CHANGE UP YOUR ROUTINE HEALTHY WAYS TO REINVENT YOURSELF ging gracefully is as much about feeling good on the inside as feeling good on the outside. It’s never too late to make changes to reinvent yourself and maximize your mental and physical wellbeing.

capture your attention, such as news articles or engaging conversations. Over time, look for patterns to emerge. Topics or themes rising(BPT) to the top could signal a special interest you may have overlooked in the past.

Self-improvement is at the top of many women’s to-do lists, and doing so can take many forms. Follow these tips to become your own best friend and take steps toward creating a happier, healthier you.

Nurture valuable relationships. Knowing (and loving) yourself comes first, but having a strong support system is also important for overall wellbeing. While it’s important for women to surround themselves with people who will boost them up, that boost doesn’t always have to come from another woman. When they need a good laugh, 59 percent of women in the Great Grains survey said they turn to their significant other.

Give proper attention to your diet. A common form of reinvention is improving your eating habits. A balanced diet that promotes a healthy digestive system is an important step in creating a healthier you. Starting each day with a nutritious breakfast is one easy change. Fill your menu with nutrition you can see and wholesome ingredients, such as those in Great Grains Digestive Blend cereals, which have active cultures in addition to whole grains and natural fiber.

Investing time to strengthen your personal connections improves not only the health of those relationships, but the effects of those relationships on your physical health, as well. While charting a new path may seem daunting, focusing on your physical and mental health as you work to introduce change into your life can smooth the way to reinventing a better and brighter you. For more information, visit www.greatgrains.com.

Take time to understand yourself. Digging deep to understand your true passions may help reveal a new, more fulfilling path in life, whether it be in the form of new hobbies or even a new career. If you’re not sure where to start, begin by making a running list of situations, which

Glowing, Vibrant Skin Poor diet, sun exposure and smoking are just a few of the factors that can lead to the fine lines and wrinkles many women work hard to prevent. While everyone would love a quick fix to erase years of skin abuse, there are some tricks to slow down the process. Covering your skin from the sun’s harmful rays and keeping its damaging ultraviolet rays at bay helps ward off premature aging and helps to preserve the skin. Whether it’s cloudy or sunny, your best defense is to apply sun screen that contains an SPF of 30 or higher. You can further decrease your exposure by use of wide brim hats, baseball caps and other skin-covering clothing. Invest in a quality night cream that works deeply to restore the skin’s appearance as you sleep. Some products offer multiple benefits that firm,

improve elasticity and reduce the appearance of wrinkles.

The Perfect Pout Like any other part of your skin, lips can become dry and flaky, particularly when exposed to harsh weather conditions or extreme settings. Give them proper nourishment and care to keep them smooth, supple and free of cracks and irritation. To exfoliate rough patches and remove dead skin, use natural ingredients right from your kitchen. Simply place a small dab of honey and sugar on your lips and gently rub them together. This procedure is best before bed time and followed with a thick coating of lip balm. This will penetrate and renew as you sleep and you’ll wake up to plump, smooth and beautiful lips. To maintain lip moisture, invest in a quality lip balm, especially those that pull doubleduty and also offer sun protection.

Healthy, Strong Nails Used throughout the day for arduous tasks, nails experience a great deal of wear and tear and are often easy to neglect. Give nails the attention they deserve with a fun spring hue, like mint green or vibrant yellow. When it’s time to refresh your nails or experiment with new colors, be sure to always have the proper tools on hand, such as Studio 35 Nail Polish Remover Liquid. Boost your beauty regimen by adding a few of these simple tips into your day, every day. Remember, when you feel good about yourself the whole world can see it. For thousands of great products to help enhance your beauty regimen, visit your local Walgreens or visit www.walgreens.com/beauty.

he children in your families are in no way thinking about going back to school, but my guess is that by now, you are reading for them to return to the care of their teachers and school buildings. As a teacher for the last 15 years, I admit I truly enjoy the summer time because it gives me a chance to connect with my own children, get projects completed around the house, engage in creative learning opportunities, and spend time with family and friends. However, I realize it is now time that I get back into “teacher mode.” Nevertheless, no matter the time of year, friends, family, and even total strangers often ask me my opinions about school related matters going on with their child(ren). So, in thinking about getting ready for a new school year, I wondered what could I do differently to help parents and families navigate the next 10 months. Therefore, I decided to launch an on-going initiative where YOU the reader can anonymously send a comment, question, or concern you are having related to K-16 education, and I will concisely and honestly answer it. 4 WAYS TO REDUCE COLLEGE COSTS IN HIGH SCHOOL 1. Earn college credit in high school. Many high schools offer students the opportunity to earn dual high school and college credit, before college, through advanced placement (AP) courses. You can learn more about AP programs online. Photo courtesy of Getty Images

2. Consider a community college. Average annual community college tuition and fees are less than half those at public four-year colleges and universities and one-tenth those at private four-year colleges and universities, according to a 2008 report from the National Center of Education Statistics.

3. Learn about college savings financial options. There are many different financial products to help save for college. Under certain circumstances, some colleges and universities lock in tuition for all four years. Even certain life insurance policies offer cash savings options to help pay for expenses such as college tuition, weddings, or starting up a business. Look for permanent or whole life policies with cash value accumulation options. 4. Research scholarships early. Scholarships are available for traditional and non-traditional students, but don’t wait until senior year to research. Some require organizational membership, volunteer hours, or criteria that may take time for the student to be eligible. “Royal Neighbors of America believes that every woman and her family should be financially secure and that education is the key to a brighter future,” said Tidwell. “Don’t be discouraged by rising college costs. There are ways to save if you plan ahead.” To learn more about scholarships and other member programs available through Royal Neighbors of America, log on to www.royalneighbors.org or call (800) 6274762.

love farmers markets. The gentle chatter, the fresh smells, and of course, the delicious flavors all combine for a relaxing and refreshing way to start the day. Everyone is bustling around with their huge tote bags, wagons, and other methods of bringing home their local treasures from that week. You see people smelling flowers, tasting samples and just enjoying their Saturday mornings. The Williamsburg Farmers’ Market has been around for a little over a decade now (They actually celebrated their 12th year anniversary on the Saturday we visited). Currently their vendor list is close to 60 participants, with about 40 of them hosting tables each week. You’ll find a variety of goodies to choose from, including your staples like flowers, breads, pastries and produce. But then you have other vendors offering unique items such as bison meat, knife sharpening, gourmet popsicles, lamb, sheep’s

milk cheese and goat’s milk soap. Our personal favorite table was the Virginia Apprentice Chefs table where they offered a tempting array of baked goods. We couldn’t resist their rustic English muffins and pretzel rolls. Next we picked up some bakery items from another vendor and then proceeded to a vegetable stand to let our two daughters each choose some veggies. We ended up bringing home an eggplant, a couple banana peppers, a bunch of carrots, and some blackberries from the berry stand. Taking these fresh items home to cook and eat them throughout the week was a real treat. I made some carrot greens pesto spread with the carrot tops from the market and slathered it on a grilled cheese this afternoon. My three year old and I both agreed it was delicious. I’m sure you will find some inventive ways to use your produce from the market as well. Maybe we will bump into each other the next time I get an itch for some fresh ingredients on a Saturday.

English muffins from the Virginia Apprentice Chefs table. They were not like any English muffins I had tried before. They were taller, more dense, yet still fluffy and of course, tasty. I’m not sure if these are more like authentic English muffins or not, but who cares. They were good. What I Would Try Next Time: I am somewhat obsessed with pies and even to this day ask my mom to make her strawberry rhubarb pie for my birthday instead of cake. So, next time I would like to hit up one of the pie making vendors to see what amazing flavors they can pack into a pie. M

arla blinked her eyes and focused them on Joseph. He’d just said something about an upcoming Sunday school class outing. She had no idea what it was. Focusing shouldn’t be that hard. She loved her class and getting refreshed each week. However, her mind Part 9 refused to stay attuned to the conversation volleying by Tracy Wainwright around her. She hadn’t confronted Amber about the diary entry she’d read. She didn’t want to offend or upset her new roommate, but she didn’t know how to let it go, either. There had to be some way to engage Amber. To bring up God in a way that would open her up to His truth. A different strategy, that’s what she needed. “Yes, Carlos. You have something?” Joseph’s voice interrupted her thoughts. “Unspoken.” “All right. Anyone else?” Why was it her mind tuned in when Carlos spoke? Really, when his name was brought up. She would not give in to his obvious obsession with wanting her to go out with him. She was not interested. What she was was concerned about her roommate. Her hand flew up. “Marla?” “I’d like to put my new roommate on the prayer list.” “Okay. Anything specific?” “She’s, um, unsaved. And things have been a little rough.” “Sure thing.” A few more requests were added to the list and then Joseph opened with a prayer. Throughout the rest of the morning, her mind continued to wander. She waffled between trying to figure out how to reach Amber and avoiding meeting Carlos’ gaze. Finally the hour was over. She’d never been so relieved to see the clock reach noon. She sighed when Joseph closed the class out. She stood and headed toward the door. A hand on her arm halted her progress. Turning, her heart fell as she saw it was Carlos. “Hey. You’re in a hurry today.” She shrugged. “Not feeling the best.” “Are you sick?” His eyebrows raised in concern. “No.” She shook her head. “It’s this thing with your roommate, then.” “Yeah, I guess.” “It seems to really be bogging you down.” “She’s so different from Jen. Different from anyone I’ve come into contact with. I’ve never met someone so hostile to God.” He grinned. “They’re a whole lot more challenging than someone who’s just questioning or doesn’t know what to believe.” “No kidding.” Yet he was smiling. For her, on the other hand, it built a headache. “Have you been praying about it?” “Of course.” “No, I mean really praying about it. Seeking God and giving it up to Him. You know, instead of calculating all the right things to say and do to fix her.” Marla swallowed. He shouldn’t know her that well. She met his gaze. “That’s what I thought.” He grabbed her hand. “Try letting go. She’s not a client to fix.” He was right. But with the heat shooting up her hand from his touch, her brain had lost almost all thoughts about her roommate.

WHAT’S THE TOP LEARNING STYLE IN AMERICA? HANDS-ON WINS HANDS DOWN, SURVEY SAYS

C

hildren learn by doing, and every child has a unique learning style all his or her own, child development experts tell us. The same can be said of adults if a recent survey is any indication. A majority of Americans say hands-on training is the hands-down winner when they want to learn something new in an educational environment, according a Harris Interactive poll conducted on behalf of Everest College.

Surprising in the Internet age when most Americans spend hours a day online, 52 percent of the 1,011 adults polled said active participation through hands-on training was the best learning method, while just 19 percent counted using the Internet as a preferred learning tool. Watching a demonstration by an instructor came in a distant second at 28 percent, and just 15 percent valued watching videos. Other variables play a role in determining an adult’s preferred learning style, the survey indicates. While both sexes preferred hands-on training overall, men were significantly more likely than women to say hands-on training worked best for them. Women were significantly more likely to say visual demonstrations worked best for them.

ome website Houzz polled users and asked what bathroom upgrades they most desired. Many of the answers were both luxurious and affordable (like skylights and double-flush toilets). Others were downright easy, such as towel warmers and foot rests in the shower.

Many Houzz respondents said they would like a skylight in their bathroom. They’re definitely on to something. In rooms where privacy is a concern, skylights can provide both natural light and ventilation without exposing your personal business to the neighbors. They’re both beautiful - endowing bathrooms with a major, “wow” factor - and practical; Energy Star-qualified noleak, solar-powered fresh-air skylights from Velux America can help trim electricity costs by providing natural light and passively venting moist, warm air from the room. Install solarpowered skylights and blinds, and the cost of the products, as well as the installation, can qualify for a 30 percent federal tax credit. And for 10 weeks during the summer there’s also a $200 cash rebate from Velux on solar skylights. You can create a big impact for a small price with a makeover that only takes a couple of days. FIND THE RIGHT TOOLS TO INVEST IN A HEALTHY SMILE f you’re concerned about your oral health and looking to protect your physical and IAttending financial well-being, one of the easiest ways to do so is to practice preventive care. bi-annual dental checkups and making smart oral health decisions can help you spot a concern well before it becomes an expensive problem. Despite the obvious benefits of adhering to preventive care, many people forget this simple routine and risk bigger expenses down the road. Here are some easy tips you can follow to invest in a healthy smile and protect your oral health. * Get serious about flossing. Daily flossing is one of the most important things you can do to improve your oral health. Floss helps to get down into the crevices between the teeth. This is where plaque resides. Daily flossing helps you remove this plaque before it turns into tartar. * Find the toothbrush that’s right for you. As the main tool for scrubbing and brushing away unwanted plaque, the toothbrush tends to do the heavy lifting. Most dentists today recommend using an electric toothbrush. This allows you to give your teeth a better cleaning in less time, and it ensures you are brushing with the appropriate pressure. * What’s your toothpaste of choice? With so many kinds of toothpaste, personal preference plays a big factor. Toothpastes vary by flavor, whitening power and other additional features, so it really comes down to your brushing goals. Whichever brand you select, make sure the box has the American Dental Association (ADA) stamp. This way you’ll know your toothpaste has been regulated and tested. * Don’t forget the mouthwash. People tend to forget about this important last step in a mouth cleansing routine, but a recent Good Housekeeping study found that “More than 9 out of 10 respondents who are not currently mouth rinse users (93 percent) said they would use it if it could help improve their dental visits.” Look for a mouthwash like the new Crest Pro-Health Tartar Protection rinse. This rinse does more than just provide anti-tartar and anti-cavity benefits, it also helps to freshen breath, fights unwanted surface stains and strengthens weakened enamel. * Your smile is affected by what you eat. There are many products on the market that that can help you whiten your smile, but you can also improve your pearly whites by making the right food choices. Eating strawberries, broccoli, apples and cauliflower, or drinking water and dairy products help to whiten your smile. Meanwhile, you should avoid drinking red wine, tea, coffee and cola, as these drinks can stain your teeth. Maintaining good oral health doesn’t have to be hard. With the right tools and an established daily routine, you can ensure your minor oral health concerns don’t lead to major dentist bills in the future. DOES YOUR INSURANCE POLICY COVER STORM DAMAGE?

I

f being hit by a hurricane is considered an “act of God”, should being spared from the devastating results of a hurricane also be considered an act of God? We all recently dodged the Hurricane Arthur. And while many of us prepared for the worse, we mostly focused on supplies and physical protections. Perhaps it is a good time to review the insurance protections we have on our homes before the next storm comes along. Not all homeowner’s insurance policies are the same. Whether certain storm damage is covered by your homeowners insurance depends on what policy you have. While most policies do cover some level of storm damage, policies do vary greatly with different levels of coverage, exclusions and limits of liability. It is important to note that most standard homeowner’s insurance policies DO NOT provide coverage for flood damage. Typically, any surface water (ie, water on the ground) be it from flood, rain, or any water source, that enters through the foundation walls of a building is not covered by any homeowner’s policy. Water that comes in over the threshold of

the exterior door, through cracks in the walls, SEND YOUR CHILD OF through windows below ground level (in TO COLLEGE WITH wells), etc., is generally only covered under PEACE OF MIND flood insurance. In some cases, any water damage in subterranean parts of the home By Teresa M. Clemons will not be covered. You do not have to be in a “flood plain” to seriously consider flood insurance. Most homes in flood zones are required to have flood insurance. But living anywhere on the peninsulas puts all of us in a modicum of danger. Just the rain storms in this area often are immediate torrential downpours that will make any backyard a swimming pool. It is a good time now to check with your local insurance agent to know what water damage is covered by your policy, and take action before Bertha, Crystobal or Dolly pay us a visit. And for all of your unfortunate property damage incidents, you can rely on the disaster restoration professionals at PuroClean for a fast emergency response. . O

ne of the best presents you can buy for your child (and yourself ) when your child turns 18 is what we refer to as a “College Power Pack.” It includes three (3) very important documents: a durable power of attorney, a medical power of attorney, and a HIPPA release. What are these documents and what will they do for you and your child? • DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY Allows you to manage your child’s legal and financial affairs should he/she need assistance. Even if you are paying the bills, you cannot access personal account information without the child’s consent. For college students, the Power of Attorney will also enable you to access their personal information (i.e. grades) through the school registrar. • MEDICAL POWER OF ATTORNEY – In case of an accident or incapacity, the Medical Power of Attorney protects your child by giving you the authority to make health care decisions for him or her and ensures your right to step in if needed. • HIPPA RELEASE – Gives your child’s doctor permission to discuss and release private medical information to you. Remember, just because you are paying the bills, you do not have the legal right to any legal, financial, or health care information pertaining to your adult child. We routinely refer to these three documents as a “College Power Pack” when preparing them for young adults, but these documents are important for any young person, whether or not he is in college. If you have children or grandchildren who are over the age of 18, they should have these three documents in place. If you are interested in discussing further how these documents can help you protect your own child or grandchild, please contact us at The Peninsula Center, 757.969.1900. Our office is located at 263 McLaws Circle (Atrium Building), Suite 104, Williamsburg, VA 23185.

HOME ORGANIZATION STARTS WITH THE RIGHT TOOLS HOW TO GET EVERYONE ON THE SAME PAGE

Y

our closets may be a bastion of neatness and your pantry a model of the philosophy “a place for everything and everything in its place.” Still, no home is truly in order if the people who live in it are disorganized. “Perfectly organized storage throughout your home is a beautiful thing, but it’s all for nothing if your family can’t keep track of their own and each other’s schedules,” says designer and stylist Emily Henderson, a blogger and spokesperson for the Home Collection by Post-it Brand, Scotch Brand and Command Brand. “Today, families are constantly busy so it’s important to find organization tactics and tools that work for everyone.” To organize your family, Henderson suggests turning the heart of your home - the kitchen - into its command center. Make your kitchen both the storage and display location for items that help you plan meals, make schedules, remind you of important appointments and bring a smile to your day. Ideas for organizing documents and accessories Menus, receipts, schoolwork that requires parents’ signatures, tickets for upcoming events - the average family juggles a lot of paperwork, even in today’s increasingly digital world. It’s important to keep documents organized and in sight in a central location and in a way that works for everyone. Consider these tricks for keeping documents in order: • Take-out menus often get stuffed in a drawer or scattered around the house. Pull yours together in one spot by mounting clear plastic pockets on the inside of cabinet doors. Post-it View and Go Pockets make it easy to keep menus in one place. • Items that your family uses daily (bus passes, gas cards, etc.) can be stored in plain sight on the refrigerator using sturdy magnetic clips. Consider designating one side of the fridge for such items so everyone will know where to look when they need access to them. • Keep items you need for quick reference or that require action in sight. The Post-it Grip Board gets important papers off the counter or out of drawers or book bags and into full view and includes a spot to jot notes.

Home Collection from 3M

• How often do you need a pen, pencil, scissors or tape and find yourself reduced to rummaging through the kitchen junk drawer to find what you want? Place essential planning and scheduling accessories in clear caddies that can easily mount on any smooth surface. The Command Clear Caddies adhere to a variety of surfaces, including walls, wood, tile, metal and more, without damaging walls with nails, screws, tacks or permanent adhesive. Place one in the kitchen near your planning calendar to store pens, pencils, tape, Post-it Notes and more.

For the love of your family When your child brings home a new masterpiece or a great grade, you want to display it for everyone to see. Rather than damage walls and that precious paperwork with tacks or tape, try displaying artwork, photos, school schedules and projects in a Scotch Display Frame. Two sizes can accommodate items either 4-by-6 inches or 8 1/2 by 11, and they mount easily with removable Scotch mounting squares.

Scheduling solutions Menu planning and coordinating schedules - from Mom’s business trips to junior’s tae kwan do tournaments - can be a challenge for busy families. To avoid scheduling conflicts, missed appointments and meal-making confusion, try these scheduling tips: • Place a dry erase planner on your refrigerator or in a key location in the kitchen. Encourage family members to jot important appointments on the weekly planner so everyone is aware of family schedules.

• For menu planning, look for a planning pad that provides room for menu ideas and shopping lists. Hang the pad in a central location in the kitchen, so that when you go grocery shopping, you just tear off the list portion and go. • To facilitate grocery-list making, when you put items away - in the pantry, cupboard or freezer - attach a Post-it Full Adhesive Note to the second-to-last item in the pack or stack, and note the item name and the words “buy more” on the note. Whoever takes that penultimate item simply makes note on the family planner and list pad so Mom or Dad will know to purchase more of that item. AUGUST 2014 RENEW
