Is My Child Getting Enough Sleep?
S
BY PILAR BRADSHAW, M.D., F.A.A.P. EUGENE PEDIATRIC ASSOCIATES
LEEP IS FUNDAMENTAL TO a child’s health; however, getting kids back on their school sleep schedule after a carefree summer can be a tough task for parents. Research shows that getting adequate sleep is essential for a child’s mental and physical health. It improves focus, behavior, learning and memory. When a child doesn’t get enough quality sleep, they are at increased risk for anxiety and depression, high blood pressure, obesity, diabetes and problems with their immune system.
HOW MUCH SLEEP DOES MY CHILD NEED? The amount of sleep children need varies with age. The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends: • Infants (under 1 year): 12-16 hours, including naps • Toddlers (1-2 years): 11-14 hours, including naps • Young children (3-5 years): 10-13 hours, including naps
• Encourage lights out at the same time every night and set a standard morning wake-up time. For young kids who cannot yet tell time, specialized devices are available that serve as a night light and glow green when it’s OK for a child to get out of bed. • Develop a consistent and soothing bedtime routine to help calm your child’s mind. This can include taking a warm bath or shower, listening to music or reading. Consider setting a timer if your child has a hard time putting their book down. • Turn off screens two hours before sleep and keep all screens out of the bedroom. • Avoid caffeine at least 6 hours before lights out. Do not give children or teens over-the-counter sleep aids, which can be harmful. If you’ve tried the tips above and your child continues to struggle with falling asleep, staying asleep or suffers from excessive daytime sleepiness, talk with your pediatrician. ✦
• School-age children (6-12 years): 9-12 hours • Teens: 8-10 hours
HELPING A TROUBLED SLEEPER Some children have a harder time falling asleep or staying asleep. A 2018 study by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention found that more than 70% of high schoolers struggle to get enough shuteye. It’s important to note that during adolescence, the body’s circadian rhythm (an internal biological clock) is reset, telling a teen to fall asleep later at night and wake up later in the morning. If your child is struggling to achieve the recommended amount of sleep:

wanted more efficient lighting. Undoubtedly, homeowners have come to understand that energy-efficient upgrades translate into lower energy costs. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the average family spends approximately $2,200 annually on energy bills. Thirty percent of that cost can be removed just like that through energy-efficient home modifications. That being said, the increase

HAT DEPENDS ON YOUR definition of “significant!” According to a study published in the Journal of Urban Economics, with every 10 per cent increase in energy efficiency, a home’s market value increases by approximately 2.2 per cent. In another set of studies, the government-backed energy efficiency experts at Energy Star found that their certified homes in Maryland sold between 2012 to 2015 had a two to five per cent sales price increase, simply because they were deemed energy efficient. This pattern has been observed across the U.S. A six percent increase was seen in the final price tags of Energy Star certified homes in Austin-Round Rock, Texas (sold 2009 to 2016), and an eight percent increase was found in select housing markets across Oregon, Idaho and Washington (2015). Why is this happening? To put it simply, the average home buyer has become savvier in the world of sustainability. In a report by the National Association of Realtors (NAR), it was found that 51 percent of agents interacted with clients that were very interested, or at least somewhat interested, in

DEAR EARTHTALK
10,000 participants revealed that a significant paradigm shift in purchasing habits was occurring. Eighty-five percent of respondents reported that they had changed their spending habits over the past five years to accommodate a greener lifestyle. In addition, one-third of the population is willing to spend more for sustainable products or services—as much as 25 percent! If you’re feeling the same inclination, there are many ways
to upgrade your home’s energy efficiency. Insulating walls is usually where people begin, but sealing air leaks (even the small ones!) with caulking, spray foam and weather stripping can save anywhere from five to 30 percent on energy. Ducts specifically are known to have leaks that can cause losses of as much as 60 percent of the heated air traveling through them. Energy efficient light fixtures, windows, doors, skylights, appliances and hot-water heaters are all available for purchase these days, and when used in congruence with a programmable thermostats and smart-device timers, you can save a surprising amount of money in energy savings by the end of the year. ✦ CONTACTS: Simon-Kutcher study, www.simon-kucher.com/ en-us/about/media-center/ recent-study-reveals-more-third-global-consumers-are-willing-pay-more-sustainability-demand-grows-environmentally-friendly-alternatives; NAR Report, www.nar.realtor/sites/default/files/ documents/2022-realtors-and-sustainability-report-04-26-2022_0.pdf. POSITIVE
PEER PRESSURE How Friends Can Boost Happiness BY SANDI SCHWARTZ
8
O R E G O N F A M I LY . C O M
SEPTEMBER 2022
We
often hear about the many negative aspects of peer pressure and worry that our children’s friends could push them down a path of troubling behavior like bullying or drug use. Fortunately, there is a flip side to peer pressure if harnessed in the right way, as friends can play a major role in building our children’s happiness. Positive peer pressure occurs when friends try to influence others to do something positive, proactive, or productive. This encouragement improves the behavior and attitude of the individual, leading to positive change and growth.
SEPTEMBER 2022
O R E G O N F A M I LY . C O M
BENEFITS OF POSITIVE PEER PRESSURE Positive peer pressure can influence both thoughts and actions. When children are inspired to think more positively about themselves, their entire life improves. They can overcome negative self-talk and low self-esteem, allowing them to live happier, more productive lives. Our kids’ friends can be a great support to them as they face challenges, try out new things, and explore new ideas. These friends can provide the kind of relationship and support that only a peer can give them. They accept them for who they are, which can help our kids feel more confident and comfortable in their own skin. These friends can also serve as a positive role model to push our child to gain new experiences, and ultimately be a better person. Tackling new tasks can be hard for kids since it takes courage and confidence. For some, it is easier if they have a buddy who serves as a mentor to help them along the way. Having this type of peer support can also help kids overcome their fears, whether it is trying out for a sports team or giving a presentation in front of the class. We cannot always be there to support our children, so it is wonderful when they have a group of friends who can fill that role throughout their day. A friend who provides positive peer pressure also helps direct our kids on a path that leads to better choices. For example, if a child is bullied at school, he may want to retaliate and start a fight. A friend with positive peer characteristics would encourage the boy to take a few deep breaths, walk away, and tell a trusted adult about the incident. This is the type of friend parents dream of, because the situation could easily go in another direction where a peer pushes our child to fight and then he ultimately ends up being suspended from school, or even worse, seriously injured. Our kids will surely face difficult situations, so having friends who provide moral support and encouragement can truly make a positive impact on their lives.

EXAMPLES OF POSITIVE PEER PRESSURE Friends who make healthy choices for themselves may encourage our kids to do the same. Whether it is studying for a test, joining a club after school, or choosing not to smoke or drink, certain friends can provide this much needed positive peer pressure. Here are some additional examples of how positive friends can be a good influence on our kids. FITNESS HABITS. Staying active is important to our children’s physical health and emotional well-being. When kids sit around all day inactive, they can struggle in a variety of ways from health issues like elevated sugar levels to depression. A friend who prioritizes fitness can be a positive influence on our kids, inviting them to go for a bike ride, take a fitness class together, or play a game of ball. Friends who encourage others to join or try out for a team sport can be valuable. Not only do team sports help our kids stay fit, but they also help build camaraderie and a healthy social outlet. COMMUNITY SERVICE. When we serve others in the community, it can improve our own happiness. Many schools now encourage or require students to commit to a certain number of community service hours, which has spurred many creative kindness projects. Some kids have started their own charities and engaged friends and family in helping others. This type of friend can be a huge influence on our kids to get more involved in volunteering. If they see others taking part in a volunteer project, it may inspire them to join in and give back, too.
ENDING GOSSIP. Gossip can get out of hand, especially as kids get older in middle school and high school. Spreading hurtful information about others can make their lives miserable and cause a great deal of pain. It is extremely easy for our kids to spread gossip without stopping to think about the consequences for the person being bad-mouthed. If our kids spend time with friends who focus on more important and interesting topics other than gossip, that is a huge win for everyone. That type of friend is the perfect example of someone exemplifying positive peer pressure.
WHY POSITIVE FRIENDS ARE GOOD FOR OUR CHILDREN’S WELL-BEING Scientific research from the world of positive psychology indicates that one of the most critical components of happiness is the relationships we have with others. Happiness experts Ed Diener and Martin Seligman compared the happiest to the least happy people. Their research found that the happiest individuals were highly social and had the strongest relationships. Actually, good social relationships were necessary for people to feel happy. Additionally, research led by Robert Waldinger at Harvard University that followed the lives of people for more than 75 years concluded that relationships are the key to a happier life. The happiest and healthiest participants in the study maintained close, intimate relationships. According to Waldinger, the people who tend to be more isolated than they want to be from others are less happy, their health declines earlier, and they live shorter lives than people who are connected to others. It is not about how many friends we have, but the quality and stability of those relationships throughout our lives that really matters. On the other hand, depression is one of the most common mental health issues in the United States. According to the Anxiety and Depression Association of America, two out of 100 young children and eight out of 100 teens may have serious depression, causing them to feel discouraged, sad, hopeless, unmotivated, or disinterested in

life. One of the best ways for our children to overcome feeling blue is to spend time with their friends. Because of positive peer pressure, a caring, upbeat friend can help improve their mood. In a recent study, scientists found that happy friends can help teenagers beat depression. Feedback from 2,000 American high school students was analyzed to investigate whether the moods of students influenced one another and if this could impact levels of depression among teens. They found that depression does not spread among peers, but a healthy mood (not feeling depressed) actually does. By surrounding themselves with friends—especially happy ones— teens can significantly reduce their risk of developing depression and improve their ability to recover from it. In addition, positive friendships were much more effective than using antidepressants.
WHAT THIS MEANS FOR PARENTS Children look to imitate their peers from an early age. Studies show that happiness is contagious, so we can hope that our children surround themselves with cheerful friends. A Harvard Medical School study found that one person’s happiness spreads through their social group even up to three degrees of separation, and that this effect can last as long as a year. They actually determined that having a happy friend can improve our likelihood of being happy by 15%. It is critical that we pay attention to the type of friends our children are attracted to. If there are any red flags, we can redirect them to more positive choices—friends they can look up to and who inspire them to become the best person they can be. We can also instill the importance
of building positive relationships by doing the same in our own lives. Our children are watching how we interact with our spouse, friends, neighbors, and colleagues and will mimic our behavior. If they see us arguing all the time with others, this could impact how they interact with their own friends. Finally, we can build a positive community for our children from a young age by participating in group activities such as playdates, team sports, community service projects, neighborhood gatherings, and other relationship-building events. ✦

A Dad’s Eye View
Instrument of Torture (OR THE MAGIC FLUTE) BY RICK EPSTEIN
T
HE INSTRUMENTALMUSIC TEACHER CAST her net into the fourth grade and pulled me into her boat, wriggling weakly. My dad asked, “Well, which instrument would you like to play?” “YOU know,” I said. I was already on record as wanting guitar lessons, more as part of my overall plan to become a cowboy than from a burning desire to make beautiful music. “You can’t choose the guitar,” he said, “because it has to be an orchestra or band instrument.” “Saxophones are cool,” I said. “They’re too big and heavy,” he said. “I lugged one of them around for half my childhood. Pick again.” I was out of ideas. It seemed to me that the world’s musical needs were already being met by thousands of musicians who played better than I ever would. My poor efforts would be unnecessary. As for self-expression, I had plenty of avenues for it, ranging from writing stories and drawing pictures to playing with matches and tormenting my little brother. So I had no counterproposal to make when Dad said, “Go next door and see if Mrs. Williams will lend you Patty’s old flute.”
A more spirited boy might have said, “But Dad, that’s a GIRL’S instrument. You might as well send me to school in a dress.” But I went along with it because all the instruments that boys usually played, like trumpets and drums, were loud, and if you didn’t know what you were doing, instant shame would be yours. My big brother played the clarinet, a five-piece contraption that required too much assembly and a lot of fretful attention to reeds that had to be pre-moistened and were always wearing out. I didn’t think a musical instrument should be making so many demands on its owner. A flute would be small to carry and quiet to play – a minimal instrument for a kid wanting to minimize the instrumental experience. My dad had a special regard for music, possibly because Uncle Joe, the big brother he idolized, had been a professional trumpet player. Dad made me practice for 20 minutes every day. But mine was a magic flute; it slowed
down time to where those 20 minutes took up most of my spare time. After two years, I applied for permission to give Patty Williams back her flute. Dad let me quit, but discerning a pattern of behavior, he added The Flute to a growing list of things I had quit (such as Cub Scouts and Glee Club) and he would throw it all up to me whenever he felt I needed to hear it. Last year, my daughter Marie, then 9, signed up for clarinet lessons in school. I rented an instrument for her, and seeing a
second chance for myself, I bought a used clarinet for my own honkings and squeakings. Where before I’d been put off by the clarinet, now all the fussing it required seemed to be part of a reassuring ritual. More importantly, my involvement with the clarinet would be part of a stellar bit of parenting: Marie would be my teacher, thus racking up all kinds of selfesteem, and we would play duets, communing in philharmonic bliss. It would be a great way of interacting with a child who is too old for bedtime stories. It worked well for a couple of months, except for the duets. Marie saw them as emotionally freighted duels, and if her horn squeaked, she’d retire in tears. That took some of the joy out of our lessons, and practicing, never a favorite activity, slipped to the bottom of my list of things to do. It’s been months since I picked up my clarinet. Now my wife tells me that Marie is frustrated with the clarinet. She doesn’t play it very well, which makes her angry and sad, but does not move her to practice. She’d like to quit, but she doesn’t want to disappoint her father. I’m sorry to know that making music does not lift her spirit or soothe her soul. But I’m going to let the poor kid off the hook; with my musical history, I deserve to be disappointed. ✦ Rick can be reached at rickepstein@yahoo.com.

SCHOOL RESOURCE PROGRAMS HELP LEVEL-UP
E
NVIRONMENTAL SUSTAINABILITY IS ABOUT much more than just “reduce, reuse, and recycle.” It’s rooted in concepts such as poverty reduction, health outcomes, gender and race equity, and decent working conditions. As kids return to school this fall, there is another quality-of-life sustainability issue to consider: education. Undoubtedly, getting a leg up in the classroom can change lives. Consider this: a quality education can lead to a good job with benefits (decent working conditions), a healthy home environment free from pollution (better health outcomes), and a heightened ability to fight injustice when needed (gender and race equity). Unfortunately for community members from disenfranchised communities—such as communities of color, the disabled, or the LGBTQ+ community—classroom success often comes with challenges. One common roadblock is access to school supplies and related resources. Fortunately, local programs are available to help. A sampling of area programs includes the following: 4J Eugene School District: Resources and Opportunities for Families in Need (4j. lane.edu/nutrition/freelunchbenefits). This content includes information on everything from reduced fees for sports to free school meals to college financial aid. Springfield Public Schools: Community Resources and Supports (springfield.k12. or.us/domain/139). This resource includes district and community information on various topics, including school clothing programs, transportation options, and hygiene supplies. Lane Kids (lanekids.org). LaneKids supports parents and families “from all racial and ethnic identities, sexual orientations, gender identities, countries of origin, belief systems, ages and abilities” with general information, activities, and resources. Connected Lane County (connectedlane. org). Connected Lane County is “a missiondriven organization striving to improve outcomes for underserved youth in Lane County.” The organization “connects youth with education and employment pathways to transform their future potential.”

Protecting Your Teen’s Mental Health ADVICE FROM A PSYCHOLOGIST WHO UNDERSTANDS BY REBECCA HASTINGS
W
ITH THREE TEENAGERS, THERE always seems to be something I’m worried about. Are they happy? Did they eat any vegetables? Do they even know how to make their bed? I worry about it all. As parents, we think about everything from the small things to the big things when it comes to our kids. Among the biggest concerns is their mental health. It can be hard to know if we are doing enough, focusing on what really matters, and what to do if we’re concerned. Dr. Justin Puder is a licensed psychologist dedicated to shining a light on mental health and ending the stigma associated with it. With over half a million followers on TikTok, Puder, often called Dr. J, is using his expertise and the power of social media to help us and our teens live healthy lives. A recent study shows as many as 37% of teens reported struggles with mental health during the pandemic. Pair these elevated anxiety levels with the majority of teens concerned that a shooting might occur at their school, and teens need more help now than ever before. To equip parents with practical and affordable wellness tools to support their teens, I had the opportunity to ask Dr. Puder some questions that were on my mind as a mom of teens. Here’s what he had to say.
18
What should parents be looking for when it comes to teen mental health? Dr. Puder: Parents should be aware of any changes that last for days that are atypical for their teen. Examples include changes in eating, sleeping, socialization, energy, and mood shifts. Anything that’s out of the norm may be a sign that your teen is experiencing a mental health issue. Though teens will often desire privacy and independence as they approach young adulthood, if you notice that your teen is isolating from everyone (including friends) this is often a sign of distress. How do you know the difference between typical anxiety or stress and something more serious? Dr. Puder: We all experience stress and anxiety increases throughout life, however, when those increases impair our daily activities it becomes problematic. For teens this is typically seen with trouble completing schoolwork, taking exams, socializing, concentrating, and can lead to an avoidance of going to school or partaking in their typical schedule. It’s typically normal for teens to struggle in one class or have trouble with certain assignments, but it is a more serious issue a teen is struggling across classes and in other settings (home, work, sports team, etc).

SEPTEMBER 2022
What are the best ways for parents to connect with their teens, especially when they are concerned? Dr. Puder: In times of concern for your teen, it’s best to foster a connection that’s curious and open. You want to communicate with your teen in a way that invites them to share as authentically as possible. This involves allowing them to fully speak and express themselves. It’s okay to name what you’re observing, but be sure to finish with an open-ended question like, “I’ve noticed you’re spending more time alone in your room, how are things going between you and your friends?” It’s not a good idea to lead with judging your teen or being critical of the behavior you’re observing as it’ll likely shut down the conversation and may prevent them from sharing with you in the future. How can parents foster an environment that helps their teen’s mental health?
Creating a trusting and open relationship with your teen is the single best thing you can do for their mental health.
Dr. Puder: Creating a trusting and open relationship with your teen is the single best thing you can do for their mental health. It’s not about being their therapist, but rather about your teen knowing they can come to you and tell you they need help when something is wrong. They don’t have to share all the details of their lives (this is very unlikely), but they may share enough for you to recognize they need to be connected with a mental health professional. Modeling that it’s OKAY and HEALTHY to speak with a mental health professional can also be a great way to reduce stigma and show we can grow through anything if we face it as opposed to avoiding it. What are some strategies families can implement to help communication and wellbeing?
Dr. Puder: As parents, we always want to lead our communication from a place of curiosity and nonjudgment! It’s also important to fully listen to our teens before offering any feedback, advice, or opinions. Even when you disagree with your teen or the decisions they’re making, it’s essential to communicate with them in a way that makes them feel heard and seen. It’s also helpful to schedule times to actively connect with your teen each week. Whether it’s setting the mood for a self-care activity together with a wellness candle, sitting down for a homemade dinner, or just tagging along in an activity they love, routinely having time to connect is important. Where can parents go for help? Dr. Puder: I strongly encourage parents to model good mental health and talk with a professional as needed! Modeling good stress reduction practices can also include going for walks, having good social relationships, or soaking in a relaxing aromatherapy Epsom Salt bath. Teens notice their parent’s behaviors, so setting a good example benefits the whole family. Parents can also find support through the Youth Mental Health Project under The Parent Support Network, which has both in-person and virtual support. ✦

Chickenhare is their breakout film and targets a younger audience with its fast-paced action, quirky animal characters, and the Indiana Jones adventure story. The animation quality rivals Pixar and the characters, although slightly stereotypical, lend unique voices to the familiar expedition narrative to find a long-lost treasure. Suddenly, his father’s kingdom faces the ultimate danger and Chickenhare, with his friends Abe and Meg, embark on a perilous journey to find the Hamster of Darkness. They survive the valley of scorpions, cross the sinking sandpits, escape the horde of pygmy piglets, and outsmart the Three Deadly Trials to find the powerful scepter that commands a hamster army. But Chickenhare fails to destroy the weapon and the destructive army invades the kingdom. Following an exciting battle
sequence, Chickenhare finally triumphs. And along the way, he learns to appreciate the many advantages of being half chicken and half hare. I look forward to the hinted at sequel, Chickenhare and the Holy Spork, and would wish for a little sharper humor. But again, this film aims at a very young viewer and there are plenty of sight gags & fart jokes. I’d also hope for a better soundtrack, which was almost nonexistent, but understandable given the low budget. Overall, an entertaining movie, and who knows, a brand new franchise. Pass the popcorn! ✦

VERY ONCE IN a while, a film comes along that makes you cheer! Granted, I’m not a basketball fan, but Hustle, starring Adam Sandler is that movie. So much like the original Rocky, that it’ll knock your Air Jordan’s off. But it’s still a fresh, original take on the crusty mentor who’s seen everything and discovers a diamond athlete in the rough. Their training journey and the young player’s raw determination to achieve his dream of playing professional basketball will make you want to jump off the couch and shoot some hoops! But it’s a tough road for Bo Cruz and his scout, Stanley Sugarman, who just wants the world to see this kid play ball. They use chutzpah, arm-twisting, and a social media blitz to give Bo his chance. On the other hand, Stanley’s dream of coaching the 76’ers rides along with Bo as they navigate the politics of high-stakes basketball. It’s fast, it’s cut-throat, and they take no prisoners, but the sacrifice

is worth it. And here’s where I give fair warning that the film is rated R for language. It’s in the streets and on the court. It’s realistic for the story, but not overdone or offensive. And it’d be a shame to miss a fantastic film you’ll want to see again.

Extracurricular Activities NOW, MO RE I M P ORTANT THAN EVER BY REBECCA HASTINGS
We
ALL KNOW LIFE CHANGED drastically when the pandemic entered the picture. From online schooling to making decisions about how we spend our time, life as we knew it was turned upside down. Now that we are finding our way through these changes, understanding what kids need is essential. Why? The American Psychological Association reports a 24-31% increase in mental health-related emergency room visits in kids and teens in 2020. Kids are struggling and a great way to help is with extracurricular activities. Choosing what is right for each child and family, and resisting the urge to overschedule, extracurricular activities are more important now than ever.
6 WAYS EXTRACURRICULAR HELP KIDS
1
THEY ARE AN OUTLET. Whether a team sport or learning a new form of art, these activities allow the chance for less structured experiences from typical school/ home life. The ability to create or interact also helps kids get their feelings, frustrations, and fears out in a productive, safe way.
2
PROMOTE INTERACTION. Taking a creative class or joining a team helps kids interact in a fun way, and also promoted positive relationships. In a world where time with other people all but came to a halt, kids need to learn how to reconnect again. Common interests and goals provide a safe, lightly structured format for these interactions.
22
3
PROVIDE DIRECTION. It has been two years of unknowns for all of us, including kids. While they’ve been incredibly resilient and proven they can roll with so many changes, re-entry isn’t easy for every child. An enrichment club or a recreational sport can provide some direction and stability in a world that has lacked both. A simple once-a-week activity on the calendar is something kids can look forward to.
4
GIVE AN ESCAPE. While it’s important to talk about our problems, sometimes we need a break from daily struggles. Even as adults we understand the value of a good walk or a cup of coffee with a friend. Extracurricular activities give kids a break from thinking about how different school is now, or how something has changed at home since the pandemic started. A healthy outlet can be a mental escape from things that feel hard.
5
OFFER FUN. We can all agree the last few years could be characterized by many things, but fun hasn’t been at the top of the list. A weekly chess club or a run around the bases with the baseball team goes a long way to reinstating fun in our everyday lives. Kids need to remember, it’s not only okay to smile, laugh, and have fun with friends, but it’s essential!
6
HELP THEM BECOME. Part of life is learning who we are, the things we like, and the activities that make us come alive. Exploring extracurricular activities give kids a broader framework for discovery on the journey to fully learn who they are. ✦

Calendars and Planners
Busy kids, busy parents and families make calendars (yes, plural) crucial to staying on top of everyone’s coming and going. Experts recommend having a day-to-day view and a way to see the big picture. For tweens, learning to keep a planner is a big-time life skill that it feels like we’re always trying to teach and reinforce.
ESSENTIAL CALENDAR
The Essential Calendar is a big-picture-view planner. The vertical calendar shows a season at a time and lets you see how everyone’s schedule dovetails (or doesn’t). I used Essential Calendar’s washi tape and sticky notes to color code my boys’ late summer and fall schedules. Thanks to the minimal style and pretty wood hanging accessories, it’s not a calendar you want to hide. https://www.theessentialcalendar.com/
JAIMEE CAMPANELLA FAMILY CALENDAR
Shifting to a short-term view, the Jaimee Campanella Family Calendar gives you a writable surface with a two-week view. Jaimee is a time management expert who couldn’t find the right solution for her family’s schedule – so she built it! I love the Family Calendar because it’s highly visual. It gives everyone an eye on what’s happening in the family and (fingers crossed) relieves some of the mental weight for mom of managing everyone’s schedule. https://www.jaimeecampanella.com/
MINDY LOCKARD
ORDER OUT OF CHAOS
With a busy teen at home, we’ve found that the Order Out of Chaos calendar is organized well for him to track his classes and his afterschool activities. Most planners don’t fit an older student’s needs or help them to compartmentalize and manage their time. This calendar does. https://www.orderoochaos.com/ SEPTEMBER 2022

When that same teen was planning for the first finals week of high school last year, we called Mindy Lockard. She helped him create a system to prepare for each project and test without having it jammed up at the last minute. Because if there’s anything teen boys are good at, it’s procrastinating. Her leadership work with students from 4th grade through high school helps them get organized and also helps them learn to PLAN. That’s a whole skill. Mindy teaches leadership workshops in Portland and Eugene and just released the Power Planner for all students with built-in organizational tools and social skill + confidence boosting QR videos for teens. I can’t wait to get my 5th grader started building these essential skills. https://www.mindylockard.com/marketplace

Geared Up CASEIT BINDERS
A nice, well-organized binder beats a plastic version that will fray and fall apart over the year. CaseIt Binders come in several styles that combine a 2-inch binder with the ability to carry a laptop, iPad or other tablet, notebooks and more. Quite a few types also come with a built-in shoulder strap so you can ditch the backpack. They’re durable and with a price point that won’t break your budget: https://www.caseit.com/
GOTBAG
If you need a larger backpack for older kids or college students, the GotBag is one of our favorites. Made from recycled plastic, every bag is super durable, and it holds a ton (we took it as a carry-on bag for travels this summer). However, it’s still comfortable and easy to carry. https://us.got-bag.com/
MABEL’S LABELS
At last count, we lost two sweatshirts, a coat, a lunch box and at least one pair of shoes in 4th grade. How one loses their shoes is a mystery! I regret not adding Mabel’s Labels to our back-to-school list sooner. These labels are cute, creative and – even better extremely durable. They’re laundry, dishwasher and microwave safe – and they’re 100% guaranteed. Hint: take a peek at their fundraising program; my son’s school does this, and the school earns a little on every purchase. https://mabelslabels.com/
WANDERWILD
The gear for back-to-school is as varied as the kids who carry it. A new backpack is usually a must, though. Wanderwild backpacks are great for the preschool and elementary school set. Wanderwild has adorable styles like The Wanderer and The Explorer that are the right size for smaller frames, and The Adventurer is perfect for upper elementary grades. My 5th grader was happy to see it wasn’t so big as to be uncomfortable but still fit all his supplies. https://wanderwild.com/
KICKS BY SAMMY
Everything from Kicks by Sammy is fun, a little funky and feels like you’re – just like your kids. With more kids carrying laptops to school, a high-quality laptop sleeve is a must. You can also get pencil cases, backpacks and notebooks to match. https://www.kicksbysammy.com/

WORKY WORK STATION
An unusual but creative gear idea comes from Worky Work Station. The Worky is a genuinely portable workspace for how kids work. It’s a workstation in a box! My kids have desks in their rooms, but sometimes they like to work from the kitchen table or the patio, and I always dread their work “nests” in the middle of the room. But this clever idea ensures all their stuff is ready to go (and easy to put away). https://workylife.com/

What’s For Lunch
ROLL’EATS
Make lunches a little more colorful and avoid one-time-use plastic bags with reusable sandwich and snack bags. Made from durable, washable fabric, Roll’eats come in a range of sizes and styles that are easily cleaned and used again tomorrow. https://rolleatusa.com/
DEAREST GREY
The Dearest Grey silicone bento boxes are perfect for packing lunch with finger foods and small bites. The boxes fit perfectly in lunch boxes and they’re freezer, microwave and dishwasher safe. https://thedearestgrey.co/
AMERICANO PEANUT BUTTER
But nothing beats a great PBJ. Thankfully we found Americano Peanut Butter. My family is peanut-butter-picky, but they all love the Americano PB in all three flavors. The classic flavor is a nearly everyday part of lunches and snacks at our house and the Cinnamon Honey and Choco Blanco are a little sweeter (but not too sweet) for an afternoon treat. https://eatamericano.com/

Feel Good, Look Good STEREOTYPE
Why not put a little swagger in your kid’s step? A back-to-school outfit from StereoType Kids is just the way to do it. StereoType apparel is gender neutral – but not style neutral. I love the attention to detail, and our preschool reviewer was definitely feeling himself with the gold-tipped lapels on the blazer. These togs are beautiful quality and built to last. https://stereotypekids.com/
MAD PAPERIE
Milestones are worth celebrating and that’s easy to do with Mad Paperie’s Back to School Party Flags. You can order them customized for your kiddo’s grade or with a general “first day of school” message. They’re perfect for those requisite first-day photos in a flower bouquet or a gift basket. https://madpaperie.com/
BIRDY BOUTIQUE
Cultures and traditions are also worth celebrating. I love this wall hanging from Birdy Boutique that gives kids a sense of the incredible diversity in our world. Perfect for a kid’s room or a classroom, it’s a beautiful way to recognize and celebrate people. https://birdyboutique.com/

Rescue Spotlight
M
eet the adorably handsome and sweet pup, DEEOHGEE! He is an 8-year-old medium mixed breed with stunning blonde and cream fur. He originally was brought to the shelter by Animal Welfare Officers after he was abandoned. He was in poor physical condition with a filthy, matted coat, twisted overgrown nails, and fearful of being handled. After some time to settle in and a trip to the groomer, he is much more comfortable and has started learning to trust people. Because of his rough life prior to coming to the shelter, he is looking for a patient, calm family that will let allow him space and time to get comfortable to his new setting. Our staff said once he warms up to you, he’s a goofy older boy who loves to run around and play with toys! DeeOhGee prefers to be around mature adults and live as the only pet in the home. His idea home would be with a retired family, with someone who works from home, or with a human that can spend a lot of time with him. He weights between 25-30 lbs., is neutered, microchipped, and up to date on vaccines. DeeOhGee has come a long way and we know once he is home with a loving family he will blossom!

he Cat Rescue & Adoption Network presents RAINBOW, a beautiful, fluffy 1-yr-old female kitty, with a pale tortoiseshell coat. She loves people and will start to purr when you enter the room. She is an affectionate girl who will sit on your lap for pets. She loves watching the birds from a sunny window perch, and she’s an active teenager who enjoys chasing toys around the house. She would do best as an only cat and would love for her humans to be home a lot to shower her with attention. She is spayed, vaccinated, microchipped, and negative for FIV & FeLV.
