agreed that one of the integral elements was the inclusion of Disney motifs — especially iconic Mickey Mouse. “On a high-end residential project, you want it to be elegant and tasteful so there is a fine line as to where you can incorporate touches of Disney. But we know from our previous clients in Golden Oak that

those touches are very popular. But we wanted them to be subtle,” he adds. And the designers seemed to have a lot of fun with this aspect of the design. “The most obvious is the configuration of the pegs (wine bottles) on the dining room wall, but there is also the ceiling detail in the master bedroom, the spouts (which are all different) in the pool fountain, etched

The designers describe the home as informal, yet refined. There is simple elegance in the color palette – a soft blue-gray on the walls and neutral furnishings and details. Color comes through in the artwork and accessories. Keeping the interiors quiet allows the outdoor view, a spectacular vista of the natural Central Florida landscape, to shine. “With the overall palette, you don’t really notice a lot of color,” Jessica says. Molly adds another reason for the scheme, “The soft palette is very appealing to a lot of buyers right now.” It took less than a year to complete the home even though the detailing is exten-

There is a special access key for that part of the home. That’s a really nice feature. It’s like living at a hotel, but you have your own house,” he adds. Someone staying at the hotel saw the houses, wandered across the street and thought it would be a great place to extend their vacation. They said one of their favorite things was the name,” he says.

Imagine starting fresh — from floor to ceiling — to create a vision that conjures up sophistication in a family-friendly fashion. These homeowners are from South Africa but have deep roots in their Indian heritage and wanted their new home to reflect the rich and colorful past while embracing a clean, more contemporary style. “She is very stylish herself,” designer Jose J. Cabrera says of his client who “appreciated and wanted lots of detail in her custom home.” In the living room, the entertaining space has been maximized with low-back sofas, comfortable chairs and an acrylic coffee table. The console tables in the living room are in a capiz shell motif. There are also stools for additional seating. The painting is by Charles Marklin and the de Gournay panels can be seen in the background.

he overarching theme is new India to remember and pay homage to their history. “She wanted to make sure it included certain details of the culture, but in an elegant way that was more European and modern. They wanted something spectacular but not trendy,” he adds. But there also needed to be finishes that would
stand up to kids’ play. The interiors took about a year to complete, and the owners
are quite pleased with the results — the husband even told Jose he knocked it out of the park. “It’s fairly neutral with sleek rooms, but there are tiny touches everywhere, including the crystal door knobs with chrome back plates,” he explains. The furnishings and art were selected specifically for the home. “I presented everything to them and even had a separate

meeting with the daughters to get their approval for their rooms. We did use some things from Pottery Barn and West Elm,” he says. But many other items were custom or specially sourced. “Overall it has a well-collected look with pieces that can be handed down to the daughters. The juxtaposition of everything we have done is a testament to that,” he adds. The Indian influences include the striking trio of framed hand-painted and custom-colored de Gournay panels depicting a procession in the foyer. In the dining room, there is a stunning photograph, Moonrise Over Mumbai, by Steve McCurry, which
