OREGON WINE
OREGON WINERIES The boutique wineries in the Corvallis area enjoy the favorable wine-growing conditions in the Willamette Valley—it’s no wonder we produce award-winning vintages. The rich history of winemaking dates back nearly sixty years in the region, a wine tasting destination within Oregon’s world-renowned Willamette Valley AVA. Hear from the winemakers themselves about the region’s favorable grape-growing conditions and climate and how it creates the pinot noirs the area is
known for, as well as chardonnays, pinot gris, rieslings and more. With most of these wineries family owned, the winemakers place value in producing high-quality wines. They’re also committed to sustainable practices that aim to keep the Willamette Valley a fertile winemaking region for decades to come. So, settle in to a rustic, cozy tasting room, take in the views of the Oregon countryside, raise a glass and enjoy exploring Corvallis wine country.

Sometimes it’s nice to cozy up in town rather than drive through the region’s scenery. Valcan Cellars Tasting Room is perfect for this. FARM VISITS
LOCAL FLAVORS Corvallis is a farmer’s paradise— surrounded by land with rich soils and a mild climate. Enjoy the bounty from the Willamette Valley’s rich agriculture scene by way of farm-fresh foods and other goods. Take a tour or plan a farm stay, stop into one of the farmers markets and make a few stops along the Mid-Willamette Valley Food Trail.
Catch these different foods and products in their best season: Peoria Road Farm Market
Mid-Willamette Valley Food Trail Explore working farms in the region at your own pace with the self-guided Mid-Willamette Valley Food Trail highlighting the agricultural treasures found in Linn and Benton Counties. Prime time on the farms is typically between May and October. Stop along farms at one of four routes—A Taster’s Tour from Corvallis to Albany, the Makers and Innovators Tour from Philomath to Albany, the Flora and Fauna Tour from Alsea to Corvallis, and the Family Fun for All from Sweet Home to Philomath. Enjoy an engaging and unique experience at one of the working farms along the trail. Check with individual stops for hours and details and remember to find something you like along the way to bring a taste of your journey back home with you. Pick up a copy of this year’s brochure at the Visit Corvallis visitor center or find it online at midvalleyfoodtrail.com.
Farms and u-pick experiences Just south of Philomath, visit Gathering Together Farm, a certified organic vegetable and fruit farm since 1987. Eat at the restaurant, take a tour and learn about their CSA

and VSA food boxes, which feed hundreds of families. Closer to Corvallis, stop into Davis Family Farms for hanging baskets and farm grown strawberries. In the fall, come for hayrides through the pumpkin fields and other harvest-time activities. In Monroe, Lilliputopia is a tiny eco-farm promoting conservation and sustainability. From April through October find seasonal organic vegetables and handmade gifts–100% local. Ready to harvest some blueberries? Several farms in the area have you covered. Located in Corvallis is Anderson Blues, a non-certified organic farm commited to providing fresh blueberries with no harmful chemicals. Pre-order their berries, or head to the farm, grab a bucket and pick them yourself! Or, head south to Kiger Island, formed by a fork between the Willamette River and the Boonville Channel. Kiger Island Blues offers varieties of northern highbush blueberries. While you pick blueberries, ask the owner for tips on growing your own blueberries at home.

Corvallis Farmers Market
Let the farm come to you at the area’s seasonal markets. The Corvallis Farmers’ Market is open from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesdays and Saturdays from mid-April through November, on First Street between Jackson and Monroe Avenues downtown. Hear live music and shop for local foods from a changing lineup of twenty to thirty vendors on Wednesdays and fifty to seventy vendors each Saturday. Head west to the Philomath Farmers’ Market, run by Bountiful Backyard, a nonprofit helping people become more efficient and friendlier with the earth. They will have a unique CSA (community-supported agricultural system) market. Just east of town at Midway Farms is North Albany Farmers Market. Vendors sell exclusively gluten-free products–even the baked goods! Also east is the Peoria Road Farm Market, a permanent structure that comes alive seasonally, opening in late April, to offer farm-fresh fruits, vegetables and freshly picked flowers. Lumos Wine Company
Farm stays There’s no better place to experience the simple pleasures of life on a working farm than here. Visit Leaping Lamb Farm in Alsea, 24 miles toward the coast from Corvallis along Highway 34, for a chance to try delicious fresh foods and breathe in fresh country air. The farm offers overnight stays in a two-bedroom farm cottage or a four-bedroom farmhouse. Guests are invited to pitch in with farm chores and feed the animals. In the fall, choose and cut down your Christmas tree and bring it home after a stay in one of the Donovan’s Place guest homes, located on a Christmas tree farm on the edge of Corvallis. This new family tradition will be loved by the whole family. There’s also a ceramic pottery studio open year-round. Book the vintage 1930s cabin at Lumos Wine Company west of Philomath If your idea of a farm stay involves complimentary wine tastings. Take in the scenery and sip award-winning wine from organic grapes grown on the property.
Garland Nursery
Gardens and nurseries Visit The Thyme Garden near Alsea for a lunchtime tour in the summer and see how the herbs you use in the kitchen are grown. Walk through the greenhouses and the aromatherapy conservatory before sitting down to a meal of seasonal dishes using some of the nursery’s 700 varieties of herbs and plants. In Philomath, stop by Shonnard’s Nursery for flowers and gardening supplies or visit Greengable Garden, a florist and flower farm that grows daffodils, tulips, irises and sunflowers. North of town, visit Garland Nursery, a fourth-generation family-owned shop with more than six acres of trees, shrubs and flowers—plus a great gift shop! V ISIT CORVAL L IS | 2022-2023

FOOD FOR A DAY
CULINARY CREATIONS
Lunch
In Corvallis, the choices are endless when it comes to tantalizing food that will leave you feeling satisfied and quenched. Over the years the region has become rich with culinary creations, from internationally inspired bakeries and desserts to savory brewpubs and options for a classy night out for a special occasion. Corvallis is much more than a college town when it comes to dining options, and with so many farms and regional producers in the area, restaurants are blessed with fresh ingredients and local fixings. Good food is the heart of a good trip to the Corvallis area, and it’s also a great way to fill up your itinerary for the day. Here’s just one appetizing game plan for a day of great food in Benton County.
Refuel after your morning activities with Eats & Treats Cafe, also in Philomath. This restaurant offers a dedicated gluten-free menu and “just darn good food” according to the eatery’s website. The owners, the McHenry family, first learned in 2007 that all the members of the family were gluten intolerant, inspiring them first to open Big River Grains, a gluten-free grain and flour company, followed by Eats & Treats Cafe in 2012. The eclectic menu offers a range of barbecue plates and meals, breads (yes, breads) and house-made sauces, as well as soups, salads, sandwiches, tacos, nachos and more. It’s got all the options for a meal on the breakfast or lunch side of brunch.
Breakfast
Finish the day with del Alma Restaurant & Bar in downtown Corvallis, where guests will find an elegant, yet inviting, dining room. Enjoy a menu of dishes inspired by Latin America, the Caribbean and Spain, with farm fresh ingredients from around the Northwest. Pick something from the long wine list and settle in for your meal. Try the bacon guacamole with hazelnuts or tequila prawns as an appetizer and main dishes including black bean and sweet potato chimichangas as well as albacore and prawns in crème.
The Dizzy Hen in Philomath, about a ten minute drive down Highway 20 from downtown Corvallis, has food so tasty it’ll make your head spin. Here you’ll find a menu of breakfast, brunch and lunch options, with specific offerings changing by the week. For breakfast, go light with morning buns, scones or Danishes, or, dive in with a ham, carmelized onion and cheddar omelet. This spot also serves mimosas and bloody marys, and has a kids menu. DESSERT FIRST From donuts to chocolates, to Chinese, French and Mexican pastries, it’s hard to wait for dessert in Corvallis. Be sure to budget enough time and appetite on your next visit to try at least a few of these sweet culinary creations. Here are seven of the tastiest treat shops in town.
Benny’s Donuts
Ch

Benny’s Donuts believes in the whole donut experience. Expect hot, fresh and fancy varieties including Oregon marionberry & chocolate drizzle, Willamette strawberry, blue lotus masala chai or the cookie monster. Also look for limited availability seasonal favorites and pack together a box of a dozen choices to take on the go.
During the Great Depression, Rhea Burst decided, “What we could use in this town is a handmade chocolate shop.” Over eighty years later, Burst’s Chocolates resides in the same location on Madison Avenue. It’s a can’t-miss gourmet shop offering truffles, nut caramel clusters and ganaches. Each treat is enrobed in fine Guittard chocolate (that’s the good stuff) and hand-garnished at the downtown shop.

New Morning Bakery Count on New Morning Bakery all day to enjoy artisan pastries, cakes, bars, cookies and more from their display case. Or, start your day sweet by trying the hazelnut pancakes with marionberry syrup—an Oregon-inspired breakfast treat.
Enter if you dare—or if you like fresh-baked-daily treats. Browse the day’s creations for donut varieties such as Oreo, marionberry cream cheese, dirty dave (Oreos and peanut butter), mocha or caramel apple crumble. Arrive early to be sure you get some of the limited supply of donuts.
Pilos Bakery
Le Patissier
Try traditional Chinese pastries at Sweet Heart Dessert. These creations use less sugar than typical American desserts, and include treats like matcha or strawberry crepe cakes, chocolate buns and pork floss pastries. Pair a pastry with Chinese bubble tea and enjoy the cute and bright décor at this stop just north of downtown Corvallis.
A little nook in north Corvallis holds a French bakery with a name that translates to “the confectioner.” Opened in 2005, Le Patissier is still serving up sweet and savory treats more than fifteen years later. Try the layered pastries, apple tarts, turnovers and mouth-watering chocolate croissants.
For freshly baked breads, spices, sweet pan dulce and custom baked cakes, head to Pilos. Try a concha, a sweet Mexican bread roll, or a dense and sweet tres leches cake.

ART IS EVERYWHERE Corvallis Arts Walk Venture into downtown galleries, studios, and arts and crafts stores to see more of the bustling Corvallis art scene. Monthly art walks take place from 4 to 8 p.m. on the third Thursday of each month, when downtown businesses stay open late for art displays, demonstrations and music. Go to corvallisartswalk.com for more information or pick up a walking map from any downtown storefront member.
Corvallis Murals Scavenger Hunt Be sure to keep an eye out for the vibrant art that continues to pop up on buildings around the city. There aren’t just a few, but more than forty murals and counting. The new art is thanks in large part to the Corvallis Mural Project, an effort to promote new outdoor artwork for residents and visitors to enjoy. Check out over half a dozen murals on display at “Art Alley,” a narrow passageway between Second and Third Streets and just south of Madison Avenue. Use a map available from the Visitor Center, 113 SW Third Street, Alley Suite 101, to solve clues from the mural scavenger hunt. Learn more at corvallismurals.com.

Downtown Alley Art Walk Take a stroll on Madison Avenue downtown to experience the Alley Art Walk beginning on 8th Street. You’ll find more than twenty-five sculptures, photographs, enamel-onmetal reproductions of poems and silkscreen prints. The twelve-year Alley Art Project is a creation of the Howland Foundation Fund in The Arts Center Endowment, supported by Jim and Ruth Howland. The project’s result is a series of art installations at the mouths of downtown alleys. Head to visitcorvallis.com to download a map to guide your downtown art journey.

Corvallis Museum
Originally built by the Episcopal Church of the Good Samaritan in 1889, the Carpenter Gothic style Arts Center is a work of art itself, and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. After admiring the building, you’ll not only see some more art—the center is home to exhibitions, some of which have been featured in The New York Times—but you can browse the well-stocked gift shop, ArtShop, where you’ll find the best selection of arts and crafts in town. Take a bit of Corvallis home with you. Go to theartscenter.net for the latest events, workshops and exhibit information.
The new Corvallis Museum, a facility of the Benton County Historical Society, is situated on the former Copeland Lumber property, 411 SW Second Street, in downtown Corvallis. Exhibits in the Corvallis Museum take a playful approach to Benton County’s history. The museum contains four galleries plus a few unexpected places for artifacts from the Horner Collection—the Society’s impressive collection of more than 120,000 artifacts including all the relics of Oregon State University’s Horner Museum, which closed in 1995. Current exhibits include “Benton County,” which takes a geographic approach to history, “A College Town,” which delves into the history of OSU, and “Hats & Chairs,” displaying whimsical combinations of, you guessed it, hats and chairs. Also on display throughout the museum are numerous photographs from the museum’s collections and the famous glowing rocks from the Horner Collection. These inaugural exhibitions will begin to be changed out in mid-2022, so make sure to see them while they’re around. More public programs will be offered in 2022, so sign up for the museum’s email list for updates on new events scheduled. The museum store features local art, books on regional history, and of course, a plethora of moose and beaver souvenirs. When planning your visit, make sure to leave time for shopping!

Whiteside Theatre
Say hello to “Bruce the Moose,” once a fixture from the Horner Museum entrance, Bruce has been restored to welcome guests into the Corvallis Museum. The museum is currently open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday and 12 to 4:30 p.m. Sundays. The Benton County Historical Society also continues to operate its original museum in Philomath, open 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday. Admission is free for members, so inquire at the front desk about how to join. Learn more at bentoncountymuseum.org.
Historic theatres Brothers George and Samuel Whiteside are credited with building six theatres in Corvallis during the heyday of Vaudeville entertainment, including The Majestic Theatre in 1913 and The Whiteside Theatre in 1922. A century later, the Majestic and Whiteside are the only theatres built by the Whiteside brothers still standing, and each plays an important role in the lively entertainment scene in downtown Corvallis.
While originally built as a Vaudeville house 109 years ago, The Majestic Theatre was converted into a motion picture house called Varsity Theatre in the 1930s and was eventually closed in 1977. In 1985, the City of Corvallis purchased the theatre and a building next door and a citizen-led capital campaign raised over $1 million for renovations, with the theatre reopening in 1990 as a lively performing arts center. It was then run as a community nonprofit before becoming part of Corvallis Parks and Recreation in 2015. Today the Majestic hosts more than seventy productions and more than 150 performances annually. It’s also a gathering place for nonprofits, businesses, civic groups and clubs. Check out a full calendar of upcoming performances at majestic.org. Built for cinema, The Whiteside Theatre was also home to live stage productions. The theatre was the second largest movie palace in Oregon in 1922. It survived two fires and a multi-year closure in the early 2000s before The Whiteside Theatre Foundation was formed, bought the theatre and began restoration. Today the Whiteside shows classic movies on Wednesdays and hosts concerts and special events. V ISIT CORVAL L IS | 2022 -2023

McDonald, Dunn, Peavy and Chip Ross Park
If you’re looking to get out in nature, you’ve come to the right place. Take advantage of Benton County’s mild seasons with an outdoor adventure that suits your style, whether it’s hiking to take in the views, biking through rugged forests, sightseeing and exploring the outdoors or diving into water sports like fishing, kayaking and swimming.
McDonald Forest, Dunn Forest and Peavy Arboretum provide a vast network of hiking trails through mature forests about fifteen minutes north of Corvallis. Take Dan’s Trail, which meanders 2.5 miles through the forest to the top of Dimple Hill, where you’ll find beautiful views of Corvallis and the Cascade mountains. The nearby Chip Ross Park also boasts lovely views over Corvallis.
Hikes Enjoy miles of multi-use trails great for hiking in Corvallis and Benton County, with some offering expansive views, scenic strolls through natural areas and parks, meadows of wildflowers and more. Before heading outside, the first stop for prospective hikers should be The Right Trail website at therighttrail.org. You’ll find several hiking options for the mid-Willamette Valley, including options specifically for families or those with dogs, and an interactive map to explore the area. Still not sure which hikes might be right for you? Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

Mountain, town and gravel biking If two wheels sounds better than two legs, most of the same trails are fit for a mountain bike, too. On The Right Trail website, search for trail options by use, and plan your bike outing. If you don’t have a bike or left it at home, there’s no need to worry. Bike rentals are available from Peak Sports downtown, which offers both mountain bikes and cruisers for adults and children. They even have tandem bikes for a playful duo looking to hit the streets together—or a lazy rider looking to get out of pedaling much. Looking to make a big day out of biking? Check out the hundreds of gravel miles in and around Benton County. The unpaved routes and loops for gravel biking are endless. Stop by any bike shop or the Visitor Center to pick up a bike trail map, or go to the Visit Corvallis website or the AllTrails app for more cycling info.

Willamette River Water Trail
With summer temperatures in the 80s or low 90s, cooling off in the water is sometimes the only outdoor activity that sounds right. With both the Willamette River and Marys River winding through town, there is a variety of swimming holes in the Corvallis area. Two good places to jump into Marys River are at the Marys River Natural Area off SW Brooklane Drive and at Pioneer Park, where there’s a sandy beach. Also check out the nearby Avery Park, which is great for children and dogs, and has a rope swing into the river. About 16 miles south of Corvallis is Irish Bend Park, a great place for a picnic, camping and a swimming hole to dip in the Willamette River. For a less nature-y option, try the Osborn Aquatic Center in Corvallis, which boasts four swimming pools both indoors and outdoors and Otter Beach, an outdoor water park with a waterslide, toys and more. Admission is just $3-$6.
Grab your paddle and personal flotation device, and get ready for an adventure. The Willamette River Water Trail is 187 miles of assembled properties that provide access to the river for campers and paddlers. The trail flows through forests, meadows, parks, farms and cities large and small. Take an hour, afternoon or multiple days to explore the river on your preferred craft. Options include canoe, kayak, SUP, raft or drift boat. Several local outfitters and guides offer paddlesport sales, rentals and instructions before you head out. There are about fifty campsites to choose from along the trail. River etiquette is to be courteous, respect private property and leave no trace, including human waste. Leave camp better than you found it to ensure the trail is around for generations to come. Prepare for an excursion by heading to the key resource for aiding in trip planning and sharing river hazard information—willamettewatertrail.org. Here you can find information on the required Waterway Access Permits (WAP), itinerary inspiration and recommended packing lists—including a PFD and proper gear for river safety. The site offers downloadable maps to help identify campsites (first come, first serve), learn knowledge on the river features, find info about shuttling and provide history and information as you paddle the river.

CORVALLIS-TO-THE-SEA TRAIL
CORVALLIS TO THE COAST
PHOTOS COURTESY PEAK SPORTS AND THE C2C TRAIL PARNTERSHIP
Experience the Oregon Coast Range like never before on the Corvallis-to-the-Sea (C2C) Trail. Whether on foot or bike, headed out for a day hike or taking a week off work for a thru-hike, you’ll find what you’re looking for here. The entire route, running from Corvallis to the Pacific Ocean is about sixty-two miles and entirely open to hikers, with some sections, but not yet all areas, open to bikers or horses on a seasonal basis. Experience deep forests, open vistas and a variety of wildlife and forestry. The trail traverses through the Oregon Coast Range, forests and wildflowers, with more than a dozen access points on Forest Service land. Camping is currently available at the mid-point of the trail at the Big Elk Campground and at the Benton County Fairgrounds. Dispersed camping is also allowed on Forest Service lands along the trail. Establishing the trail was a seventeen year undertaking led by the non-profit Corvallis-to-the-Sea (C2C) Trail Partnership. The work involved cooperation and support from private landowners, local governments and the U.S. Forest Service. Much of the path is on old gravel logging roads and other sections were established by dedicated volunteers. Find downloadable trail maps, permit information, current advisories and more at c2ctrail.org.
