In People acc The Orchid Group has become the first managed pub company to enter the ranks of Investors in People. After more than a year of working with the Investors In People assessment team, Orchid has formally been accredited IIP status. We join an elite group of employeefocused firms in the UK that have been recognised by Investors In People.

Who are investors in people? Investors In People assess companies based not on what they say they do, but by finding out whether they do what they say they do. It does this by talking to employees to find out how the company communicates and engages with them and helps them progress and develop.

How did we achieve this ? Orchid has been praised for its industry-leading training and recognised qualifications up to NVQ Level 5 and NVQ Level 7 planned for later this year. 200 people on our Apprenticeship programmes over the last year show our “…not o commitment to new generations of hospitality staff. Back to Work . . . With

With the current “economic downturn” that we all keep hearing so much about, thousands of people across the nation are unemployed and struggling to find employment. As a company, we promote our values of ‘attracting and nurturing the very best people’. So what can Orchid do to help? The answer is simple. Get on board with the ‘Back to Work’ schemes and give as many people out there as we can the chance they deserve. A shining example of a General Manager who has done this and achieved great success is Sharon Johnson at the Hare & Hounds, Minworth. Sharon was due to undergo investment as one of the first All Inns and only had a handful of team members so she knew that she needed to recruit on a large scale. Approaching her local Job Centre she got involved with the ‘Back to Work’

So what’s this all about? There are three different schemes you can get involved in…

Sector Based Work Academy The Sector Based Work Academy is a pub and bar based scheme that is provided by Perceptions. It involves two weeks of hospitality training and all we have to do in return is provide an interview to those job seekers that complete the two week course. This scheme has no age limit and Orchid does not have to make any payments for the two weeks of training that is provided. Sharon’s experience… “It saved so much time. They did all the sifting through candidates for us, we basically told them what we were looking for and they did the leg work. They also did an initial interview to check that they matched the criteria, it was great! The job seekers had to attend a recruitment day where we were able to have input and tell them a bit about the company and what we at the Hare & Hounds were all about. We got to do a brief interview with each of them and then choose which ones we wanted to go through OMG OMG

schemes and has never looked back! Over a month after the investment and Sharon and her team are still beating budgets with a work force consisting of 90% ‘Back to Work’ scheme members!

Attracting and nurturing!! We have 70 people currently on board with Orchid through these schemes.

Attracting and nurturing!! So far we are giving 161 people the chance to improve their lives.

the two week training. Being involved in the whole process meant that we could highlight areas that we wanted to be in the training such as the mystery customer and customer journey. All we had to do at the end of the two weeks was guarantee them an interview. Normally you would only have a trial shift to base your decision of employment on. Here they had a first interview, two weeks of training and a second interview. It is always about getting the right team and the right personalities. With doing this and having the input I got to see for myself just how enthusiastic they were about the job prospect.” We have 30 pledges for this scheme so far!

Wage Incentive Scheme The Wage Incentive Scheme is provided by the Job Centre Plus for people aged between 18-24 years old that have been out of employment for six months or more. National Minimum Wage is paid by Orchid to each employee on the scheme and if they are in continuous employment with you across a 26 week period then a payment of £2275 is paid to the site which will hit your P&L (this amount is for full time employees). To claim payment it must be declared via the Job Centre and HR before they commence on scheme - otherwise payment is not issued (very important). There is also a payment for part time staff which is pro rota. Sharon also has employees on the Wage Incentive Scheme. “There may be the bonus at the end of the 26

August 2013 OMG!

weeks but I don’t see it like that, I look at it as wanting a good team here, a team that works well. If you get the money and the employees have stayed for 26 weeks then it is just an added bonus to the successful team that you have.” We have 26 current pledges for this scheme!

Work Experience- 2-8 weeks The Work Experience scheme is provided by the Job Centre Plus and involves 2-8 weeks training in a pub, and a few weeks in different departments.

The job seekers point of view So what impact has all of Sharon’s hard work and support to the ‘Back to Work’ schemes had? There is no better way to find out than by speaking to a handful of Sharon’s team. Luke had been out of permanent employment for a year before joining the Hare & Hounds team. He struggled to find employment and found that in a lot of cases companies will not even give a response to your application. Luke really enjoys working at the Hare & Hounds for Orchid. “They are interested in you here; they want to train you and offer courses.” Nicole had been out of employment for six months before she joined the Hare & Hounds team. “I had always worked from leaving school and didn’t want to

13

In this scheme no payment is made by Orchid to the individual but if they impress during the placement a job offer can be made at the end. Although Sharon has not yet taken anyone on work experience, this is her next step! She says that going forward, with the need to recruit fewer members of staff than her initial recruitment drive, this scheme is ideal. It would give General Managers the opportunity to look at how someone performs for more than just a trial shift and it would show their commitment and how they bond with the current team. We have 35 pledges for this scheme already in place!

be out of work. I wanted the help to go back to work and approached the Job Centre. I had heard about the schemes offered and so asked about it.” Nicole found barriers to employment due to a lack of experience. We should ask ourselves... 'how can people gain experience if no one is giving them the opportunity?'. Reece had been out of employment for six months before he joined the Hare & Hounds team. “The longer you are out of employment the harder it is.” This is a statement that was agreed with by all who felt that when prospective Managers see the gap in employment they automatically reject or ignore the application. Tom was out of employment for seven months before joining the team at the Hare & Hounds. “A lot of people will not give you a chance, they say you don’t have the right experience, they see the gap in employment and question it.” Tom and all of Sharon’s back to work team have really enjoyed their experience and are over the moon that they were given an opportunity. The pub is doing really well and the whole team are excited about the future.

If you are interested in getting on board with the ‘Back to Work’ schemes, The Work Experience and Wage Incentive are completed with the Job Centre so please contact your local office.

GIVING OUR CUSTOMERS EVEN MORE

Orchid Employee Predictions! Though the comment ‘this could be the best football season ever’ gets tossed around at the start of every domestic campaign like a wet fish, this actually happens to be one of those occasions where, if you did happen to utter those blissfully ignorant words, you wouldn’t be left standing alone at the bar listening to your mates discuss how you must have downed too many snakebites.

Only the Barclays Premier League could provide this many thought-provoking questions whilst still only covering the potential top-six finishers.

It really could be one of those seasons. “Why?” you ask? Simply because it raises so many questions rather than offering clear answers. How will Man Utd fare in the post-Fergie era? Will David Moyes stand the immense pressure of such a demanding club? Can Manchester City enjoy their football again under new manager Manuel Pellegrini? Will they finally get past the first group stage of the Champions League? Can the ‘Special One’ weave his magic for the blues once again? How will Mourinho deal with his ‘ageing’ past heroes; Lampard, Terry and Cole? Can Arsene ‘The Professor’ still mount a title challenge? Will the Arsenal fans finally run out of patience with their long-serving Frenchman? How can Andre Villas-Boas follow on from his record points-tally season for Tottenham? Will Gareth Bale still be a Spurs player come the end of August? Will Brendan Rogers manage to hold on to Luiz Suarez? Do the reds have the ability in their squad to push for a Champions League place?

Paul H.

OMG OMG

It’s because of these reasons that we believed now was the perfect time to go out to the business and ask various employees how they see the season panning out… their predictions can be found on the back page. (WORD OF CAUTION – some are slightly more optimistic than others!)

Scott @ White Hart Hotel, Hook

Chris Hoad @ Red

• Who are your team? Tottenham • Who will win the Premier League title for the 2013/14 season? I think Chelsea. Mourinho is back and whether you love him or hate him, he is one of the best managers around and will have a massive point to prove after getting the sack last time! • Which teams will finish in the top four? 1: Chelsea (because of the ‘Special One’), 2: Man City (first season with a new manager), 3: Man Utd (first season with a new manager) and 4: Tottenham (because we are better than ARSEnal). • Which summer transfer will have the most impact? Paulinho will be a very good player for Spurs in his first season. He looked very good for Brazil against England in the 2-2 friendly. He’s strong and good with his feet; I think the Premiership will suit his style of play. • Which team will struggle the most this season? Aston Villa; clung on by the skin of their teeth last season and I think they are the next ‘big’ team to be relegated.

Lion, Oxford

Jason Deen @ Westbury Park Tavern, Henleaze

• Who are your team? Manchester United. • Who will win the Premier League title for the 2013/14 season? Man Utd going on history alone. A couple of top signings will build upon what’s already there. • Which teams will finish in the top four? Man Utd, Chelsea, Man City and Arsenal. Top teams have good buying power this year… only two other possible contenders; Liverpool and Tottenham. • Which summer transfer will have the most impact? Gareth Bale; he will strengthen any squad and his (possible) departure will severely weaken Tottenham. • Which team will struggle the most this season? Newcastle; they struggled last year on the road and there’s lots of confusion of who's running the team with their new director of football.

Thom Clark @ BRB The Junction, Highbury

• Who are your team? Bolton Wanderers (automatic promotion this season!) • Who will win the Premier League title for the 2013/14 season? Chelsea will comfortably win the league. The main reason? The ‘Special One’ of course. • Which teams will finish in the top four? 1: Chelsea, 2: Man City (will go far in all competitions but runners-up for me), 3: Man Utd (will miss Fergie massively), 4: Arsenal (will be a long drawn out battle with Tottenham for 4th but I tip the Gunners to shade it over the final few weeks). • Which summer transfer will have the most impact? Rooney to Chelsea; I think he will be a striker reborn! • Which team will struggle the most this season? Norwich City; they were lucky to stay up last season as they went on a poor run after Christmas. I think they’ll drop with Southampton and Hull.

• Who are your team? Arsenal • Who will win the Premier League title for the 2013/14 season? Going to have to say Arsenal of course! If we get Suarez he’ll start behaving better under Wenger’s coaching and he’ll bang in 40-odd goals for us! • Which teams will finish in the top four? Chelsea, Man Utd, Man City and Arsenal. • Which summer transfer will have the most impact? Suarez (if he joins Arsenal) will have a massive effect… and if dirty Man Utd get Fabregas that’ll be massive for them. • Which team will struggle the most this season? Hull City; the weakest team and because they have crappy Steve Bruce coaching them!

Pat Rigbey (Area

Mark @ High Flyer, Ely

Manager)

• Who are your team? Norwich City • Who will win the Premier League title for the 2013/14 season? I think Spurs will win the title because Man Utd, Man City and Chelsea have all changed managers and it takes time to change teams to your way of thinking, just the same when taking on a new pub! Arsenal are no longer a force with Wenger and the rest haven’t the resources. • Which teams will finish in the top four? Spurs, Man Utd, Chelsea and the dark horse… Swansea! • Which summer transfer will have the most impact? Van Wolfswinkle at Norwich. They couldn’t score goals last season but this year they will! • Which team will struggle the most this season? Hull City; Steve Bruce hasn’t the quality to keep a team up and the resources at Hull will see them down by Christmas.

• Who are your team? Chelsea • Who will win the Premier League title for the 2013/14 season? Being a special team with the ‘Special One’ in charge will definitely put Chelsea in strong contention for the League title. • Which teams will finish in the top four? Chelsea, Man City, Man Utd and Arsenal… hopefully in that order because that’s what I’ve placed a bet on! • Which summer transfer will have the most impact? Rooney to Chelsea - if it happens! It will unsettle Man Utd giving Chelsea a bit of an edge… don’t you just love Mourinho’s mind games! • Which team will struggle the most this season? Liverpool will struggle again. No focus, no imagination and all the old guard are exactly that.
