4 QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE PURCHASING A NEW HOME
B
uying a new house is an exciting time in your life. Because it is one of the most important investments you’ll make for yourself and your family, there are many important factors to consider. Before making a purchase, take these four questions into account. Having the answers will allow you to enjoy your new home now and in the years ahead. 1. What exterior color palette speaks to you? Your home is a reflection of your personality and can be an extension of your lifestyle. When buying or designing a new house, contemplate its curb appeal. First impressions matter, so it’s important to consider architectural style, exterior color and details like trim and landscaping. Coordinate the trim, soffits and doors with the primary siding color for a polished look. To help, look to popular and complementary color combinations developed by the color professionals at
Ramada
James Hardie: www.jameshardie.com/pdf/ colorplus-color-combinations.pdf. 2. Is your home protected from environmental elements? With today’s everchanging climate, extreme weather is a reality in all corners of the country. From hurricanes and blizzards to wind and wildfires, select siding and trim products that help protect your home. Consider your options carefully. Vinyl siding can melt and wood is susceptible to rot. James Hardie siding products are engineered specifically for climate zones, so whether you live in a cold, wet, hot or dry part of the country, you can choose the siding that will stand up to weather conditions in your area. 3. Is your new home built using sustainable products? Green building is popular these days, in part because an energy-efficient home can save a homeowner money on heating and cooling bills. By
choosing a home clad in 100 percent sustainable and efficient material, you’re consuming less energy and reducing your environmental footprint. 4. What maintenance will your new home require? Selecting or buying a home made with low-maintenance building materials can lower the chances of large ticket home repairs, or prevent them altogether. Wood siding and trim requires frequent repainting or replacement, and vinyl may warp, melt or fade. Considering durable and longer-lasting fiber cement siding can minimize the need for repairs. Additionally, purchasing a product with a strong warranty is a great way to maximize and protect your investment.

n a variety of situations, portable generators can supply temporary or remote electric power. From emergencies to recreational and construction activities, portable generators become a welcome addition to any instance when power is needed, yet not readily available. For outdoor events such as tailgating, hunting and camping, an inverter generator is a quiet, reliable option. These temporary power sources can be used to power televisions, radios, small appliances, fans and space heaters. Before using one of these helpful devices at your next event, there are a few things to remember in order to keep friends and family safe. “Portable generators are helpful in various situations, but the dangers of carbon monoxide poisoning caused by their improper use are very real,” said Joe Harding, representative for Portable Generator Manufacturers’ Association (PGMA). “The educational efforts of PGMA, including the Safety First campaign, are focused on educating the public on the proper selection and safe usage of portable generators.” Essential safety tips Generator exhaust contains high levels of carbon monoxide, a deadly gas that is tasteless, colorless and odorless. For any situation which requires temporary power to be available, consider the following preparation and safety tips:
partially-enclosed spaces, even if using fans or opening doors and windows. Carbon monoxide can quickly build up in these spaces and linger for hours, even after the generator has shut off. • Only operate a portable generator outside, far away from windows, doors and vents to reduce the risk of carbon monoxide gas accumulating and potentially being drawn toward occupied spaces. • Install battery-operated carbon monoxide alarms or plug-in alarms with battery backup according to the manufacturer’s instructions. Smoke alarms cannot detect carbon monoxide gas. • Always place your portable generator downwind and point the engine exhaust away from occupied spaces. • The symptoms of low-level carbon monoxide
poisoning can be similar to those caused by other illness such as cold, flu or food poisoning. If you suspect you or a family member are experiencing any of these symptoms due to carbon monoxide poisoning, get outside to fresh air immediately and call 911 for emergency medical attention. • Always refer to the generator owner’s manual for further information about safe operation and potential hazards. Regardless of the events requiring the use of portable generators, safety precautions should be considered in order to reduce risks of carbon monoxide poisoning. The primary reason your skin becomes dry is due to damage in the skin barrier. Damage occurs when the outer layers of skin lose their ability to maintain normal moisture levels, which is aggravated by several external factors. “Fast-relief is important but long-term, it is extremely important to also repair the skin barrier,” says Dr. Ranella Hirsch, a Fellow of the American Academy of Dermatology (FAAD). “From the skin products you use to the temperature of your shower, many important factors contribute to dry skin.” Here are five easy tips to help keep dry skin at bay:

1. Stop stripping your skin: Many skin care products contain harsh ingredients that remove your skin’s natural oils, leaving it dry and flaky. Hirsch recently partnered with the global beauty brand Dove to help address these issues. “Many women suffer from dry skin,” says Hirsch. “I worked with Dove to help create the new Dove DermaSeries, a full range of premium cleansers and creams that I can recommend to my patients as a beautiful way to alleviate dry and compromised skin symptoms.” 2. Turn down the temperature: If you have dry or compromised skin, it is important to use gentle cleansers when bathing, stay in water for less time and softly pat dry. Frequently showering and bathing in hot water can aggravate dry skin so it is important that you moisturize frequently, ideally using an intensely hydrating, rich cream. 3. Be gentle: If you have rough patches on your skin, exfoliating gently can help soften and smooth them out. After your shower, use an emollient-rich balm that contains a blend of natural oils which will help repair and protect severely dry skin and very rough patches. You may want to consider a balm such as Dove DermaSeries Intense Repairing Rough Patch Treatment, which softens rough, thick patches of skin on areas such as knees, elbows and heels. 4. Travel smoothly: Whether arriving by train, plane or automobile, travel can strip skin of the moisture it needs. When traveling, remember to stash a gentle cleanser in your carry-on so you do not have to rely on hotel freebies, which are often harsh on skin. 5. Avoid itchy clothing: Some fabrics, such as wool, tend to worsen itchiness. Wearing either cotton or natural fiber clothing can help minimize the feeling of dry, itchy skin. By following these simple tips, your skin is poised to look and feel beautiful.

Her Broken Places
BY TRACY WAINWRIGHT Marla opened the refrigerator again. Nothing had changed. Nothing called out her name. She was hungry, but couldn’t decide what to eat. She pushed the door closed. Truth was, her mind was focused on Kimberly. The poor girl had certainly gotten herself into a tough spot. Well, not all of it was her fault. She didn’t choose to have parents who didn’t know how to love and care for her. She sighed. There was no easy answer. At least by the time Kimberly had left their session she’d seemed more calm and had a plan to tell the baby’s father. She wouldn’t guess at what his reaction would be, though. He seemed like an upstanding guy from all Kimberly had said, but
the unexpected often brought out hidden negative qualities in people. Moving to the cabinet again, she opened the door and reviewed her options. Macaroni and cheese. Not the healthiest option, but quick, easy, and comforting. Five minutes later, she sat with the warm bowl in hand. Tears filled her eyes. She didn’t understand how someone like Kimberly ended up with a baby she wasn’t ready for, nor sure she wanted, when Marla would never be able to have one. It wasn’t fair. She choked back the lump in her throat and shook her head. She would not go there. She’d given up hope of having her own family long before. It was her reality and God had blessed her in many other ways. He had other plans for her. She was confident in that. Still, though, it didn’t stop the ache in her heart that snuck up every once in a while. She dug into her bowl of pasta and clicked on the TV. The national news had just begun, so she settled into watching updates on the tornado damage in Kansas. Watching that, she couldn’t dwell on her own small issues. These peoples’ lives had been completely devastated. As she watched and ate, the phone rang. The number wasn’t familiar. Probably some telemarketer. She muted the TV and picked up. “Hello?” “Miss Scriminger?” “Yes?” “Hi, I’m Tami Sumner with the Relieving Disaster organization. We’re mobilizing teams to
serve in the wake of the tornadoes in Kansas. We’ve reviewed your application and would like to invite you to be a part of the counseling team.” She put her bowl down. Her heart raced. Never had she imagined her application would have been picked, especially so soon after applying. “Okay. What, um, when would you need me?” “Tomorrow, if possible. We’ll need to do a day of training and then get you to hit the ground running. As I’m sure you’ve seen, there’s a great need.” Tomorrow. There was no way. Unless she went after work. But then what? “And how long would you need me?” “A week. Two if possible. The counselors are to help people get through the initial trauma, but that could take a couple weeks.” Marla had tons of vacation. But she also had clients scheduled. Could she really abandon them? But she wouldn’t be, really. Just shifting them a couple weeks. She sat forward. This. This is what God had planned for her right now. She knew it with every fiber of her being. “Okay. I’ll make it work. What do I do first?”

TIPS FOR A
Healthier Home
(Family Features)
E
very household has its honey-do list, but inevitably you’re not always going to have time to cross off every project on the list. “Keep your ‘honey-do’ list manageable. Move long-term projects to the end and bump up the jobs that will help make your home healthier,” said Mike Holmes, renowned and trusted contractor on HGTV and healthy home expert. “When you know you’re making a positive impact on your family’s health and safety, doing those jobs is easy.” The Four C’s Holmes also recommends following the four “C’s” for a healthier honey-do list: Check • Exhaust Fans Bathroom and kitchen exhaust fans play an important role in reducing moisture in the home. Conduct a simple test by turning on the exhaust fan and placing a tissue up to the vent to check the strength of your vent fans. The fan should be strong enough to hold the tissue in place. Fans not working properly are ineffective at controlling smoke and humidity, and allow fumes, moisture and pollutants to circulate and settle throughout the home. • Flue Pipes Inspect flue pipes - also known as stove pipes, smoke pipes and chimney connectors - on a quarterly basis for cracks or holes. Cracks in the pipes allow fumes and gases like carbon monoxide to enter the home rather than be funneled outdoors. If the pipes are cracked or corroded, call a professional to inspect them and possibly replace the pipes, as it may be a sign of a larger problem. Change • Air Filters

Use a Filtrete Ultra Allergen Reduction Filter to help clean the air in the home by removing airborne particles, such as mold spores, dust mite debris, bacteria and viruses from the air passing through the filter. Remember to change it at least every three months or more frequently if you have pets, burn candles often or are doing home improvement projects. The American Lung Association says that, poor indoor air quality in the home can cause headaches, dry eyes, nasal congestion, nausea and fatigue. • Batteries Test your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors every month, and change the batteries at least twice a year. Don’t wait until the detectors are chirping, as that sound usually means the batteries are about to die and your family will no longer be protected. Remember, you can sometimes see smoke in the home but you can’t see or smell carbon monoxide. Control • Moisture Inspect your home using a moisture meter to locate hidden areas containing moisture that you can’t see with the naked eye. Mold thrives in areas of the home where moisture is present and can cause hay fever-type symptoms, such as sneezing, runny nose, red eyes and skin rashes, according to the
Clean • Roof Gutters Regularly check gutters for leaves, pests and other excess debris and clean them out using a rake and hose at least twice a year. (Be careful not to push water underneath your shingles.) Neglected gutters may not drain properly and pose a risk of detaching and leaking water into the home. In addition to structural damage, the leaks provide breeding grounds for mold to grow in areas like ceilings and basements. • Garage and Basement Clutter Remove trash and clutter from around the home and be sure not to let it build up for more than a few days. Unattended trash can be a breeding ground for pests and parasites that carry bacteria and viruses into the home. THE POWER OF BEING THANKFUL Tatrece Dunl ap Swann
N
ovember is the month where we traditionally celebrate Thanksgiving in this country, but as we look back on how this day has become just another shopping day, we have to look at ourselves. As we enter into what’s considered the ‘Holiday Season’, and before we allow ourselves to be caught up in the frenzy of it all with celebratory parties, themed affairs and gatherings, let us not forget to take a moment to extend gratitude and thanks for our many blessings. Thanksgiving Day has slowly transformed into America’s kickoff for the holiday shopping season, as retailers have push back their Black Friday sales into Thursday. It appears we’ve let the pressures from retailer’s need to boost sales impact what used to be a day set
aside to observe and spend with family. On-line gift buying has influenced the consumers the expectation that their favorite stores will offer the same flexible shopping experience. About 22 percent of consumers believe retailers’ Thanksgiving hours provide a fun activity for the family, but we’ve given no consideration to the worker who’d rather spend the day with their family. Having someone to choose between their family and their work isn’t a fair position to put the worker in, and it appears we’re living in an era where the idea that there’s a holiday that’s off limits has gone away. When did sales trump family values and time spent with loved ones? Life in itself is a blessing that many tend to take for granted, and this year there are some who have experienced great loss. Whether it’s
the loss of a loved one, employment or health challenges, this time of year should make us appreciate what and who we have in our lives all the more. So, even if you decide to indulge in the holiday season and all of it’s ‘excitement, because I plan to, I think there’s room to pause for just a moment to give thanks. Be deliberate in your time, look your loved ones in the eye, engage in a real conversation that doesn’t involve a mobile device, and make long lasting memories. Trust me, I know plenty of people this year who would give anything to spend just one more day. Happy Thanksgiving!

IT’S THE HOLIDAY SEASON ALREADY?
W
e are fast approaching the holiday season, and if you are like me, you are scratching your head because it seems like just yesterday we were starting the first day of school. Well, I am pleased to introduce to you a couple of great questions from some dedicated RENEW readers, who are also wondering how to best navigate the upcoming holiday season. Cheryl A.: I love the Ask a Teacher column. I have wanted to send a question in, but I wasn’t sure, if it would be picked. So, here goes…Even before Halloween, I have seen more and more Christmas decorations in the stores, and even though I love Christmas, I feel so manipulated and rushed into the season. Its almost like Halloween and Thanksgiving are just brushed aside completely. What’s more is that whenever I have to take my children into the store with me, I cringe because I already know that they are going to start asking for stuff. How do I deal with this knowing I have a kindergartener and first grader who are excited about Christmas? Mrs. Underwood: Thank you so much for your kind words and I am so happy that you have been enjoying the Ask a Teacher column. Please feel free to send in a question any time, and I am happy to answer it. If I can’t answer a question in the magazine, I usually send a personal reply to every email. Cheryl, from my family to yours, I wish you the happiest Thanksgiving ever, but I am not surprised by your question because it is one that many of us deal with, whether we have children or not. It is true, we all see the stores gearing up earlier and earlier for the Christmas and Hanukah shopping season and of course the dreaded Black Friday sales, but rest assured, your children are savoring the goodness of every holiday, especially while in school. Usually, the librarians will have books displayed for each holiday, and elementary school teachers will have various themed activities and lessons that represent the different holiday traditions celebrated around the world. Now, it is important that you also take the lead to start your own family traditions to celebrate the joys of autumn, such as picking out a family pumpkin, taking a hay ride, baking holiday treats, 10 RENEW NOVEMBER 2014
volunteering at a homeless shelter for Thanksgiving, or watching holiday favorites, such as “It’s the Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown” or a “Charlie Brown Thanksgiving.” But more importantly, talk as a family about what it means to be grateful and appreciative of what you already have as opposed to just wanting more. Kids nowadays see so much flashy junk on television that they think they want it all, but it is our job to show them that in most cases, they already have everything they need. Lastly, the next time you are in the store and your kids say they want a toy, tell them what I tell my two young kids…Santa can see all of us right now, so hold up the toy above your head so that he can get a good a look at it and maybe if you are good, he will decide
Mrs. Underwood: Laura, you have no idea that so many are dealing with the same dilemma right now. My school district as well as many others around the nation has banned certain foods and portions sizes in an effort to address health concerns. But there are still great things you can send in that will amaze the children. For example, you can scoop fresh fruit, like grapes, melon, and blueberries into a plain ice cream cones, make fruit and cheese kabobs, purchase holiday themed/individually wrapped pretzels, or send in non-edible treats, such as holiday themed stickers, pencils, or trinkets.
d Thank you to everyone who submitted a question or shared how much you have enjoyed the “Ask a Teacher” column. If you would like to submit a question, you can email me directly and confidentially at janicebellunderwood@gmail.com and your question could be featured in an upcoming issue of RENEW Magazine.
ARE YOU READY FOR 2014 FILING DEADLINES?
W
e are in the last quarter of the year a time when the leaves start to change colors and the smell of the holidays is in the air. A time when what is on the mine of employees, business owners and family are holiday plans and possible vacations. A time that we all want to just enjoy the wonderful autumn smells and observe the changes that are going around. Unfortunately, is that if we do not plan ahead, the stress is ever present when we return back to the office after a wonderful vacation, family gathering or New Years Party. If you’re a sole owner or a small business that has to juggle it all, then you are faced with figuring out all the documentation. If you’re a larger business then you may have a frustrated bookkeeper/accountant waiting on you to sign off on some documents. Oh and lets not forget that once the IRS begins to accept simple 1040 the phone starts to ring off the hung about their W2 because they want to file their taxes.
Avoid these unnecessary stresses, penalties and interest by setting up a plan. If you use a payroll service like ADP, Paychex or Payday, they ask that update your employee and vendor 1099 files by MidOctober to avoid mailing the W2’s to the wrong address. Is also should help guide you in starting to review the payroll reports (941, 940, VEC and state forms if required) to get head of the game. Even if you process payroll in house you should do the same. The deadline to mailing W2 is January 31st and for 1099 February 28th, however, there is a request to change the 1099 to January 31st as well so be prepared. What does it mean to be prepared…? Begin the review of the prior 941, the reported liabilities to what was actually deposited; in the fourth quarter you can catch it up. It does not save you from the penalty but at least the funds that are not yours are deposited before mailing out the W2s. Make sure that you have an updated W4 for each 1099 vendor. In this year alone MOR has seen 10 clients that did not confirm the iTin number or Social Security numbers so now they have to pay a fine for incorrect information. If you find any error then you know that you may have mistakes on the VEC reports, 940 reports and state filings. The goal is to begin the year-end review as soon as the last payroll is processed. Considering that most companies have to process payroll at least 2 days before payday it’s the perfect time to begin the reconciliation. In that way W2’s can be processed upon return after, hopefully, a wonderful New Years celebration. Please note that even if you use a service you need to review and compare, mistakes are made even in the automated system. The last thing we want to do is over pay for tax preparation so limit these two issues W2’s and 1099’s reconciliations that part of the year end process. We are on the countdown to the New Year so lets get prepared so that the expense of taking some time off is not clouded over by employees or vendors with unnecessary calls! KEEPING PRE-TEENS SAFE AS THEY GROW OLDER
L
ife changes a bit when school resumes in the fall. Traffic patterns become more regular, family schedules adjust and kids fill their hours with classes, homework and after-school activities. As children grow up, it can be difficult for parents to know how to stay connected and keep them safe. Parents always want to know their children’s schedules and locations, but they don’t necessarily always have to be present as their pre-teens go about their day-to-day activities. The following tips help parents keep track of their children without being overbearing.
and supervised. Pre-teens will like having a break from mom and dad once in a while, especially when around their friends.
2. Stay connected. Technology can help parents keep in contact with their children at all times of the day. TracFone Wireless is a low-cost way to provide your child with a cellphone and plan that gives him or her the technology they crave. You can also 1. Arrange a carpool. Carpooling is a pass down an older phone you are no great solution for many of the issues faced by parents of pre-teens. Scheduling longer using and set it up with a plan. This way your child can text you when he or a carpool with another trusted parent she gets to wherever they are going, call helps to free up your schedule, and it also lets you know your daughter is safe you after school to check with you about

changing plans or even email you a photo of a shirt they want to purchase to support the school team. This connection allows you to stay fully informed of your child’s whereabouts without having to actually be present, worry about a dropped call or not having signal. 3. Encourage activity planning. Maintaining a schedule is an important skill for all older kids to learn, and parents can encourage their pre-teens to start planning their own social calendar. Let your children know they are expected to keep you in the loop about what they are doing, who they will be seeing, where they are going and which parents will be attending. 4. Invite the friends over. Why not turn your home into the hang-out for all of your pre-teen’s friends? Some ways to do this include having plenty of food available, good entertainment options and a fun, comfortable space like a fire pit or a pool. This way you’ll know who’s hanging out with your children and where they are, all without making them uncomfortable. Take advantage of technological improvements and work with other parents to monitor their pre-teens, and try to avoid hovering over the youths’ shoulders. Put these tips to use this year so you can keep tabs on your children and make sure they are safe, without having to actually be there with them.

s you prepare for this season of celebrations, consider recipes that offer a fresh approach to the traditional holiday menu. With its sweet simplicity and vibrant color, a garnish featuring California grapes can make your meal presentation even more enticing. To thaw quickly, place it in the sink and cover with cold water, changing the water every half hour per pound. • Once the turkey has thawed, always refrigerate or cook immediately. • When you’re ready to cook, baste the bird with extra virgin olive oil. Place turkey with the breast up on a rack in a shallow roasting pan in an oven preheated to 325º∞F. Loosely cover turkey with foil to prevent over-browning. • The turkey is done cooking when the meat thermometer reads 180º∞F, or if the red stem on the pop-up timer is up and the drumstick feels soft or moves easily. • Always allow the bird to rest for at least 20 minutes for easy carving. • Present your turkey on a platter with a fresh and colorful garnish, such as California grapes. “Vintage dinnerware continues to be one of the trendiest design elements in the tabletop industry and those patterns are some of our best sellers,” says Robbins. “Why buy a reproduction when the real thing is readily available? Search your mother or grandmother’s china cabinet to find some of the great retro patterns. Add your own point of view when you mix and match contemporary designs to create a modern look. It’s really simple to add an accent plate, or a stand-out charger in this season’s colors to update your table for fall entertaining.” Figural pieces, such as leaf shaped plates and serving pieces are very popular this fall. Many manufacturers are offering colorful accent pieces with favorites including turkey, fall leaves and pumpkin motifs. “You can use pumpkins as a strong design element through Thanksgiving,” Griffith suggests. “Pumpkins made of glass, ceramic and lightweight resin are big sellers in the store as we head into the season. Mix with the real thing to easily create a great centerpiece.” As the season changes, so does the way you’re entertaining. Gatherings may be more casual as friends and family get together around the television for the big game or by the fire pit on the patio.
“Appetizer size plates and individual dip bowls are great for finger foods and condiments, says Robbins. “These smaller pieces are both popular and affordable. Plus it’s fun to mix shapes, colors or motifs. Mix and match your favorite team colors for the big game or choose individual Thanksgiving themed plates for celebrations tied to turkey day.” Still looking for more fall tabletop ideals? Help is just a click away. This team is now using Facebook to share decorating tips and solutions. “We love partnering with our customers to solve their design dilemmas,” says Robbins. “We’re thrilled when people reach out to us and ask questions on Replacements’ Facebook page. Our team is having a lot of fun connecting with our customers and we encourage people to visit our page, ask questions, like us and share us with their friends; we get so many great design challenges this way.” Once the team receives a question, they create multiple mix and match options, photograph these table settings then post the images online for the public to see and share.

IS THE PRESENCE OF INDOOR MOLD CONTAMINATION A THREAT TO OUR HEALTH? Part 1 of 3
T
he purpose of this article is not to hype the current hysteria regarding mold. One thing none of us needs these days is more anxiety. We intend to offer useful information that will help educate, and to explain that mold is not an uncontrollable monster. The EPA reports that health effects from indoor air pollution covers the range of acute and chronic effects, that cover the entire catalog of maladies including headache, nose bleeding, debilitating pains, fevers, cough, memory loss, depression, mood swings, anxiety, chronic fatigue, dizziness, eye, nose and throat irritation and chronic sinusitis. And you would be right in reflecting that this wasn’t much of a known problem several decades ago. The energy conservation efforts of the 1970’s and 80’s required that buildings have tighter construction, more insulation, airtight windows and doors, etc., all of which led to lower ventilation rates and the build-up of contaminants in the Living Space. The EPA conducted a study and released a report that indicated Americans spend 93% of their time indoors. So the control of indoor air pollution should be paramount for all of us. Mold in particular is one of these contaminants that has flourished with the improvements in building construction. Especially in areas of the country like Southeast Virginia, where the average reading for relative humidity outdoors can be in the 80% range annually. Yet, mold is one these contaminants that can be controlled relatively easily. As to how mold affects humans, mold toxicity can arise by inhaling mycotoxin-containing mold spores, or through skin contact with toxigenic mold. A Mayo Clinic study determined that 96% of all chronic sinusitis is an immune system response to fungus. In persons with an abnormal response to a particular species of mold, the body secretes chemicals to kill the fungus. These chemicals damage the lining of the sinus and nose, leading to bacterial infection and possibly the formation of polyps. There are, of course, millions of spores all around us everywhere we go, not just in our homes, but outdoors, at the office, in our cars, everywhere. The trick for us is to limit the number of spores and the kinds of mold that exist in our homes. If you suspect that you may be experiencing a physical reaction to the presence of mold, see your primary care physician with this concern first. Then call the Paramedics of Property Damage™ to attend to the health of your home. Mike O’Donnell and the mold remediation experts at PuroClean are trained and certified to effectively rid your property of the presence of fungus. HOW A TAPE MEASURE AND SCALE CAN SAVE YOUR CHILD’S LIFE
B
abies are measured and weighed frequently in the first few years of life so parents and pediatricians can be sure they are getting a healthy start. But as kids get older, many parents don’t know exactly how tall or heavy their children are. Knowing your child’s height and weight, and using the right car or booster seat when they travel, could save their life.
engineered to offer more protection than ever, anyone who drives a child needs to remember to use a booster seat until a seat belt alone fits safely. Safe Kids offers this easy tip: a child needs to be at least 57 inches tall (4 feet 9 inches) and weigh between 80 and 100 pounds to ride with just a seat belt.
Booster seats protect children who are too big for a car seat but too small for a seat belt. And yet, according to “Buckle Up: Booster Seats,” a new study released by Safe Kid Worldwide, an alarming number of parents are allowing kids to use a seat belt alone before they are big enough. The report, funded in part by a $2 million grant from the General Motors Foundation, surveyed parents of children ages 4 to 10 and found that seven in ten do not know that a child should be 57 inches tall to ride in a car without a booster seat. Furthermore, in practice, nine out of ten parents move a child from a booster seat to a seat belt too soon.
Motor vehicle crashes are the second-leading cause of death for children 4 to 10 years old in the U.S. In 2012, 340 children of this age died in motor vehicle crashes. A third of these children were riding without a restraint that could possibly have saved their lives. Booster seats can reduce the risk of serious injury by 45 percent compared to seat belts alone.
While car seats, booster seats and seat belts are
The report also found that carpooling can be a particularly risky time for small passengers. One in five parents whose children carpool say they “bend the rules” when driving, letting children ride without seat belts and without the car seat or booster seat they would normally use. And 61 percent of parents say they notice other carpool drivers bending the rules.
every time, in the right seat. This is important for everyone, both drivers and passengers. Make buckling up a habit starting when kids are young. • Remember: A child needs to be at least 57 inches tall (4 foot 9 inches) and weigh 80-100 pounds to ride with just a seat belt. Weigh and measure your child today. • Be confident that a car seat is installed properly. Learn more about car seat safety and find a car seat inspection event near you by visiting safekids.org.
