Summer Vacation T

he school year has come to an end and summer has officially begun! Routines take on a much slower pace, and some of the things we can look forward to during the vacation are a much needed break, but also fun times where we commemorate special family celebrations like High School and College graduations and Father’s Day. Summer also causes parents to answer the dreaded question: “What sorts of fun, yet safe activities will the kids be engaged in?”

As a child growing up, I recall summers of band and day camps, Vacation Bible School, going to the movies and hanging out at the mall with friends. For our family, the summer means spending time with the family and friends we don’t often have an opportunity to see during the busy and hectic school year. It also means reading a good book…. yes reading! Everyone selects a summer reading, and over the course of the three months, we read and discuss the story lines –make it fun! Statistics show that some teachers, principals, and parents strongly believe that a three-month summer vacation hurts children. The idea that it fragments a child’s education, and causes teachers to spend weeks in the fall just reminding kids of what they forgot over the summer is the subject of much debate. The debate will go on, but until it’s resolved, have fun this summer making lasting memories, but don’t forget to keep their minds stimulated with a good ole fashion book!

FUN IN THE SUN You finally get perfect weekend weather. Weather perfect for being on the water! If you already own a boat, you know the drill – check the trailer, check the battery, clean it up from your last trip, and don’t forget you still have to get gas it up. Oh, wait, you also have to make sure the life jackets and safety gear is ready too. Of course, you’ll definitely remember the sunscreen, right? Sometimes there’s so much to do to get ready to go, it leaves less time to enjoy boating!

when you return, you just toss ‘em the keys!

But what if you didn’t have the “getting ready” aspects of boating or even the ownership pitfalls and risks of boating? What if you could leave the house this weekend and just show up to find your boat already cleaned, fueled, warmed up, all safety equipment in place, and waiting for you? If your family was a member of the Carefree Boat Club, you would use their online reservation system to schedule your boat, show up, and enjoy all the James & Chickahominy rivers have to offer – cruising, exploring, sightseeing, skiing, fishing, and much more. It’s all about quality time and boating provides that better than any other activity. Imagine enjoying the best parts of boating and leaving the rest to the Carefree staff. It’s simple - you simply reserve whatever boat you’re in the mood for because you have seven boats to choose from in Williamsburg and

Bryan Courtney, owner/operator of Carefree Boat Club of Williamsburg along with his staff maintains the variety of boats ranging from family bowriders to pontoon boats to a large cruiser. You know what they say – Variety is the Spice of Life! See his boats at www.CarefreeBoats.com/Williamsburg/Boats or better yet, schedule a visit.

Is that incredible or what? At Carefree Boat Club of Williamsburg, you have unlimited access to their fleet of well-maintained boats and you don’t have to worry about insurance, maintenance, taxes or even storage. If that’s not enough, there are more than 28 Carefree locations for members to visit along the East and South Coasts. It’s like having a boat where you travel without having to trailer it there. That’s awesome!

From Richmond to Yorktown, members of the Carefree Williamsburg club are already enjoying the many benefits of their membership. They tell us they love the service and the courteous staff at the club. In fact, the Williamsburg location received the “Membership Excellence” award from Carefree corporate in Feb 2013. It is given to recognize market impact, member retention, excellent customer service, and community involvement. Carefree Boat Club Williamsburg Members, L-R Betty Bongiovi, Cindy Frezek Cindy Frezek, a Carefree member since 2003 said, “I and Cindy Colley

owned a boat for 40 years, now all I have to do is reserve a boat and bring my skis.” “The Chickahominy River is the only place I ski, I just wish there were more skiers.” Cindy has been skiing for 58 years and loves being on the water - but without the headaches of maintaining a boat. Betty Bongiovi, a member since 2010 says “The reason we joined was we just pick up the keys and go! The name says it

all! This is truly “carefree” boating! We love the variety of boats available. Best of all, our grand kids think we are the greatest!”

“I would like to say that the boat club is a great way for my husband to get his boating fix without the strain on a marriage, NO maintenance time or money. The old saying always said that the happiest two days in a man’s life is the day he gets his boat and the day he gets rid of his boat.... By being a member of Carefree Boat Club, my husband can stay happy and so can Cindy.” ...Cindy Colley, member since 2011. Boat availability is ensured by maintaining a strict ratio of members to boats and a balance of different membership levels. To schedule a tour and discover the joys of “Boating without Owning” by becoming a member in the Carefree Boat Club Williamsburg, just call Bryan at 866-630-5959 or email him at Williamsburg@CarefreeBoats.com. All membership levels include comprehensive “Boat Virginia” safety training plus individual On Water instruction at no additional cost! The club organizes and hosts various social events and group outings throughout the season. Their Annual Floating Fireworks outing is enthusiastically anticipated each year. They take as many boats as needed and as many members as possible out to the mouth of the Chickahominy, raft boats together, share snacks & drinks, enjoy fellowship, and watch the Two Rivers fireworks display off Barrett’s Point. You just need to get involved…you can choose from a few different membership options from unlimited use for around $300/ month to plans designed for the infrequent user like their Social & Seasonal trial options. Bryan will even customize a membership to your specific needs if needed. Your family could be on the water in as little as 5 to 10 days of joining. You owe it to yourself to at least check it out. Tell a Friend too.

Dispelling Myths About Root Canals Kalisha Jordan, DDS, MSD

“Barrett, I’ve really got to go.” Jen stifled a yawn. “Tomorrow’s a work day.” He laughed. “Today was a work day, too. So was

“I’d rather have a root canal than (something I really don’t want to do)!” It’s a common cliché. It’s also a statement that doesn’t accurately reflect modern root canal treatment. yesterday.” Root canals’ stress-inducing reputation took hold several decades ago, when root canal treatment really was painful. Today, it’s reputation remains unchanged, even though the procedure itself has changed. A survey conducted by the American Association of Endodontists showed that patients who’ve had a root canal performed by an endodontist are six times more likely to describe it as “painless” than those people who have not had root canal treatment. “More than half the patients referred to our offices come to us in pain, and a big part of what we do is get people out of pain,” said Sandra Madison, D.D.S., M.S., president of the AAE. “Endodontists are extensively trained to diagnose and treat oral pain, and we have expertise in performing dental procedures in a way that eases patients’ fears and helps them avoid pain before, during and after a procedure.”

She curled her knees up and hugged the phone between her right ear and shoulder. “That’s why I’m so tired. How in the world Part 22 can you get up for work every morning and keep me talking so late?” “Sleep’s optional. It’s not like you can make it up or anything. Your body just adjusts.” “My body is not adjusting.” She covered her mouth as her brain sought extra oxygen. “And if I fall asleep sitting at my desk tomorrow and get fired, it’s gonna be your fault.” His howl brought a tired smile to her face. “You won’t get fired. They love you.” “How do you know that?” “I know people.”

“Barrett…” A root canal saves a tooth by removing the pulp-the soft inner tissue containing nerves and blood vessels-that’s been “Okay, okay. My mom’s coworker’s step-sister is married to damaged, usually by deep decay. The endodontist cleans, fills and seals the canals, and the tooth is then restored with a permanent filling or other restoration. Nearly 16 million teeth are saved with root canal procedures each the youth pastor.” “Good grief. Is there anyone you don’t know?” year. “I didn’t know you ‘til recently.”

In addition to the bad reputation root canals suffer regarding pain, there are other myths associated with them that, Jen’s stomach somersaulted. “True.” if corrected, might ease the fear that the procedure needlessly inspires in patients. “Anyway, the word on the street is that you’re a pretty hard For instance, it’s thought erroneously by many that root canals can cause illness. This claim is based on research worker.” performed in the early 1900s, which suggested that bacteria trapped in the teeth during root canal treatment can “On the street, huh? Cliché much?” cause almost any type of disease, including arthritis, heart disease and kidney disease. While bacteria can indeed be “Better than grapevine.” He broke into the song she hadn’t found in the teeth and mouth, their presence does not constitute “infection” and is not necessarily a threat to a heard in at least a decade. person’s health. If fact, other researchers have been unable to duplicate this research over the years, and believe that Jen chuckled. “You’re crazy.” these early findings may have been caused by poor sanitation and imprecise research techniques that were common “It’s why you like me so much.” in that period. Recent studies indicate that teeth receiving proper endodontic treatment do not cause illness. Yeah, that and your thick, curly hair, and deep russet eyes, and solid biceps.

A third myth is that a good alternative to root canal treatment is extraction (pulling the tooth). The reality is that “Jen?” saving your natural teeth when possible, is your best option. In a recent AAE survey, 76 percent of participants said “Uh, yeah?” that they would prefer a root canal to tooth extraction. Artificial teeth can limit your ability to enjoy all the foods “Where’d you go?” The tease in his voice oozed through the you love, but it will save you money. Endodontict treatment, followed by the appropriate restoration ( a crown line. placed over the tooth to make it stronger), is usually less expense than extraction and placement of a bridge or “I fell asleep. I told you I need sleep.” implant, the only alternatives to root canals. “You did not.” “You’re right, I didn’t.” She switched the phone to her left ear.

Even better, root canals have a very high success rate, with many teeth lasting a lifetime. Placement of a bridge or “Thanks for talking with me.” an implant generally requires significantly more time in treatment and may result in further procedures to adjacent “Any time.” teeth and supporting tissue. He meant that. “I hope I haven’t bored you to death or bugged the bejeebers out of you with all my questions.”

The truth is that for people suffering from certain kinds of tooth pain, a root canal is usually a blessing, not a curse. “Of course, not, Jen. I told you. If God can’t be questioned, Kalisha C. Jordan, DDS MSD, is an endodontist and a member of the American Association of Endodontists. Dr. He’s not worthy of faith. Jen’s response stuck in her throat. It wasn’t tears this time, but gratitude. For the first time in her life, she realized she deserved nothing. Every time she’d made a decision only to serve herself. Every ugly word she’d spoken to her parents, even if they hadn’t done much to deserve kindness. Every time she’d snubbed her nose at God. And still He loved her and had not only been waiting for her to return that love, but put people in her path to reveal Himself. She finally convinced Barrett to let her off the line, rolled on her back, and stared at the shimmering slits made by the light sneaking through the blinds. Not only had God given her His love, but He’d also given her Barrett. Could she trust him with her heart?

Yes. She could. A grin turned up the corners of her mouth, she murmured, “Thank you,” and drifted off to sleep.

very hostess wants to create a celebration that is unique, memorable and has a touch of elegance.

It can be difficult to create the perfect party ambiance without breaking the bank. Thanks to beautiful warm weather and fresh, summertime flavors, you won’t need to use chocolate fountains or other lavish extremes to create an inviting atmosphere to impress every guest. Here are some simple, yet, stunning tips to add glamour to your next soiree: • Freshen Up - Celebrate the freshness of the season by stacking apples, strawberries and other fruit favorites on cake platters. Stick baby’s breath and small flowers in between the layers for added flair. • Add Some Glow - Add a little ambiance to nighttime parties by placing tea lights in a large decorative serving bowl or punch bowl. Use a clear or crystal bowl for extra sparkle. • Glam Up Your Cocktails - Summer is all about fruity, delicious cocktails and you don’t have to be a mixologist to serve a glamorous drink. Easy-

to-serve beverages, such as Smirnoff Ice Peach Bellini, can be enjoyed right from the bottle or poured over ice and garnished, making it perfect for outdoor brunches and bridal showers. Also remember to have water and fun, non-alcoholic cocktails available for guests who are driving. • Serve Simply - Build glittering, multi-tiered serving pieces by stacking circular or octagonal mirrors with glass candle holders in between. The materials for these fancy servers are affordably priced, but look like they cost a fortune. • Go Green - For a sparkling summer centerpiece, place small green plants, such as succulents or even starter plants in different sizes of clear, glass bubble bowls. Then stack one on top of the other, with the largest bowl on bottom. You’ll add height and charm to the tables and guests will have a green party favor to take home.

• Label Lavishly - Avoid the mix-up of misplaced beverages with drink tags. Create unique tags with various colors of ribbon, twinkling beads and chic baubles to tie around bottles or stemware. For more drink recipes and information on Smirnoff Ice Peach Bellini, visit www.smirnoff.com.

HEALTHY AGING: SIMPLE LIFESTYLE CHANGES IMPROVE QUALITY OF LIFE

By Rosa Hopkins BSN/RN

A

healthy lifestyle begins with small steps and setting achievable goals. Getting started is easier than you might think, even for the elderly. It is never too late for seniors to take control of their health and focus on the positive aspects of aging instead of the myths and negative stereotypes. With the right mindset, seniors can embrace growing older and start on the journey to healthy aging using items found around a typical home. “Living life to the fullest as you age can be challenging, yet exciting. Making an effort to better your health can improve your quality of life greatly,” said Allen Hager, CEO and founder of Right at Home, www.rightathome.net a national provider of in-home care with 165 locations in 41 states. “Awareness and education are important to empowering seniors to age gracefully.” The following household items and activities can act as simple ways for seniors to begin their healthy aging journey. Physical: Before undertaking any type of physical program, seniors should talk to their doctor. There may be activities seniors should avoid due to personal health situations. While sitting in a chair, place both arms out flat in front of you and lift the can up about six inches. Repeat five times. Remember, it’s not a race, start slow and increase your repetitions as you are able. Kitchen timer – Start with five minutes of exercise and increase time as ability warrants. Making slow, steady progress builds a routine and endurance. Glass of water – Among other health benefits, staying hydrated can prevent temporary memory impairment. Try to drink at least six to eight 8ounce glasses of water daily. Healthy snacks and meals – Eat a balanced diet that is rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains and fibers and low in saturated fat, trans fat and cholesterol. Make foods that are flavorful and simple to prepare. If your loved one needs assistance preparing healthy meals or snacks, consider hiring caregivers that for a few hours a week to help with advanced meal and snack preparation.

Overall Well-being: Calendar – Record doctor’s appointments, including preventative care visits. Also keep track of loved ones’ anniversaries and birthdays. Pillow – Getting seven to eight hours of sleep each night is important. Commit to a regular sleep schedule and develop a bedtime ritual, such as listening to soothing music or taking a bath. Telephone – Staying connected with friends and family is good for emotional well-being. There is a higher probability of healthy aging success when there is support and encouragement from a senior’s loved ones. Families and friends can cheer on the seniors in their lives by giving them a “Healthy Aging” basket that includes some of the items listed above. ou’ve made the decision to remodel your home. The budget range and project scope have been set, but now you aren’t sure how to begin this new adventure.

Following a few simple guidelines and tips can simplify the process of turning your vision into a ravishing remodel. Set the Style Scene Many homeowners know exactly where their preferences fall on the style spectrum, while others have no idea. As a first step, identify your personal style before moving forward with any steps of the remodel. There are even websites that offer a style quiz to help you determine where your style falls.

Even if you think you know what you want for a space, develop a mood board to help you visualize your design style. A mood board will ensure that others, such as professionals or family members, understand your vision. Gather items on your board such as colors, patterns and images that make you feel good. You (and a designer) can make sense and draw meaning from it later. There are some great resources online for developing these boards. Pinterest, a tool that enables users to “pin” their favorite items, is extremely useful for finding ideas and forming a vision. Start by following leading home products companies, such as KraftMaid Cabinetry, on Pinterest to help collect inspirational images. Turn Dreams into Design Once you are in tune with your style, engage a

“One of the biggest advantages to working with a designer on a home project is that they really understand functionality, while accomplishing your desired style,” says Sarah Reep, director of designer relations and education at KraftMaid Cabinetry. “By telling a designer the details of your lifestyle and gripes about your current layout, they can turn out a well-designed space that will fit all of your needs.” Working with professionals doesn’t have to break the bank and can actually save you time, money and provide peace of mind in the long run. Avoid costly mistakes and ensure that the professionals you hire are fully certified and qualified for the task. Great kitchens and baths start with great design. At the end of the day, you’ll be thankful for the time spent during the dreaming and designing phases of your remodel. These steps will help bring your dream to life, just the way you imagined it. How many times have you painted a room only to discover you don’t like the color. How many pieces of furniture have you purchased that you had to replace soon after either because it didn’t fit the room in size, style or scale or worse yet the quality was poor and it wore out way too fast. An interior designer is quite affordable! Interior designers can purchase directly from the manufacturer. You can usually purchase furniture through a designer for less than what it would cost you to purchase at a retail location. As a rule, designers also carry high quality items that will last longer. Professional window treatments are designed according to your exact taste and window measurements. The look of custom measured window coverings cannot compare with trying to “make it fit” when purchased from a store with standard only sizing.

DULL, BRITTLE LOCKS? FOLLOW THE 4 EXPERT RULES FOR STRONG, BEAUTIFUL HAIR (BPT)

or years, women have been working at the ends of hair, rather than the foundation the scalp. Now, it is time to start working at the right end of hair.

Ninety-nine percent of hair’s natural strength and beauty comes from the scalp, CLEAR Scalp& Hair Beauty Therapy reports. A wellnourished scalp is the right foundation for strong, beautiful hair. To help women commit to working at the right

end of hair, CLEAR Scalp-& Hair Therapy experts Dr. Francesca Fusco, a leading New York City dermatologist, and celebrity stylist Jen Atkin, are sharing their secrets to strong, beautiful hair. Rule No. 1 - Care for your scalp like your skin:

Dr. Fusco’s advice is to give the scalp the TLC it needs, just like you would the skin on your face. This will create the right foundation for strong, beautiful hair. “Rule No.1 is to wear a hat when outdoors to protect the scalp and hair from UV damage,” she says. Rule No. 2 - Exfoliate: Dr. Fusco recommends exfoliating the scalp by shampooing regularly. “It is important to shampoo regularly to prevent product buildup and dulling dead cells on the scalp and hair,” says Dr. Fusco. Regular shampooing also allows for efficient absorption of conditioners. Rule No. 3 Moisturize: It’s essential to moisturize and nourish the scalp to create the right foundation for strong, beautiful hair. The optimal time to moisturize is immediately after shampooing. “While the line of CLEAR shampoos are formulated to feed scalp, regular shampooing also helps to cleanse and remove product buildup. This allows the conditioning product to absorb efficiently and deliver the beneficial ingredients to the hair,” says Dr. Fusco. Rule No. 4 - Treat your strong, beautiful hair: Atkin defines strong, beautiful hair as strands that have shine and body, and don’t easily break when combing. For stronger, more beautiful hair, she

advises her clients to use a nourishing treatment at least once a week. “All women can benefit from using the CLEAR Damage-& Color Repair Deep Nourishing Treatment Mask. It nourishes the scalp deeply and is formulated to provide up to 95 percent more damage-resistant hair in three minutes, resulting in less breakage when combing, compared to using a non-conditioning shampoo” says Atkin. ‘Summer-ize’ your home to look and smell wonderful in warmer weather

Organize It! (BPT)

(BPT) -

T

he three R’s aren’t just reading, ‘riting and ‘rithmatic. In the summer, they refer to “reorganizing,” “restyling” and “reviving” your home. It’s the perfect time to bring a summery, comfortable feeling to your home’s interior. Luckily, you don’t need to redo every room or throw out all your furniture to get a wonderful seasonal change. Spend a weekend giving your living spaces a lighter, fresher feel. At the end, you might even think you’re on a summer vacation.

Get Rid of your Nightmarish Closet Plus $ 100 FREE Accessories* For any room in the house! Inner Space Systems has over 35 years of experience in providing and installing quality products for your home. Visit our showroom or visit our website for a glimpse at what we can do for you!

Home and lifestyle expert Evette Rios has some simple suggestions that can make powerful impressions throughout your house.

Reorganize Boost the excitement and va-va-voom in your rooms by moving just a few things around. You’ll be amazed at the new looks you can create. Something as simple as changing the angle of your couch and voila - new room! Try this scuffproof method for moving heavy pieces: Fold two clean towels (dirty ones can scratch floors), place one under each end of the furniture piece, and then slide it across the floor. This might also be the time to incorporate a few white wicker pieces, which will add a summery touch.

• Custom glass shower and tub enclosures

Take some time to sort through your linen closet and remove unwanted items. Put old or unused linens into a “giveaway” bag. Store bed linen sets inside one of the pillowcases, and you’ll never have to hunt through piles looking for a match. All you’ll have to do is grab and go. Want a closet full of freshness? Place a few Gain dryer sheets in with your folded sheets to keep them smelling great.

• Custom mirrors

Restyle

• Bath hardware (including ADA compliant hardware)

Fresh new accessories can help to brighten up each room in your home. Turn plain lampshades into fabulous ones by adding bright or printed linings that come to life when you flip the switch. You might even want to swap out the art on your walls, adding more colorful pieces that are floral or botanical. If you’re feeling really ambitious, consider painting a few walls to add a clean, fresh look to your rooms. Try bold colors you’ve never had before to really change up the look.

Want to get the kids involved? Turn some drab kitchen aprons into fun “cleaning armor.” Give each child his or her own apron to decorate with markers or stickers to wear, and send the kids on their mission to dust, clean windows, organize, etc. They’ll love wearing something they decorated themselves. Don’t forget to ask their opinions on the changes you’re making - you might be surprised at their great suggestions.

Revive If you’re packing away heavy clothes or quilts for the season, ensure they maintain a fresh scent by using new Gain Original Fireworks In-Wash Scent Booster in the wash before you store them. It’s safe for use on all colors and fabrics and the freshness lasts up to 12 weeks in storage (just in time to take them out for the fall). Make your laundry room a place you’re not afraid to enter. De-clutter the room by installing a tension rod to hang spray bottles, cleaning supplies and more. You can also decorate the room with your kids’ artwork to make it a fun space. Your summer home makeover doesn’t need to be expensive or time-consuming. Ambitious projects might take a little longer, but you’ll be pleased at how simple it is to transform some of your rooms from drab to wonderfully fresh. Just don’t wait too long - summer doesn’t last forever! For more inspiration, visit ILoveGain.com or facebook.com/gain.

Compulsive Hoarding

oarder: a person who compulsively acquires a lot of stuff and then has difficulty discarding the objects he/she obtains.

Compulsive hoarding is an anxiety disorder. Not everyone living with clutter is a compulsive hoarder. Compulsive hoarding affects 1 million people in the United States. The compulsion to hoard often starts during the childhood years but usually doesn’t become severe until adulthood. Hoarding often runs in families. Compulsive hoarders often suffer with indecisiveness. There is an inability to distinguish important from unimportant objects.

7421-3 Richmond Rd • Williamsburg (Norge)

The compulsive hoarder rarely recognizes the extent of their problem. They often have “clutter blindness”. When alone, they tend not to notice it. When they do become aware, they often become ashamed and depressed. If the hoarder is embarrassed by the house and they don’t want people to see how they live, it is an encouraging sign since it means that the hoarder has accepted that there is something not right. This can be a first step towards seeking help. Most hoarders are capable of discarding things if they can convince themselves that the object will not be wasted, or that it will go to good home, or that the opportunity that it once presented is no longer valid. Quite often the compulsive hoarder can feel tormented by their situation and demoralized by their inability to do anything about it.

Need A New Look? Do You Have An Unfinished Room? Decorating Seems Too Confusing?

Let Me Help!

There is very little support available for clutterers and compulsive hoarders. Increasing amounts of useful information can be found developing on the internet. There are self-help support groups and on-line support groups available. A hoard can become a major health hazard, fire risk or has promoted vermin. In these cases someone (usually a family member or caring neighbor) needs to step in and intervene for the health and safety of the afflicted person. PuroClean is a certified remediation professional that works sensitively and discretely on decluttering and sanitizing properties. Call Mike O’Donnell Today at 757-208-7377

ROAD TRIP TIPS TO SPICE UP SUMMER

t’s the great American summer travel tradition: the road trip. Whether you stay close to home or take off for a coast-to-coast jaunt, there’s no better way to enjoy the experience of travel as much as the destinations you visit. But a truly great road trip doesn’t just happen - it takes careful planning and the right gear.

I

When you pull out the map to plot your route, start thinking of ways to make your road trip easier and more fun than any you’ve done before. Ensure everyone is involved in the planning stage, from mom and dad to the youngest kids, so that each family member feels that they’re contributing and putting their own spin on the trip. Before the big departure day arrives, create some great playlists, buy on-the-go snacks and be sure to give the car a thorough inspection. That way, when you’re ready to hit the road, you’ll be doing it in style (and safely). While planning will set the right tone for the trip, your on-the-road travel style can make your trip even more memorable. Keep these tips in mind to make your trip the ultimate road experience. • Save smart: One of your biggest expenditures on a road trip will be gas, so keeping your budget in check means looking for the best deals at the pump. Luckily, you don’t have to drive to every gas station in town, or wait to see if the price is better at the next exit. Using the YP - Local Search & Gas Prices app, you can easily find the best gas prices nearby, along with directions for how to get there. Even if it’s a savings of a few cents per gallon, it can really add up - and leave more money for fun. • Get local: One of the greatest things about visiting new places is getting a taste of the local culture. Whether that means digging into a slice of the famous pie at the best diner in town or picking up your morning java at the mom-and-pop coffee

shop, you’ll enjoy the city like a local by trying out one-of-a-kind favorites. Use your smartphone and the YP app to discover all the favorite neighborhood spots. • Find extra fun: You can’t plan for everything and in fact, you shouldn’t. Leave some room for improvisation, adding some unexpected adventures to the itinerary along the way. In fact, flexibility in schedule and the ability to sightsee are the two most appealing benefits of driving over flying, according to a recent survey by YP. When you’re in uncharted territory, make the most of a smartphone by searching to discover local boutiques, gift shops, museums and more. The places you hadn’t planned on visiting might just end up being the most memorable part of your trip. There’s nothing that captures the carefree spirit of summer quite like a road trip. Make plans in advance and travel smart and you’ll embark on a road trip journey that everyone will remember for years to come. For more great road trip inspiration, visit http://yp.com/news/travel.

What Mindy would like to try next time: Though I am not a huge tuna person, the Tuna Mignon caught my eye . It’s a mélange of Wild Mushrooms with julienne Red Peppers sautéed with Shallots and White Wine in a Sweet Chili and Butter sauce.

S

ometimes you just feel like getting all fancied up and treating yourself or anyone your with to a finer level of dining. One where you know that you will be enjoying a taste and an ambiance created by highly trained and extremely talented artisans. There’s not too many places here in Williamsburg that offers that. Opus 9 though, is one of them. High ceilings, beautiful architecture, well chosen and placed works of art as well as a HUGE selection of wines shelved all along the walls throughout the restaurant gives Opus 9 a very upscale and classy New York style vibe. Everything from the brightness of the lights to the butter and the bread feels likes it’s been meticulously thought about and cared for. I loved their butter and bread by the way. Which happens to be one of those little things that I always look for and hope in a restaurant. A perfect segue to the food… We had the New Orleans Style Barbecued Shrimp – “Fresh Cracked Pepper and Rosemary Marinated Shrimp simmered in Butter, White Wine, Garlic and other Classic Spices. Served over Toasted Crostini.” as our appetizer. This was very good. An appetizing, slightly spicy creamy orange/red sauce smothered over a row of shrimp on top of a long slice of a garlic crostini. I really enjoyed this. Their Caprese Salad –“Red and Yellow Tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, red onion and a chiffonade of fresh Basil with our house Basil Vinaigrette Dressing.” was nicely done. Cool and refreshing with large slices of fresh mozzarella. The Chicken Genoese –“Pesto Marinated Chicken Breast Sauteed Spinach and Sun Dried Tomatoes. Fresh Mozzarella.” was delicious. I really liked the mozzarella melted on top of the chicken and that tasty pesto sauce with the sun dried tomatoes throughout. And then I had the Oscar 9 –“Center Cut Filet

Mignon. Cooked to your liking. Atop marinated Portabella Mushroom and Asparagus Topped with Classic Béarnaise Sauce and Sautéed Lump Crab Meat.”. Wow. It looked like a boat of steak bearing a precious cargo of succulent crab meat to your mouth. PERFECTLY, and I mean perfectly cooked with tremendous flavor in the meat and accompanying sauce. It’s one of the best steaks I’ve ever had. Just magnificent. We finished off our meal with the Chocolate Concerto Plus!!! – “Molten Chocolate Cake with a warm center, Caramel Sauce and Kilwin’s Vanilla Ice Cream.” We cleaned the plate. The hot chocolate sauce seemed to endlessly ooze out of that cake as though it was reproducing itself. It flowed into the cool mound of ice cream producing a delicious chocolate/vanilla slurry which we quickly scooped up.

Eddie’s Favorite Thing: Oscar 9. A fantastic steak. What Eddie would like to try next time: New York Strip, AuPoivre –“Our New York Strip Encrusted With a Mélange of White, Red and Black Peppercorns: Pan-Seared and Deglazed with Brandy. Finished with a Brandy Cream Sauce.” Sounds awesome.

o Reviews and photography by husband and wife team, Mindy & Eddie Lepp.

Mindy’s Favorite Thing: I think my favorite thing about this restaurant is actually the whole package of atmosphere, decor and ambiance. My favorite dish, however, would have to be the crab cake sandwich. Most people complain about crab cake sandwiches having too much “filler”in them. Unless I missed something, it seemed like this one had none. The sauce that they made for the sandwich was amazing! I wish I could have taken home a bowl of it!

SUMMER FITNESS TIPS

(Family Features)

W

hether you want to get your body ready for swimsuit season or stay fit during the summer months, it’s important to find a fitness routine that you can maintain. These tips will help you get motivated and keep moving for a healthier body. Shake things up - Having a variety of fitness activities works different parts of your body, keeps you engaged in the process, and ensures you have some way to exercise no matter what the weather is like. Lifting weights, swimming, cycling, walking, dancing there are plenty of ways to have fun as you work out. Many people choose to include an exercise video game as part of their fitness routine. A study by the University of Calgary Exergaming Research Centre, the American Council on Exercise, and the University of Massachusetts Department of Exercise and Health Sciences found that when used at an intermediate or high intensity level, “exergaming” can improve your fitness. And another study, commissioned by the American Council on Exercise, found that the Zumba(r) Fitness program- experienced via a game or class - can burn a significant amount of calories due to its level of cardiovascular intensity. “The dance-based routines within Zumba Fitness Core are specifically designed to sculpt stronger abs and provide an exhilarating total body workout,” said Liz Buckley, General Manager of the Zumba Fitness video game franchise at Majesco Entertainment. “In fact, Zumba Fitness Core is the only video game on the market to target your core. With 33 different dance styles, and 40 contagious music tracks, you get an incredible amount of variety as you benefit from ‘exercise in disguise.’” Learn more at www.zumbafitnessgame.com. Buddy up with someone else - It’s harder to avoid exercising when you’ve made a commitment to someone else that you’ll be there. Partnering with a friend can make activities more fun, and you and your partner can help each other be accountable for working out. • Set a regular time and place to meet. Set ground rules for when it’s acceptable to miss a session and how you’re to communicate. • Make sure your partner is equally committed. • Have common fitness goals. • Be sure you have similar fitness levels and abilities. You can also buddy up online. For example, Zumba Fitness Core on Kinect for Xbox 360 enables you and friends to share fitness goals and work together to complete them. Buckley said that “Utilizing the game’s multiplayer feature, two-player on Kinect and four-player on Wii, you can party with friends and work out in a fun, cooperative way.” Reward yourself - Changing behavior is hard, but little rewards along the way can help you stay motivated. You might enjoy a new pair of walking shoes when you reach 5,000 steps a day or a new DVD after sticking to your plan for 30 days. * Set achievable goals. It won’t help you to set goals you can’t meet - you’ll either injure yourself or be constantly discouraged. It’s OK to start small and work your way up. * Make sure the rewards are appropriate. Enjoying a calorie-laden meal or sugary treat after hitting a goal isn’t the way to go. Look for non-food related rewards that will help motivate you to keep going. * With Zumba Fitness Core, for example, when you reach certain goals, you are rewarded with lifestyle tips, achievements and unlockable bonus videos that give you a behind-the-scenes peek at the celebrity Zumba instructors featured in game. It’s easier - and more fun - than you might think to get in shape for the summer and find a fitness program you love.
