Welcome Home

It is my sincere pleasure to welcome each and every one of you to the 2016 Oregon Country Fair! Our stages are brimming with talent, our vendors offer the finest crafts and our food booths represent the best of the Pacific Northwest, inviting you to sample cuisines from around the world. Our entertainers include an amazing and eclectic mix of musicians, acrobats, poets, magicians, jugglers, clowns, tumblers, puppeteers, actors, comedians, marching bands, jug bands and many more that, frankly, defy description. And the food! This isn’t your typical fair food. Not by a mile. I’ve got nothing against elephant ears and cotton candy, mind you, but come on! This is the freshest, most delicious food this side of anywhere and my only regret is that I have but one stomach to give for my Fair. Need a pair of leather sandals comfortable enough to wear all day yet perfectly suited for an evening out on the town? We got ‘em. Looking for an original piece of jewelry to show that special someone just how much they mean to you? Your choices are mind boggling. Are you eight months pregnant and absolutely need to have your belly painted in a tastefully brilliant rendition of Gaia? No problem. Pottery? Yup. All of the crafts sold at the Fair are hand-made by the crafter that you are buying it from.

© JEREMY RUNNING

What the Oregon Country Fair really offers, though, is the experience of the Fair itself. This is the place to put aside your fears. To suspend your disbelief. To take the chance of opening up your heart. To be willing to have your mind blown. And it’s all possible in our little magical spot in the woods of Oregon. On the banks of the Long Tom River, you have found a place where you can allow yourself to be happy. You deserve it. Welcome home. Tom Gannon, General Manager

Opening Ceremony

We are the descendants of our ancestors. We are the ancestors of our descendants. © GEOFFREY SILVER

Join us at Main Stage Meadow for an honoring of the tree of life, of DNA, of the spiraling continuum of all planetary species. The Ceremony’s Grounding begins at 11:00 in the Meadow and the Ceremony itself begins at 11:30 on stage. If you so desire, arrive dressed in a single color. Any color, but ALL in that one color. Arrive ready to participate as together we create this moment of beginning. Arrive ready to step into this Eternal Now, aligning our current choices with creating a healthy and thriving world for the future ones, our descendants. May they remember us, their ancestors, with fondness and gratitude. Every choice we make has ripples.

Alter Able Access and Advocacy (4A) promotes equal access for all participants at OCF. 4A provides some equipment loans, Braille entertainment schedules, sign language interpreters and other assistance as well as advocacy, education and advice. 4A is located in the Dragon’s Head at the entrance and also in Community Village. NEW: From 2-5 daily, one interpreter will be available on a first-comefirst-serve basis to facilitate interactions between people with hearing impairments and booth vendors. Diaper Service Located on Wally’s Way, BRING Recycling will provide cloth diaper service for our newest generation. Complimentary plastic storage bags and diaper pins are provided as needed. Using this service is a great way to help move the Fair towards zero waste while protecting the health and safety of the Sanitation and Recycling Crews. Hours: Daily 11:00 to 7:00. Cost: $10 per dozen plus a $25 refundable deposit.

Shook Twins

Recycle, Please The Recycling Crew, working with the Fair food vendors, are doing everything we can to eliminate plastic from the Fair. This year most of the food service ware that you will receive throughout the Fair, including beverage cups, are compostable! Please dispose of all compostable service ware in the green compost receptacles, not the red landfill receptacles. You will find collection kiosks throughout the Fair, often run by costumed Recyclers who will happily answer your questions. If you’re not sure what goes where, ask a Recycler! We on the Recycling Crew are dedicated to minimizing the impact that our event has on our land and the planet. To learn more about what we do, please visit the educational recycling kiosk in Energy Park and our interactive display and presentation at the StewardShip. Our success depends on you – thank you for recycling responsibly.

Health First!

Once again White Bird’s Rock Med crew provides its unique brand of medical and crisis intervention services at OCF. White Bird is the emergency response at the Fair and dispatches trained Medical & Mental Health professionals to incidents anywhere on site as needed. Services are free & confidential. Don’t call 911, call White Bird! We can be contacted by any staff person carrying a radio or via our internal telephone system located at most major Fair Installations like Stages, Gates and Info Booths. White Bird is centrally located next to the Main Stage with an outpost near the entrance at Odyssey Station and our newest outpost, Little Wing, located in the New Area, Xavanadu, to support our growing footprint and family! Basic First Aid supplies are also available at all INFO Booths. AED’s are distributed throughout the site (see the Map).

Paying it Forward © JEREMY RUNNING

The Fair has been rooted in philanthropy since it began as a fundraiser for a children’s program. Our philanthropy is focused on building community and helping people thrive. We have three grantmaking programs that together have donated more than one million dollars: The Bill Wooten Endowment Fund, the Jill Heiman Vision Fund and Board of Directors Donations. To learn more, wander over to Wally’s Way to visit the Galleria Philanthropia booth or visit oregoncountryfair.org. The Jill Heiman Vision Fund exemplifies the Fair’s principles of grassroots community action. The fund honors the attorney who helped the Fair become a nonprofit agency and purchase the site. Cash, food vouchers and check donations are matched two-to-one by the Fair, up to $20,000. To donate, look for wooden donation boxes, which can be found at all Info Booths. Donations are tax-deductible; please include your address for a mailed receipt. Since 1996, the Vision Fund has donated more than $386,000. The 2016 recipients are: Assistance League, Lane Senior Support Coalition, Laurel Hill Center, MidLane Cares, Pearl Buck Center, and Planned Parenthood of Southwest Oregon. Together we are making a difference in our community. Thank you! This year, the Fair’s Bill Wooten Endowment Fund awarded a total of $14,000 to support nonprofit organizations serving youth in the Fern Ridge area. The grants tangibly represent our deep appreciation of our home community. Recipients were: Campfire/ Camp Wilani Alpine Tower, Crow High School/Glass Arts Program, Culture Jam/Camp Scholarships for Veneta Students, Elmira Elementary School/Drawing Project, Lane Arts Council/Summer Arts Camp in Veneta, Rural Arts Center/ Japanese Folk Film Camp and Veneta Elementary School/Mural Project.

The Artist’s Rendering This year’s Oregon Country Fair poster design by Ila Rose developed out of a desire to pay homage to the land and the creatures that live on it year round. We are fortunate to get to use this space for our festivities each year. We owe a debt of gratitude to those involved in studying and maintaining the land year round as well as to the spirits of the land that permit and sometimes seemingly entertain the celebration. Read the artist’s design notes at oregoncountryfairposter.com. Ila Rose (ilarose.com) is an artist working in the Pacific Northwest. She is part of a group of painters who refer to themselves at Accumulative Realists, a movement that draws from Surrealism, Meta-realism, Visionary art and accumulated symbology throughout space and time as a means to retell old mythologies and concepts as current composite narratives, creating new stories about the magic and transformative reality in which we exist. Ila Rose grew up in Eugene, Oregon. Rose has a twin brother and an older sister. Her sister, Rena, who has Cerebral Palsy, has been a recurring source of inspiration for Ila. Her first-hand experience observing and caring for someone who’s had to negotiate the struggles of living in a non-functioning body with a fully functioning mind has informed much of what she does as an artist and the choices she has made as a human. “There’s always been this desire to understand human suffering,” Rose explains. In her art you might see conversations about deformity, decay, death, inequality, emotion, feminism, environmentalism and self reflection. Her work tends to be very colorful yet dark, complex, detailed, luscious and surreal. She occasionally refers to her work as dreamscapes, elaborating that the paintings come to her as a dream would in sleep or that they feel like a sort of subconscious vomit. Ila has been a barista, a waitress, a nanny, a caregiver, a teacher and a professional musician and now works full-time as an artist. Want an opportunity to design the poster for our 48th anniversary and be part of this amazing event? Share some samples of your work or a link to your portfolio before September 15, 2016. For more details, visit oregoncountryfairposter.com.

The Empathy Tent Oregon Country Fair has welcomed an additional conflict resolution resource to the Fair! We are CeDaR: an Oregon Country Fair conflict resolution resource. At this year’s Fair, CeDaR will be hosting the Empathy Tent at our booth in the Dragon Plaza. You might have seen the Empathy Tent at Eugene’s Saturday Market. If you want an open ear “to lay down your burdens,” the Empathy Tent is the place to be. So, if you’re swinging by the Dragon Plaza, look for the Empathy Tent by the Dragon’s Tail and you can share your tales with us!

Make a visit to the Ritz Sauna and Showers part of your Oregon Country Fair experience! The Ritz, booth #W34, is located on Sesame Street and offers open air and private showers, two traditional saunas, live music, drying fires and deluxe tub rooms in an art-filled elegant spa environment that rejuvenates the mind and body. Towel rentals are available. Stop by to see “Working Together”, the partially-raised, fully “dressed” (painted and accessorized) story pole displayed next to The Ritz. Closed for deep cleaning 3:00-4:00. Women’s Hour, Friday 4:00–5:30. Alter-able accessible.

Chela Mela

Come play in the meadow!

Puppets! Panto! Yoga! Juggling! Kids’ Crafts! Chela Mela Meadow has fun spots all around. Whether you gather for music and laughter under the Monkey Palace or sit down for a conversation in the Cuckoo’s nest, you can find a place to fit your mood. Want a parade? Check out Peachi’s Lair. Join in before 1:00 on Friday and Saturday, or 2:00 on Sunday. You can get painted and ready to parade through the path with Peachi the Dragon and her drummers. Kid’s interested in getting creative? Five Fingers of Fun has some crafty projects for them. Something more kinetic? Drop in on the Yes You Canopy to juggle with the best of them. Something more quiet? The Dharma Garden offers a peaceful retreat, under a giant tree by the side of the river. Join in the yoga classes at 12:00, 2:00 and 4:00.

Or just hang out under the big Monkey Palace tent, right in the middle of things—where we are presenting musicians, jugglers and characters we think you will love as we do. Listen. Laugh. Dance. Join us.

Peach Keepsakes

Muchas Gracias... As a 501(c)3 non-profit organization, the OCF relies heavily on the abundance of donated time, talent and resources of wonderful volunteers. We would love to be able to thank everyone individually, but given the limits on our space and your time, here are a few individuals and businesses whose contributions over the past year have extended the Fair’s capacity to put on an event of the highest quality and develop our year-round programs. Please join us in thanking and supporting them whenever possible: Andrea Nickel for social media assistance, the gang at TicketsWest; the folks at Travel Lane County; Dana Dedrick and the amazing staff at the Long Tom Watershed Council; the Kesey family and The McDonald Theatre; everyone at LTD; Pat Cross from Pacific Benefits; Kim and Jeff from JD Fulwiler Insurance; Carrie Fortier from Jones and Roth, CPA; Pat Walsh; Dana’s Cheesecake Bakery; Tim and Catherine from Our Daily Bread; Sue Howe; Tom Heneghan and his fire trucks; Dillon and Inbound Northwest; the generous folks at Groundwork Organics, Sweetleaf Farms & Deck family Farms; Jason Perry and the Honey Buckets crew; Oregon Web Press; Bob Fennessey of the WOW Hall; all the incredibly helpful staff from Key Bank in Veneta and downtown Eugene; the staff at Banner Bank in Veneta; the fine folks from Silke Communications; Cindy Severson from Jerry’s; Jim Biggs from Quantum Telephone; Gary Nelson from Century Link; Dave D’Vanzo and the staff at Lane Electric; and our dear friend Thom Lanfear. Special thanks to Russell Poppe our attorney; thank you for your invaluable advice, professional services and creative work on behalf of the Fair. Members of the Veneta community have worked with us since 1996 to make the event run more smoothly. This year thanks go to Mindy Sandford, Kyle Schauer and Ric Ingham from the City of Veneta; Veneta Mayor Sandra Larsen and all the Veneta City Councilors; Lane County Commissioner Jay Bozeviech; Sgt. Billy Halverson of the Lane County Sheriff’s Office; Fire Chief Terry Ney and the staff from Lane Fire Authority; Lane County Land Management; the Fern Ridge Chamber of Commerce; and last but never least, all of the volunteers who donate huge amounts of time and expertise to the Fair and who deserve recognition for their extraordinary generosity and commitment. From Culture Jam, to Fair Philanthropy, to our ongoing efforts to steward the Fair’s resources and promote the Fair’s vision and values in all we do, we are blessed by your generosity and creativity. We couldn’t do any of it without each and every one of you! Thank you so, so much.

Please watch for these and keep an eye out for non-approved peaches.
