5 UNEXPECTED TRAVEL ESSENTIALS FOR YOUR SUMMER ROAD TRIP

S

ummer vacation is the time to pack up the family, dust off your suitcases and hit the road. These short summer months will be filled with trips to Grandma and Grandpa’s, adventures in the great outdoors and sunny days at the amusement park. Once you’re on the road, you’ll be making fun memories that will be shared with friends and family long after the summer months have come to an end. When it comes to packing the family into the car for a summer road trip, there are five essentials you don’t want to forget. 1. Snack foods - Everyone will get hungry at different times during the trip, and you won’t have time to stop for each and every tummy growl. With snack bags filled with dried fruit, nuts and granola bars, you’ll have nutritious and delicious foods to keep everyone happy until the next scheduled meal stop. 2. Entertainment kits - Children get bored on long car rides so before hitting the open road, ask

each child to pack a small, closable container filled with fun activities they would like to do in the car. Suggest that they bring along summer reading books, entertainment devices (don’t forget the extra batteries or chargers) and crossword puzzles or Sudoku. If it fits into their traveling case, they can bring it, and the closable container will allow you to keep the car tidy. 3. Toilet paper - When you’re on the road, a little touch of home can go a long way. Make sure to pack some basic comforts - like your favorite toilet paper - so you can enjoy the go even when you’re miles from home. According to a survey conducted by Charmin and Wakefield Research, 23 percent of Americans admit to clogging a toilet in a public restroom and 21 percent in a hotel room. To avoid this situation, and bring some of the familiarity of home with you on the next family vacation, be sure to pack Charmin Ultra Soft and Charmin Ultra Strong toilet paper. Both are Roto-Rooter approved and come with a clog-free, septic-safe guarantee.

4. First aid kit - Bumps, scrapes and other minor illnesses are bound to happen when you’re enjoying an adventurous family vacation, but don’t let them slow you down. Pack the first aid kit with treatments for car sickness, cold symptoms and bandages so you can resume your fun as quickly as possible. 5. Maps - You’d think in this day and age your smartphone and GPS units would help you navigate the country, but there are spots where service still isn’t available - especially when it comes to some of the road-trip-worthy wilderness areas. So pack some printed maps and have your kids follow along with the route while you’re driving so they can easily visualize how much ground you’re covering.

Marla hoped Amber got home on time. She’d been coming home pretty much right after work every night, not going out till all hours like she’d done the first couple months of living there. Amber still hadn’t opened up about whatever it was that had happened while she’d been in Tennessee. The doorbell rang again. Marla wove her way through the more than dozen people that were filling up her small apartment. It had been a good thing that she and Part 19 Amber had become friends online they first met. BY TRACY WAINWRIGHT when She opened the door and smiled. “Hi.” A couple of girls that looked barely college age returned her greeting. She stepped back. “Come on in. Amber’s due home in about fifteen minutes. I’m so glad you could come.” “Thanks for inviting us. Amber’s been so closed off lately.” Hmm. So it wasn’t just her. She returned to the kitchen and checked all of the snack bowls. They were still fairly full. Back in the den, she checked her watch. Five minutes ‘til Amber’s normal time to arrive home. “Okay everyone, thank you so much for being here.” The hum of conversation quieted. “Amber should be here in a few minutes. We can all move into the kitchen and hallway, if you don’t mind. I’ll turn out the lights in the living room. I parked down the street, and I thank you all for doing so, too, so she won’t expect anyone’s home. I’ll keep a lookout from my bedroom for when she pulls in.” The guests shuffled out of the living room and she flicked off the lights. Then, Marla squeezed through the half dozen people in the hallway and slipped into her dark room and planted herself by the window. “Lord, please let this work. I don’t know what else to do to reach Amber. She is so lost and hurt. Help her to open her heart to your love and see who you are.” Her quiet prayer didn’t change anything she could see, but provided a new sense of calm. All she could do was continue to love her hostile roommate. The rest was up to God. At that moment, Amber’s blue sports car pulled into the driveway. Marla felt she could almost detect the sadness in her eyes. What had hurt her so? She crossed her room and whispered, “She’s here.” The message passed down the hallway and snaked its way to the kitchen. The buzz quieted. For what seemed like several long moments everything was silent. Then finally there were footsteps on the outside steps leading to the front door. A key entered the lock and turned it. The door opened and Amber stepped into the living room. As if on cue, the guests yelled, “Surprise!” in unison. Her eyes rounded and her hand flew to cover her open mouth. Her teary gaze met Marla’s briefly before friends surrounded her and embraced her with joyful birthday wishes. Marla hung back and watched. ~*~ Marla rinsed the last bowl, turned the water off, and grabbed the almost soaked drying towel. Amber’s voice filtered into the kitchen as she said good-bye to her last guest and closed the door behind them. Her footsteps weren’t audible, but Marla knew she’d crossed the small room and now stood at the entrance to the kitchen. She slipped the bowl into its home in the top of the closest cabinet and turned to face her roommate. “Why,” she asked. “Why would you do this for me?” “Everyone deserves to celebrate their birthday.” “But I’ve been so mean to you. Hateful almost. I don’t understand.” Of course she didn’t. It made so much sense. Maybe she’d never had anyone show her true, unconditional love before. “It’s about love. My job is to love people because God loves me. And I’ve learned usually, when people are hurtful to others, it’s almost always because they’re hurting themselves. That doesn’t mean you don’t deserve love, but that you need it even more.” Amber’s mouth stood agape. She snapped it closed, then opened it once more. “Thank you.”

thegoodwife the Married To A Pastor fairness. It is essential to seek wisdom from God in giving advise to the man of God. When conferring as a couple on church related situations, I try not to let personal feelings rule my opinion, but to be lead by God’s heart for the good of the people and ministry. Personal sentiments should be set aside, in order to be able to assist the man of God in making wise decisions. We all know the influence a woman can have over her husband. So we need to be slow to speak and quick to seek God’s Face for wisdom. RENEW: What is the greatest blessing of being a pastor’s wife?

RENEW Magazine recently spoke with a local Pastor’s wife, Ms. Esther Torres and got some insight on what kind of role she has with her husband, Pastor Cecilio Torres’, ministry. RENEW: What boundaries have you established in order to protect your marriage and family? Esther: Boundaries in any relationship are important. This element requires several factors. You cannot let the circumstances involving the church, obstruct or interfere with the communication between you and your family members. I have learned to be real with both my home family and my church family. I believe wholeheartedly, that transparency and communication is the key to any relationship. Whether it be marriage, church, social or work related. As the old cliché goes “honesty is the best policy”. But honesty, should also walk hand in hand with love and patience, these being essential to the fruits of the spirit. Respect is one of the key factors in any relationship. Any subject can be spoken on, as long as the main ingredient of respect is present. I always taught my children, “it’s not what you say, it’s how you say it”. So, I would say my main boundary to protect my marriage and family is, that they be treated with respect, as respect is given. RENEW: What do you think is the most important responsibility as a pastor’s wife? Esther: Being a pastor’s wife is not an easy task. Sometimes you can feel like the ham in the sandwich. What do I mean by this? You have to learn to be the pastor’s greatest fan, but also his greatest critic. But because I love my husband, I am his best critic. People expect pastors to be picture perfect. When in reality, they are human beings just like yourself, who have been called to lead God’s People. I try to see myself as the woman the Lord called to assist the Man of God. To help protect and cover, especially when he ministers to and over the people. To be watchful and caring of the precious gift He has given us. But I am also my own entity with a ministry as well. So I always try to be unbiased and look at all matters and situations with

Esther: I truly have to say, that out of all the questions, this is the one that I find the most joy in answering. To be in a position where you have the ability to influence, guide and see the transformation and restoration of those who thought they had NO hope, is beyond words. I feel honored and privileged to have been chosen as a Spiritual Mother and to experience their levels of growth and maturity in the Lord. I find this to be amazing. When I am feeling weary and many times overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle of the Ministry, God always seems to touch someone to speak on how their lives were touched and changed through the ministry. Words cannot describe the feeling of seeing one of your spiritual children growing and developing in their prophetic destiny. It then all makes sense and makes every tear, every heartbreak so worthwhile!

RENEW: What is your favorite past time or hobby? Esther: Honestly, I’m a kid at heart. I love the rides at Busch Gardens, games and bowling. None of which my husband likes. So, in an effort for us both to come to common ground, we enjoy whatever little quiet and quality time we have at home alone or with family. I also love shopping, which I really do when my daughter visits from Florida. That is our girl time when she comes to visit. I also love to decorate, which my son gives me ideas and opinions on. In essence, I am a pastor’s wife, but also my own entity. And though at times in ministry, I may feel as though I’m invisible, God always reminds me that He sees and He knows me by name. My Ms. Esther Torres & Pastor Cecilio Torres greatest desire is to Oasis of Life Christian Church fulfill my prophetic destiny by reaching the lost, hopeless and hurting. To minister especially to the hearts of women and be able to share the Gospel with integrity and truth. To show and lead others to know their Creator and how it states in Psalms 139 “How we were all Fearfully and Wonderfully made.

RENEW: How do you find time to renew yourself for ministering to others? Esther: This is not easy. We all know that the renewing of the mind comes through the word of God. But with all the challenges the ministry brings, it is very easy to become overwhelmed and drained. At the beginning of the Pastoral walk, it was extremely difficult for me to detach myself from all the things involving the church. Even when we would go out of state, my heart and mind were still in Virginia in Oasis of life., I would wonder and worry on how everything was going and if everything was under control and in order. Despite the fact, that we have strong and faithful ministers and leaders who are dependable and ministerially prepared, my mind and heart could not find a way to separate myself and just relax and enjoy. One of the things I developed in my life, was to have that me time in the early hours of the morning, with the Lord. That time when I can just be myself and pour my heart, concerns and questions out to Him. The silence of the early morning, helps me to create an atmosphere of intimacy and trust, where I can just open myself up to Him and receive what He may need to speak and pour out into my life. Those quiet moments, when I can feel His presence and know that no matter what is going on around me, everything will be alright. I try to keep an open ear and open heart. An important factor for me is, I ask God to examine my heart every day. I have learned, that if the heart is right and positioned correctly to the word of God, then you possess the vital ingredient to breathing and speaking word of life over others. A happy heart renews the soul. JUNE 2015 RENEW

hange is the only constant for Millennials in the beauty and fashion world, suggests a recent survey. Millennial women, ages 18 to 29, feel empowered to embrace change and showcase a variety of colors when it comes to their appearance. The survey, conducted by Alcon and Kelton Global, found that Millennial women are more inclined to pull fresh trends and colors into their beauty and fashion selections - a departure from the more simple styles embraced by Generation X. With over half of Millennials describing their style as always changing, this bold new take allows for a great deal of freedom and flexibility in personal expression. Color is one of the major factors that allows these Millennials to stand out and express themselves. In the survey, 71 percent of women stated that adding color to their look is one of the most effective ways to showcase their personality.

Simple Space Making Tips From the garage to the living room, every area of the home is susceptible to clutter. Use your weekend, along with some of these clutter-free solutions, and breathe new life into your spaces. * Be a successful sorter. Since tidying up a space requires time and patience, sorting your items can make the task at hand a bit easier. Use large laundry hampers or storage bins and label them as “keep,” “trash,” or “donate/sell.” Ask yourself the last time you used the item in question. If the item hasn’t been touched in years, it may be time to let it go. * Start small. The task of organizing an entire room can be daunting, so take baby steps. Direct your attention to sorting one shelf, cabinet or wall at a time, being careful not to move to another area until the first section is complete. When you feel like giving up, look at the space you’ve spruced up to reenergize and refocus on your next tidying task. * Keep it up. After you’ve tackled a weekend cleaning session, revisit these once-cluttered areas at least once a month. Spending just 15 minutes to keep areas neat and orderly can save you big time later on.

THE SIGNIFICANCE OF A FATHER’S BLESSING Each May, we celebrate Mother’s Day and all of the women that stand up to fill the role of a mom whether physically or figuratively. As we give honor to mothers, we must not forget to celebrate the fathers as well. Our culture seems to place less value on the role of a father, and we see evidence of it everyday in pop culture as well as the media. Typically, Father’s Day is a much less celebrated occasion. When we visit the greeting card stores, we tend to see a combined section of ‘dad’s and grads, where as for Mother’s Day, we saw an abundance of cards that celebrated the mother role from many different perspectives...mother, grandmother, aunts and the list continues. As we approach Father’s Day, I can’t help but to reflect on my own relationship with my father. Growing up the youngest of two daughters, my relationship with my dad was special, and while he was not a perfect man with his own challenges, I still carry very fond memories of my childhood. My dad instilled very strong values of self worth and discipline in my sister and I; and he gave us a real insight into the world of men. He opened doors, and pulled out chairs, he instilled a deep love for all kinds of music, but it was his physical presence in our home that left a lasting impression helping to shape the woman that I am today. As much as I appreciate and value my earthly father, there is a greater Father that I honor and worship. I love God who is my Father. He is my sustainer when I’m feeling weary, and He’s my comforter during those times of doubt and pain. More importantly, his Word has given me the foundation of how to live my life, function as a wife and co-parent our children. Knowing that I was created in His image gives me the confidence and certainty that what He thinks of me is what matters most. As certain as I am of my earthly father’s love, I’ve come to realize that there is no greater love than the love of God the Father. Not only does God love me, but He values my well being and future. Jeremiah 29:11 says “For I know the plans I have for you....to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. It’s one thing for my dad to have had a plan for me, but it’s another to know that my Heavenly Father whom I’ve never met has an even greater plan for me. I recognize that there may be some readers who don’t have a great relationship with their dad, and if that happens to be you, please know that my Father in Heaven can give you peace in those areas you may lack. Happy Father’s Day! JUNE 2015 RENEW

PEOPLE WITH DIABETES NOW HAVE A CHOICE

T

he Animas® Vibe™ Insulin Pump and Continuous Glucose Monitoring CGM System. Now FDA Approved in the United Statesi

The American Diabetes Association estimates that 29.1 million Americans - or 9.3 percent of the population live with diabetes. As a complex, chronic disease, diabetes requires constant care and attention. This typically involves taking medication, monitoring blood glucose levels, and paying attention to food intake and physical activity - so finding the right tools is vital to successful diabetes management. In the fall of 2014, the Animas® Vibe™ Insulin Pump integrated with Dexcom G4® PLATINUM CGM technology, received FDA approval in the United States for use for adults age 18 years and older. The arrival of the Animas® Vibe™ System provides patients with another valuable CGM-integrated pump option, allowing them to choose the insulin delivery system that best meets their individual needs. Over the past several decades, there have been many developments and advances in diabetes care. One significant development of note is the availability of CGM-integrated devices. First introduced in 2006 and compatible with insulin pumps in 2008, CGM uses a tiny sensor inserted under the skin to continuously check glucose levels in tissue fluid through the day and night. A transmitter on the sensor sends information wirelessly to a monitor, providing real-time glucose values at regular intervals. The Animas® Vibe™ System, with CGM integration, provides patients with a more complete picture of their diabetes than finger sticks alone. Clinical studies have shown that adults ages 25 years and older with Type 1 diabetes who use CGM therapy to help manage their disease often experience significant improvements in blood glucose control(i). Furthermore, patients who use insulin pump therapy in combination with CGM may obtain lower HbA1c levels relative to baseline and relative to patients who use multiple daily injections and selfmonitoring of blood glucose(ii). Unlike other CGM-enabled pumps the Animas® Vibe™ System is the first and only insulin pump featuring Dexcom G4® PLATINUM CGM technology. The, Animas® Vibe™ System allows patients to view glucose data and administer insulin directly from the pump (iii), which means fewer devices to wear or carry. The Animas® Vibe™Insulin Pump is waterproof (iv) and has an easy-to-read color screen. More information about the Animas® Vibe™ Insulin Pump system can be found at www.animas.com. i The Animas® Vibe™ System is approved for use for adult’s age 18 years and older. ii New England Journal of Medicine. 2008; 359:1464-76. I thought it was truly amazing that the participants were able to let their abilities to take center stage so that they could accomplish their goals. This organization was enriching the lives of people with disabilities and I wanted to be a part of the effect. In November of 2007, I used what I knew to contribute to the special needs community- I held the first annual Miss Amazing pageant. What began as my way to share my experiences with girls with disabilities in Nebraska, has become my passion and future career. To date, the Miss Amazing pageant has raised over $50,000 and 750 pounds of food for the Nebraska community. The mission is now spreading nationwide with 11 state pageants being held spring/ summer of 2012. The more communities that are involved, the stronger Miss Amazing Inc. will be because the communities will inspire the organization’s design. The participants, volunteers, friends, family and community leaders will be the ones to shape Miss Amazing Inc. into something that truly highlights the abilities of those with disabilities. Miss Axa Melannie Ibarra Castellanos has been selected as the Virginia representative to attend the 2015 National Miss Amazing Pageant™ and will be traveling to California July 24-28, 2015 to participate in this event. Please consider sponsoring Miss Axa Melannie Ibarra Castellanos by contributing to her sponsor fee and travel costs. Participant’s expenses include a $100 registration fee, hotel costs, gas, flight and food. 3 WAYS TO MAKE YOUR BACKYARD IRRESISTIBLE TO KIDS THIS SUMMER

W

hen summer arrives do you see even less of your kids than you did during the school year? Too many American children, tweens and teens spend those extra hours of free time indoors playing with technology, rather than engaging in healthful activity outside. Even when you know where your kids are, you may not understand what they’re doing with all those devices and game controllers. This summer, why not help your children get excited about a healthy and fun time outdoors? You can make your backyard the neighborhood hotspot that no kid can resist by providing three key ingredients to a great summer: fun, food and friendship. Fun in the sun To compete with smartphones, PCs, tablets and other digital devices, you need outdoor excitement - the kind that only water can provide. Installing a backyard pool may not be practical for everyone, but a backyard water slide is. Easy to set up and use, a water slide is a costeffective way to create outdoor fun this summer. While parents may have mixed memories of fun and bumps from the water slides of their own childhood, modern options like H2OGO! backyard water slides offer the timeless appeal of water slides paired with modern technology to provide a more comfortable experience. H2OGO! slides feature the Speed Ramp, an inflatable launch pad that creates a smooth belly-flop landing at the start of the superfast 18-foot slide. A Splash Lagoon funnels water throughout the entire slide, reducing friction and increasing speed. Learn more at www.bestway-global.com.

Some of the simplest games are great icebreakers. One game that’s great for getting to know each other is to have kids stand in a circle and toss around a bean bag or small ball. The child who throws asks a question - such as “What’s your name?” or “What’s your favorite sport?” - and the child who catches has to answer.

Food for fun All that water sliding and other fun activity is going to make kids work up an appetite. They’ll need fuel so they can keep having fun. Look for fare that is easy, kid-friendly and nutritious. For example, instead of serving highfat, high-sugar ice cream, consider frozen fruit or fruit pops. Replace sugary, calorie-laden sodas with flavored water. For kids who crave crunch, replace chips with fresh-cut crisp fruits like apples and kid-friendly veggies such as carrots or cherry tomatoes. You can serve them with a variety of delicious, yogurt-based dips. Whip up a nacho platter that incorporates low-fat shredded cheese, fresh salsa and lean protein like beans or grilled chicken. Friendship and fun With your backyard gaining the reputation of the neighborhood hot spot for great food and fun, you may notice some new faces showing up. Encourage children to engage in games that can help them get to know each other and create new

Another fun idea for older children is a biography building circle. Kids sit in a circle and start with one child making a simple statement about himself, such as “I like to play baseball with my dad.” The next child in line adds his or her own information by building off something the first child said, such as “My dad is an airline pilot.” The play continues with children each saying something new that is somehow linked to what the last child said. Research shows that physical activity is good for kids. KidsHealth.org says exercise helps children develop stronger muscles and bones, control weight, lower their risk of type 2 diabetes and develop a better attitude about life. Parents can help kids get the exercise they need by fostering healthy outdoor play in their own backyards this summer.

TASTY SUMMER FARE AT STICKS KEBOB SHOP!

I

just can’t seem to get enough of my new favorite restaurant! Like most people, I get into various moods from time to time. Sometimes I want elegant dining, other times, I want to try something new and exotic and still other times I just want some good old fashioned fast food! But when I discovered located in the Courthouse Commons shopping center in Williamsburg, I became a less moody foodie! Now, I always want to go there. The kebobs are out of this world! Fresh herbed chicken, Chili-Spiked beef sirloin (one of my favorites), African Spiced pork loin or Grilled Lamb Kibbeh! The meats are cut, marinated and freshly herbed daily in their kitchen. Other kebobs include Lemon-Garlic Shrimp (I promise you, I fell in love) and Rosemary-rubbed leg of lamb (“Delish!!”). Accompaniments include Hummus, Eggplant Salad, Tabouleh and more as well as French Fries or Onion Rings if you like! You can order a flat-bread wrap with your favorite kebob inside, nestled in lettuce, tomato and your choice of gourmet homemade sauces. I chose the beef sirloin and I may just be ready to beg off burgers for life! Sticks Platter

in Williamsburg is delicious, fresh, Mediterranean-inspired food that is healthy for your heart! In fact, registered dietitians with Club Red, a University of Virginia Heart Center Initiative evaluated menu based on the American Heart Association’s guidelines for calories, total fat, saturated fat, sodium and dietary fiber and found the food at worthy of maintaining a healthy lifestyle. We Can Do It ~ And We Can Do It Today! This is fast food, fired up! And what a great time to indulge. Summer time is time! The prices are comparable to normal fast food restaurants, but the health factor and the taste factor far surpass the typical fast food experience. caters summer parties as well. One more suggestion; I recommend the Mango Lemonade to go along with your kebob! Unfortunately there are no locations in Newport News or Hampton yet, so you’ll have to go west (young man) just a few exits to Williamsburg to experience the tasty fare this summer of ! Happy summer eating friends!

SHIPPING TIPS FOR SMALL BUSINESSES AND CONSUMERS

W

hether you’re sending merchandise to customers across the country or sending a gift to a loved one across town, ensuring your shipments end up at their final destination can be a time-consuming and sometimes stressful process. “Getting things where they need to go can be costly to your wallet and your schedule,” said Cliff Rucker, Vice President of Sales for the U.S. Postal Service®, which provides convenient, affordable, top-rate shipping solutions for business owners and customers with its Priority Mail® services. “Luckily there are ways to make the act of shipping seamless and simple.”

Shipping tips for small businesses:

Whether you’re the small business owner shipping the product or the customer receiving the product, the experts at the U.S. Postal Service offer these tips to make sure everyone involved is satisfied with the experience.

1. Seek out free supplies. Many shipping carriers, like the U.S. Postal Service, offer free packing supplies to encourage the use of their services. Even business owners who buy supplies in bulk incur heavy expenses; seek out free offers when available.

Pack like a pro. Pick a strong and sturdy box, and tape it closed tightly. Cushion contents to protect during transportation. Be sure to wrap glass

Look 10 years younger with expert

anti-aging tips

D

o you have friends or family members who seem to never age? No matter how old they get, their appearance is youthful and glowing. While genes play a role in how the body ages, they are not the only factor in aging gracefully. In fact, erasing years from your appearance is actually simpler than most people think. “When a person is young, it’s easy to have clear, translucent skin. Keeping it that way is a lifelong commitment,” says Veronica Barton-Schwartz, a leading expert in skin care with more than 30 years of experience and owner of Veronica Malibu Skin and Body Care Center in Malibu, California. “Age is just a number when it comes to good skin care. My skin at 66 is better than it was at 30. I believe that all of us can age with grace and help delay the onset of age-related disease with a healthy lifestyle.” Barton-Schwartz’s clientele includes everyone from surfers who have sun-damaged skin to aging Hollywood actresses who are trying to maintain an edge in their career. She notes that repairing skin must happen from the inside out. Here are her top recommendations for maintaining that coveted youthful glow: Steer clear of skin saboteurs “Smoking and sun damage accelerate aging and put you at risk for certain cancers,” says BartonSchwartz. “Apply sunscreen faithfully. Opt for broad-spectrum formulas with antioxidants, such as vitamin C, to offset ultraviolet light. Be sure to wear a 4-inch brim hat, UV sunglasses and UV clothing when in the mid-day sun.”

Stay hydrated “I can always tell when someone isn’t drinking enough water from the condition of their skin,” says Barton-Schwartz. “Water protects cardiovascular health, keeps the brain in top working condition, facilitates weight loss and promotes detoxification. Water also transports oxygen to our cells, removes waste and protects our joints and organs.” Eat smart “What benefits the skin the most is eliminating sugar and white flour from your diet. You should also increase your consumption of fresh fruits, vegetables and lean protein, “ Barton-Schwartz says. “Then, add in an omega-3 supplement every day. My favorite brand is Nordic Naturals. Most associate omega-3s with cardiovascular health, but the benefits go far beyond the heart. Omega-3s benefit brain and cognitive function, joint mobility, eye health and healthy skin and hair, too. My skin looks better and I feel better when I take my omega-3 supplements.” Exfoliate regularly “A weekly buffing of the skin gets rid of dead skin and stimulates cell turnover,” says Barton-Schwartz.

“This helps your skin produce new collagen, leaving your face and body feeling smooth and refreshed. I recommend nonabrasive peels.” Break a sweat “Exercise improves circulation, increasing the delivery of oxygen and nutrients to your skin cells and tissues, and it also reduces wrinklecausing inflammation,” Barton-Schwartz says. Apply food-based nutrients “Research has shown that many food-based nutrients provide anti-inflammatory and antioxidant activity when applied topically,” says Barton-Schwartz. “Topical antioxidants work synergistically to enhance the natural health of the skin alongside a healthy diet and supplements. Our most popular antioxidant moisturizer contains ingredients like grape seed oil, orange flower, neroli, chamomile, sage, bergamot tea, avocado oil and soy.” Sleep well Barton-Schwartz notes the term “beauty sleep” actually has some science behind it. “Certain hormones are released during specific stages of sleep. A lack of consistent sleep disrupts the normal release of those hormones, impacting every single biological process,” she says. “This leads to an increase in inflammatory substances in your blood stream that damage your skin on a cellular lever, as well as accelerate aging.” Prioritize oral health “Poor oral health is linked to everything from heart disease to rheumatoid arthritis,” BartonSchwartz says. “I work with a dentist in Malibu and when someone thinks they need a facelift, what they really need is to get their teeth fixed. Nothing is more youthful than a healthy, beautiful smile.”

his year, recognize dad with the gift he’s really looking forward to receiving - a feast fit for a steak-loving king shared with family and friends. Fire up the grill and serve up robust, savory cuts, such as Omaha Steaks T-bone or Rib Crown selections for your Father’s Day celebrations. The T-bone is a thick cut to give you more bone-in strip and butter-tender Filet Mignon for even the heartiest of appetites, while the Rib Crown is carved from the most prized part of the Ribeye and is known for exceptional marbling, flavor and tenderness. Both cuts are grain-fed, aged to perfection and flash-frozen to capture freshness and flavor. Omaha Steaks make the perfect gift, so you can confidently ship them directly to your favorite fellow or grill them up for him at home. For more steak recipes for your Father’s Day celebration, visit www.omahasteaks.com. Using the proper grilling technique For exceptional steaks every time, incorporate these tips from Omaha Steaks Executive Chef Karl Marsh. 1. Clean and heat your grill on high. 2. Blot dry any moisture using a clean paper towel, and then lightly oil the steak before you put it on the grill. This helps the searing process and prevents sticking.

7. Keep a spray bottle with water handy to douse any unexpected flare-ups. 8. Use the 60/40 grilling method. Grill for 60 percent of the time on the first side, then grill 40 percent of the time after you turn over the food. This will give you an evenly cooked product. 9. Place your cooked product on a clean plate. Never place cooked product on the plate you used to transport the raw product to the grill without thoroughly washing it first. 10. Allow your steaks to “rest” for 5 minutes between cooking and eating. This will help retain moisture when you cut into them. T-Bone Steaks with Dad’s Steak Rub Prep time: 15 minutes | Cook time: 15 minutes Total time: 30 minutes Servings: 4 4 Omaha Steaks T-Bone Steaks 2 tablespoons cooking oil Dad’s Steak Rub (see recipe) Thaw steaks overnight in refrigerator or quick thaw by placing sealed steaks in sink with water for 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Heat grill on medium. Blot dry steaks with clean paper towel, then brush each side with cooking oil. Generously season both sides of steaks with rub. Grill steaks to desired doneness. For medium rare steak, grill for about 8 minutes on first side and 67 minutes on second side. Dad’s Steak Rub Yield: 1/2 cup 4 tablespoons coarse sea salt or kosher salt 1 tablespoon coarse ground black pepper 1 tablespoon coarse dehydrated onion flakes 1/2 tablespoon coarse dehydrated garlic 1/2 tablespoon crushed red pepper 1 teaspoon whole dill seed 1 teaspoon dried whole thyme 1 teaspoon whole cumin (toasted and crushed coarse) 1 teaspoon whole coriander (toasted and crushed coarse) Combine all and mix well. Store in air tight container or zip lock bag for up to 6 months. Note: To prepare cumin and coriander, toast by placing in dry pan over medium heat, shaking pan about 2-3 minutes until seasonings start to brown. Crush using bottom of pan on cutting board or with mortar and pestle.

Prepare rub recipe.

3. Season your food before grilling, preferably with Omaha Steaks seasonings. 4. Sear the outside of steaks when grilling. This really helps with the flavor and juiciness. 5. Use tongs or a spatula to turn your meat on the grill. Using a fork can damage and dry out the meat. 6. Cover your grill as much as possible during the grilling process.
