flowering pots or opening windows. The latest home decorating trend features natural elements in the textures and finishes of furniture and accessories, giving homeowners an elegant - and - often calming result of blending nature and home living into a beautiful space.
About to embark on your own remodel or home refresh? Be sure to explore how bringing natural elements into your decor can enhance the ambiance of the room, please call Chris at Chura Custom Interiors for an appointment today at 757.870.9112 From flooring to light fixtures and everything in between, Chura Custom Interiors can aid you in your selections to ensure a finished product you are sure to love.
The natural look is perfect for the bathroom. Robern vanities and mirrors featuring Digital Wood harness the warmth of six different wood species using high-definition scans that are printed on the backside of the glass surface. The result: an easy-to-maintain material that won’t be affected by the humidity or heat commonly found in bathrooms. “What’s genius about these new finishes from Robern is that they used the best technology to create a convincing representation of real wood that you couldn’t typically use in a bathroom,” says Elaine Griffin, New York interior designer and author of Design Rules. “Plus, the collection has so many wood prints that you can get one that matches your bathroom style.” Photo Courtesy of Chura Custom Interiors

HOW TO MAKE WORKING AT HOME WORK!
(BPT) orking at home is a growing popular trend. The 2010 U.S. Census reports 9.5 percent of the population spends at least one day a week working at home - an increase of more than 2 percent since 1997. Technology is making it easier for employees and self-employed workers to set up a home office and conduct business.
W

When deciding to set up an office at home, one challenge many workers face is determining what computer to use - or purchase. Apple and Windowsbased PCs are the two staples, and everyone has a preference on which system they prefer. Sometimes it’s the user interface of one over the other that’s preferred, and in other cases, how chosen programs perform on each platform determines what type of computer workers purchase. And often, workers just want to seamlessly blend in with the office environment, and purchase the same system for home.
• Custom glass shower and tub enclosures
With Parallels Desktop for Mac, the difficulty of choosing between the two platforms is obsolete. This software enables users to run all operating systems like Windows 8, Windows 7, Windows XP, Mac OS X, Google Chrome OS and more on a Mac without rebooting. This allows an at-home employee to easily switch between the system provided on work computers and the home computer, even if they’re running different operating systems.
• Custom mirrors
This allows at-home workers several benefits:
• Bath hardware (including ADA compliant hardware)
* If you have a Mac and a PC, then Parallels Desktop software can simply move your entire PC onto you Mac so you have everything on one computer. If you don’t have a PC, its wizard lets you simply add Windows and other operating systems to your Mac so you can do everything on one computer.

time, allowing you to work in a Mac program while using a Windows platform. * Copy and paste between documents running in both operating systems easily - which is not possible if you must reboot your Mac to change between OS X and Windows applications. Another challenge working-from home employees face is taking the business on the road. Those who are self-employed often don’t have the luxury of bringing business into the home office, and have to make the office mobile. This requires updating technology so email, documents and files can all be accessed from either a smartphone or tablet. Another option is to access your computer remotely, allowing you to do everything you’d be doing at home while away. Parallels Mobile for iPad and iPhone lets you remotely access and run all of your Mac and Windows files and applications when you’re on the go. One final challenge is being able to handle the business errands without having to leave the office - or home. Banking, setting up conference calls or ordering supplies can all be done electronically using websites and downloadable apps. This technology allows a home-worker to make business deposits, connect with clients and have supplies delivered to the door - without having to leave. Seamless connection is key to working at home, because any interruption in getting technology to work is lost time, and potentially lost business. Apps, using the same computer programs you’ve always used through Parallels Desktop for Mac and mobile devices will help any at home worker to keep all connections with the office and clients going strong. Mac users can download a free trial of the software at www.parallels.com/desktop.

shley Parker embraced Jen before she could get through the doorway. “Thank you so much. I’m so sorry for what happened to you, but I’m so grateful for the accident.” It had been two weeks and Jen still had a nightmare about the attack almost every night. But as soon as she awoke and opened her eyes, God filled her with peace and joy as she recited the verses in the book of James Barrett had pointed her to. ‘Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance must finish its work so that you will be mature and complete, not lacking anything.’ It also helped knowing those creeps were locked behind bars. “Thank you, Mrs. Parker. And thank you for letting me come see Natasha.” The blond woman stepped back and clasped her hands together. “Oh, she wouldn’t have it any other way. And you must be Barrett.” “Yes, Ma’am.” “Well, come on in. Natasha’s in the living room.” Jen and Barrett followed Mrs. Parker through the foyer and down a short hallway Jen spotted the little girl sitting on the sofa. She smiled to match the pint size greeting. “Miss Jennifer!” Natasha hopped up and ran to Jen, throwing her arms around her legs. “Hi, Natasha. I’m glad to see you’re feeling much better.” The six-year-old stepped back, looking up with bright blue eyes. “Did you hear? I had a hole in my heart. The doctors found it because of the crash and now I’m all better.” “Yes, Natasha, I heard. And I’m so happy for you.” “I made you something.” She bounded back across the room and picked up a sheet of paper off a coffee table, returning and handing it to Jen. The budding artist had drawn a picture of two cars crashed, a little girl with a large heart with a hole, three
doctors surrounding her and an angel hovering above them all. She pointed to the floating figure. “See that? That’s you, Miss Jennifer. Your my angel God sent to save my life.” Tears filled Jen’s eyes. God had used her. Her, despite her sin and lack of faith until recently. “I think you’re the angel, Natasha. Thank you for reminding me of God’s great love.”
b
Three hours later, with a full stomach and cheeks that hurt from smiling, Jen held Barrett’s as they out of the Parker’s home to his car. “That’s one special little girl.” “Yes, she is.” He leaned against the passenger door. “And I think you have a friend for life.” “I certainly hope so.” “Me, too.” Barrett stepped closer. “Are we still talking about me and Natasha?” “Well, in a way.” Jen raised her eyebrows. “If she’s going to be your little companion for a lifetime, then I guess she’ll be mine, too.” Jen searched his face. What was he saying? He reached into his pocket and lifted his hand, revealing a diamond encircled sapphire ring. Jen’s mouth flew open. “Jen, I love you. Will you marry me?” Everything in her screamed, ‘Yes!’ But could she trust him with her heart? She met his dark eyes. The answer to her question and to his came out in one fragile, breathless word: “Yes.” Barrett clasped her left hand and slid the ring onto her fourth finger. He then leaned down and brushed his lips against hers in the lightest, most euphoric promise of more. So much more.

FALL INTO GREAT TABLETOP DECORATING IDEAS (BPT) - Saying goodbye to summer doesn’t have to be a sentimental ending when you consider it’s also a beginning - the kick off to autumn and the holiday season. The promise of fall is in the air. It’s a great time to dress up your home for fall entertaining; whether that means friends gathered around the television rooting for your favorite team or the ultimate traditional Thanksgiving feast. “Decorating trends for this fall are really fun and functional,” says visual merchandiser John Griffith. “Colors that evoke a sense of nostalgia and family are a really big part of the visual design message for autumn 2013. Metal serveware is another popular trend this fall. Reds, golds and oranges are trending this fall. These hues are not only warm and comforting; they’re reflective of the season.” “We’re incorporating metal serveware into many of our displays because you can do so much with it from a design standpoint,” says Griffith and teammate Julie Robbins add Griffith. “These are great accent pieces you their own unique spin on the latest trends can dress up or down, plus it is family- and to create seasonal design vignettes for football-season friendly. Metal serveware is Replacements, Ltd., the world’s largest retailer of old and new china, crystal, silver and collectibles. Whether you are planning a casual family gathering or an elegant dinner party, Robbins suggests easy ways to mix in great fall colors. This can be as simple as adding a charger plate or colorful serving pieces.
also very functional. Once heated, the alloy retains warmth to keep food warmer longer or cooler if you chill these pieces. Plus it is easy to clean and doesn’t have to be polished. We’re using a lot of fun shapes, like leaf-shaped pieces and turkey platters.” Fall’s bountiful harvest translates into the home this season. Robbins is using natural elements in her table designs that evoke a sense of the first Thanksgiving. “I suggest filling vases, glasses or serving bowls with dried beans, acorns or even kernels of dried deer corn. Not only does this look pretty, you can also mix in candles or flowers and use these natural elements to hold those items in place.” Robbins adds apples, gourds, pumpkins and green pears are among fruits and vegetables you can use on your table or anywhere in your home to create a brilliant splash of color.
“Using colored glass is fantastic way of infusing autumn colors to create a seasonal feel,” says Robbins. “Amber colored glass is really popular this fall because the rich, warm color goes with so many patterns and designs. I’m big on the pressed vintage patterns; depression glass, coin glass and sandwich glass are all very lovely and nostalgic. We’re actually mixing and matching patterns from historic American glassmakers including Federal, Indiana Glass and Fostoria on our tables. It looks great to mix designs which share the same colors or combine an array of colors within a place setting.” OCTOBER 2013 RENEW

I thought that there was nothing that could shake my faith, and that I knew myself pretty well, but those words added a new dimension of discovery: how strong is your faith? That was the beginning of what I can now call the ‘best journey of my life’, and a solid strengthening of my faith. October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, which is an annual campaign to increase Tatrece Dunlap Swann awareness of the disease. While most people are aware of breast cancer, many forget to take the steps to have a plan to detect the disease in it’s early stages and encourage others to do the same. Fast forwarding 12 years after surgery, treatments, radiation, and a beautiful preteen daughter, I’m blessed to say that I AM a breast cancer survivor! Sadly for so many others, that’s not the ending to their story. We as women must continue to be consistent in our self exams and scheduling regular check-ups, because early detection isn’t a cliche, it’s the difference in our quality of life. We have made a lot of progress but still have a long way to go and need your help, so that another woman won’t have to hear those words again. “Where we put our heart & soul into all our services”

hirty years ago, a diagnosis of breast cancer was thought of as a virtual death sentence for many women, but since that time significant progress has been made in the fight against breast cancer. Reduced mortality, less invasive treatments, an increased number of survivors and other advancements have their roots in breast cancer research more than $790 million of it funded by Susan G. Komen, the world’s largest breast cancer organization. However, the reality is that breast cancer is still a serious disease. National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, held each October, brings awareness to the disease and empowers women to take charge of their own breast health.
This year, about 200,000 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed among women in the U.S. and nearly 40,000 women will die from it. Globally, 1.6 million people will be diagnosed, and 400,000 will die. Despite the increased awareness of breast cancer, major myths still abound. Women must remain vigilant against this disease by learning the facts and understanding how they may be able to reduce their risk.

THE CHILDREN ARE OUR FUTURE: THE IMPACT OF VIOLENCE ON LEARNING
by Janice Underwood
I
f anyone has ever seen the light in a kindergartener’s eyes as he or she discovered the world through the watchful care of their teacher, probably has agreed with the iconic adage, “the children are our future.” School-aged children, in particular absorb everything they see, hear, and
experience. They model or imitate those around them to make sense of this world. For example, children watch the adults around them to learn how to walk, talk, tie their shoes, and interact with others. While this is usually a positive process that helps children become confident and self-motivated learners, this process becomes complicated when they feel the effects of violence. Most educators and researchers agree that when children witness or become victims of verbal, physical, or emotional violence, it negatively affects their social, academic, and psychological development, which also adversely affects their propensity to learn in school and beyond. Specifically, children of domestic violence report having rage, embarrassment, shame, depression, and feelings of hopelessness. In turn, teachers report that children of all ages overwhelmed with domestic violence struggle in school with acting out, promiscuity, academic failure, skipping class, fighting, and/ or cussing. So, it is critical that the adults entrusted to care for their children, consider the possible harm domestic violence ensues on their children’s self-worth and how this
impacts their personal future and our collective futures. When children experience violence in the home, it negatively impacts every aspect of their future relationships and future contributions to society, in which they are more likely to continue the cycle of violence as either an adult abuser or future victim. So, if you know of children who are dealing with domestic violence, they are going to need to be convinced they are worthy of genuine love, before they can reach their academic, developmental, and professional life goals. Additionally, you can seek support from the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233) or go to www.thehotline.org. Also you can visit www.abbalist.com/ abuse_support.htm to seek assistance from agencies in your specific Hampton Roads city to provide support to you and your child(ren). You and they are worth it! MOURN.CELEBRATE.CONNECT October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, a time in which we ask the community to help continue to raise awareness and come together to further strengthen a safe, supportive foundation for healthy relationships for all families. Domestic
violence is something that can happen to anyone regardless of gender, race, religion, socio-economic status, etc. It violates a person’s self-image, safety, and dignity. And it affects others in the community through lost productivity, medical costs, etc., and in the most extreme circumstances, the loss of a precious life. Domestic Violence Awareness Month focuses on three major themes: • Mourning those who have died as a result of domestic violence 12 RENEW OCTOBER 2013

Celebrating those who have survived • Connecting to those who work to end domestic violence Here at Avalon, we do these things on a regular basis, since domestic violence is the focus of our work. But this month, we invite you to join us in mourning and in celebrating, and ask you to make connections and work with us to end domestic violence. You can do even more by continuing to educate yourself, talking about these difficult issues with others, or by supporting Avalon as we serve this community. Domestic violence thrives in silence – shamed silence, scared silence, indifferent silence. So this October, add your voice to our movement against domestic violence, and help Avalon create a safer, more positive future for our community!

e’ve all heard these before; “Friends come and go” and “You can choose your friends, but you can’t choose your family.” Whether it’s friends or family, the people we surround ourselves with on a day to day basis shapes who we become. So, it’s extremely important to surround yourself with positive people that you want to be like.
It’s hard to say what a friend is because everyone has their own idea of friendship. However, I have noticed several types of friendships throughout my life. Most popular ones are those in which one person seems to “be in charge” and always dictate what’s going on. Another may be a person that seeks those that have worst lifestyles than they, giving them a stronger sense of certainty about themselves. Of course, there is always the friend that says one thing to you and something else (often contradicting) to another.

The bottom line is if you want more, to be better or need a change, you may want to take a serious look at who you are hanging out with. I recommend searching for what I call “Power Friends.” A Power Friend has the ideal balance of give and take. They are supportive people that you can rely on when it’s good or bad. They are not afraid to tell you like it is or how it should be. More importantly, Power Friends inspire people to be better people in all areas of life.

ADVANCED BREAST CANCER DIAGNOSES LACK SUSTAINABLE SUPPORT
M
ore than half of American women living with advanced breast cancer feel support from friends and family is not as strong now as when they were first diagnosed, according to the global Count Us, Know Us, Join Us survey.
States are diagnosed with breast cancer each year, and as many as 30 percent will develop metastatic disease. For these women, whereas support seems to be strong surrounding their original breast cancer
Benjamin explained that the same type of emotional support and informational resources are especially critical for the approximately 38,000 American women each year who receive an initial diagnosis of advanced breast cancer. Unfortunately, while nearly all of those surveyed in the U.S. say that they actively seek out information about their diagnosis on their own (97 percent), exactly 50 percent say that what is available does not address their needs. What’s more, 70 percent of women say it is hard to find support groups for advanced breast cancer.
American women with stage IV metastatic breast cancer and stage III locally advanced breast cancer - collectively known as advanced breast cancer must cope with feelings of isolation when their disease progresses - a time when, conceivably, support is needed most. Findings from the survey provide insight as to why and how the experiences of women with advanced breast cancer differ from those with earlier stages. “People diagnosed with earlier stages of breast cancer focus on completing treatment as quickly as possible, putting the experience behind them and becoming a survivor,” says Shirley Mertz, president of Metastatic Breast Cancer Network and an advisory board member for Count Us, Know Us, Join Us, a program created by Novartis Oncology and 13 cancer advocacy organizations for people impacted by advanced breast cancer.“In a stage IV diagnosis where cancer spreads or metastasizes, patients must learn to cope with ongoing, never-ending treatments and uncertainty that comes with disease progression.” An estimated 220,000 women in the United

diagnosis, some express difficulty in explaining to their loved ones what it means now that their disease has progressed. According to three-quarters of women who participated in the survey, the differences are severe enough that they feel that no one understands what they are going through. “Many women whose disease has progressed feel isolated from broader breast cancer support groups that focus on early detection and survivorship, because their cancer will not go away,” says Christine Benjamin, breast cancer program director at SHARE Cancer Support, and also an advisory board member for Count Us, Know Us, Join Us. “This is why it is critical for women with advanced breast cancer and
According to Mertz and Benjamin, providing support tailored to the needs of women living with advanced breast cancer plays a huge factor in helping them to live better lives. For that reason, Metastatic Breast Cancer Network, SHARE and other advocacy organizations work to create programs specifically for women with advanced and metastatic breast cancer and help to provide resources such as Count Us, Know Us, Join Us which offers information and support on its website, www.advancedbreastcancercommunity.org, for people impacted by the disease.

BREAST Health Tea ~ Just add water This mineral rich tea nourishes the blood and encourages healthy lymphatic flow. Certified Organic Herbs Calendula, Red Clover, Cleavers, Lady’s Mantle, Spearmint and Orange peel Take 1 ounce of herbs per 1 quart of water. Pour boiling water over mesh ball filled with herbs into the quart Mason jar. Let the herbs steep overnight. Drink 3 to 4 cups throughout the day. • The lymph system is a primary component of our immune system. It contains lymphocytes, white blood cells that destroy bacteria and then help carry infection from the body. The lymph system also plays a major role in maintaining the acid/alkaline balance of the body. If the lymph glands become congested and the lymph flow obstructed, the area surrounding the glands becomes overly acidic, creating a domino effect of cascading pathology. • The breasts have a high concentration of lymphatic tissue and glands. For the health of the body and the health of the breasts, it is important to keep the lymph system flowing freely.

PROTECTING YOUR HOME AND FAMILY WHEN THE POWER GOES OUT - AND STAYS OUT
S
uper storms like Sandy and major floods in Colorado remind us of the devastating impact a long-term power outage can have on a community. Even a basic winter storm with heavy snow and ice can take down the power for days, too. And for some residents, like those who operate a home business or have family members with special needs, losing power is more than a nuisance.

If keeping the power on in your home or business is critical, consider installing a standby generator before trouble arrives. While portable generators can power one or two appliances, a standby generator can supply power for your whole house. A professional installer can place a standby generator outside your home; it looks similar to a central air conditioning unit and runs on natural gas or propane, using existing gas lines. When the power goes out, the standby generator automatically turns on to power critical and sophisticated appliances and systems such as heating and cooling, lights, refrigerators, sump pumps, central air conditioning and home security systems. Kohler, a leading manufacturer of automatic standby generators, advises homeowners to look for a unit that provides clean, consistent power, can handle heavy loads, quickly powers up and offers a five-year minimum warranty. Homeowners should also consider appearance, since the unit sits outside the home, and corrosion-resistance - an especially important consideration for homes near water. To learn more about standby power and to get an idea of the size generator your home would need, visit www.KOHLERGenerators.com.

Ginny Bean, founder/publisher of Ginny’s catalog and Ginnys.com, offers some tips: * Set the scene according to the season and theme of your event. If it’s a Halloween party and you’ve transformed your yard into a ghoulish garden of spooky spectacles, convene in a front room and open the curtains. On Thanksgiving, gather near the fireplace. If your home doesn’t have a fireplace, electric fireplaces provide surprisingly affordable ambiance and season-long enjoyment for your family.

* Set up the room the day before the party, so you have plenty of time to make last-minute changes. Arrange furniture so guests can move around easily, clearing out extra furniture if necessarily. A general rule of thumb for mixers and cocktail parties is to have seating for 10 to 15 percent of your guests.
