MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
When my wife, Jennie and I first arrived in Singapore eight years ago with a very young child and another on the way, we were worried about housing, finding Creme Eggs, and most importantly, schooling. The worry dissipated quickly as we realised how lucky we are to land in Singapore. There are plenty of private schools offering a variety of education curriculum. Some of the world’s highest ranking International Baccalaureate (IB) schools are in Singapore, and six of them are featured among the top 21 secondary schools in Singapore, which itself has the best education system in the world. So that’s no mean feat. We hope that you find this directory a useful guide as you navigate your way through the plethora of choices available. You will see that most of the prestigious schools are your fellow Chamber members, and I’m sure they will be pleased to help with your enquiries. Good luck in your search,
Bicky Bhangu President of the British Chamber of Commerce
CHOOSING AN INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL Choosing a school for your children is one of the most important decisions a parent can make. When faced with a new school system, as expatriates typically are, it is important to research all of the choices, listen to parent feedback and make your comparisons across several key criteria. Whether you intend to remain in Singapore as a family for the medium term or an unspecified period of time, those with intentions to return to their home country would do well to consider schools which mirror the home country education system and curriculum, for easier transitions. The key factors to consider when comparing schools include: > > > > > > > > > > > > > >
Admissions process/waitlists Curriculum Population Exam results and alumni success Language options Facilities Fees School culture Student : teacher ratio Class sizes Holiday and term dates Teaching hours Location and transportation options Healthcare policies
Expect to pay for registration and/or a deposit, term/semester fees and additional costs such as uniforms, transportation, insurance and facilities fees. While international school fees can be high in Singapore, the quality of facilities is exceptional with continued investment in the latest technology, equipment and expansion of school buildings. In this, our first Guide to International Schools, we will highlight some of the most prominent options in Singapore. This is by no means an exhaustive list as there are numerous international schools to choose from. A more comprehensive list with websites for further information can be found on the opposite page. As a next step, we recommend contacting your preferred school(s) to participate in one of the regular Open Days for prospective families.

TESTIMONIALS
What were the most important factors for you in selecting a school? “We wanted a school with ties to Australia and the Australian curriculum but most importantly for us, was a school that offered play based learning within a nurturing environment. Our children are very young and we wanted them to explore and learn in a stimulating environment that promotes and believes in enriching their lives through play. I strongly believe children should be outside playing, painting, getting messy and learning through experiences rather than sitting inside at a desk. In addition, we really wanted a 3 day program so that they weren’t in full time school from such a young age. Many other schools don’t offer this and for us, it was like another indicator that AIS is focused on making sure that each child’s needs can be catered for and that there are opions available to suit everyone. We viewed a number of schools and, as luck would have it, AIS was the last school we visited before we made our decision. During our first visit to the school, I very quickly realised we didn’t need to look any further. From a parents perspective there is something to be said for the ‘feel’ of a place and AIS felt right from the moment we walked through the door. Everyone from the admissions staff through to the Head of Early years was so accommodating and helpful throughout the entire process. I remember sitting on the pre-school sized chairs with the Head of Early years while she was playing with my 3 year old (at the time) and it was just so natural and open. Her focus wasn’t on me or trying to sell the school to me, it was on showing my little girl a learning environment and play space and moving through it at Brooklyn’s pace even if it was only ever just for that one moment in time.”

TESTIMONIALS
Why their kid loves this school “Ella adores school and is sad when she misses a day. The teachers have such passionate and caring personalities and you can tell they love what they do. It is play based and she loves exploring all the different activity stations the teachers set-up around the classroom.” What the parents like about the school “The teachers genuinely care and are so enthusiastic every day. They welcome us in the classroom and communicate everything with us. They make the classroom such an open and exciting place for our child to want to be in. We love that Ella is happy and has a love of learning. She has the opportunity to learn the multi-cultures around her and from the region we live in.” Why the programmes/syllabus are appealing to the child “It is hand-son and play based. The activities are led by what the child wants to do and how they choose to learn given their personalities, in an environment that has been created for them to explore. There are a variety of relevant learning themes throughout the year and she learns so many important lifeskills.” How the school has benefitted the child “She has gained more confidence and independence. She learns so much from taking direction from other adults (teachers) along with interactions with her peers. She has learnt how to interact and communicate with others. The environment is very diverse which enables her to be sensitive to others no matter what their background.” Why the parents feel the school is a top-notch one “The people and the facilities are first class.”

TESTIMONIALS
“When we chose the school, we made the choice in a general abstract way on the school’s values, but mostly from the tour of the infants’ school. The outdoor education program was something so far in our future that it just seemed like a good idea amongst many other good ideas. My eldest child has just returned from Nepal on the Grade 9 Annapurna multi-adventure trip. It was not her first choice, but it was an excellent choice. She has come back feeling physically strong and capable (a gift for anyone, but particularly for a girl). She feels connected to a very different culture and way of living. All the trips have been valuable, but this Grade 9 trip has been very special. Thank you.”
- Parent, Dover Campus “Both of our children attend the East Campus. Cara is in Middle School and started in Grade 5; Tom started in K1 and this is his third year at the school. UWCSEA is welcoming and open; the teachers and classroom assistants have a passion for learning and help children reach their potential. I believe that children get a wellrounded holistic education at UWCSEA. Service, activities, outdoor education and personal, social and emotional wellbeing are woven into the curriculum. What better way to start your academic career than in a place that teaches the love for learning.”
- Liz Jackson, Parent, East Campus “My old school also only had 600 people which is nothing in comparison to the massive community in UWCSEA. But, instead of the size being a bad thing, it creates an amazing community of so many people that we can talk to, learn from and collaborate with.” - Student and boarder, Vitória Andrade Carnier Class of 2016 from Brazil, Dover Campus “I attended UWCSEA and it was the single most important and formative experience of my life. It opened my eyes to the wider world, and provided me with the most rigorous and challenging education I’ve received at any stage of my academic career.”

“We could not have asked for a better start for my daughter in school – other than a bottom lip wobble on the first day, she hasn’t looked back and comes bouncing home every day telling us how she has done “everything” at school. She constantly surprises us with her knowledge – but more than that, we are just delighted by her thoughtfulness and affectionate and joyful exuberance, and the values that are clearly being modelled and demonstrated in the classroom. We are just so grateful for the supportive environment and guidance that she (and we) have at TTS.” - Parent, Infant School “We absolutely LOVE TTS. As a family who have just about completed our first year we can report that the school is a joy to attend and we are delighted that we have had the opportunity to be part of the Tanglin community. The level of learning is astonishing and our children have progressed way beyond our expectations. The school has been incredibly supportive to me personally through our transition into Singapore and I am extremely grateful to all the Tanglin team who have helped us.” - Parent, Junior School “The support and inspiration our son received from his class teachers and tutor is so very much appreciated. His ability in engendering self-belief and stressing the importance of pushing oneself to the utmost was very apparent in his results. Without his outstanding teaching and pastoral care, we are quite certain that our son would not have achieved a full house of A’s.” - Parent, Senior School “We just wanted to say thank you so much for the incredible support you have all given our daughter individually, and collectively, in her application to Oxford. We are of course utterly thrilled to bits with her offer and impossibly proud parents! As you all will know, we had pretty much nothing to do with her application at all – it was all down to you all and the team that encouraged, challenged and helped her along the way and we are very grateful.” - Parent, Senior School

“We chose Dulwich College Singapore for our daughters to have the rigour of a UK education along with a comprehensive program of international sports, art, music, and drama. DCSG does not disappoint; it is a one-stop modern campus catering to the diverse interests of my children, from saxophone and theatre productions, to design technology and football. We don’t need to engage in other activities because it’s all at the College. The teachers at DCSG are outstanding, possessing a level of professionalism and passion that a parent can only dream about – truly the best of the best in the world. ” - Dr Yvonne McNulty Senior Lecturer, School of Human Development and Social Services SIM University, Singapore “We are enjoying our third year with Dulwich Singapore and it’s clear we made the right decision! The list of positives is long - from the highest calibre teachers who care deeply about the kids whilst challenging and encouraging them to reach their full potential, to the academic rigour applied to following the British curriculum. There’s a wonderful diversity of cultures that the children are exposed to as well as the embedded focus on developing the whole child and preparing them well for the future. Don’t forget the world class facilities that our children benefit from on a daily basis!” - Geetha Kuperan Head of Liability Management, Capital Markets “Our three children joined Dulwich College Singapore as their doors opened for students in August 2014. It was a world away from their experience of a small primary school in London but has offered experiences and opportunities that they will never forget. The atmosphere is welcoming and supportive and the curriculum well structured and exciting. The staff are fantastically dedicated and our children feel safe, happy and motivated in an environment where expectations of behaviour are high and students are encouraged to ‘fly to the moon’, to challenge themselves to try new things and do their best.” - Juliet English “With a son in Year 3 and a daughter in Year 1, we couldn’t be happier with our choice of DCSG. This is our third year and we have been blown away with DCSG. The facilities are exceptional, but that is backed up by a wonderful team of teachers who encourage our children to dig deep, and open their hearts and minds as they cover a vast array of subjects. The Mandarin program, particularly in Ducks, is exceptional, and one of my true joys is watching the children perform in the new Performing Arts Center, which is out of this world.” - Kirsty Evans

“Our four children joined Marlborough College Malaysia in 2013 as day pupils. They are extremely happy and very much look forward to going to school. They comment that “the other children are nice and friendly and that they really like their teachers”. They love the wide range of co-curricular activites on offer, with the biggest dilemma being which to do first. They play individual and team sports almost daily and enjoy participating in College choirs, orchestras, ensembles and drama productions. They are also doing well academically, and we feel confident that, at Marlborough, they will reach their full potential.” - Nicola Chessher, Parent “Our experience at MCM has been absolutely first-class. The quality of teaching is excellent. As my 2 children are 2 years apart and both attended international schools previously, I have been able to compare directly how the same curriculum is taught for specific year groups at MCM and at other international schools. Without a doubt, the quality and depth of teaching at MCM is superior on many levels. Sport is part of daily life and children are encouraged to try and participate in a wide range of sports. The 90 acre campus with its impressive playing fields is a sight to behold; however, importantly, the qualities of teamwork and sportsmanship are developed and help instil confidence in children. Drama, Art, Music, Design Technology, and all manner of activities are celebrated, not as “extra-curricular” (as with other schools) but as part of the curriculum. Children are given the opportunity to try a whole range of new things; for example, participating in school plays or musical events, or becoming part of the “Outreach” program where students can work with less fortunate communities. MCM is a true “sister school” and is not part of a franchise or joint-venture operation that is seeking revenue/profits or part of a property development or township (as is the trend in Asia and the Middle East)- this means that every dollar paid by parents into the school is reinvested in hiring the very best teachers and providing the highest standard of facilities and educational resources and equipment.” - Kevin Chan, Parent
