EASY CARE FOR YOUR NATURAL STONE

tone countertops and floors, such as granite, marble and other natural stone, have long been loved for the sophisticated and luxurious appearance they add to kitchens and bathrooms. A natural product made by the Earth, natural stone counters and floors come in an endless range of colors accented with unique veins, swirls and crystals. The advantages of stone go beyond just its beautiful appearance and the investment in improving a home’s value. Natural stone is resistant to scratching, more sanitary than other surfaces, durable, and easy to maintain. But easy does not mean maintenance-free. There are steps homeowners need to take in order to protect their investment. “Preserving the beauty of natural stone requires proper care and attention,” said Lenny Sciarrino, a thirdgeneration stone-care expert and co-founder of Granite Gold brand stone-care products. “In fact, many ordinary cleaners are harsh and abrasive, which will have damaging effects on natural stone surfaces.” Cleaning, sealing and polishing are the three essential steps required to keep natural stone looking as beautiful as the day it was installed. Clean often. Even if your surface appears clean, it should be cleaned daily and after every meal preparation. Avoid common cleaners and abrasives, which can break down the protective seal. The result could be costly repairs or even replacement. It’s also important to use a cleaner, such as Granite Gold Daily Cleaner, that is pH balanced, non-toxic, biodegradable and safe for use on all food-preparation surfaces. Check the integrity of the seal. There is a common misperception that natural stone surfaces can be damaged by too much sealing. However, frequent sealing maintains

maximum surface protection, which provides superior, long-lasting resistance to staining, etching and soil build-up. Check the integrity of the seal of your granite with an at-home water test. Pour enough water on your stone to create a circle 3 inches in diameter then repeat in several different locations. Let the water sit for 30 minutes before wiping it away and checking for any dark marks or rings. These indicate the water is penetrating the stone and it’s time to reseal. Polish regularly. Polishing your stone after cleaning brings out its natural beauty and reinforces the protective seal, which provides ongoing protection against water spots and fingerprints. Polishing is particularly important on stone shower walls and tub surrounds to help prevent soap scum build-up. Polishing stone floors is not recommended as it will make the walking surface slick and dangerous. If you have questions about granite cleaning or the care and maintenance of any other natural stone counters, floors and other surfaces, ask the experts at Granite Gold. Submit your questions on Facebook and Twitter or email them at StoneCareExperts@GraniteGold.com.

Building Rock Solid Self Confidence for Women

By Joseph B. Ash

W

omen have experienced some dramatic shifts within many societies over the past century. Although these shifts have empowered and justified many of their roles, we continue to see unrealistic expectations presented to women. Much of this creates a sense of “being good enough” or simply “being enough.” Even as we see a universal effort to heal rigid mindsets, many women are still scared, and continue to carry deeply rooted doubts about themselves and their actions. What’s the underlying cause of this fear and doubt? Perhaps it was instilled in them from an early age, as a caution, or maybe as a direct result of assault. This fear that lyes within many women is still present and holding them back from being their true selves and fulfilling their highest potentials. Building self confidence and self esteem is the answer. Self confidence is defined as freedom from doubt; or simply the ability to believe in yourself and your abilities. In a practical sense, it is the willingness to face new challenges with optimism and trust. It is

(Part 1 of 3) knowing that just being yourself is enough to engage others. How do we acquire self confidence? How do we become empowered and teach these tools to future generations? It begins with you. 1. Start with Self-Acceptance. You are already the best you. You are who you are and you must accept that. People can be mean about the way you look, act or dress, but you don’t have to accept their judgement. All people have a tendency to insult and criticize another as they rise to new levels of success. View it as you are making progress or are becoming more successful. If they give off that negative vibe, then perhaps they no longer need to be in your circle of influence. Try some of these simple changes to your daily routine: Read uplifting books. Books about other peoples’ tragedies do not count. Watch uplifting movies or comedies that make you laugh. Allow yourself to get lost in the world of a good movie. Exercise to the point that you are happy and satisfied, not necessarily to the point of exhaustion. Make it fun to work out, not a chore. OUCH! MY TOOTH HURTS! COMMON CAUSES OF TOOTHACHES AND EFFECTIVE REMEDIES By Kalisha Jordan, DDS MSD

With all of the candy and sweets consumed around (Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween, Christmas) many people also may find themselves treated to a toothache. The good news is that there is a dental specialty dedicated to diagnosing and relieving tooth pain—endodontics. “While not all toothaches are alike, all tooth pain is treatable,” says Sandra Madison, D.D.S., M.S., president of the Chicago-based American Association of Endodontists. “Today’s endodontists use techniques and treatments that are not only effective, but increasingly painless.” Endodontists complete four years of dental school, plus an additional two or more years of specialized training on treating conditions associated with the inside of the tooth. As a result, they are uniquely qualified to relieve toothache pain. Here are the four most common causes of toothaches and the solutions endodontists typically recommend: PROBLEM: Sensitivity to heat or cold. You’re experiencing discomfort for a few moments after tasting hot or cold foods. This generally doesn’t signal anything serious; it may just be a small amount of decay, a loose filling or minimal gum recession that exposes small areas of the root surface. SOLUTION: Try using a toothpaste made for sensitive teeth. Also, because brushing sideways wears away exposed root surfaces, brush up and down with a soft brush. If this doesn’t work, see your endodontist. One last thing: If you just had dental work, know that it could have inflamed the pulp, which are the nerves, blood vessels and connective tissue inside a tooth, causing temporary sensitivity. Wait two to four weeks, and if the problem continues, see your endodontist. PROBLEM: Pain when biting. You feel a sharp pain when you bite down on food. This could mean decay, a loose filling, a crack in the tooth or even damage to the pulp tissue inside the tooth. SOLUTION: See your endodontist. An endodontist will clean out the damaged pulp and fill and seal the remaining space, a treatment commonly known as a root canal. In addition, lingering pain after eating hot or cold foods is usually a sign of pulp damage and may mean a root canal is necessary. PROBLEM: Sensitivity. You feel constant and severe tooth pain and pressure, your gums are swollen and your tooth is sensitive to the touch. You may have an abscess, a pus pocket in the jawbone caused by an infection inside the tooth. SOLUTION: In this case, see an endodontist for evaluation and treatment to relieve the pain and to save the tooth. (Dr. Madison says that if a dentist recommends a tooth extraction or implant, always get an opinion from a specialist in saving your natural teeth—an endodontist.) PROBLEM: Pressure. You’re experiencing a dull ache and pressure in the upper teeth and jaw. This can be caused by a sinus headache or by grinding your teeth (often in your sleep), a condition also known as bruxism. SOLUTION: For a sinus headache, see your physician. For bruxism, or pain that is severe and lasts more than several days, see your endodontist for evaluation. Of course, it’s better to avoid a toothache in the first place. The best way to minimize your chances of experiencing tooth pain is through regular brushing, flossing and dental checkups. But when tooth pain does occur, remember to visit your endodontist. Call Jordan Endodontics at 757.903.2577 to make an appointment today!

WILLIAM & MARY TO HONOR GLENN CLOSE ’74, DAVID SHAW WITH CHEEK AWARD by Megan Shearin | June 27, 2013 Award-winning actress and William & Mary alumna Glenn Close ’74 and her biotech entrepreneur husband, David Shaw, will receive the university’s 2013 Cheek Medal Award for their monumental contributions to the arts as part of a series of events held Sept. 26-29. Close will also headline the second annual Arts & Entertainment Festival. The Cheek Medal is a national arts award given by William & Mary to those who have contributed significantly to the field of museum, performing or visual arts. It is presented by William & Mary’s Muscarelle Museum of Art. “It is quite wonderful that Glenn Close and David Shaw will be in our midst to receive the Cheek Medal for their extraordinary contributions to the arts,” said President Taylor Reveley. “Glenn, of course, is one of our most gifted and distinguished alumnae and a beneficiary of the extraordinary teaching done in William & Mary’s theatre, speech and dance department. And David is an established art collector and lifelong practitioner of the art of business and social entrepreneurship.” While on campus, Close will meet with students and faculty from theatre, speech & dance and film & media studies. She will teach a theatre

master class, and have a discussion of translating a liberal arts degree into a film career. Shaw, who is serving as Executive-in-Residence at the Mason School of Business, will visit the Design Studio and meet with W&M MBA and undergraduate students, as well as business and science faculty to discuss topics such as social entrepreneurship and creativity in business. “I’m thrilled to be going back to William & Mary – thirty-nine years after graduating. And I’m very proud to be able to show my husband, David Shaw, the campus that I love so much and to be receiving the Cheek Award as a couple. What I learned at W&M has sustained me through my adult life and kept me curious about many things other than my own profession. David and I are looking forward to meeting students, faculty and the community-atlarge and hope we can have a fun and delicious dialogue.” Close graduated from William & Mary with a double major in theatre and anthropology. She performed in numerous productions while at the university, including “The Common Glory,” “The Seagull” and “Anything Goes.” She is a six-time Academy Award nominee and has starred in movies such as “Fatal Attraction,” “Dangerous Liaisons,” “101 Dalmatians,” “The Natural,” and “Albert Nobbs,” which she co-produced and co-wrote. Recently, she completed filming two independent features “5 to 7” and “Low Down,” and will soon begin filming “Guardians of the Galaxy.” She has won three Emmys, most recently for her lead role in the television series “Damages.” Her other awards include three Tonys, an Obie, two Golden Globes and a Screen Actors Guild Award. David Shaw’s career has included entrepreneurial business leadership, public service, strategy consulting, teaching and investment management. He is founder of IDEXX, a worldwide leader in the development and commercialization of innovative technology-based products and services for veterinary, food and water applications. He currently serves on the board of the National Park Foundation, and as a Treasurer of AAAS – the world’s largest general scientific association. He is the founding chair of the Sargasso Sea Alliance for

ocean conservation, and an advisor to Discovery Communications. He has served as a Senior Fellow at the Harvard’s Kennedy School of Government and a member of the selection committee for the school’s leadership role modeling Glenn Close & David Shaw program, called America’s Best Leaders. Other public service affiliations have included the Jackson Laboratory, the U.S.-Israel Science and Technology Committee, Service Nation, the Maine Medical Center and Hurricane Island Outward Bound. He is also an enthusiastic collector of contemporary art. Shaw and Close were recognized with the inaugural Maine Creative Industries Award in September 2012 for their excellence in art, innovation and enterprise. In spring 2012, a group of alumni created the Arts & Entertainment Alumni Council to connect alumni working in theatre, film, television, music, and the fine arts in a meaningful way. In fall 2012, they hosted the first Arts & Entertainment Festival. This year’s festival theme is “The Show of Business.” Close’s session will feature a Q&A and discussion about her career and roles in film and theatre. “By taking part in the Arts & Entertainment Festival and sharing her experience with students and other alumni, Glenn will have the opportunity to impart the lessons she’s learned as an actor, director, producer and creator with those who started right where she did,” said Jimmy Finn ’00, a television executive and member of the A&E Council’s Board of Directors. “Her visit to campus will be special. She’s a role model for students and alumni alike, and I can’t think of a better example of a career worth emulating.” Aaron De Groft ’88, director of the Muscarelle, said the museum is “beyond thrilled” to present the Cheek medal to Close and Shaw. continued on page 19

DRESSING FOR SUCCESS ON CAMPUS: A GUIDE TO COLLEGE FASHION ollege students are cash-strapped and timeC crunched. So how can they look fashionable while juggling their studies, campus activities and a part-time job? Integrating basic items into their wardrobes is a start - and adding pops of color with accessories can transform a standard outfit into a standout style.

features more relaxed styling. Blum suggests that college students invest in bold-striped Tshirts, with stripes that vary in width. She adds that prepster-style shirts are a fresh look for both men and women this fall. Also in style - wide-leg jeans and an overall masculine look, says Emilia Valle, program coordinator for fashion at The Art Institute of Houston-North, a branch of The Art Institute of Houston.

Building off fashion staples “For both guys and girls, jeans, jackets and Tshirts are, of course, all staples for a college student’s wardrobe,” says Peggy Blum, fashion program coordinator at The Art Institute of Austin, a branch of The Art Institute of Houston. Blum says that this fall, “blue is heralded as the new black.” Warm reds and oranges, pastels, taxi cab yellow and loden green are also trendy hues. And while skinny jeans still rule the denim world, expect to see them in neon colors, or with printed or bleached treatments. Blum recommends that students seeking a more comfortable fit choose a “boyfriend” jean, which

“The look for the returning college student is definitely a coat or jacket with a strong masculine look. From pastels yes pastels even in fall - to traditional men’s fabrics and some punk flair, this upcoming season is full of overcoats to complete a strong polished style,” Valle says. Accessorizing: from shoulder bags to footwear Army style, denim and long shirt-style jackets are an easy way to accessorize an outfit, according to Blum. “For girls, pink coats are predicted to be a hit this fall straight from the runways.” Other must-have accessories include printed smartphone cases, sporty sneakers or cut-out oxfords and strong gold-tone neckpieces to complete the look while complementing a summer tan. Blum adds that college students are trending away from backpacks and moving toward all-day bags. “A streamlined multipurpose tote will fit any student’s daily must-haves and is appropriate for campus to work or travel.” Valle mentions that choosing a large leather tote will add a touch of class to a student’s overall look. “A large leather tote will work fab and still keep you in style.” Thrifty looks: fashion on a budget Students on a tight budget might wonder how they can incorporate fashionable pieces into their wardrobe. Valle suggests mixing old and new to create a fresh, budgetfriendly look. “Remember, consignment and thrift stores can make a fashion budget stretch longer, and of course you can help out the planet in the process by recycling someone else’s retro fashion pieces,” she adds. And the runway trend toward disheveled grunge styles should be helpful to those seeking recycled pieces. “A nod to grunge every now and then works this season,” states Blum.

10 RENEW AUGUST 2013

The do-it-yourself trend is also extremely popular with fashionable, budget-conscious college students. “Thrifting at second hand shops, yard sales, or swapping clothing is a costeffective way to remain fashionable on a budget,” she says. Looking fashionable while attending college doesn’t have to be time-consuming or budgetbreaking. By choosing a few staple items and adding colorful accessories, students can make it to class on time and on-trend.

HERE WE GO AGAIN: PREPARING FOR ANOTHER SCHOOL YEAR! by Tatrece Dunlap Swann

Believe it or not....we have just about reached what I call the ‘half way point’ of summer, and while I look forward to celebrating a birthday at the end of July, the beginning of August marks the middle of summer. As parents, it’s when we begin to think in terms of ‘Back to School’, and as I walk through the aisles of the stores, I see the advertisements - ‘Shop early for the best prices’; ‘Save on all the essentials’...and I wonder - just where oh where did the summer go? Whether you’re a parent or a teacher, we all in some way will turn our attentions away from the summer camps and vacations, and on to resources that will help us prepare for the new school year. In preparation for the upcoming school year, it’s a good idea to create a check list of items to remember. Many schools will require documentation and immunization records for new and returning students, particularly if they will be playing sports. Some schools may post those requirements on their websites, so start gathering now. As I look to another year of parent/teacher meetings, homework and class projects, there’s one thing I know for sure - developing a routine for your family will give you the successful start you need. As you prepare to send your children back to school, remember that nutrition plays an important role in your child’s academic performance. Studies have shown that a healthy, balanced breakfast and lunch will help your child be more alert throughout the school day. So as they prepare to go out into the world, start the day by saying a little prayer for protection and know that you’ve provided them with the tools they’ll need to soar- Here’s to a successful school year! I TOP 10 SKILLS YOU NEED According to research by Apollo Group, parent company of University of Phoenix, successful workers in the 21st century need certain skills. Here’s what employers are looking for - and how you can get them through education: • Leadership - Being a great employee is different than being a great leader. Look for coursework that emphasizes leadership skills and enables you to lead teams. • Critical thinking - Take coursework that offers an opportunity to engage in self-directed, project-based and applied learning. • Communication - Learn in an environment that requires participation in many modes of communication. • Collaboration - Choose courses that are collaborative and also measure success by team results. • Productivity and accountability - Develop an organization and communication system that accounts for short-term and long-term projects. • Adaptability - Take advantage of flexible course schedules and learning platforms in order to work, raise a family, volunteer and learn. • Innovation - Seek out learning environments that build technology and media fluency.

smell crayons and glue in the air because summer is over and it’s back-toschool time! While many of us are excited to get our children back into the routine of school and regain control of our refrigerators, we must also think about the prospects and implications of continuing our own education. It is so easy to recite the importance of learning to our children; however, I wonder if adults are as easily persuaded? Have you ever asked, “Is it too late to finish my degree, take a class, or pursue an advanced degree?” Well, the time is now. As a high school biology teacher and full time PhD student in Education, I know my actions speak louder [than words] to my daughters because they see mommy studying and doing homework, while working and caring for our family. So, if I want my children to embrace lifelong learning, then I too must do the same. We all have a zillion excuses not to, but my formula for success begins with making a commitment to yourself and you will be well on the way to realizing your dream. Remember, being a life-long learner is a journey, not a destination. Janice Underwood serves as a master special education teacher and lead biology teacher at Hampton High School in Hampton, VA.

• Accessing, analyzing and synthesizing information - Seek out a market-driven curriculum focused on real workplace issues to help you think about how to interconnect. • Entrepreneurialism - Improve your problemsolving abilities with class projects and case studies that tackle issues and require analysis and strategic planning. • Global citizenship - Learn in a diverse classroom to build cross-cultural understanding.

TIPS FOR SENIORS CITIZENS TO STAY COOL IN SUMMER HEAT

ummer is a season when many activities take place outdoors, with warm temperatures and long days. As people venture outside to enjoy their favorite summer pastime, extremely high temperatures can affect the body’s ability to keep cool. “Although anyone can be vulnerable to summer heat, some people are at greater risk than others,” said Rosa Hopkins, BSN/RN of Right at Home Williamsburg. “Persons over age 65 particularly are at high risk for suffering a heat-related illness.” Follow these tips to protect you and elderly loved ones from heat-related illness: • Drink cool, nonalcoholic beverages; if your doctor generally limits the amount of fluid you drink or prescribes water pills for you, ask how much you should drink when the weather is hot • Rest • Take a cool shower, bath or sponge bath • Seek an air-conditioned environment; if your home is not air conditioned, visit an air-conditioned shopping mall, movie theater or public library to cool off • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting, cotton clothing; if outdoors, wear a hat • Plan outdoor activities in early morning when it is cooler Visit or check on elderly relatives, friends and neighbors who are at risk at least twice a day and watch them for signs of heat stroke or heat exhaustion. If you are unable to check up on an elderly relative, consider contacting Right at Home Williamsburg for assistance. Trained and bonded caregivers are available to ensure that your loved one is staying cool and drinking plenty of fluids during the hot summer months. They also can transport your loved one to an air-conditioned location if necessary in order to escape extreme heat. If you observe a person who may be suffering from heat stroke, instruct someone to call for immediate medical assistance while you begin cooling the affected person by doing the following: • Take the person to a shady area or an air-conditioned facility • Cool the person rapidly by any means necessary – immerse the person in a tub of cool water, place the person in a cool shower, spray the person with cool water from a garden hose or sponge the person with cool water • Offer fluids such as water and fruit and vegetable juices, but avoid alcohol and caffeine Right at Home, Inc. of Williamsburg offers in-home care and assistance to seniors and disabled adults who want to continue to live independently. Right at Home offices directly employ all caregiving staff. Each caregiver is thoroughly screened, trained, bonded and insured prior to entering a client’s home. Q

: What sort of credentials does MHO have?

A: On staff, we have a Certified Aging in Place Specialist. MHO is also fully insured and a Class A Contractor.

Q

: What do you recommend to the adult children of aging parents?

A: Encourage your parents’ to have their home assessed for fall prevention. Be proactive and do not wait until after an injury has occurred. It is much more difficult and costly to react to a stressful situation. We will do a free home assessment. It helps to have an “outsider”make suggestions. Also, there are immense financial advantages to staying at home as opposed to moving to institutionalized care. CLEANING THE RIGHT WAY TO REMOVE ALLERGENS

M

ore than 40 million Americans suffer from allergy problems, and 25 million have asthma. If your cleaning routine doesn’t specifically focus on allergen control and removal, you may be only moving dust around, sending allergens and irritating cleaning chemicals into the air which can affect allergy and asthma symptoms. To maximize your cleaning efforts and reduce allergens, consider these simple tips from the asthma & allergy friendly Certification Program, the healthy home initiative of the nonprofit Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America (AAFA): • Use a certified vacuum that has a high efficiency filter with tight seams and seals to prevent particles from leaking out while you vacuum. Also, choose a style that requires minimal exposure during canister emptying or bag changes. • Dusting improperly can actually increase airborne dust particles in your home. Use moist cloths or special dry dusters designed to trap and lock dust from hard surfaces. Use vacuum attachments to remove dust from soft and upholstered surfaces. • Certain cleaning products can also contribute to airborne irritants, especially if they contain harsh chemicals, strong odors or volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Choose products that contain none of these irritants, but also beware of “green” labels, as some of these solutions may be made with natural allergenic ingredients, such as lemon, coconut or tea-tree oils. • Rodent dander and cockroach particles are common household asthma triggers. However, some pesticides may do more harm than good for people with asthma and allergies. If you have a pest problem, look for an exterminator with expertise in integrated pest management and experience treating homes of people with asthma. • Mold, a common allergy trigger, can grow anywhere in your home where moisture is present. Look for cleaning products that help kill and prevent mold from returning. Also, keep household humidity below 50 percent and fix leaky pipes and cracks to reduce standing puddles of moisture where mold can prosper. Keep in mind that while consumers spend nearly $18 billion annually on asthma and allergy medications, they also spend more than $20 billion on nonmedical consumer products marketed for people with asthma and allergies such as room air cleaners, bedding, vacuums and more, according to AAFA. While demand for such products continues to grow, there is little regulation governing product claims, the Foundation notes. AAFA’s asthma and allergy friendly Certification Program helps consumers evaluate and verify the allergen-reducing effectiveness of a variety of products, from cleaning supplies, air cleaning devices and vacuums to toys, bedding, home improvement products, paints, clothes washers and more. Jen glanced over her shoulder. She didn’t like having to stop at the off-the-beaten path convenience store after dark, but it was the only one between Barrett’s house and her place. Her and Marla’s fridge had become almost completely bare, housing only a block of cheese, a few sodas, and some Part 23 lettuce. Nothing even remotely breakfast like. She could make oatmeal with water, if they had any. They really needed to work out a grocery run schedule. The cashier rang up her milk, coffee, and granola bars, giving her the total in an eastern accent. “Twenty-one, eightytwo.” Pulling the cash out of her wallet, she handed it over and waited on her change. “Thanks.” She grabbed her bag of goodies in one hand and shoved the ones and coins in her purse with the other. Jen fumbled for her keys, finally finding them below everything else in her purse. She pulled them out and glanced back as a black sedan rolled behind her through the parking lot. The key found its mark and turned. Jen reached for the handle and gasped when a hand grabbed her arm. “Hey, pretty thing. You shouldn’t be out like this by yourself. You’ll get lonely.” Jen looked back to see a scruffy guy in his twenties. Spiky blonde hair, unshaven, and tattoos pasted all over his arms and neck. She gripped her keys in her shaking hand. Her stomach lurched and she twisted her body. “Let me go.” “Nah. That doesn’t sound like fun.” The sedan pulled up behind the guy. Someone to help, maybe? Another art covered guy leaned out the passenger window. “Come on, man, let’s go.” The rear door swung open and the grubby hand yanked Jen away from her car. She screamed and whirled her hand gripping her keys at his face. She made contact and he let out a string of curse words. His grip didn’t loosen as he shoved her towards the awaiting car. Jen’s screams reverberated in her ears as she flailed her arms and kicked her legs. “Hey! What’s going on out here?” The guy released Jen’s arm and dove in the car as she fell to the ground. Tires squealed as a kind brown hand reached down. Jen looked up into the Indian cashier’s worried face. “Are you okay, ma’am?” Jen burst into tears and nodded. The sound of crunching metal popped her head towards her assailants’ fleeing path. The darker, four-door car sat cockeyed on the two lane road, the side smashed in by a small, red car, its front end no longer visible. Jen turned back to the gentle man at her side, eyes wide. The shaking in her body seemed to relieve her of any ability to talk, or think. “I’ve already called 911. I left my cell in the store. Do you have one? I should probably call again to make sure they send an ambulance.” Jen nodded, searching the ground around her for her purse. It lay sprawled by her car. He reached a long, thin arm and pulled it to them. Jen pulled her phone out of its specially designed pocket and handed it to him. Would her body ever stop trembling? She pulled her knees up and wrapped her arms around them, watching the scene on the road. Several cars had stopped near the accident. A woman, blood splattered on her face and clothes, screamed, “My baby, my baby. Someone help me.” A burly man yanked the rear passenger door several times before it opened. A moment later he turned to the mother holding a little girl. She hung limply in his arms. Distant sirens grew louder and closer. The cashier still talked on her cell phone. But all the noise was drowned out by one thought. It’s all my fault.

DO YOU HAVE A CONCRETE REMOVAL OR REPLACEMENT DILEMMA?

T

here is always a dilemma on whether to to use a patching compound and resurfacing product or have your concrete completely removed and replaced. Patching & surfacing will result in a short-term fix and potentially be a waste of time and money, as the surface or topping will eventually display the same problems as it had before. Many times problems develop such as: • Inadequate compaction of the subgrade, not completely removing tree stumps, roots, topsoil and any other matter that will eventually decompose and cause voids to develop. • Deep, widespread cracks where settlement has occurred. • Concrete slabs that have sunk, which may occur when the sub grade was not prepared properly. • Concrete slabs that have so much spalling or pitting on the surface that is it

more economical to replace the concrete rather than prepare the entire surface for resurfacing and resurfacing the concrete. • Addition to a commercial or residential building requires removing concrete that is in the way of the addition. • The entire structure is being removed of which the concrete is a part of the structure. • There is faulty concrete construction which the owner wants torn out and replaced. The recommended solution that will eliminate a future repeat of the same problem is to remove the damaged concrete, fix the the underlying problem, and pour back new concrete. Concrete is an investment and should be viewed as a long-term home improvement. It is always a wise decision to obtain several quotes from licensed and insured contractors before making a decision on whom to hire to do the work. Remember the old adage, “You get what you pay for”, so it’s best not to consider just price in your final decision. Choose the contractor who is knowledgeable, dependable, reputable, has an eye for beauty, and she will do the best work possible for you.

They made me feel very comfortable with leaving her there with them and they let me know that it was okay for me to call and check up on her as much as I like. They also let me know that if I wanted to come in and spend some time in the classroom with her that it wasn’t a problem. My daughter is now 2 years old and I am still very pleased with the care she is getting. Their curriculum is great and my daughter is learning so much. They have a great
