FIVE SAVINGS RESOLUTIONS FOR THE NEW YEAR s saving on your New Year’s resolution list this IReady.Save.Grow. year? The U.S. Department of the Treasury’s campaign offers five saving strategies that will have you moving toward your long-term savings goals and toasting along the way. “A new calendar year invigorates people to start with a clean slate, so it’s a great time to begin building or refreshing your savings goals,” says Jerry Kelly, national director of the Treasury Department’s Ready.Save.Grow. campaign. “Since saving for the future can be challenging, we’ve developed a resolution check list to help people celebrate small savings victories one at a time.” Resolve to accomplish these five savings goals in 2014: • Grow your tax refund - Rather than spend your refund, put the lump sum to work this tax season. Use IRS Form 8888 to direct all or a portion of your tax refund into your TreasuryDirect account. If you don’t have an account, you can open one at www.treasurydirect.gov. Tax season is also the only time taxpayers are able to buy paper Series I Savings Bonds, in amounts ranging from $50 to $5,000, using tax refund dollars. • Plan for the future with digital savings bonds Savings bonds are an affordable, safe and convenient way for people to accumulate money

for the future. A savings bond can be bought for just $25 and can earn interest for up to 30 years. Savings bonds may be used to achieve long-term goals such as retirement, college or a new home. If you need your money sooner, a savings bond can be cashed any time after 12 months. • Set up payroll direct deposit - You don’t need a lot of money to start saving and there are simple ways to accumulate funds. By using direct deposit to contribute to a TreasuryDirect account every payday, you’ll build your savings over time. The amount you set is automatically deposited into your account, so you won’t be tempted to spend it.

• Diversify with marketable securities - The Treasury Department offers an array of marketable securities with terms ranging from 4 weeks to 30 years. These securities can be bought for as little as $100 and held in TreasuryDirect until their term ends. Along the way you earn interest. For shorter term (one year or less) marketable securities, interest is paid at the end of the term. For longer term (more than one year) securities, interest is paid every six months. If you need your money before a security reaches its term, you can transfer it to a broker to sell. Marketable securities offer long-term savers the opportunity to diversify their savings and take control of their future. • Start your child on the path to savings - The earlier the better when it comes to saving. The Treasury Department has resources to help families start saving for their children’s future. Parents can set up a special account for their children within their own TreasuryDirect account so that savings bonds can be bought as gifts for their children. Bonds are held in this account until the child turns 18. In addition, the Treasury Department has a child-friendly website, TreasuryDirect KIDS (www.treasurydirect.gov/kids/kids.htm), with games, quizzes and videos that teach students from fifth to seventh grade in a fun and engaging way about the history and role of debt in America, and the basics of how Treasury securities work. Ready.Save.Grow. helps people take control of their future by providing information and resources about the safe, affordable and convenient savings options offered by the Treasury Department. Visit the website (www.treasurydirect.gov/readysavegrow), to learn more. You can also find Ready.Save.Grow. on Facebook and Twitter@ReadySaveGrow. PREVENT FROZEN PIPES FROM RUINING YOUR NEW YEAR

“Where we put our heart & soul into all our services”

pipe freezing can be a particular problem in Stheurprisingly, warmer climates of southern states. In our area, buildings may not be adequately constructed for cold weather conditions. Pipes often run through non-insulated or under-insulated areas. Unheated interior areas such as basements, crawl spaces, attics, garages, and kitchen cabinets, and those that run against exterior walls with little or no insulation are also susceptible to freezing. If the temperature drops below freezing for even a day, these pipes may freeze and break. Since most modern plumbing lines are inside walls hidden from sight, a freeze-caused leak is usually discovered only after water has damaged floors, carpet, walls, or ceilings. Occasionally, an occupant hears the sound of spraying water, but by then it may be too late. The leak has already caused some degree of damage. Following are some tips to help prevent damage from frozen pipes when away from your home for more than a day or two: 1. Shut off the water supply and drain pipes or appliances. 2. Have someone you trust check your home about once per week if you are away. 3. Have emergency numbers handy such as a plumber, electrician, roofer, and PuroClean. 4. Protect pipes, fittings, and appliances against freezing with insulation or heat strips. 5. Set your thermostat no lower than 55 degrees. 6. Before leaving turn off your water heater. (See owner’s manual for procedures.) 7. Service sump pump to ensure proper operation. Adding a backup power source is prudent. Regardless of the circumstances ‚ - frozen or leaking pipes or any water damage, fire/smoke damage, biohazard remediation or mold remediation - call your local PuroClean office, the Paramedics of Property Damage. For all property damage situations, these professionals are standing by to mitigate the loss preventing further damage and will then provide restoration services to return the property to a pre-loss condition as quickly and professionally as possible.

A Delicious Approach to Weight Loss, Healthy Eating

W

eight loss tops the to-do list for many of us, especially at this time of year when thoughts turn to the holidays, resolutions, vacation and even the looming swimsuit season. “Perhaps it’s not so surprising that weight loss is the No. 1 New Year’s resolution year after year,” said Rene Ficek, registered dietitian and nutrition expert for Seattle Sutton’s Healthy Eating (SSHE). “According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), about one-third of adults 20 years of age and older are overweight and another 35.7 percent are obese. And we know being overweight has far-reaching effects, often playing a role in the development of diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, kidney disease, stroke and more.” “Good intentions, like a New Year’s resolution, or setting a personal goal of losing 10 pounds in the next five months, are definitely a great start, but they need to be backed by a solid plan of how to accomplish them,” Ficek continued. The many challenges of healthy eating Thoughts about losing weight and eating right collide as many people have misconceptions about good nutrition, believing healthy food isn’t appetizing, too time consuming to prepare and that nutrition facts are just too difficult to manage. It’s true that portion control, counting calories, fat and sodium, and ensuring an overall well-balanced meal can be overwhelming. That’s why Seattle Sutton, a registered nurse, founded SSHE nearly 30 years ago - to provide consumers with a convenient way to eat healthfully, lose weight and address other health issues with freshly prepared, nutritionallybalanced meals. At SSHE the calories are counted, portions are controlled, meals are freshly prepared - not frozen or shelf stable - and always include fresh fruits and vegetables. Fat, sodium, sugar,

(Family Features)

cholesterol and other nutrition factors are taken into consideration in the 1200 and 2000 calorie regular meals, and the 1500 calorie vegetarian meal option. Imagine, the only reason to visit the supermarket is to purchase fat-free milk to accompany the meals. As for cooking skills, they are not required. Items that need to be heated can be done in the microwave, conventional oven or toaster. Delicious, satisfying options Those looking for a more healthful approach to eating will love the variety of foods the plan offers.

For example, how does a meal of spinach Florentine-filled jumbo shells, topped with savory tomato-pesto sauce and cheese, with a baby spinach salad and a wheat breadstick sound for dinner tonight? Or, how about a breakfast of baked French toast with fruit and nut topping, and a fresh vegetable fajita with a side of black beans for lunch? Meals can be ordered online or via a toll free call. They are available for delivery nationwide and in some areas of the country, can be picked up at convenient retail locations. To learn more, visit www.seattlesutton.com or call 1-800-442-3438.

SIMPLE STEPS TO PERFECT SLOW-COOKER MEALS The slow cooker captures the essence of the season with the first sniff of simmering comfort food. Convenient, economical and versatile, slow cookers are becoming popular again. Ginny Beam, founder of the Ginny’s catalog, offers these tips for preparing perfect slow-cooker meals. • Plan ahead. If you want to use your slow cooker first thing in the morning, cut and trim meat, chop vegetables, measure out dry ingredients and prepare sauce the night before; then refrigerate ingredients in separate containers. Don’t refrigerate in the slow-cooker insert, as a cold insert takes too long to heat up, affecting cooking time and, potentially, food safety. • Check your temperature. For safety, food being cooked needs to reach 140 F. If you’re at home while your meal is cooking, use a meat thermometer to check that food temperature is at least 140 degrees, after four hours of cooking on low. • Use cheaper cuts of meat. Not only do you save money, but these cuts are actually better suited to slow cooking, because they have less fat. Fat causes slow-cooker meals to cook too quickly, and can have an unpleasant texture.

opeye trumps Bugs Bunny - at least for your eyes. An overwhelming majority of Americans - 89 percent - identify carrots as the best food to eat to ensure healthy eyes but far fewer, 32 percent, know that spinach can help support their vision too, according to a survey by Kelton/DSM Nutritional Products. Move over carrots and beta-carotene, there are other foods and nutrients that appeal to eye health. Dr. Michael Roizen, author and co-founder of RealAge.com, provides a brief tutorial on the best nutrients for eye health. Lutein and zeaxanthin - The same survey found that less than half of Americans (41 percent) are familiar with lutein and only 6 percent of Americans are familiar with the nutrient zeaxanthin. Of the 600 known carotenoids, these are the only two that are found in the retina of the eye. Eat dark leafy greens (like spinach) and eggs and you’re on your way to incorporating lutein and zeaxanthin into your daily diet. While there is no established recommended dietary allowance (RDA) for lutein and zeaxanthin, the American Optometric Association recommends 10 mg per day of lutein and 2 mg per day of zeaxanthin. The recently published AREDS 2 (Age-Related Eye Disease Study 2) was launched to determine whether a combination of key nutrients - including vitamins C and E, lutein, zeaxanthin, beta-carotene and omega-3s - can further reduce the risk of progression from the common dry macular degeneration to advanced age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Secondary analysis showed that the group receiving lutein and zeaxanthin versus those not taking lutein and zeaxanthin, had a 9 percent risk reduction for progression to advanced AMD. Vitamin E - This essential vitamin, found in oils, wheat germ and peanuts, is an antioxidant that supports eye health. It may be difficult to get the recommended daily amount of vitamin E through diet alone - 15 mg/day for anyone older than 14. For example, to get 15 mg of vitamin E, you would need to eat one cup of peanuts that comes with about 827 calories. You can also get this vitamin in foods such as spinach, salmon and walnuts. But, if you’re not eating foods rich in these nutrients on a daily basis, consider adding supplements specifically formulated for eye health. Some of these supplements include Ocuvite, i-Caps and Centrum Specialist Vision. Check with your physician before starting any supplement program. Roizen’s quick tips on how you can help support the health of your eyes include:

TIPS AND TRICKS FOR BUSY PARENTS ON THE GO (BPT)

P

arents are the ultimate multi-taskers. But with today’s busy schedules, they can always use a little help - especially when it comes to providing their kids with quality, nutritious snacks.

More than half of the parents felt there’s one thing even more critical than diapers and sippy cups when they’re out and about with kids - a snack, according to the Tree Top’s Snacks On-The-Go Survey. And four in five parents admit their kids influence snack choices. “As parents, we strive to give our kids the best, but we need to make it easier on ourselves because we’re so busy,” says Erika Brown, Tree Top’s mom expert and blogger at Chic Shopper Chick. “When I’m on the go with my kids, I need convenient, mess-free, nutritious snacks that my kids love and as a parent, I feel good about.” For those times when it seems like there aren’t enough hours in a day, Brown, who knows that juggling life with two small children is not a light task, reveals some of her tips and tricks for busy parents who are constantly on the go. • Pick out tomorrow’s outfits tonight.-Pull out all of the clothes that your kids will need for the next day and set them in designated areas so everyone can wake up and get dressed before breakfast - without any help from you. Don’t forget to include shoes and socks - nothing is worse than not being able to find a misplaced sneaker 15 minutes before your kids head out the door. • Pack lunches on the weekends.-On Sundays, pull out everything that you need to make lunches and pack them into individual bags. Throw in a nutritious, whole fruit snack that has no sugar added, like Tree Top Apple Sauce Pouches, a bag of veggie sticks, a bottle of water, and a few cookies and stash it in the pantry. That way, all you have to do in the morning is make sandwiches and add the contents of one bag of snacks into their lunch boxes before sending them on their way. • Wake up an hour before your kids do. Waking up an hour before your kids gives you time to shower (in peace, without small children banging on the shower door), get dressed in something other than sweatpants, drink your coffee, finish making lunches and just generally be a happy human being. • Keep a stash of emergency items in your car. Use a little basket for convenient and portable items you need on-the-go, such as wet wipes (these aren’t just for babies!), tissues, a change of clothes for each child, bottles of water, non-perishable and mess-free snacks like Tree Top Apple Sauce Pouches, a small blanket that works for picnics when someone is “freezing,” and bandages.• Make easy dinners or give yourself permission to order take out. Make full use of your crockpot for one-dish meals and throw together a quick salad to go with it. Or, just give yourself permission to order in. Kung Pao chicken, anyone? TIME FOR AN INSURANCE CHECK-UP By Staff Writer State Farm™ Employee

W

hen was the last time you reviewed your insurance coverage? Just as getting an annual medical check-up is a sensible way to maintain your health, reviewing your insurance policies annually can provide peace of mind and may save you money. As you review your policies, here are some questions to keep in mind:

Does my car’s value affect my insurance? If you have a much older vehicle, look up its value online to see if carrying collision and comprehensive coverage is still cost-effective. If the car’s book value is low, it might not make sense to maintain comprehensive and collision coverage. What else can I do to lower my rates? If you increase your deductible, you can substantially reduce your monthly premiums.

Homeowners Insurance Life Insurance Does my coverage keep up with current rebuilding costs? If your home sustains serious damage due to a fire or a severe storm, does your policy cover rebuilding costs? If not, you might want to consider increasing your coverage Does my recent home renovation affect my coverage? If you have added square footage to your home recently, its value may have changed. Check with your insurance agent about increasing your coverage Does my policy cover new purchases? If you bought a new appliance or computer over the last year, make sure your policy covers replacement costs due to a fire or theft When was the last time I had my luxury items appraised? If you have expensive items such as jewelry, furs, coins, artwork, and antiques that have not been appraised recently, you might want to consider doing so. Having up-to-date insurance can help take some of the sting out of replacement costs in case of theft or damage. How can I lower my premiums? If your premiums are too high, consider raising your deductible. A higher deductible could lower your premiums, but will also make you more responsible for a greater portion of each covered loss. Auto Insurance My teen recently got a driver’s license. How does that affect my auto insurance? If your teen is now driving, let your agent know and be prepared for your family auto insurance premiums to rise. If your teen stays on your insurance, it is still cheaper than purchasing a separate policy. But keep in mind that insurers may offer discounts to high school and college students who maintain a B average and complete driver-safety program. Students who complete a www.teendriving.statefarm.com/road-to-safety/ safe-driving/graduated-driver-licensing (GDL) program may get a lower rate. Can joining a carpool help lower my rates? By driving less, you can lower your auto premiums because you are putting fewer miles on your vehicle per year.

10 RENEW

JANUARY 2014

We’ve just had a baby. Should I increase my life insurance coverage? Purchasing more life insurance can help cover the costs of your child growing up, if something unexpected should happen to you. Does my recent marriage affect my life

insurance? If you have recently gotten married, you might want to increase your life insurance coverage or change the beneficiaries on your policy. Having more life insurance could make your family’s future even more secure. How does my new job/layoff affect my coverage? If you recently got a better paying job and are planning to expand your lifestyle (a new home, a bigger car, etc.), then getting more life insurance might be a good idea. If your life insurance policy was tied to your old job, you might want to consider starting a new policy that suits your current needs. How much life insurance do I currently need? To find out how much life insurance you might need, or for details on cost, coverage, and limitations see your State Farm Agent.

TIPS FOR KEEPING YOUR HOUSE WARM WITHOUT BURNING A HOLE IN YOUR POCKET

T

he winter months mean celebrating the holidays, reconnecting with family and friends and planning your resolutions for the New Year. They can also mean a sharp increase to your monthly heating bill in order to stay warm and comfortable. The tips below will help you make sure more of your money stays in your pocket. • Close the doors to rooms that are not in use. This allows the heat to circulate within a smaller area. Your furnace will have an easier time maintaining the temperature and you’ll notice the benefit on your energy bill. • Cover your windows. Small cracks or gaps in your windows can create drafts and cold air hits your windows and leaves them cold to the touch, transferring those frigid temperatures inside. Prevent that cold from coming into your home by sealing your windows. This simple procedure takes only minutes and will have a dramatic effect on your heating bill. And don’t forget that heavy weight curtains can also help keep drafts out. • Check your insulation. Many homes, especially older homes, are vulnerable to cold temperatures because they lack sufficient insulation. Insulation is commonly found in the attic but it also exists in any outer wall. If you are concerned your home may be poorly insulated, you can check the insulation levels yourself or you can hire a qualified home energy auditor who will check your insulation as part of his overall energy assessment. • Invest in a heat pump. Investing in a duct-free heat pump system is the perfect solution. Duct-free products like the Art Cool Premier Single Zone offer high efficiency, precise temperature control, , ultra-quiet sound level, stylish design and best of all, they provide effective heating down to -13 F outdoor air temperature all without sacrificing aesthetics. The Art Cool Premier pump is available in both 9,000 and 12,000 BTU/h models offering you the perfect pump for any size room.

Though HE models typically cost more upfront, consumers can save money over the life of the product because they use less energy and water. HOME CARE HELPS FAMILY CAREGIVERS BEAT DEPRESSION their loved one is doing. This nonstop fretting can increase stress and depression. What a difference it makes to know that their loved one could get help if a fall were to occur ... has assistance getting to the bathroom … and is not sitting isolated at home. In-home caregivers provide supportive care for clients who have Alzheimer’s disease and other dementia. Studies show that depression levels are highest in family caregivers whose loved one is living at home with alzheimers disease . Dealing with the day-to-day issues of caring for a person with dementia is very stressful. In-home caregivers provide supervision, hygiene support and solutions for dealing with difficult behaviors such as wandering, aggression and sleep disturbances.

T

oday, nearly one-third of all Americans— that’s more than 45 million of us—are providing care for an elderly or disabled loved one. Caregiving can be tremendously rewarding. It is an integral part of human nature to take care of those we love. But these rewards often are accompanied by stress and anxiety. For many caregivers, the best “prescription” is to get some help with their caregiving tasks! Lessening the workload can overcome the negative health effects of caregiving and allow caregivers to focus on the rewards. An October 2013 study from Johns Hopkins University even showed that when caregivers don’t feel overburdened, caregiving actually may be correlated with longer life! Dr. David L. Roth reported that taking care of a loved one offers a self-esteem boost that is good for emotional health—if the caregiver’s workload is “done at manageable levels.” Says Roth, “If highly stressful situations can be avoided or managed effectively, caregiving may actually offer some health benefits for both the care recipients and the caregivers, including reduced risk of death for those providing care.” It is worthwhile to make a plan for lowering the workload and associated stress. Caregivers first should learn all they can about their loved one’s condition and about resources that are available in the community. Can friends lend a hand? What help is available from government and volunteer organizations? What local adult day centers, assisted living and long-term care facilities offer respite care? For many families, professional in-home care supplements family-provided care in ways that allow family caregivers to tend to their own health and needs. In-home care supports the emotional well-being of caregivers across the spectrum: In-home caregivers can be there when caregivers can’t. With a skilled, reliable caregiver in the home, family are able to work, play, exercise, attend to their own healthcare appointments, and enjoy the many other mood-boosting activities that tend to fall by the wayside as their loved one’s care needs increase. Professional inhome care supplements provide companionship,

supervision, nutritious meals, transportation, medication reminders, and assistance with following the healthcare provider’s recommendations. Professional in-home care normalizes family dynamics. When an elder parent, spouse or other loved one needs care, the changed relationship between the two can be emotionally difficult. Caregivers often feel overburdened even as they are dealing with their loved one’s grief over loss of independence and autonomy. When a professional in-home caregiver helps a client dress, bathe, shave, go to the toilet and perform other personal care tasks, this removes some of the emotional distress associated with the caregiving role—and preserves the care receiver’s sense of dignity, as well. In-home caregivers take care of challenging tasks. Did you know that many family caregivers today are dealing with their own age-related health problems? It may be unsafe for them to help their loved one walk or transfer from bed to chair, or to assist with other physically taxing handson care. Professional inhome caregiver are trained to perform these tasks safely. They also can do housekeeping, laundry and other tasks that keep all household members safe, and healthy, and in good spirits. HOW TO USE TEXTURE, COLORS AND ACCESSORIES TO BRING EMOTION TO YOUR HOME (BPT)

H

ome decor can convey many different emotions - from warmth and comfort on cold and dreary winter days to elegance and festiveness during the holiday season. The colors and materials you use set the stage; everything from the textures that appear in the accessories, the arrangement of the furniture and even how sound reverberates in a room.

It’s important to give your home new energy by occasionally redecorating one or more rooms. This is the perfect time of year to hire a designer and start looking at furniture and color schemes so your project is finished in time for spring and summer entertaining. Whether you’re working on the kitchen, bath or living area of your home, you might consider Porcelanosa, which offers some of the most advanced tile, kitchen and bath products that can enhance energy levels and emotions in the room you’re updating. The company has been around for more than 40 years - starting in a small village in Spain - and is always bringing avant-garde European design to homeowners and professionals around the world.

• Flooring - Colors, patterns and even sheen work together to create feelings in a room through flooring. Flooring options range from stone, marble, ceramic and wood - to name a few - and all of these come in a multitude of colors and patterns. Some homeowners choose to design their floors to blend in, creating a neutral backdrop for the rest of the room’s decorations. Others design the floor to be the focal point of the space, with dramatic colors. Work with a designer to determine what style of flooring will help create the feeling you want in your room. Bigger pieces allow for smaller grout joints thus facilitating maintenance and creating an increased perception of the space.

When redecorating a room to create a new emotion in your home, be sure to consider all the elements, from the floors to the ceiling, that harmoniously work together in developing the room’s ambiance. Here are some elements that can define a room’s emotion, whether you seek the look of a European industrial sleek getaway, or a rural rustic retreat.

Often these rooms are small; using wall mounted vanities and furniture with clean lines can help create a larger sense of the space. Geometric patterns also impart a sense of order to a room. The Porcelanosa Ciclo series capitalizes on this concept, with wall-hanging vanities, pivoting wall shelving units and raised sinks to illustrate geometric patterns highlighting excellent but out of view - storage.

Marla jumped and her bowling ball wobbled halfway down the lane before dropping into the gutter and rolling gently past the ten still-standing pins. She turned and glared at Carlos. “It’s not winning if you cheat.” He grinned. “You’ve seen my score. I don’t care about winning.” She grabbed the nine pound pink ball and plugged the three holes with her fingers. “Then why mess me up?” “Because you’re cute when you’re mad.” “I’m also accurate.” She turned on her heel, took several small steps forward and sailed the ball just right of center. Not a single pin remained standing. She spun, strutted to the collection of gaudy plastic chairs, and sat next to Jen.

Carlos stood and leaned close. “And you’re downright gorgeous when you’re winning.” She crossed her arms and rolled her eyes as he strolled to the line marking the lane. He tossed the ball, holding one leg back in the release position until it felled three pins. He gave Barrett a celebratory high five, eliciting another eye roll. Jen giggled. “Just throw your next ball so the rest of us can have our turns.” Carlos saluted her, knocked down five pins, turned, and pumped a triumphant fist in the air. “All right. Moving up in the world.” Jen got up and scooted past him. “Yeah, your three points ahead of me and none of us are near Marla. Why is it we keep coming back for this torture?” “Because you love me.” “Right, that must be it.” She glanced across the score station as Jen stepped up to the line. Carlos met her gaze, but didn’t flash his usual comedic grin. “Sure is.” Her stomach knotted and she glanced down. Why did he do that to her? “Anyone thirsty?” Barrett clasped Carlos’ shoulder. “I think our last place friend here just offered to go get a pitcher of soda.” “Hey, I’m ahead of your wife.” “Not any more. She just got six pins. So how about those drinks?” Carlos bowed at them and headed towards concession. Marla closed her eyes as Barrett took his turn.

Jen rested a hand on her arm. “You okay?” She nodded. She really had to figure out how to get Carlos to understand. She wasn’t interested in anything other than friendship. He wasn’t getting it, though. Maybe she’d have to give that up, too. Her heart ached at the thought, but she didn’t see any other way. b by Tracy Wainwright, Home Manager, Writer, Speaker, Conference Director

when you spend and how much you spend. Making note of all of those little purchases - a cup of coffee here or a gift store trinket there will help you see how quickly they add up. s more Americans make strides towards responsible spending and debt management, there are still ways to improve the control of family finances. According to a survey recently conducted by Bank of America, which asked respondents about their credit card usage, balance and rewards, less than half of cardholders always pay their entire credit card balance. With more than half of individuals carrying credit card debt, Jason Gaughan, card products executive for Bank of America, said to think about personal spending before taking on a credit card. “Credit cards provide consumers an efficient and protected way to make purchases,” said Gaughan. “They are more convenient than cash and they are incredibly useful in an emergency. The key to successfully managing your credit card account is to understand your budget and stick to a plan that works for you when borrowing. You want a card with a rewards program that fits your lifestyle and how you manage your finances. If you typically carry a balance, look for a card that has low interest and reinforces good payment practices.” Along with these practices, there are other ways to promote good spending and personal finance habits, such as: Limit Number of Credit Cards According to the survey, three out of 10

respondents carried four or more credit cards. Limiting the number of cards you own can help limit your spending and increase the likelihood you can pay above the minimum balance. Before you start cutting up your plastic, remember having more than one credit card can have merits. If you need money for an emergency, the immediate buying power of a credit card can be a lifesaver. Try a card with no annual fee and a generous credit line to cover unexpected expenses. One idea is to have three cards: one in a safe place at home for emergencies and two with you at all times. Reap the Rewards With so many rewards programs available for credit card holders, it’s important to do your homework so you can cash in on things your family really needs. While some credit cards will offer rewards to use at your favorite hotels and airlines, others will give you special discounts for the purchases you make on a frequent basis. The most popular of these programs is cash back for spending. Some cards, such as the BankAmericard Cash Rewards credit card, let you earn more cash back where you spend the most money, like gas stations and grocery stores. The BankAmericard Better Balance Rewards credit card helps customers responsibly manage their credit card balance. Whatever rewards you are seeking, there is likely to be a card suitable for you. Track Spending Habits Now If you’ve been lax about keeping track of your spending, take the first step towards tracking as soon as possible. Include info on where you spend,

Evaluate All Debts Many carry debts beyond credit cards, including student loans, car payments and mortgages. While some may consider these types as necessary debts, it is important to keep track of the balance due for each as well as the interest rate you are paying. According to the survey, when respondents were asked what they would do with $1,000, nearly half (44 percent) revealed they would pay off debt. Evaluate your debts and decide which ones have the highest interest rates. Making it a priority to pay down these debts first will save you more money in the long run. Create a Budget It’s never too soon to put yourself in control of your money and stop letting it control you. A budget will give you financial peace of mind and it can help you stretch the income you have. First, write down the financial goals you want to achieve in the next few years and the ones you want to accomplish for the long term. Then, gather all of the purchasing information for the household and categorize each type of spending. Divide your expenses into fixed expenses (those that stay the same from month to month, such as a mortgage payment or cable television bill) and variable ones (those that may change, such as fuel bills or entertainment). Be sure to also set aside some money for personal savings and an emergency fund. Once you’ve calculated your income and expenses a month ahead of time and set your budget, you can focus on the most important part - adhering to the plan. Find ways to decrease spending. Adopt just one new way of trimming expenses each week and you’ll find your overhead shrinking fast. Though you may not be on-point every month, the simple act of tracking and communicating your family’s finances will be a huge step forward in your quest towards responsible spending. STAY ON TREND THIS WINTER SEASON

A

s we head into the cold winter months, there is no need to sacrifice your style for warmth. This year, incorporate on-trend looks from the runway into your wardrobe to keep your look fashion-forward throughout season. Here are five fantastic looks for fall and winter from celebrity stylist, Cristina Ehrlich. 1. Men’s suit styling Menswear is no longer reserved for the boys as women around the world are adapting men’s suit styles and making them their own. This trend embodies looks inspired by Savile Row - the famous street in London known for tailoring the attire of some of the world’s most famous men. “Patterns like herringbone and pinstripes are central to this look,” says Ehrlich. “While traditional tailoring for men - like the haberdashery cut - is being refreshed with a feminine silhouette.” 2. Neo-punk The neo-punk look channels the likes of Vivienne Westwood, Sid and Nancy, and singer/songwriter, Siouxsie. Add a little edge to your wardrobe with tartan, vinyl, chains, studs and spikes. Metals make ideal neo-punk accessories. Ehrlich recommends stacking a few customizable PANDORA bracelets and rings in mixed metals for a fashion-forward look that is all your own.

RENEW: What is your inspiration? Janice: My inspiration truly comes from the things that God is doing through this ministry. Like, every single day (and I hear this from my father as well at the age of 92), I mean every single day you sort of wake up and say God what do you have for me today? Start the day with this perspective of expecting God has blessings for you for that day. It’s just a matter of us walking through the day with that expectation, that anticipation and seeing what God does. RENEW: What do you like to do in your spare time? Janice: I love being around the water and water sports. RENEW: What do you like about being a part ICM? Janice: What I love is being a part of International Cooperating Ministries because we have opportunities every single day to be purposeful and to know that we are being used by God to make a difference on this planet and that is a powerful opportunity. You can visit ICM’s website at www.icm.org If you would like to reach Janice Rosser Allen, you can call the ICM office in Hampton at 757.827.6704.

3. Tone-on-tone Color remains big for winter, with tone-on-tone trending on and off the runway. To pull off this look, choose an outfit in a rich hue and then bring it to life by mixing in complementary shades and textures. For example, an emerald green top is enhanced with accessories in various shades of bright green. “Jewelry in harmonious shades can perfect the tone-on-tone look with minimal effort,” adds Ehrlich. 4. Renaissance fabric mixing This season’s hottest designers are showing a reincarnation of 18th and 19th century patterns blended with colorful, contemporary fabrics. This Renaissance inspired look is far from what you’ll find at a medieval fair. To incorporate this trend, Ehrlich likes to pair a long, full skirt with a cropped cardigan. “Have fun mixing fabrics to create a one-of-a-kind look,” she says. “Paisley and pinstripes? Of course!”

“Sensitive Eyes? Try our NEW Certified Organic Mascara!”

5. Mid-century The sultry, feminine looks associated with film-noir are brought to life with this runway trend. Celebrate classic beauty with nipped-waist tops and flowing, billowy skirt-suits. Complete your outfit with accessories - try necklaces that mix sterling silver, 14 karat gold and sparkling stones.
