How To Celebrate The Holidays For Less
(StatePoint)
T
he delights of the holiday season can add up quickly. From cooking and baking to shopping for the perfect gift, the season can take its toll on your wallet.
With some smart planning, you can enjoy everything the holidays have to offer without breaking your budget, say the discount experts at Dollar General, who are providing some shrewd tips to help keep costs down. Deck the Halls The holidays are marked by festive decorations. This year, consider a new theme or try your hand at DIY decorations. Create a rustic holiday feel with mason jars, fresh greenery and candles. Or for a more formal look, go chic with gold bulbs, white accents and burlap. Experiment with different materials and ornaments to create a one-of-a-kind, inexpensive Photo Courtesy of VHHA display for your home. Great Gifts Gifts for friends and family can get expensive. Save money with DIY ideas. Try making a homemade soup mix in a jar. Purchase canning jars and fill them with soup ingredients like beans, spices and pasta. Discount retailers like Dollar General carry a variety of supplies and delicious ingredients to make any DIY gift tasty. Finish the jar with a ribbon and use the gift tag to include cooking instructions on the back. (c) Catherine Murray - Fotolia.com
For the person who has everything, pick up a gift card to his or her favorite restaurant or store. Attach a bow or ornament to give it a seasonal touch. Or, consider giving the gift of time. Gather friends together for a baking day or cookie swap.
Classic Recipes One of the most iconic aspects of the holidays is the food. Baked treats, rich casseroles, roasted meats and holiday candy are all wonderful enjoyments of the season. And the more you prepare yourself, the more you save. This year, try new recipes and have fun with unique ideas. Check out delicious and easy dishes for your holiday gatherings at dollargeneral.com/easy-meals. Display your spread on a beautiful tablescape with a decorative wreath as the centerpiece. Add a holiday table cloth, holiday bulbs and decorative LED lights to give family and friends a warm and festive place to share meals.

Here are December’s Ask Dr. J. questions from some dedicated RENEW readers:
ASK
DR. J JANICE UNDERWOOD
Teresa: My 12-year old granddaughter was injured at school. The school nurse called my daughter, (my granddaughter’s mother) to let her know that a desk struck my granddaughter; but that she was okay…that it was just a bruise. My granddaughter shared the alleged details of the incident, but it is not really clear what happened. Here is her story: There was a substitute teacher who had to discipline another child in class. The other child got shoved into the desk and the desk hit my granddaughter or the substitute shoved the desk and my granddaughter was hit.
Either way, I believe there should be an immediate investigation. I am livid that this is happening to my granddaughter, but also that the school is not taking it seriously. What do you think? Dr. Underwood: Teresa, I am so sorry this happened to your granddaughter, and I hope you take the necessary steps to gain the peace of mind that this will not happen again. School violence and bullying are real issues in all schools. It is probably one of the top concerns parents have when sending their children to school because when anyone sends their children out the door in the morning, we all expect they will be well cared for and return better than when they left home. I realize this does nothing to reassure you about your granddaughter. So, I urge you and your daughter to hold the school accountable by Photo requesting a meeting with the Courtesy of Grillo’s Photography school administration and the substitute teacher. Stay in constant contact with all the teachers, the main office, and the principal. Find out more about what happened and why. There sounds like there is so much more to this story. For example, why did this happen in the first place? What was going on in the class? Why couldn’t the substitute handle the discipline issue? Was security called? Did the administration talk to the student witnesses in the classroom at the time? What did they say? Also, you might like to probe into the academic and social make up of the class or request that this particular substitute not be allowed back in the classroom setting. If the administration is not receptive to your requests, schedule a conference with the superintendent. To this point, I always suggest parents address school administrators and teachers with genuine concern as opposed to allowing outrage to dictate the conversation. Open and honest communication is always the key.
e
Jennifer: Dr. J, I am a professional full-time middle school teacher, a mother, a wife, and active in my community and church. I feel like I give everything to my students and family, but there is little left for myself. Sometimes I lay in the bed thinking about all the dreams and goals I have had for myself. I just don’t know how to “get there.” Dr. Underwood: Jennifer, I (and probably many of the women in Hampton Roads) very much identify with everything you mentioned. With that said, I realize teaching is probably one of the most difficult careers there is...I know how hard you work everyday! So, I also know that when you get home from work, you have to keep some of yourself in reserve for your family. Well, that means at the end of the evening there might be very little steam left for you to take care of yourself or put your desires in action. So, you MUST make yourself a priority. Put yourself at the top of your own “to do list.” You can attack your personal “to do list”like creating a lesson plan. First, analyze what has already been learned. Take a mental inventory of everything you have already accomplished, and celebrate those victories. Secondly, make a list of your top five goals. And don’t worry if your goals are too big or seem out of reach. In fact, the bigger, the better. Next, break down each goal with measurable objectives and assign each objective related activities. So, each goal will require a detailed step by step plan, so that you can break up the large goal into smaller tasks. For example, if you want to go back to school to get your master’s degree, you might create 10-20 smaller steps, like registering for the required entrance exam, submitting the final application, completing each course, and defending your thesis. Jennifer, take control of your destiny and start to visualize your goals coming to pass. I recommend that you connect with your church or another organization to plug into a supportive circle of women or attend a women’s conference to jumpstart your personal revival. Below are resources that may be valuable to you as you think about envisioning your goals and taking care of yourself from head to toe. 1. oing your own home improvement projects is a great way to save money and still get the new look you desire. When you’re working on giving a traditional home a more modern feel, it can be tempting to splurge - but you don’t have to. It is possible to “steal” great looks for a lot less money. HGTV hostess and design expert Sabrina Soto knows how easy and affordable it can be to upgrade your home’s aesthetic.
New cabinets can cost a bundle. They’re one of the most expensive elements in any kitchen renovation, but you don’t have to completely replace yours to get a modern look. First, consider what’s “wrong” about your existing cabinets. Are they dated? Is the hardware dull? Does excessive door trim make them look like something from a bygone era? Removing excess ornamentation, repainting or refinishing cabinet doors, and swapping out old, dated hardware can give your cabinets a fresh, new face at a very low cost.
room may be too ‘80s to go with the sleek modern furniture you just bought. Updating your walls with a color palette that is crisp and clean can help evoke a more modern look throughout your home. Don’t overlook the ceiling and trim when you’re repainting. Doing trim and ceilings in hues that contrast with wall colors is a hot trend in modern interior design. When it comes to home improvement, a few smart choices can make it look like you spared no expense to achieve your modern design - and leave you satisfied that you got a “steal” instead.
3. Update walls The walls are the largest design space in any home, and they have a significant impact on a home’s overall aesthetic. Are your wall colors in conflict with a modern design theme? That soft butter yellow you painted the kitchen a few years ago may not fit with the new modern look you want to create this year. The rich burgundy in the dining
“Modern decor often comes at a high price, but you don’t have to dig deep in your pockets to bring a modern feel to your home,” says Soto. “Simple, small projects like switching out old doorknobs to modern door levers will have a big impact on your space without breaking the bank.” Here are three home improvement projects you can do yourself to achieve a modern look on a modest budget: 1. Door handles Door handles impact a home’s overall appearance as well as its functionality. In fact, more than half of homeowners say they notice the door hardware in other people’s homes, according to a recent study by Kwikset. Outdated doorknobs can drag down the style of your home. Switching them out for modern door levers is an easy afternoon project that will have a big impact on the aesthetic of your home. Replace old door hardware with one of the new Kwikset Signature Series contemporary levers. Durable, stylish and with a range of functions and finishes for less than $50, the levers are perfect for all your security needs. Different Women. Different Opinions. Great Conversations! L-R: Amber B. Love, Ana Vergara, Jezlan Moyet, Sheryl Bender, Madison Gray On the set of EveryWay Woman
T
wo women searching for a format that discussed issues that impacted their daily lives created Every Way Woman talk show. Madison and Yolando wanted women that look like them and understood what it was like to make sacrifices for their families. Women who were juggling school, careers, and family and finding a little “me” time for themselves. The information needed to be in one spot. The issues had to be real and the co-hosts had to be different from the hosts already on television. Our format of a five panel co-hosts isn’t new, but Every Way Woman concept of celebrating every day people, not celebrities, is. Every Way Woman values diversity and authenticity. Our hosts’ backgrounds include Indian/Pakistani, Native American, Latina, African American, Korean and more. The show provides women and men a place to come together to listen and be heard, to talk about their hopes and concerns, to discuss not only the important events that affect them, but to promote their own ideas and entrepreneurial dreams. Madison Gray and Yolando Mitchell Brown Co-Creators of EveryWay Woman
Our segments are exciting, interactive and dig a little deeper than the standard conversations on television. For example, while most shows might give one interview on breast cancer, relegated to only Breast Cancer Awareness Month, our show partnered with Breastlink, a one-stop shop for breast cancer patients to see doctors across the specialties they will need to diagnose, treat and restore the breast to do a series of segments that would give viewers all the information they would need to research options.
Every Way Woman is about community. In conjunction with our website, EveryWayWoman.com, we have created a movement of like-minded people, breaking out of their mold to follow their passions and helping each other along the way. A talk show is supposed to be fun, exciting, and entertaining, but it can also be inspiring, motivational, educational and life changing and that’s the concept behind Every Way Woman. There will be segments highlighting viewers’ passions, struggles, and dream. We’ll also feature stories of individuals beating incredible odds of survival that will leave viewers saying, “If she can do it, then so can I”. Every Way Woman focuses on providing the necessary information and solutions viewers need to succeed in their lives and become fulfilled. With a wave of celebrity-driven talks shows, viewers find a void of shows with topics relevant to the lives of everyday people, with hosts with whom they can relate. Our five co-hosts are not celebrities. In fact, many of the greatest talk show hosts, from Donahue, Oprah to Dr. Phil and most of the original members of The View didn’t start out as celebrities and the shows weren’t just about interviewing celebrities on press tours.

ather than worry about the hassle of hosting this holiday season, prepare for visitors and entertaining with these tips and tricks.
Get a Fresh Start
Seemingly daunting tasks can be fun if you’re strategic and give yourself time to do them right. When it comes to shopping for your main course, avoid weekend crowds. The day of your event, set the table in the morning so that unforeseen events or last minute stops won’t throw you off course.
Chances are you’ll need some last-minute gifts for unannounced guests. Stock up on a few items with universal appeal. Jars of locally made preserves, decorative candles, wrapped soaps or bottles of wine are good to have on hand to make everyone feel welcome this holiday season. ‘Tis the season to be festive, not frazzled. Keep guests -- and yourself -- happy with simple tips and tricks, and have time to relax and enjoy your get-together.
Trying to prepare everything at the last minute when guests are knocking at your door creates unwanted stress. Instead, clean and prep the house a few days in advance. Quickly turn chores to checks on your to-do list. For example, use a dab of glue to fix the pesky towel rod in the powder room that keeps coming loose, or to repair broken handles on drawers and cabinets. While you’re making home improvements here and there, get organized for holiday guests by relocating your own coats from the hall closets, leaving room for your visitors’ winter gear. If your guests are bringing appetizers or cocktails, clean out the fridge in advance to have ample storage space. Don‚’t Buy It, DIY It Tired of hanging the same wreath on your door year after year? Create a new, modern focal point that can be used for multiple occasions. Spray paint a wooden wreath form and mini clothespins silver and gold. Once dry, adhere the clothespins to the wreath form in varying layers. Use an adhesive that dries instantly and won’t leave you with messy glue gun strands, such as Krazy Glue’s Maximum Bond No-Run Gel, which will give you time to decorate the rest of your home, rather than cleaning up your crafting space. “Tiffany? Who’s she?” Hazel laughed. “Not a she, my dear, a what. You’ve never heard of Tiffany lamps?” Nancy tapped her mouth with one finger, eyes scrunched. “No, I don’t think so.” “Louis Comfort Tiffany was one the most famous stain glass artists at the turn of the century.” She paused to examine her friend. Who hadn’t heard of Tiffany glass works? But no, there was no recognition in the wide eyes. “He even helped redecorate several rooms in the White House for Chester Author.” Still no recognition. “You know, the twenty-first president.” Nancy nodded. “Okay, well he made his own glass and designed stained-glass Part 2 windows and eventually lamps. Well, he didn’t really design all the lamps, but anyway, his company produced hand made, one-of-a-kind lamps. They sell for thousands of dollars.” Nancy’s mouth dropped open. “But, it’s just a table lamp.” “A unique, famous lamp. My guess is yours is one that’s been missing for decades. That makes it even more valuable. Probably not worth two million like one lamp sold for–” “Million?” “Yeah. But that was the most expensive Tiffany lamp originally.” She had to get Nancy to refocus. Clues. They needed at least some tentative theories or leads as to who would have know the value of the item taken. She scanned the room again. Someone who obviously knew nothing of other valuable things. “Now, you noticed the lamp missing this morning. Are you sure it was here yesterday?” Nancy scrunched her nose and eyes again. “I think so. I come in here to have my quiet time every morning. I don’t usually examine the room to make sure everything’s here. I only noticed today because the phone rang while I was in here. The lamp sat on the same table as the telephone.” Hazel smiled at the large object with a rotary dial. She didn’t miss using the ancient style of the device, but her heart tugged anyway. “Okay. So at least since last night. When’s the last time you used this phone.” Nancy relaxed against the high backed chair. “Sunday. I was in here playing cards with some friends after church when Billy Cooper called to ask me if I was going to be at the prayer meeting Monday night. I think he’s sweet on me. But this old widow has been by herself for fifteen years and I’m quite content not having to answer to anybody else.” She winked at Hazel. “But I don’t mind sitting next to him at prayer meeting.” “Sunday afternoon. Today’s Tuesday. So sometime in that thirty-six hours. I say ‘weapon’ because as worship dancers our instruments are also weapons of war, especially designed to stir up the atmosphere, to confuse the enemy and bring breakthrough with every move. At the core of our ministry is the understanding that we live to worship, and we worship to live. We seek first and foremost to have hearts surrendered before His presence so One of our team’s most that He may distinguishable feature is manifest in the use of tambourines everything as the core instrument that we do in our dance. asis of Life Dance began several years ago as part of the vision of our mentors Pastor Saurissha Maldonado and Pastor Esther Torres. We began with a small but passionate group of girls just yearning to bring a new and extravagant worship to the Lord. The fire in our group was contagious, our congregation began to be impacted by our worship and to the glory and honor of God, our group grew in numbers way beyond our expectation. Three of the original group members, Lumar Badillo-Burgos and Ministers Shaimalys Soto and Lenny Vasquez, now serve as team leaders under the covering of the Director of Dance, Pastor Esther Torres.

intimate connection to the Father, and that’s what keeps us going--a desire to live in His presence and bring others into that place of worship. God has been nothing short of amazing to our team! In the years that Oasis of Life Dance has been active, we have had the honor of ministering in many congregations in Virginia, particularly in Charlottesville and the Hampton Roads area, as well as participating in events in Florida, North Carolina and New York. We also held our first Dance Workshop, in collaboration with other dance ministers in our city, to instruct worshippers in tambourine routines, dance technique and the fundamentals of worship dance. We can truly say that we have seen the hand of God over our individual lives and the collective of our team as He continues to make good on the promise that He made to us: that we would multiply and reach the nations with a Lumar Badillo Burgos dance of breakthrough, revival and restoration. SIMPLE STEPS TO GORGEOUS HOLIDAY HAIR AND MAKEUP
Y
ou’re donning a cute cozy sweater, you’ve decked the halls at home and now it’s time to dazzle with beautiful holiday hair and makeup.
EcoTools Beauty Team members and expert stylists Christine Symonds and Teni Panosian have created a complete holiday hair and makeup look that, with just a few simple steps, will have your style merry and bright for any event. Holiday makeup: classic and flawless
(BPT)
“This time of year there’s certainly no shortage of seasonal celebrations, and a classic makeup look is always a crowd pleaser,” says Panosian, YouTube beauty star and voice behind MissMaven.com. “Using tools from the three limited-edition EcoTools holiday sets, it’s easy to achieve a flawless, festive look.”
Step 1. Using the Skin Perfecting Brush from the Four-Piece Beautiful Complexion Set, apply your favorite foundation. Step 2. Taking the Precision Foundation Brush from the Festive & Flawless Face Set, apply concealer under your eyes and around your mouth. Also dab a little bit into the center of your forehead to brighten and conceal. Step 3. Also from the Festive & Flawless Face Set, take the Buffing Concealer Brush and blend the concealer using small, circular motions for an even and flawless base. Step 4. Going back to the Four-Piece Beautiful Complexion Set, grab the Mattifying Finish Brush and a matte bronzer to give your skin a bit of warmth. Apply the bronzer into the hollows of your cheeks, along your jawline and into your hairline. Step 5. Using the same brush, sweep a soft, neutral pink blush onto your cheeks for a natural, rosy look. Then, set your makeup by applying a translucent powder using the Full Powder Brush from the Festive & Flawless Face Set. Step 6. To add a healthy glow, take the Complexion Blending Brush from the same Festive & Flawless Face Set and dab on your favorite powder highlighter to the high points of your cheekbones, your brow bone, and above the arches of your eyebrows. Step 7. For the eyes, take the Angled Eyeliner Brush from the Mini Essentials Holiday Set and begin applying a black gel eyeliner at the inner corner of your eye, slowly working your way to the outer corner. At the outer corner, create a wing of your desired thickness and fill it in. Step 8. To complete the eyes, apply a few coats of your favorite mascara to both the top and bottom lashes. Step 9. Moving on to the lips, apply a bright red matte lip color. Beauty tip: To clean up the edges of your lipstick, use a concealer brush to apply a tiny amount of concealer at the edge of your lips, creating a clean, crisp edge. Then blend the concealer outward and you’re done! Holiday headband twist “A simple go-to hairstyle with a touch of pizazz is ideal for any holiday gathering,” says celebrity hair stylist Symonds. “This headband twist offers a hint of sparkle that you’ll want to wear all season long.” Step 1. Comb through dry, clean hair or second-day hair with the Styler + Smoother Hair Brush to smooth out any tangles. Step 2. Taking a section of hair at the crown of the head, lightly backcomb downward to create volume. Repeat this again a few times, grabbing more hair as you go. When the desired volume is reached, gently smooth out the top without disrupting the volume you just created. Step 3. Place your headband (hello, sparkles!) at the desired position on your head, on top of all of your hair. Then, secure it at the nape of the neck with a few bobby pins. Step 4. One at a time, take the two side sections in front of each ear and lightly twist them back and into the headband. The elasticity of the headband will hold them in place. Step 5. Now that all of your hair is set back, split it into two sections and loosely braid each one. Doing this creates texture and control for when you twist them back into the base of the headband. Secure each braid with a clear elastic. Step 6. Go back in with your fingers and pull each braid apart slightly to create a fuller, more “undone” look. Then, take one of the braids and weave it through the back side of the headband, leave the ends hanging down. Repeat on the other side. Step 7. Tuck both ends into the loop to hide them and secure with bobby pins. Step 8. Spray your entire head with a medium-hold hairspray and you’re ready to party all night! Give Yourself the Best Gift Ever! Tatrece Dunlap Swann
W
e often hear it said every year as the Holidays approach, that it is better to give than to receive. I share the same sentiment on the idea of gift giving, but not like you may think. The essence of gift giving is a heart issue, but somehow it has become a yearly obligatory routine that has lead many people into financial situations that they can’t afford, only to find themselves further into debt. It’s time to make some changes in how we spend this Holiday season. Thanksgiving and Christmas begin what we traditionally call the holidays. It’s the time we spend with our loved ones and friends giving thanks for our many blessings. It’s also a time to assess the year as we anticipate the new. The Christmas holiday has become a commercialized marketing engine that runs simultaneously with Halloween and Thanksgiving, and as retailers compete for our consumer dollars, we have to pause and remember what’s most important - family. This Holiday season, give the best gift ever - time! Commit to spending your time with loved ones and friends creating new traditions and sharing new experiences. Don’t allow your holidays to be consumed with spending, and your time chasing the next best sale. Instead, commit your time to creating a plan for 2016 to eliminate the debt of 2015. Commit to taking the time to honestly assess 2015 before approaching 2016. What did you plan for and accomplish this year? Where did you miss the mark? In January of this year, I challenged you to create a list of things to accomplish in 2015. How did you do? I committed to training for and running a 10K race this year, and I’m proud to say that I completed the Richmond Ukrop’s Monument Avenue 10k race in March of this year. It was one of the most challenging, yet rewarding things I’ve ever set out to accomplish, but I did it. What a huge accomplishment! Some of my planned goals for 2016 are set. I’ll train for and run another race, and I’ll enter an institution of higher learning for either personal or professional development. What about you? How will you end 2015? What are your goals for 2016? Finish the year strong, and begin 2016 even better. I encourage you to make it the best Holiday ever! Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!
