GIVING BACK TO THE EVERYDAY HEROES WHO INSPIRE YOU
W
hen you think of public servants or people who do heroic jobs, do you picture police officers, firefighters and soldiers? While all those people selflessly serve the public, they’re not the only everyday heroes whose jobs contribute to the greater good. The field of public service is broad, encompassing teachers, health care workers, law enforcement professionals and social workers. Demand is high for caring, trained professionals to fill a growing number of jobs in public service fields. In fact, job opportunities are expected to grow 22 percent for social and human service assistants, 7 percent for firefighters, 6 percent for high school teachers and 5 percent for police officers and detectives, across the nation by 2022 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Some of the professionals to fill those jobs will
(BPT)
come directly from colleges like Kaplan University, where first-time students will pursue coursework designed to specifically prepare them for public service careers. Others will be career changers, like Arthur Chapel and Melissa Bowermaster, who entered public service after enduring personal challenges and were inspired by the caring help of other public servants. “I was in a bad place, and someone helped me,” says Arthur Chapel, who successfully completed substance-abuse treatment and then decided to change careers to become a counselor. “Now I give back by helping others who need it. I have the satisfying career I always wanted and I get up every day eager to go to work because I know I’m helping people who need it.” “Working in law enforcement, I saw every day the caring of the human services people I came into
contact with,” says Melissa Bowermaster, executive director of Citrus County Child Advocacy Center in Florida. Her interaction with these professionals, especially those who worked with children, inspired her to return to school to pursue a human services degree. After graduating from Kaplan University with a bachelor’s degree of science in human services, Bowermaster went to work advocating for children in need in Citrus County. Chapel and Bowermaster aren’t alone in finding inspiration from the everyday heroism of public servants. Each day, these professionals have a positive effect on thousands of people across the country. 10 Tips to Beat the Summer Heat By Janice Underwood

s summer sets in, the heat does too. If you are like me, you are always wondering how you can make your life indoors and outdoors as comfortable as possible. We can’t do anything about triple digit heat numbers outside, but there are things to keep in mind to help you enjoy outside fun or keep your energy bill down inside your home. Here are few tips to keep in mind as you enjoy the lazy days of summer: •

JULY 2014
If you live in a two-story home, you might notice that the second floor is hotter than the first floor. This is because heat rises. So, here’s what you do… Close most of the vents down stairs and keep the vents open upstairs. This will cause the cool air to be focused on the second floor. Reverse this system in the wintertime to increase the heat on the first floor. Avoid running your dishwasher, clothes washer, and clothes dryer before 5 pm. These appliances give off heat and make you’re A/C unit work harder to keep your home cool, especially during the hottest hours of the day. Take cool showers instead of hot showers, which limits the amount of steam and heat that escapes out of the bathroom and into the home. Drink at least 64 ounces of water EVERYDAY, which equals to four regular sized bottles of water. If you are going to be outside for extended periods of time, you need to increase your water intake. If you feel unusually tired, dizzy, or experience blurred vision, seek a cool shelter and medical attention right away. Young children and senior citizens may not notice they are thirsty, so encourage fluids throughout the day even if thirst is not evident. Water boils at 212 degrees (Fahrenheit), so be careful when you take your children to the playground because the equipment could be hotter than 300 degrees and cause dangerous burns. Schedule an A/C check up with a licensed contractor to inspect your unit to avoid unexpected outages. Keep your blinds and curtains closed during the hottest hours to block the sun. Keep the thermostat set on one temperature, as opposed to changing it up and down. Moving the temperature often increases your energy costs. Change your filters at least once a month to keep you’re A/C unit running efficiently. Enter through your garage if you have one to avoid the cool air escaping through your front door.
PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR OUTDOOR ENTERTAINING N
ow that the weather is warmer, you may be thinking about your first gathering of the season, but before the guests arrive, get your backyard in shape with these easy and affordable tips. (BPT)
• Take advantage of green space. One of the first things guests will notice about your backyard is the yard itself so give your lawn a little TLC before the day of the event. Mow the lawn and bag the clippings if your grass is long - this will prevent those stragglers from sticking to your guests’ shoes and feet. Next, trim the bushes and pick up any lose sticks or toys that may be lying on the lawn so guests won’t step on or trip over something they wish they hadn’t. • Make patio furniture sparkle. Your guests will want a place to sit and relax, so pull your patio furniture out from storage and give it a thorough cleaning with Arm & Hammer Baking Soda. You can also sprinkle a little baking soda underneath the chair cushions to keep your outdoor furniture fresh all season long. • Add a dash of color. Nothing complements your green space like a little pop of color. If you have a flower box, head to your local home-improvement store and pick-up flowers to suit your style. If you don’t have a flower box, you can purchase inexpensive planters and hang them in your backyard. If you have time, paint the flower boxes in a complementary color. • Get the grill ready. If your annual summer tradition includes barbequing, make sure the grill is ready to be the center of attention. Sprinkle Arm & Hammer Baking Soda on a damp brush to scrub the grill clean. For tough, greasy stains, scrub with a wire brush and a paste of three parts baking soda to one part warm water. No matter which cleaning regimen you use, remember to rinse the grill thoroughly after scrubbing. • Make your deck shine. The deck is a frequent stopping point for guests, especially if it’s near the grill or coolers, so give it a thorough power wash to remove winter residue. For wood decks, check that all of the boards are structurally sound and that none have elevated nails or splinters. If you have time, consider putting a fresh coat of water sealer on your deck to make it shine all season long. Whether you’re hosting a barbecue, evening soiree or pool party, taking simple steps to prep and clean your home now will save you time and stress in the future. For more ways Arm & Hammer Baking Soda can help get your patio and yard ready for the summer season, visit ArmandHammer.com.

Marla was still awake when Amber came in a little after one. She’d debated for hours about confronting her new roommate. How could Amber say such things about her? She’d been nothing but nice, welcoming, and friendly. Except for the whole reading her diary thing. Although she hadn’t meant to, that wouldn’t matter. Not only would it solidify all the bad things Amber had said, she’d also mar the image of the God she professed faith in. In the end she’d decided to keep silent. The confession would only hurt Amber and it wouldn’t do anyone any good. The decision hadn’t, however helped her get to sleep. Amber hadn’t been exceptionally talkative since moving in. Truth be told, she didn’t really know much more about her roommate than she had Part 8 after their first meeting. The girl attended classes full time at Christopher Newport. She was studying psychology, the same thing Marla had studied by Tracy Wainwright before going on to grad school to get her master’s in counseling. She asked Amber if that’s what she planned to do, but her answer was little more than a shrug. Amber worked at a car dealership part time to pay her bills. Beyond that, Marla hadn’t been able to figure out if she had family local or a boyfriend or even what she did in her free time. She came home exceptionally late most nights and her clothes often smelt like beer. She just hoped someone else was driving her home. She sighed and rolled on her side, wondering what she could do to get to know Amber more. Facebook. Maybe that would help. If Amber would friend her. If Marla sent the request, she wasn’t sure why she hadn’t already, maybe she’d feel guilty about not accepting the request. Then she might be able to work on creating an opening to get to know Amber better and even possibly create an opportunity to share God with her. Jen had been so much easier. Doubting God but open, friendly, and warm, she’d been easy to get close to. Marla’s dreams of repeating the great first roommate experience had fizzled out after the first two weeks. This relationship would take a lot more work to foster. She knew how to build client relationships, and had plenty of friendships that came naturally. Now she had to figure out how to pry open someone sealed tighter than a clam shell.

MENTORS WANTED: HOW TO GUIDE MORE YOUNG WOMEN TO SUCCESS IN STEM
C
areers in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) are growing and quickly. By 2023, STEM will generate a projected 2.6 million new jobs, creating a high demand for qualified employees with STEM backgrounds in the coming years, according to Georgetown Public Policy Institute’s Center on Education and the Workforce. Despite attractive career opportunities for the next generation of STEM workers, the industry continues to be predominantly male. Women make up only 24 percent of the STEM workforce, the U.S. Department of Commerce reports. Several programs nationwide are working to close the gender gap by encouraging participation among female students in STEM projects, activities and lessons early on in their education. DeVry University’s HerWorld is one such program. Its mission is to educate high school girls about STEMrelated fields and connect them with real-life role models. Throughout March, designated National HerWorld Month by DeVry University, thousands of young
women will interact with their peers, learn from experienced women in highvisibility STEM careers, and participate in confidence-building activities and hands-on workshops at HerWorld events across the country. “HerWorld was created 17 years ago to fill a need for programs that support and develop high school girls’ interest in STEM,” says Dr. Donna M. Loraine, provost/vice president of academic affairs at DeVry University. “While we have made great progress, our focus for HerWorld today is to encourage girls’ interest in these subjects in high school and beyond by connecting them with mentors who can show them that careers in STEM are challenging but realizable.” One-third of women who enter STEM bachelor’s degree programs after high school switch their major to a non-STEM field by the time they graduate, according to a study by the U.S. Department of Education and
(BPT)
National Center for Education Statistics. Demonstrating to teenage girls that there are women who will support them through their journey in STEM is an important part of HerWorld’s objective. This year for National HerWorld Month, DeVry University is partnering again with Mayim Bialik, best known for her television roles on “The Big Bang Theory” and “Blossom.” The renewed partnership between Bialik and DeVry is a natural fit given Bialik’s own STEM background: she earned her Doctorate of philosophy in neuroscience in 2007. “My biology tutor on the set of ‘Blossom’ was a tremendously significant mentor for me, inspiring me to look at science and my academic skills in a different way,” says Bialik. “Though I am currently employed primarily as an actress and not a neuroscientist, I still benefited from a role model showing me what I could achieve in the sciences. I think young girls today deserve the same thing and I want to give them the confidence they need to succeed in STEM.” The STEM industry has garnered national attention recently, most notably in President Obama’s 2014 State of the Union Address.

“Teachers and principals in schools from Tennessee to Washington, D.C. are making big strides in preparing students with skills for the new economy problem solving, critical thinking, science, technology, engineering, and math,” says President Obama. “Some of this change is hard. It requires everything from much more challenging curriculums and more demanding parents to better support for teachers and new ways to measure how well our kids think, not how well they can fill in a bubble on a test. But it’s worth it - and it’s working.” HerWorld is part of this national momentum. Bialik and guest speakers who are role models from a variety of STEM backgrounds will show high school girls how they can apply their skills and intelligence to unique and interesting careers in STEM. Programs like HerWorld address a vital need to provide girls interested in STEM with mentors who can guide and motivate them throughout their educational and professional journeys. Closing the gender gap requires opening the eyes of the next generation to the many possibilities in STEM, and no one can do that better than the women who have seen their own aspirations come to fruition.
TIPS TO CLEAN YOUR SHOWER ENCLOSURE
T
he simplest and preferred method of cleaning your unit is by washing it with clean water and drying with a soft cloth. If soil is still present after drying, a non-abrasive cleaner with a pH of seven to eight may be used. Comet Bathroom Cleaner® has been tested and is recommended by the Bath Enclosure Manufacturers Association (BEMA). Do not use scouring pads, sharp instruments, or acid-based cleansers to clean the unit. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions on the labels of household cleaning products. To protect the finish of your bath enclosure you should only use products recommended for glass and anodized aluminum surfaces by the manufacturer of the cleaning product. If in doubt contact the manufacturer of the cleaning product. Use of harsh cleansers or detergents not specifically recommended for use on anodized metal or glass surfaces may damage your unit. In some geographic locations extremely high mineral content or other foreign compounds in regular tap water causing excessive acidity or alkalinity can damage or discolor glass and anodized aluminum surfaces with repeated exposure. Etching of glass surfaces by chemical agents is irreversible and appears as a light gray or whitish stain on the glass that is rough to the touch and can not be removed. This is the same effect seen on a glass tumbler washed repeatedly in a dishwasher using strong dishwashing detergent. Spotting is normally the result of mineral buildup on the glass or metal. The anodic coating of aluminum is one of the hardest substances known and is chemically inert to most compounds, however it will be damaged by strong acidic or alkaline solutions. Any chemical that can remove mineral buildup on
the surface of aluminum can damage the anodic coating. This will dull or discolor the finish and, on gold units, ultimately cause the color to fade. The most reliable preventative measure to preserve the quality of your bath enclosure unit is to wipe the surfaces dry with a soft cloth after each use. Deluxe Acrylic Towel Bars should only be cleaned with a product that specifically states that it is safe for use on acrylic. Repeated use of cleaning products containing ammonia or alcohol will seriously damage the towel bar eventually causing crazing of the surface, cracking, and breakage.
Care and Cleaning of Your Enclosure Your enclosure can provide years of service and beauty with a minimum of care and maintenance. Cleaning your enclosure safely and effectively takes the right cleaner. With minimum maintenance and the right cleaner your bath enclosure should provide you with years of beautiful service. The key is to understand what types of cleaners to use and to avoid. Many cleaners labeled for use in bathrooms can damage the metal finish or scratch the glass of an enclosure. A short list of cleaning agents that should be avoided because they either damage the metal or scratch the enclosure surface includes: • Vinegar or vinegar based products • Abrasive or soft abrasive powders and liquids • Bleach or bleach based cleaners • Steel or Teflon pads © 2007, BEMA. MEETING BUYER DEMANDS IN A SELLER’S MARKET: TOP TRENDS FOR 2014
W
ith many real estate industry watchers predicting 2014 will be a seller’s market, you may think you won’t need to do much to sell your home this spring. Not so fast - while more buyers are likely to be competing for homes, that doesn’t mean they’re willing to settle for less than perfect. In fact, coming out of the real estate crash of a few years ago, buyers have learned the importance of getting the maximum value for their home investment. While home prices are expected to rise in 2014, buyers continue to have high expectations. Homes that meet buyers’ lists of “must-haves” and “would-love-to-have” features will be positioned to sell more quickly and closer to - or above - list price, experts say. So what are homebuyers looking for in 2014? Whole-home, beautiful energy efficient features In the earliest days of the efficiency trend, many buyers would have settled for a house that reduced heating and cooling costs through good insulation, or cut electricity bills with energy-sipping appliances. Modern buyers, however, are interested in homes that take a holistic approach to energy efficiency. That means supplementing energy savings with more thoughtful features like daylighting and natural ventilation through energy-efficient skylights, using solar-powered water heaters, and employing intelligent controls for skylights, other lighting and heating/cooling systems.
(BPT) Energy Star-qualified solar powered fresh air skylights and solar powered designer blinds add style while providing natural light, passive ventilation and privacy. Both are operated by remote control and qualify for a 30 percent Federal tax credit, as do installation costs.
Buyers want energy-efficient upgrades that also offer high aesthetic appeal in addition to functionality, making features like ENERGY STAR-qualified skylights particularly popular. In fact, 55 percent of homebuyers in a National Association of Home Builder’s survey said skylights are desirable or essential. Skylight manufacturer VELUX America notes that installing no-leak, solar-powered fresh air (venting) skylights not only enhances indoor air quality, but can boost energy efficiency, working in concert with windows. Add remote-controlled, solar-powered blinds and skylight energy performance ratings can improve as much as 45 percent. And solar powered skylights and blinds, as well as the installation costs, are eligible for a 30 percent Federal tax credit. Smarter size and space While buyers will always look to get the most bang for their buck, many are deciding that “bang” does not necessarily mean “bigger.” The great recession saw many families downsize into smaller homes - with more manageable mortgages. Even with the economy moving again, many homeowners have found they like the efficiency and utility of smaller, more purposeful spaces.

The functionality of a room is now as important as its size. Buyers will continue to embrace rooms that make the most of the space available, such as compact kitchens that maximize storage, smaller bathrooms that optimize lighting efficiency and privacy, while saving wall space through use of skylights, and open rooms that serve multiple purposes. To see how skylights would look in any room in your home, get a skylight planner app, take pictures in your home, and overlay skylights and blinds on the images with a few clicks. Aging-in-place potential As more baby boomers approach and enter their golden years, homebuyers are looking toward the future and seeking homes that offer the potential of allowing them to age in place. In demand are home features that not only look good now (such as an open floor plan or larger bathroom) but that can be easily adapted for older occupants who may face challenges with mobility, vision and other age-related issues. A range of home features fit the bill, including ground-floor bedrooms, ample natural lighting to enhance vision, open floor plans that minimize obstacles to mobility, larger bathrooms that can easily be fitted with grab bars, kitchens with age-friendly features such as touch faucets, and smaller yards with lower maintenance requirements. While higher demand and less inventory are likely to make 2014 a better year for sellers than buyers, if you’re selling your home, knowing what buyers are looking for can help ensure a faster, more rewarding sale - in any market.
Bringing the “Clean” back to your laundry
D
id you know that laundry detergent is not soap? It is petrochemical disguised as soap by adding sudding agents, color, perfumes, and bleaching additives to remove stains. What is so alarming about this is , when laundry detergent was developed there was no product testing completed on humans to determine what effect these petrochemical would have on human beings. Fast forward to the 21st century, we are now living with the results of toxins and chemical in our bodies. Our eco-system is contaminated and there are countless health issue that are linked to these chemicals. A 1995 study by Clemson University found that laundry detergent leaves residue on clothing as much as 2% of the fabric weight. This toxic
residue equals nearly a full scoop of detergent powder or liquid. These chemicals are fat soluble, meaning they are easily absorbed by humans skin. Countless studies have linked petro-chemicals to a long list of health problems including asthma, autism, allergies, birth defects, eczema, and infertility. Obesity and even cancer* Companies are not required to list their ingredients and they don’t. So, even the so called natural and free and clear detergents use petro-chemicals. Now there is an alternative that works! It is Family friendly 365 loads, 13 cents per wash, Eco friendly, no toxic residue in your clothes or in the environment , Energy friendly you do not need to do a rinse cycle, and it uses only cold water, Budget friendly it does not bleach your clothes so clothes last longer. 5 SIMPLE TIPS TO PREPARE YOUR HOME FOR FLOOD SEASON The No. 1 natural disaster in the U.S. is floods: Is your home ready?
A
fter a winter of frigid temperatures and record snowfalls, the nation now faces the spring thaw and long, rainy months. Flood season is officially here - is your home ready for it? Floods are the most common natural disaster in the United States. Over the past five years, the average flood insurance claim was more than $35,000, according to FEMA.gov. If you or someone you know has ever experienced a flood, you know that cleanup can require a massive effort. The best defense against flooding is a proactive approach. Consider these flood tips to prepare your home and family for flood season: 1. Get a shop vac Every home that is susceptible to water and moisture should have a reliable shop vac. This type of vacuum sucks up water quickly and efficiently. Keep in mind, flood cleanup must be done quickly within the first 48 hours to avoid mold growth and extensive property damage. 2. Test your sump pump Take the time now to test your sump pump. Simply lift the float on the side of the pump and listen for the pump to turn on; that noise indicates your pump is working correctly. Next,
install a water alarm that will let you know if water is accumulating in your basement. An alarm like AdvanTEXT from WAYNE Pumps sends text messages to up to three people in the event of power outages or high water levels. If you are away from home or even out of town, you can take immediate action to protect your property, rather than unknowingly coming home to a flooded basement. Visit www.waynepumps.com/ preventflooding for more information.
5. Update insurance Homeowners and renters insurance typically do not cover losses due to flooding. You must purchase additional insurance or riders specific to flood coverage, if available to you, in order to protect your property from this type of water damage. Call your insurance agent today to discuss options, and keep in mind it typically takes 30 days after the purchase of flood insurance before it goes into effect.
3. Seal cracks Seal the cracks in the basement floor and foundation to prevent water seepage when the water table gets too high. Similarly, if you have concrete walls, be sure to seal those cracks as well. This is a simple DIY task that can be done using a variety of affordable sealant materials available at home improvement stores.
In addition to preparing your home against floods, it’s smart to prepare your family as well. Make sure all members know how to react to water within the house. For homes with the AdvanTEXT alarm system, make sure those who receive text warnings communicate with each other and have a plan for checking the home and cleaning up excess water, if necessary, before it damages the property. In the event of a flood, you can call Mike at PuroClean 757.208.7377.
4. Prepare and protect Irreplaceable items and heirlooms should always be kept on high shelving. Additionally, keep important documents in a safe place like a waterproof container. If you live in a flood-prone area, consider raising electrical sockets, fuse boxes and wiring 12 inches or more above the flood elevation. Finally, make sure gutters and downspouts are clear of debris so water can flow freely away from your home.

TIPS TO MAKE OUTDOOR PLAY A PRIORITY THIS SUMMER
T
he school year has ended and kids are more excited than ever to get outside and play. However, as the days grow longer and summer boredom sets in, it’s easy to become uninspired during playtime and it’s tempting for families to turn to DVDs and video games as entertainment. Keeping your kids active and playing during the summer months is important, since healthy lifestyle habits, formed through play and other physical activity, can lower the risk of obesity and its associated health issues, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Keep your family cool and refreshed while staying active by creating a do-it-yourself water park in your own yard. Simply setting up a sprinkler and putting on a swimsuit turns every game into a water game - water freeze tag, water volleyball or even water jump rope.
Many of the nation’s national parks are family friendly with the perfect combination of beautiful landscapes, fresh air, wildlife and fun recreational activities to captivate both parents and kids. These parks often feature walking or hiking trails to keep your family up and on their feet while they take in the natural scenery. A quick search online can provide many park options within an easy drive. • Host a donate-to-play field day Gather your neighbors or kids’ play group and organize a summer field day. Set up stations with classic games like a potato sack relay race, water balloon toss and three-legged race. Parents can man the stations or compete alongside their kids. Instead of an entrance fee, ask participants to contribute a monetary donation to a non-profit that promotes play. For example, Good Sports is an organization that helps to lay the foundation for healthy, active lifestyles by providing athletic equipment, footwear and apparel to disadvantaged young people nationwide. There’s nothing better than getting active and giving back while doing so.

GORGEOUS HAIR

aving hair that is resilient means it can bounce back from the constant challenges it undergoes on a daily basis. From morning workouts through evening soirees, the key to stepping out with your best hair is establishing a strong, healthy foundation, starting from the scalp.

To help women achieve the hair they have always wanted, Clear Scalp & Hair experts Dr. Francesca Fusco, a leading New York City dermatologist, and celebrity hairstylist Jen Atkin, share their go-to rules to live by for brilliant resilient hair. Rule No. 1 - Fuel your body with power ingredients Make a conscious effort to load up on power ingredients like cucumbers, celery, lemon, kale and aloe-vera to build resilience from the inside out. “Your diet plays an important part in keeping your hair in good condition. Eat foods high in omega-3 fatty acids like salmon to keep skin and scalp healthy,” says Fusco. Rule No. 2 - Keep hair hydrated Everyone knows that over styling takes a toll on your strands, but what you may not realize is that the scalp can lose up to one ounce of essential moisture a day. From the use of hot tools to constant pulling or coloring, it is important to build resilience so hair can withstand the daily torture it is put it through. “For a little extra TLC, use Clear Scalp & Hair Intense Hydration Deep Hydrating Treatment Mask once a week to replenish scalp and hair with an extra dose of moisture,” says Atkin. Rule No. 3 - Remember that scalp is skin too Over exposure to sun and harsh weather conditions, especially in the summer, can result in scalp and hair damage and dryness. Clear Scalp & Hair Intense Hydration Hydrating Shampoo and Hydrating Daily Conditioner are infused with Nutrium 10, a rich blend of vitamins and nutrients like vitamins B5, C and E and nourishing oils including sunflower, almond, soybean and coconut. Clear helps to restore moisture in the scalp and hair. “The scalp is where hair’s natural strength and beauty comes from so it is important to take care of it. Treat scalp and hair with nourishing ingredients like vitamins C and E to establish a resilient foundation,” says Fusco. For more tips from Clear Scalp & Hair visit: www.facebook.com/clearhaircare.

FOCUS ON YOUR CORE Tatrece Dunlap Swann
S
ummer time is a great time for exercise, enjoying the beach, getting in the yard and doing other fun activities. Most fitness experts suggest that our mid-section or “core” is essential for our posture, balance and other health benefits. Coincidentally, where people gain the most weight is in our midsection. While addressing our physical core is important for our physical health, taking care of our spiritual “core” is also important. As a full-time employee, wife, mother, church leader and “dance mom” for my daughter, I often find myself juggling one thing after another. I suspect that I am not alone, for most women must wear many hats and it is expected that we perform well in all of our roles. What helps me deal with everything that comes my way is that I am committed to finding time to work on my spiritual core. In my times of prayer, scripture reading and meditation I am reminded that I am not strong enough to handle everything on my own. Being
spiritually “centered” means that I have a higher purpose in life than just my daily routine. As I’ve worked on my spiritual core, I’m reminded that I am beautiful, one of a kind and precious to my God. Even when things aren’t going my way and life presents itself with challenges, because my spiritual “core” is solid, I remain confident that I will get through it and be better for it. I encourage you to find some time in your day, if only for a few minutes, to pause, reflect and work on your spiritual core. Like your physical midsection, it will improve other parts of your life; your self-esteem and worth, having a more positive outlook on life and most of all an assurance that everything will be ok. But just know that both your physical and spiritual cores take consistent time to develop and maintain. Remember, having a healthy midsection isn’t just about exercise; it also matters what you put in your body. Healthy eating plus exercise makes your physical core stronger. The same is true with our spiritual core; don’t allow negativity, which include people, places, things, thoughts or even words to dominate your inner
being. Make a conscious effort to live, think and be positive everyday. Being healthy is one of the greatest gifts we can have but you have the put the work in! Yet, if you do, you will be so much happier and healthier in every way. Ladies, enjoy the summer but let’s get to work, not just on our bodies, but our souls as well!

PREPPING YOUR MEALS FOR MORE NUTRITION
W
ant to obtain the most nutrition out of your meals? Incorporate fresh ingredients and pay attention to how they are prepped. A variety of cooking techniques can make certain foods are more flavorful while maintaining high nutritional levels. “To boost the flavor and nutritional value in our meals, we are constantly on the lookout for the freshest foods. Our go-to ingredients are wholesome foods like fresh vegetables and lean proteins like Eggland’s Best eggs, which are packed with more vitamins to help us feel great,” says Registered Dietitians Lyssie Lakatos and Tammy Lakatos Shames of The Nutrition Twins. “We also prepare our meals in ways that capture the most nutrients from our fresh ingredients.” Here are a few simple tips from Lyssie
Lakatos and Tammy Lakatos Shames on ways to maximize the nutritional benefits for certain foods: • Keep the golden nugget: Yellow is the new black when it comes to the egg. The majority of vitamins and nutrients of an egg are found in the yolk. Keep in mind that some eggs contain more nutrients than others such as Eggland’s Best eggs, which provide four times more vitamin D, double the omega-3s and 10 times the vitamin E when compared to ordinary eggs. When it comes to taste, there’s nothing like the flavor of freshness. In fact, a recent study from The Journal of Applied Poultry Research confirmed that the hen feed and processing production of Eggland’s Best eggs make them the leader in egg freshness. • Goodbye to boiling, hello to steaming: Boiling your vegetables is a surefire way to lose
nutrients. The water soluble vitamins like vitamin C and folate will leach into the water instead of going into your body. If eating raw vegetables isn’t for you, try steaming them to retain nutrients. By steaming, you’ll also get tender, crispy and flavorful veggies. • Keep the peel: The skin of fruits and vegetables like apples, potatoes and cucumbers is packed with nutrients and fiber. By peeling the skins of these fruits and vegetables, you are also peeling away valuable nutrients. Some foods, such as potatoes, provide even more fiber in their skin than in the whole item. And, when it comes to flavor, the crispy skins are often the best part. You can find fresh and nutritious recipe ideas, including these Veggie Frittata Bites, at www.egglandsbest.com or www.pinterest.com/egglandsbest.
