There’s no pressure with Debbie to do things her way, but at the same time she will steer you away from any “Oh, my God, why did you let me choose that?” As much as she loves the design process, your complete satisfaction is her main goal and she will go the extra mile to achieve it. Jen cried out and opened her eyes. The simple warmth of Marla’s den greeted her. She wasn’t still in the parking lot. No rough hand grabbed and jerked her. Muscular arms encircled her, though. She looked up into Barrett’s dark eyes, noting the Part 24 crease in his brow. “You okay?” She nodded, then shrugged. Tears brimmed in her eyes and blurred his face. “You had a pretty scary night.” Barrett had a knack for understating things. The trembling began again. He smoothed her hair. “Shhh. It’ll be alright, Jen. You’re safe now.” “I… She hiccuped. “I don’t understand. Why would God let that happen? I put my faith in Him and had such peace.” He sighed. “I don’t know. We may not ever have an answer. But we live in a sinful world, Jen, and God tells us in His word to be prepared for trials. Just like you and I have made wrong choices that hurt others, those guys don’t know the Lord and are living only for themselves. You know that way of living always hurts others.” Jen slumped in his embrace. Her neck hurt, but she didn’t know whether it was from the trauma of the night before or sleeping in Barrett’s arms on the sofa. He’d held her after bringing her home until her sobs had exhausted her. “So, our girl’s awake.” Marla strolled in the room and to the kitchenette. “She is.” Marla pulled several items out of the fridge. “How ya feelin’, Sweetie?” Jen shrugged her shoulders again. “I don’t think she’s sure yet.” “That’s understandable.” Where had all the groceries come from? “How about some pancakes this morning?” A mixing bowl came out of one of the cabinets. “You’re cooking?” Marla laughed. “Relax, my friend. Pancakes are my specialty.” “I am a bit hungry.” “Good.” Jen turned, breaking Barrett’s embrace. She sat up and faced him. There was no way to stay focused while in his arms. “What about the little girl? I mean me, I can kinda understand that. I’ve made enough bad choices, I deserve whatever punishment God sends my way. But that small, innocent girl, how can that be part of His plan?” He reached out and stroked her cheek. “First of all, God doesn’t necessarily work that way. What happened to you could have been a consequence, or simply those guys sin, or something else completely. Sometimes we know the reason for things. Sometimes we don’t.” “I don’t know, Barrett. I can’t wrap my brain around this one.” He opened his mouth to answer, but hesitated and held a finger up. Pulling his phone from his back pocket, he answered, “Hello?” His eyes lit up as he listened. “Yeah?” What in the world? “That’s great, man. Thanks.” He hung up and grinned at her as if he’d just won the lottery. “And sometimes He provides an answer.” “Who was that?” “My cousin, Mark. He’s an E.M.T. and I asked him to keep me updated on the little girl.” Jen’s hopes soared. She leaned forward, grabbing Barrett’s hands in hers. “She’s okay?” “She’s better than okay. They did an x-ray because of a suspected cracked rib. Turns out she has a heart defect no one knew about.” How was that good news? “I don’t understand.” His grin broadened. “Jen, if she hadn’t been in the accident, they may have never found it. The hole would have gotten worse over time and could have caused major problems for her.” Jen’s hand flew to her mouth. “The accident saved that little girl’s life.”

ust a few more weeks of summer, and we transition into one of my favorite seasons: FALL! Fresh from a family vacation in New York City, I was a fortunate eye by Tatrece Dunlap Swann witness to the first hand preparations the city makes every year in anticipation of the thousands who will participate in New York’s Fashion Week. For those of you who may or may not be familiar with the term Fashion Week, it’s the time when major fashion designers in cities around the world present their next season’s collection to fashion buyers and the media. They run six months ahead of time, so shows presented in the fall feature clothes for the next spring, and clothes shown in the spring are for fashions to be worn in the fall. You may ask yourselves an obvious question: Why do they run six months ahead ahead of time? Because designers
need time to fill the orders department store buyers place during fashion week. Making thousands of copies of each garment takes time – it doesn’t happen overnight. The six month lag also allows fashion magazines time to create their articles and photo shoots and deliver the content at the appropriate time. It’s an exciting yet hectic time to see what designers have in store, and what kinds of fashions will be stocked in our department and specialty stores here locally. The Fall 2013 fashion week schedule looks like this: New York: September 6-13; London: September 14-18; Milan: September 18-24; Paris: September 25- October 3; Virginia: October 9-13; and Los Angeles: October 1421. Fashion is a billion dollar industry, and this is what’s required to sell the kind of volume they do. The bulk of sales in fashion come from things the “average person” like you and I can afford, like ready-to-wear pieces, licensed accessories, and perfume. This is why fashion week has become so important. These shows, the buyers and
celebrity spectators who attend, will dictate the fashion trends we’ll soon see on the streets in our towns, and the hallways of our kid’s schools. As parents, here is where you get a sense of the reasons why our children ask for and purchase the clothing they do. I strolled through the infamous Bryant Park to see exactly where tents would be erected that house the many fashion shows planned. While visiting some of my favorite shops, I had the opportunity to walk among the many people on the streets of New York, and the one thing I found fascinating is that there is a definite sense of ‘style’ Not just one style, but many different aspects of how style if viewed. Too bad they’re planning six months out, though. In our new world of Twitter and Facebook that gives instant reporting through images and instant gratification, six months seems like an eternity…
What is beauty?
I
n 1913, Webster’s dictionary defined beauty as“properties pleasing the eye, the ear, the intellect, the aesthetic faculty or the moral sense”. Today, the definition of beauty has narrowed to a shocking degree – the result of decades of focusing only on what is pleasing to the EYE.
From a very early age girls and women show a high level of dissatisfaction with their bodies and their looks. This comes largely from the belief that beauty is defined by the media, Hollywood and the beauty industry. Thankfully, things are now shifting! There is a revolution that seeks to redefine beauty in a way that is more natural and holistic, and more reflective of our needs, emotions and perceptions. One that leaves behind a static, one-size-fits-all mentality and embraces a broader appreciation of beauty. This movement is also moving us away from synthetic, mass produced beauty products which rely on ingredients made from harmful ingredients and petrochemicals, to those which are made from safer and more sustainable natural sources. Here at NYR Organic, our mission is to help women feel beautiful, from the inside out, with natural, safe, ethical products. Join us in changing the world, one blue bottle at a time. NOW AVAILABLE!

t’s the cycle of fashion - trends are always recycling, returning and changing. Save time and money by transforming your existing wardrobe into stylish, ontrend pieces with a few simple tricks. Do-over your denim Shorts are a fashionable warm weather staple - and a great way to show off your tan. Make a personalized pair by repurposing old jeans - just trim them at your desired length for a cool, casual pair of cutoffs. Or, embrace the bright color trend by transforming colored khakis or denim into capri pants or Bermuda shorts. Add a bit of pop to your jeans by adding fabric panels at the sides - open the side seams and sew in some fabric all the way down. For a simpler touch, add lace or ribbon down the side seams for a chic effect, or cover the back pockets in a unique design.

Each entry will be presented in a runway show as part of the final day of VA Fashion Week to be held in the Stryker Building ( 412 N.Boundary Street in Williamsburg) on Sunday October 13, 2013.
Transform a T-shirt The classic summer tee is the perfect medium for some do-it-yourself fashion flair. Give new life to a favorite T-shirt by transforming it into a halter top. Start with a crew neck T-shirt, remove the sleeves, cut a v-shape in the front and back, then trim straight across the back at the bottom of the v-shape to create straps. To embrace another fun trend, add some fringe to the bottom of a t-shirt. For best results, start with a T-shirt that’s a bit longer. Mark where you want the fringe to start; next, use a ruler to measure even strips. Then, snip, snip.
Also, Artist Kent Knowles of S.C.A.D., will have larger fashion inspired works in Williamsburg during VA Fashion Week. Currently Knowles paintings are archived at Linda Matney Gallery and the new arrivals will fit appropriately with the “Work of Art” VAFW 2013 contest. For instance, cut out a personalized monogram using Duck Tape Sheets to add some style to a handbag or backpack, make a funky flower ring or create colorful waterproof flips flops using a few of the hundreds of colors and prints available. Embellish away Stenciling or painting on fabric is another easy way to turn basic clothing into sophisticated styles. Create your own customized stencils using contact paper, or find plenty of options at your local craft store or on websites like Etsy. Just pick up some fabric paint, lay out your stencil and get to work. For a super simple - but definitely eye-catching - transformation, try replacing the buttons on a favorite sweater or jacket with new buttons in an unexpected color, fabric or texture. Adding beads, ribbon or lace are additional options for making your clothing your own. Not ready to make over your favorite existing pieces? Experiment with finds from a local consignment store, Goodwill or Salvation Army shop - you’ll often discover gently used or like-new clothing for just a few dollars, and you won’t have to worry if your design goes awry. For more fun fashion do-it-yourself ideas, check out Pinterest, crafting websites like Craftster, or try to recreate styles from the pages of your favorite fashion magazine. SEPTEMBER 2013 RENEW

MACARONI KID KICKS OFF SECOND YEAR OF TEACHER OF THE MONTH PROGRAM – HONORING TEACHERS IN WILLIAMSBURG, NEWPORT NEWS AND HAMPTON WILLIAMSBURG/NEWPORT NEWS/HAMPTON: Starting in September, local teachers will be getting a little more recognition for all their hard work. Macaroni Kid is teaming up with Relay Foods, an online grocer, with twice a week pick-up service in Williamsburg, as well as kidsdinefree.net, and is accepting other family friendly businesses and Media sponsors to help make our second year of the “Teacher of the Month” program an even larger success. “The first year of the program was a huge success, with about 350 teachers being nominated from Williamsburg/JCC, Newport News and Hampton, VA schools,” said Amy King, Editor/Publisher of Macaroni Kid Williamsburg. “Every teacher that won the monthly award last school year said the honor was special, the prizes were generous, but that teaching is their passion and they couldn’t imagine doing anything else!” This school year Macaroni Kid is partnering with various family-friendly businesses on the Peninsula to honor our Teachers. “If your child has a teacher that they look up to, we hope you will nominate them,” said King. “With the popularity of the program last school year, and the need to honor the hard work teachers do each and every day, we knew we would continue the program this school year,” said Amy King, Editor/Publisher of Macaroni Kid Williamsburg. “Working in a school myself, I know the hard work that goes into making a classroom something special for students to learn and thrive in and it’s great that we can give some attention to those teachers who deserve extra kudos!” Parents can help their kids nominate a teacher that has made a difference in their life starting September 1, 2013. The first teacher of the month will be announced on October 2, 2013 in the Macaroni Kid weekly e-newsletter, and will continue throughout the 2013-2014 school year, with a different teacher being recognized each month. The winning teachers will receive a $50 gift certificate from Relay foods, a gift certificate from www.kidsdinefree.net, as well as other generous prizes from our Teacher of the Month Sponsors.
Would you like to increase the Beauty, Function and Value of your Home?
Amy King, a Williamsburg mom of one son, launched Macaroni Kid Williamsburg in 2011. 1st Advantage Raises Over $41,000 to Support Childhood Cancer Research
I Paul W. Muse, President/CEO of 1st Advantage FCU, presents a matching donation check for $5,000 to St. Baldricks
n a bold statement of solidarity with kids with cancer, more than 40 volunteers shaved their heads at a recent St. Baldrick’s Foundation fundraising event at the Stonehouse Tradition Golf Club in Toano, Virginia to raise money for childhood cancer research. 1st Advantage Federal Credit Union raised $41,189.76 as part of a global effort to Conquer Childhood Cancers. Enterprise Holdings Foundation also participated in raising funds for St. Baldrick’s Foundation. Why all the shaved heads? Worldwide a child is diagnosed with cancer every three minutes, and one in five children diagnosed in the U.S. will not survive. With only 4 percent of all federal cancer research funding dedicated to pediatric cancer research, St. Baldrick’s Foundation volunteers, supporters and donors are needed to continue the battle against this devastating disease.
The St. Baldrick’s Foundation is a volunteer-driven charity committed to funding the most promising research to find cures for childhood cancers and give survivors long and healthy lives. Since 2005, St. Baldrick’s has awarded more than $101 million to support lifesaving research, making the Foundation the largest private funder of childhood cancer research grants. St. Baldrick’s funds are granted to some of the most brilliant childhood cancer research experts in the world and to younger professionals who will be the experts of tomorrow. Funds awarded also enable hundreds of local institutions to participate in national pediatric cancer clinical trials, which may be a child’s best hope for a cure. For more information about the St. Baldrick’s Foundation please call 1.888.899.BALD or visit www.StBaldricks.org.

Seafood can really stink, literally. If the dish that you order isn’t fresh, the chances of you patting your belly and saying “mmmmmm” after the meal are incredibly diminished. Likewise, if it’s not cooked right, then the excitement of texture, smell, presentation and taste has been eroded. That’s why it is such a joy when a seafood restaurant comes along and does it right. Holy Mackerel entered the scene early this year and has been racking up good ratings ever since. We live right down the street, so for months we’ve heard and felt Holy Mackerel’s call to “Eat here! Eat here!”. So we finally did. We started off our meal with a handful of appetizers, including their “Pound O’ Wings”. Being that we were visiting a seafood restaurant one would assume that anything BBQ related would play second fiddle to their seafood. Holy Mackerel definitely proved us wrong on this one. They actually smoke their BBQ in house! The flavors of the wings were excellent and had a nice little kick at the end of each bite. Tuna Sashimi and Shrimp was next. I loved the combination of the tuna sashimi with their coleslaw and the added spice of a little hot sauce dripped delicately over top. The owner suggested we also try their fried oysters. I’ll admit, I am not a big lover of oysters because most have disappointed me and left me biting down with all my might only to realize I was eating a rubber shoe. But I was willing to give them another shot. So, I exercised my jaw muscles like Joey Chestnut* and got ready for war; when much to my surprise they simply melted in my mouth. Our last appetizer was the Shrimp and Grits. This was one of those addicting dishes where you take one bite, then keep taking another and another until you realize that there will be no leftovers for tomorrow. Let’s move on to the main dishes, shall we? We received one order of Alaskan Crab Legs. Holy Mackerel actually has an awesome all you can eat crab leg night on Mondays, so you’ll have to 18 RENEW SEPTEMBER 2013
plan for that. Our waitress highly recommended their Seared Scallops and said that was her favorite dish. I’m so excited about this dish that I can barely wait until “Mindy’s favorite thing” to tell you about them. Our last two entrees were the Chicken Norfolk and the Grilled Shrimp Wrap. The Chicken Norfolk was topped with crab meat and Smithfield Country ham. This was a unique and tasty chicken dish. I also really enjoyed the Grilled Shrimp Wrap. It reminded me of a BLT with shrimp because it was made with bacon, tomatoes, ranch dressing, and onions. I picture this as a perfect summer afternoon lunch item. Just when we thought we were done, the owner came out to chat with us and asked if we had tried their peanut butter pie yet. If you read our last review about The Surrey House you know there is no way I can resist a peanut butter dessert. I “served”Eddie by eating the remainder of the dessert that he was too full to finish.
Holy Mackerel has already established itself in such a short amount of time as a great local seafood restaurant (and BBQ too!). They try to get all of their seafood fresh, and as much as possible, buy from local vendors, farms, etc. They also have some great hand crafted cocktails and very creative drinks. Their bitters and sours are made in house and they try to use VA based breweries for drafts. So, when you go to Holy Mackerel, you know they have put a lot of attention into giving you fresh dishes, hand crafted drinks and warm service. I’m excited for you to give them a try.
any more soft and succulent. Their menu description is as follows: “Perfectly seared jumbo scallops, served with Jasmine rice, grilled asparagus, and lemon butter sauce.”That lemon butter sauce in combination with those ridiculous jumbo scallops was amazing. Any time I hear the word “scallops”I will think of this dish. Amazing. Just amazing.
Can I say I’d like to “try”the Seared Scallops again? No? All right, then I would like to try the Sockeye Salmon Wrap –“Grilled Salmon, field greens, tomato, cucumber, cilantro aioli”. I like salmon, I love cilantro, and I already know I liked the Grilled Shrimp Wrap, so I’m pretty sure this would be a winner, too.
Pound O’Wings. “House-smoked chicken wings served hot, mild, or BBQ, and garnished with cucumber, celery, and bleu cheese or ranch dressing.”WOW. The flavor of the smoked wings combined with their unique and homemade BBQ sauce is incredible.
Smithfield Ribs. “Smoked in house and rubbed with our secret spice blend, then grilled and brushed with our sweet and tangy BBQ sauce. Served with fries and cole slaw.”Ribs from Smithfield and smothered in that delicious BBQ sauce that they used on their wings? I’m in.
