A Note From the Editor What a privilege it is to be a stay-at-home mother! It seems like it is a rarity these days that mother ’s get to stay home and raise their children daily. I did not know it at the time (for several years), that my husband and I had learned to live on one income long before we had a baby. We never wanted to get into something that would make us feel uncomfortable as a payment and kept a pretty good budget. When our little man arrived , it brought me to the realization that we had always lived on one income and this gave us the opportunity to allow me to stay home with our son , Javin . Of course we had to change our spending habits and eat at home more , etc. but oh what an opportunity. I do realize that some parents would rather work than stay home and I really thought I was that type of person but came to realize not long after Javin was born that I wanted to spend every possible minute I could with him...seeing his first roll or steps...being there to teach him and train him in life . And I do believe it was the best decision we could have made as parents for our child . I’ll be the first to admit though , it is not always easy! Especially when you have a very active child like we have . But I also would not trade it for the world . We’ve made many sacrifices but the joy we get from hearing our son memorize Scriptures or lives he has already impacted make it all worth it. If there are young ladies you know that may want to stay home with their children someday, I would ask you to encourage them to be wise with their finances and prepare for the future because you never know when you may want to be a stay-at-home mother! So many times I run into people who have never been taught finances and would love to be able to stay home but are not able to because they need the second income ...if they learn while they are younger it makes a more possible future! This Mother ’s Day, I rejoice in the blessing of children! They truly are a gift from God! Happy Mother ’s Day to all those beautiful mother ’s out there!!! Kassie Meyer

Saving
children has never made any more “cents”! The fundraising arm of the General Sunday School Division is “Save Our Children.” Its original goal and dream was to build a great church from children upward. Jesus taught us that new wine needed to be placed in new bottles. If the new wine were placed in old bottles, the bottles would burst and spill all the liquids. Similarly, every major corporation focuses upon one major word: change! The old equipment, the old printing presses, the old computers, the old buildings need to be replaced. While repairing older equipment is expensive and sometimes necessary, good executives always make plans for some new things to be added to their company. It’s a part of continued growth! While I by no means am stating that older people are not important— because we are—the future lies in the hands of our children. So to
4 APOSTOLIC ACCENT May 2012
keep the future bright, we must financially support our children. Now is a great time for you to be involved in helping raise money for Save Our Children. The General Sunday School Division is positioning to launch this program to assist churches in saving our children. We have a dream of reaching one million children in the next five years! That’s only 200,000 children per year, but this will help build an army of children who will be qualified and trained to step into leadership positions! We will do this through Junior Bible Quizzing, Sunday school literature and classes, children’s crusades, Junior Camps, B.R.E.A.D. (the Bible reading program) and many other training programs. Help us help you, as we prepare for the future! Save Our Children has never been more important! Leaving no child behind is our drive. Our 2012 goal for Save Our Children is $1.4 million. It can be done
and it must be done! Let’s put our greatest amount of support to the greatest area of potential. Our future is reached through our wallet and purses. Will you help us reach our children? The harvest is ripe and the laborers are few, so let’s recruit children to save our world. Let’s go down in the record book as saying, “We gave our priority dollars to a priority cause: to Save Our Children.” The deadline is June 1, 2012. Make your district Sunday School director proud to serve your district! Thanks in advance for your sacrificial offering.◊ ____________________________ Rev. Get up and GO
By Stan Gleason
“For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again” [Proverbs 24:16]. Just men fall just like any other men. Difference is they keep arising. The Biblical meaning for the number seven is completion (Nelson’s*) A just man falleth seven time. He falls until he may feel like a complete failure but he keeps getting up. What do you do when you fall? Get up and go! “Rejoice not against me, O mine enemy: when I fall, I shall arise” [Micah 7:8]. When you sin – repent. Make a mistake – learn from it. Fail – fix what broke. Expect to fail – change your attitude. Fear failure – take a new risk. Don’t quit; keep trying. Somebody said “don’t let failure define you” meaning, keep trying even after you’ve failed. I agree with that but I also think that failure can be a powerful tool
6 APOSTOLIC ACCENT April 2012
to help define us because much can be learned from failure. So it could also be said “let failure define you” or, learn how to be better from your past failures. In his book, “Failing Forward,” John Maxwell said: “Don’t expect never to fail, know that failure is part of progress.” Obviously, much easier said than done. Failure is never fun. It hurts. But it doesn’t have to destroy us. We can recover if we’ll just get up and go on.◊ *Nelson’s Illustrated Bible Dictionary, Copyright © 1986, Thomas Nelson Publishers ____________________________ Stan Gleason is an Evangelist from Oregon City, Oregon. Ministry of
Motherhood “And she said, Oh my lord, as thy soul liveth, my lord, I am the woman that stood by thee here, praying unto the LORD. For this child I prayed; and the LORD hath given me my petition which I asked of him: Therefore also I have lent him to the LORD; as long as he liveth he shall be lent to the LORD”. (1Samuel 1:26-28). We are living in a day when most people honor their mother on Mothers day—yet many women are deciding not to be a mother. To have a childless marriage is increasingly the choice of many couples. Fifty thousand babies are aborted every year! Oh, so selfish! We need to not only honor mothers but also motherhood.
12 APOSTOLIC ACCENT May 2012
I wonder how childless couples will feel when they approach old age—with no one close to care? No little children to hold? No grandchildren in which to boast— with no pictures to proudly show. Yes, they will have things—but few relationships. Rachel said, “Give me children else I die.” The world is devaluing the home and the value of the homemaker. Society is calling to our wives to assert themselves, to go out into the professional world and to make a name for themself. Our culture says, “Don’t be subservient to your husband! Be independent—be your own person!” God’s voice still rings: “And be not conformed to this world but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye might prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God” (Romans 12:2). Another version states: “Be not squeezed into the world’s mold.” What is happening to our families is not good. It is not acceptable and it certainly is not the perfect will of God. God designed families: “God setteth the solitary in families…” (Psalm 68:6). God’s plan is that marriage be a union between a man and a woman and that they both be blessed with children. God also planned that the man would be the provider and protector-- while the woman would be the homemaker and mother of the children. How far have we removed ourselves from God’s plan. When our daughter Tricia was still in elementary school I encouraged my wife, Lorraine, to go back to school and become a nurse. I
figured that it would be the best insurance I could give her. She dutifully went back, and for a time was doing very well—I thought. One day I came home and found her in tears. As she sobbed she cried out in an accusing voice, “I don’t want to go to school! I want to stay home and be just (please, don’t ever say, ‘just’) a homemaker! The only reason I am doing this is because you asked me to!” Since then she has been at home and has spoiled the whole family rotten. I’m so glad she continues to make my home a sanctuary. God has placed within the breast of every normal woman the desire for children. Just a few years back, Connie Chung, a nationally known and successful newsperson (the politically correct word)--at the age of approximately thirty-five asked for a year off in order to have a child. Success did not fill the void. I remember well one of my single teachers coming into my office and telling me that she felt so unfulfilled because she did not have a child. Another single teacher went to South America in order to adopt two children. Most experts agree that it is best for the baby if a new mother will take a maternity leave in order to spend a few months with her new child. We now know that the first eighteen months may be the most important months in a child’s life –for it is during this time that a baby ‘bonds’ to his mother. If there is no bonding there is a high liklyhood that the child will have emotional problems for the rest of his life. The question is what happens when it is time for the moth-
er to go back to work. National speaker Zig Ziggler cites studies which show that, “emotionally and subconsciously a mother who knows she must go back to work and leave her baby—builds a wall of resistance against the hurt she will feel.” The child feels it as rejection and distance. Every child deserves to be born. Every child, also, deserves to have a mother at home with fresh cookies on the counter when they get home from school. “Can a woman forget her sucking child, that she should not have compassion on the son of her womb? yea they may forget, yet I will not forget thee” (Isaiah 49:15).◊ ____________________________ David Reynolds has been the Minister of Discipleship at Portland Pentecostals since 2007.
