ata theft has become an issue that affects the lives of nearly everyone in the United States. At least six bills active in Congress this year aim to help mitigate problems with data security standards and practices. Yet, legislation is not necessary to take an immediate and giant leap forward toward better data security. Consumer credit card transactions should be much more secure - and could be today - but it continues to unnecessarily lag behind the rest of the world.
(Family Features)
In October 2014, President Obama issued an Executive Order calling for all government-issued payment cards to be equipped with chip and PIN technology - the most secure payment system available today. Chip and PIN is the preferred security all over the world as it is used in most of Europe and Australia, as well as many parts of Africa and South America. However, the big banks that issue major cards, credit unions and other financial institutions have not taken similar steps to protect their customers. Instead, they are replacing existing magnetic stripe cards with microchipequipped cards that still rely on unsecure signatures as a form of verification.
“While it’s a small step in the right direction, they are consciously failing to protect their customers by not offering all of the available security measures. The PIN is a necessary element of the equation to protect consumers,” said Debra Berlyn, leader of ProtectMyData, a consumer education campaign advocating for the implementation of chip and PIN technology for credit and debit cards. “The PIN requirement adds a distinct layer of security and complexity to each transaction that dramatically reduces fraud.”
(BPT)
Financial information stored on existing payment cards’ magnetic stripes can be easily cloned and used to make counterfeit cards. What’s more, the signatures can be easily forged and are rarely ever used to verify the identity of someone making a transaction. Chip and PIN cards are considerably more secure. First, an embedded microchip encrypts each transaction at point of sale and then requires a unique fourdigit code to be entered to complete the transaction, similar to withdrawing money from the ATM. The microchip coupled with the PIN make tampering and counterfeiting the cards, along with stealing personal financial data, nearly impossible. The combination of chip and PIN clearly provides American consumers the security they deserve. Now, it’s time for the banks and credit card companies to issue cards outfitted with this technology. To learn more about efforts underway to help secure your everyday transactions, visit www.protectmydata.org. Get the Facts MYTH: Current payment security measures are keeping consumers safe. FACT: Not really. Card fraud is still a major issue that affects millions of Americans each year. The United States accounted for 47 percent of worldwide card fraud losses according to recent reports. MYTH: The United States is a global leader in credit card security, using the most secure and cuttingedge technology available. FACT: The United States is lagging behind. In fact, the United States is the last G-20 nation to issue chip-equipped cards. U.S. banks and credit card companies have been slow to provide consumers with chip and PIN protections that are commonplace around the world. MYTH: Chip-equipped cards without PIN requirements provide sufficient security. FACT: Chip-equipped cards that rely on signature validation and not PIN technology do not fully protect consumers. Only the chip and PIN combination offers a two-step verification process that is nearly impossible to clone. MYTH: Consumers are moving away from credit cards. FACT: While payment alternatives like ApplePay and other mobile options are slowly entering the market, nearly three-quarters of all Americans had at least one credit card in 2014. Moreover, not every American consumer has the means to use more sophisticated mobile payment options and others particularly consumers with more modest means - rely on paying with credit at times. MYTH: The implementation of chip and PIN will drive hackers online, rendering in-store protections like PINs or signatures less important. FACT: Brick and mortar stores remain a bedrock component of the American economy and the retail industry. Most Americans still rely on offline shopping for the majority of their retail purchases.

ASK
DR. J JANICE UNDERWOOD
Welcome back to Ask Dr. J. This month we have only one question and it is about bullying, Julia: I am emailing you because the recent death of a 14-year girl, who the news says killed herself because she was bullied has impacted me and my children so strongly that I needed to reach out to someone to help me process it all and help my kids do the same. How do I talk to my kids about this‌it is all over the news?
Dr. J: Thank you Julia for your question. I too was completely heartbroken to learn of the passing of Deja Jones, a Woodside High student, who reportedly committed suicide because she was being bullied. Julia, this is a tragedy, and our prayers and constant thoughts go to her family who are justifiably devastated and outraged. This incredibly sad story has permeated all news and media outlets in the Hampton Roads area; and as a result, it is a story that is increasingly difficult to shield from children, especially those who are exposed to the news or who may have heard about it in other ways. To this point, to address this with children, I offer the following: First, there is no getting around the idea that this is a tough conversation to have; but, the best advice I can give is to honestly talk with your children (in age appropriate ways) about what has happened. Secondly, answer their questions and show them that you are a source of support because they may or may not understand how to handle or manage their feelings and emotions. Thirdly and probably most importantly, talk very openly about bullying in general. Bullying is happening at every age level to include elementary, middle, high, college, and in the workforce. So, it is important for parents to keep this dialogue going long after this story is out of the news to protect children from being bullied or becoming a bully. If parents and families need more support, they can contact their child’s school counselor or family doctor for further recommendations. gh Thank you to everyone who submitted a question or comment. If you would like to submit a question, you can email me directly and confidentially at janicebellunderwood@gmail.com and your question could be featured in an upcoming issue of RENEW Magazine. I can’t wait to hear from you! Dr. Janice Underwood teaches at Old Dominion University, where she trains preservice teachers to engage diverse learners in K-12 science classrooms. MAY 2016 RENEW

MEANINGFUL, MOVING WAYS TO SUPPORT VETERANS THIS
MEMORIAL DAY “All gave some. Some gave all.” You likely hear that phrase around Memorial Day every year, but do you know its origin? Or what Memorial Day is supposed to mean to the veterans who gave some, the survivors of those who gave all, and the Americans who enjoy continued freedom because of those sacrifices? Americans, it seems, do understand the importance of Memorial Day. A 2015 poll by Rasmussen Reports found 52 percent of those polled viewed Memorial Day as one of the nation’s most important holidays, while 42 percent saw it as at least somewhat important.
(BPT)
When Americans first began observing the day in the late 1860s, they were pausing to remember the more than half a million Americans who had died in the then-recently ended Civil War. Today, Memorial Day observances not only remember the sacrifice of the deceased who gave all, but also the thousands of living veterans, many of whom are wounded in body, mind or both. “Amid the celebrations marking the unofficial start of the summer season, it can be difficult to find meaningful ways to observe Memorial Day,” says Jeff Roy, chairman of the board of the Purple Heart Foundation, a non-profit organization that provides counseling, support and advocacy for Purple Heart recipients, and raises funds for programs that support veterans and their families. “But Americans truly do want to express their gratitude to veterans for their many sacrifices. Fortunately, there are many ways they can help make a difference for veterans.” Here are some meaningful ways you can show your support for veterans this Memorial Day: • Help provide a service dog to a veteran with physical disabilities or PTSD. The National Education for Assistance Dog Services (NEADS) provides service dogs for free to qualifying veterans. You can help by making an online donation, sponsor a “doggie dorm” for service dogs in training, raise a puppy who will become a service dog, or become a volunteer. Visit the organization’s website at www.neads.org to learn more. • Donate to the Purple Heart Foundation’s scholarship program, which provides financial support to Purple Heart recipients and their families for college-related expenses like tuition, books, and room and board. • Instead of spending the day indulging in your own cookout, contact the local veterans’ home or veterans’ hospital and volunteer there for the day. Or, you can simply take an hour or two to visit with the residents there and thank them for their service. • Visit the local cemetery and place flags or flowers on the graves of veterans. Contact the cemetery first for their visiting guidelines and to learn where the veterans section is located - many cemeteries have special sections set aside for veterans. • Help ensure veterans make the most of the services available to them. Donate to the Purple Heart Foundation’s National Service Officers Program, which helps pay to place service officers in Veterans Administration facilities across the country. These officers are specially trained to help veterans access the many benefits, programs and services available to them. • If your community sponsors a Memorial Day parade, attending is a great way to show your appreciation and support for veterans - but you can do even more. Prior to the event, contact the parade organizers and find out what veterans groups will be marching in the parade. Offer to donate water, snacks or anything else the veterans may need to make their walk easier and more enjoyable. • Pick up the phone and call the veterans in your life - almost everyone knows at least one person who has served in the military. Perhaps your grandfather served in World War II, the Korean War or Vietnam. You may know someone who has recently returned from serving in the Global War on Terror. Take some time to let those people know you’re thinking of them, and appreciate their service. • Observe the National Moment of Remembrance at 3 p.m. on Memorial Day, Monday, May 30. Established by Congress, the one-minute observance is an chance for all Americans to pause in the middle of their summer celebrations to remember the sacrifices of the nation’s veterans. From simple and small to noble and industrious, it’s possible to find many meaningful ways to honor all who gave some and the some who gave all. And as for that now-famous phrase - it was first uttered by Howard William Osterkamp of Dent, Ohio, a Korean War veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart.

ARTS - JUST AS CRUCIAL AS MATH AND SCIENCE, SAY EDUCATION EXPERTS
(StatePoint)
Science, Technology, Engineering and Math -- known collectively as STEM -- has been the buzz phrase for educators for some time. But, with many school districts eliminating art, music and other humanities classes, there has been a recent push by educators to change the focus from STEM to STEAM, and add arts back into the mix for a more well-rounded education.
“Many experts agree that STEAM education is a great way to engage children of all ages in creative play, discovery and learning,” says Dr. Eric Klopfer, Platform Learning Expert and member of the Expert Panel at VTech, a world leader in age-appropriate and developmental stagebased electronic learning products for children. Whatever the present academic focus of your local school district is, you can help support a more comprehensive education for your children at home, while making it fun. Here’s how to incorporate STEAM learning into your children’s playtime: Art Time The school day may not offer daily opportunities for creativity to flourish, but you can turn the playroom at home into an artists’ studio. Keep on hand arts and crafts supplies such as glue, construction paper, glitter, scissors, string and paint. Take a trip to a museum or gallery and learn about different artists and styles to get kids inspired. New Technologies Handing over your expensive, breakable mobile technology to your young children may not sound ideal for on-the-go learning, but there are durable tablets built for children that support learning apps combining STEM subjects with the arts. For example, InnoTab MAX, VTech’s most powerful and versatile 7-inch tablet, features access to more than 650 educator-supported apps, including hand-picked Android learning games and age-appropriate learning software and content through VTech’s Learning Lodge, as well as creative onboard apps such as Movie Maker and Art Studio. The apps feature a wide curriculum of language arts and reading, math, science, social studies, problem solving and creativity, that have been reviewed by a panel of education and child development experts. Music Participation in music education has been proven to improve grades in STEM subjects. Not only that, it’s a ton of fun. If your school offers opportunities such as band or chorus, encourage your kids to get involved. If arts programs are scarce, invest in a keyboard or guitar for the home. Even if private music lessons are out of the budget, there are plenty of online tutorials that can help with the basics. While there’s no doubt that math and science comprehension are critical, education experts advise parents to support an interdisciplinary approach to learning that incorporates the arts as well.

GREENING YOUR HOME:
START AT THE TAP
I
n today’s environmentally conscious times, it seems we’re surrounded by the need to shop, act and live “green.”
According to Kevin McJoynt at Danze, Inc. some of the most important green choices we can make are right within our own home. “Installing items like Energy Star appliances and energy-efficient windows is a great step in moving your home to be more green,” says McJoynt. “But changing your in-home water usage can have the most impact.” “Water shortages, energy demands and the cost of transporting water continue to rise,” he says. “Finding ways to simply reduce our usage without dramatically altering our lifestyle could save billions of gallons of water each year in the United States.” McJoynt offers up these tips on how to immediately conserve water (and save money) in your home: • Replace older toilets (1992 or earlier) with newer, highefficiency models. They operate at 1.28 gallons per flush and could save 11 gallons of water per toilet per day. • Be sure to turn off the tap when brushing your teeth - it could save nearly 3,000 gallons of water per year. • Always turn the water off between tasks. Letting your faucet run for five minutes uses about as much energy as letting a 60watt light bulb run for 14 hours. • Make sure to wash only full loads of laundry. Using a highefficiency washing machine is ideal, as they use about 28 gallons of water per load, versus an average machine that uses 41 gallons. • Take a shower rather than a bath. A full bath tub requires up to 70 gallons of water, while taking a five-minute shower uses 10 to 25 gallons. Want to be even more efficient? Switch your showerhead to a water-saving option. • According to the Environmental Protection Agency WaterSense program, if every household in the United States installed WaterSense-labeled bathroom sink faucets, we could save more than $350 million in water utility bills and more than 60 billion gallons of water annually, plus $600 million in energy costs for heating the water. 10 RENEW MAY 2016

Whether you’re at work or on the town, you want your clothes to look their best. However, limited time and money can pose challenges to building and maintaining a great wardrobe. Dan Lawson, costume designer for “The Good Wife” on CBS, offers the following tips to look put-together wherever you go, no matter what your budget is.
• Be willing to invest money in “workhorse pieces,” those items you can wear for a long time that will be instrumental to each look. Staples for women include skirts, trousers and a good pair of shoes. For men, a well-fitted suit, a good dress shirt, shoes and a nice bag or briefcase.
“Having a few key staples will give you the foundation for dozens of different outfits, as long as you take good care of these workhorse pieces and keep them in good condition,” says Lawson, whose work in costume design and wardrobe has garnered him Emmy nominations and theater awards.
• Set aside a portion of your wardrobe budget on trendy items that may not last forever, but will • Remember that well-fitted clothes can make or make your outfits pop while the items are in style. You can affordably prevent fading, shrinking and stretching with an at-home dry cleaning product. Lawson uses Dryel on-set to refresh clothing quickly. It’s an at-home kit that comes with special cloths, similar to dryer sheets, with special cleansers infused in them that steam clean your clothes in your dryer. The kit includes a protection bag and a spot cleaning booster spray, and requires only 15 minutes in the dryer or 30 minutes for a deeper clean -and is a great time- and money-saving alternative to taking clothing to the dry cleaners, costing only 25 cents per item.
